He was late.
The only time that you had to spend with him was at sunset. It wasn't often that you could see him, and that had to do with the fact that there was too much work to be taken care of.
You were a jack-of-all-trades when it came to the ship, and if someone needed something, you had to be there to make sure that it happened as soon as possible. You didn’t want to end up on the wrong end a sword from a captain like yours, so, you did what had to be done.
Cleaning, navigating, delegating, cooking, and more. You did what was asked with no questions asked. It made some days harder than others, but you didn’t exactly have a say in the matter! The fleeting moments of freedom that were put into your hands were what made it worth it. Before you met him, you would head over to the cove and watch the sunset with a mouthful of taffy.
Seven wasn’t like anyone you’d met in your travels. He had a crooked smile and freckles that seemed to be a gift from the sun that kissed his cheeks. That dumb hat of his hid his red hair, but you paid no mind to that. It tickled his brow and if it occurred to you to watch him closely, you’d see how it shifted with his glances at you from afar. His drawl was thick, like nothing you’d ever heard from someone in a port town.
These things made him stick out like a sore thumb. He was an easy target for any thieves that wanted to have a go at him. Yet, he never made it easy for any of them to get away with it. He was an out-of-towner, but he wasn’t a moron. He was a swindler like the rest of them, and normally, you would’ve been enough to make you send him packing down the bay! But, you couldn’t bring yourself to let him go so quickly.
It was that devilish smile that beckoned you to think twice about what you saw in others. He taunted you to think harder about the world, and in turn, you wanted it more than anything else. He wanted you to think about what it meant to be do it in the face of your fears. He spoke of starlight, constellations, and the dreams in the universe tangled together by stories made by humans since the dawn of the Earth’s history.
Seven was dangerous in that way. He made you want more than the world had given you. He made you dream of the day when you been able to pay off those debts that had trapped you on that ship in the first place. He was tangled inside his own mess that he would never talk about, but he mentioned how you could make a difference for yourself. He was a dreamer, and you were a realist who knew what had to be done.
There were sacrifices that had to be made in the name of your dreams... even if it took forever to get there.
You could feel it. The sounds of footsteps on the sand tipped you off right away. You could feel the Earth shake underneath you as the footsteps became larger and louder, the telltale sign that someone was going to try and attack you from behind. You reacted as you were trained to, hand moving to your hip to grab the hilt of your sword to brandish it.
Spinning around, you swiped your opponent off their feet and moved to make the first counter-attack. They crashed against the sand with a loud thud as you had them pinned against the grainy surface, blade next to their head enough to warn them how easily you could adjust your aim, and your body hovering over theirs to make sure they couldn’t roll out.
“Hey, hey, hey! Y’all don’t have to go whippin’ that out of the blue like that! I ain’t tryna’ get ‘cha, Andie!”
You blinked, the sunlight shifting behind you against the surface of the water and reflecting against the face of someone you knew all too well. Seven was the one who had tried to sneak up on you, and his eyes were both wide and amazed at how fast you had been able to fend him off when he wasn’t even trying to attack you.
If you didn’t know any better here, you’d have thought that his golden eyes had started to sparkle. The sunlight always seemed to suit him... a world that made you imagine if there was really a place where there was no sign of the oceans that felt like your home like he described.
“You idiot,” you cried in protest, letting go of your weapon so that it could fall to the sand where it wouldn’t make a mess of him. You could’ve hurt him if you let him get the best of you like that! “How many times have I told you that you can’t sneak up on me like that?! Whenever things go south on the ship, that’s always what night guards do! I could’ve taken your head off your shoulders!”
“...Yer’ amazin’,” was his reply.
You blinked in confusion, staring at him as if he had grown two heads out of that neck of his. Seven only seemed to take that as a chance to catch you off guard once again, this time, grabbing at your hand to pull you down with him onto the sand. You let out a shriek when you landed on top of him, barely managing to keep yourself up right as you felt the weight of exhaustion catch up with you so soon.
If you weren’t tired, you would’ve complained more. But, the proximity to Seven wasn’t so bad. You had a complicated dynamic with him but this was his weird way of making you relax. He was always pulling pranks like this whether you’d told him to do it or not. It landed him in hot water time and time again, but you weren’t upset with him.
