Tony hadn’t built a nest since he was a pup— “That’s Omega work!” Howard had snarled at a young Tony as he threw the boy’s favorite blanket into the fire. But he did his best to push the blankets and pillows on top of his king-size bed into a nest that would hopefully bring Steve some security. 

Still functioning by instinct alone, the Omega rooted, reforming the nest to his taste before rubbing his scent over one of the softest blankets Tony owned. It was weighted, too, and elicited a happy purr from his mate. Tony managed to sneak in a few items of clothing that belonged to his pack, a sweatshirt he’d stolen from Rhodey when they were in college and a handkerchief Happy had begrudgingly given him. 

Hesitantly, Tony sat on the edge of the bed, unsure if he would be welcome in the nest or not. But to his surprise, Steve pulled him into the nest and lay his head on Tony’s heart, his arc reactor humming quietly.

The worst part wasn’t the fever or the confusion in Steve’s eyes. He still called Tony Bucky and occasionally woke up from nightmares screaming or with his hand wrapped around Tony’s neck.

No, it was when Steve tried to present the stuffed animal to him as if it were their pup. Despite only having it a few days, the Bucky Bear was already worn and threadbare. The plushie looked like it had been dragged through hell and back: matted fur, a black-button eye missing, and a small tear on its arm. Steve still refused to let it go, not that Tony had the heart to take it from him. His hands shook as he held it out, wide, hopeful eyes searching Tony’s. His voice, raw and barely more than a whisper, escaped for the first time since Tony brought him home. “Safe?”

Tony blinked back tears. He forced a smile he didn’t feel and reached out to cover Steve’s hand with his own. “Yeah, sweetheart. Safe.”

Steve stared at him for a moment longer, then curled back up, burying his face in the battered plushie. His breathing stayed uneven, restless.

Tony sat with him for hours. The bond was so new and fragile that he couldn’t bear to leave Steve longer than a few minutes. 

He didn’t know what hurt worse—seeing Steve like this, or knowing that somewhere deep inside, Steve thought he was Bucky Barnes, or that this broken, battered toy was their pup… 

All Tony could do was pretend and hold Steve close, hoping his mind would be clearer the next time he woke.

Sometimes, I think authors can overlook context. Because we know our stories so well (they’re often in our heads for years) we forget that our readers are new to our stories.