He made you feel more than just...
“And you’re a nuisance,” you grumbled.
“Ah-ah-ah, but I’m yer’ nuisance. Y’all can’t be too mad at me this time around, Andromeda. Ya’ were standing around without lookin’ to see if there’d a sneak attack,” he said. You could feel his laughter rumble deep inside of his chest. It felt warm. “Y’all did the same thing to me. I think turnabout play is fair, don’t cha’ think?”
Huffing, you decided to just rest on top of him. If he was going to make the fuss in the first place, you would make sure that he couldn’t try again for a while. He would understand. “Alright... alright. You got me back for the last time I dunked you in the water, but we’re even now!”
The sounds of the ocean waves crashed against the shores behind you, if only to remind you that the world existed outside of you and Seven. The cowboy who had too much time on his hands these days. You knew he had work to do but he always too much energy whenever he found you at night. What was he trying to do, anyway?
“I’d never want our little game to end,” he said, quietly. There was more to that than either of you would admit.
“I’ll have to teach you how to use the superior weapon if that’s the case,” you said. “That flimsy little gun isn’t doing anything for you if you can’t draw and load it fast enough. I can take you down in a matter of seconds like that if you don’t know how to disarm me first.”
He laughed again. “I reckon I’d rather you take them down first, Andie. I’d love to watch you in action. If you shine like starlight just like you did now... well, I know why you never lose a fight.”
With another groan, you tugged his hat down so it covered up his face. Ugh! He was so infuriating! He continued to laugh at you but you ignored it, deciding to let him have that moment while you shut your eyes, unafraid to be by his side unlike the way you felt when you clung to the ship’s crow nest in the dead of night with a pit of dread in your stomach.
He was safe.

IMMORTAL VAMPIRE ARC.
Just as a note: if I ever write or reference an immortal arc for Jack, I will be referencing this verse, and it is heavily affiliated with both WWDITS canon and musecraft & shadowcovcn. Jack’s primary ship is with Laszlo & Nadja in this arc, but like them he is also polyamorous and has taken plenty of other lovers during his immortal life.
This verse diverges from POTC canon after the events of On Stranger Tides: Jack encounters Laszlo and Nadja while on their golden age of piracy Caribbean honeymoon. The three quickly hit it off and, after having the prospect of immortality dangled in front of him mere hours after meeting, Jack jumps at the prospect of vampiric transformation. At this point, the Black Pearl is safe ( and stuck ) in a bottle, and will remain that way for the next 250 years.
Temperance isn’t easy for him as a newborn vampire and he struggles for the first six months between his aversion to killing and the hunger that has taken hold of his rational mind, beginning a nomadic lifestyle with Nadja and Laszlo as they travel from port to port. It isn’t long before the age of piracy itself starts to fade: Shipwreck Cove and Tortuga soon fall to the English and Spanish, leaving the number of safe ports available to the trio of vampires dwindling by the year. It is at this moment that Jack must finally shed the legend that he has spent his entire mortal life creating: Captain Jack Sparrow becomes a name committed to legend, a pirate who disappeared at sea, with no records of ever being apprehended or hanged for his crimes. Jack, meanwhile, leaves the Caribbean with Laszlo and Nadja to join the vampire cult led by Baron Afanas.
This verse encompasses the next two hundred and fifty years of Jack’s immortal life, from a failed stint at Baron’s court to his hijinks in pre-revolutionary France, his escape from the guillotine to his adventurer era as the Industrial Revolution takes hold, to languishing on a yacht in the Caribbean during the Great War, before finally settling in London in the mid 20th century. To humans at least, Jack runs a Soho club that becomes an integral part of the emerging rock ‘n’ roll scene of the 1960s and 1970s. To his fellow vampires and other supernatural creatures, Jack becomes part swindler, part expert in magical and occult artefacts. Disliking or indeed making enemies of most other vampires, Jack prefers to exist in both the human and vampire worlds, never quite belonging to either.
Jack is reunited with Nadja when she travels to London with Guillermo to take up a place at the Supreme Vampiric Council, and after she ditches the council to return to Staten Island at the start of season 4, Jack returns there with her.
FULL BIO TO BE ADDED.

Today’s reading from the ancient books of Proverbs and Psalms
for november 21 of 2023 with Proverbs 21 and Psalm 21, accompanied by Psalm 60 for the 60th day of Astronomical Autumn, and Psalm 25 for day 325 of the year (with the consummate book of 150 Psalms in its 3rd revolution this year)
[Proverbs 21]
The king’s heart is like a channel of water directed by the Eternal:
He chooses which way He bends it.
Everyone may think his own way of living is right,
but the Eternal examines our hearts.
To do what is right and to seek justice—
these please Him more than sacrifice.
The lamp of the wicked lights his way;
a proud look, an arrogant heart—all sin.
A well-thought-out plan will work to your advantage,
but hasty actions will cost you dearly.
The fortune made by a swindler
is a fast-burning fog and a recipe for death.
Wicked people will be swept up in their own violence
because they refuse to seek justice.
Dishonest people walk along the crooked path they have made,
but the innocent travel the straight course they have laid.
It is better to dwell outside on the corner of your roof
than to live inside your house with a badgering wife.
Wicked people delight in doing bad things;
their neighbors never see even a hint of compassion.
A naive person wises up when he sees a mocker punished.
A wise person becomes even wiser just by being instructed.
The right-living understands how evildoers operate;
he subverts them and ruins their plans.
If you ignore the groans of the poor,
one day your own cries for help will go unanswered.
A gift given in secret soothes anger,
and a present offered privately calms fierce rage.
When justice is done, those who are in the right celebrate,
but those who make trouble are terrified.
People who wander from the way of wise living
will lie down in the company of corpses.
Those who live to party, who pursue pleasure, will end up penniless;
those who enjoy lots of wine and rich food will never have money.
The wicked become a ransom for those who live right,
and the faithless pay the penalty for their treachery against the upright.
You would be better off living in the middle of the desert
than with an angry and argumentative wife.
The wise have a generous supply of fine food and oil in their homes,
but fools are wasteful, consuming every last drop.
Whoever pursues justice and treats others with kindness
discovers true life marked by integrity and respect.
One wise person can rise against a city of mighty men
and cause the citadel they trust to collapse.
Guard your words, mind what you say,
and you will keep yourself out of trouble.
The name “mocker” applies to one who is proud and pompous
because he is defiantly arrogant.
What slackers crave will surely kill them
because they refuse to work.
All day, every day the greedy want more,
while those who live right give generously.
The offerings of wrongdoers are despicable to God;
it’s even worse when they bring them with evil motives.
The testimony of a false witness is eventually impeached,
but the person who truly listens will have the last word.
The wicked wears a defiant face,
but the right-living plans his path.
No one is wise enough or smart enough,
and no plan is good enough to stand up to the Eternal.
No matter how well you arm for battle,
victory is determined by Him.
The Book of Proverbs, Chapter 21 (The Voice)
[Psalm 21]
For the worship leader. A song of David.
The king is glad because You, O Eternal, are strong.
In light of Your salvation, he is singing Your name.
You have given him all he could wish for.
After hearing his prayer, You withheld nothing.
[pause]
True blessings You lavished upon the king;
a crown of precious gold You placed upon his head.
His prayer was to live fully. You responded with even more—
a never-ending life to enjoy.
With Your help, his fame and glory have grown;
You raise him high and cover him in majesty.
You shower him with blessings that last forever;
he finds joy in knowing Your presence and loving You.
For the king puts his trust in the Eternal,
so he will not be shaken
because of the persistent love of the Most High God.
King, your hand will reach for all your enemies;
your right hand will seize all who hate you.
When you arrive at the battle’s edge,
you will seem to them a furnace.
For the fire of the Eternal’s anger, the heat of His wrath
will burn and consume them.
You will cut off their children,
lop off the branches of their family tree.
The earth will never know them,
nor will they ever be numbered among Adam’s kin.
When they scheme against you,
when they conspire their mischief, such efforts will be in vain.
At the sight of you, they will sound the retreat;
your bows, drawn back, will aim directly at their faces.
Put Your strength, Eternal One, on display for all to see;
we will sing and make music of Your mighty power.
The Book of Psalms, Poem 21 (The Voice)
[Psalm 60]
For the worship leader. A prayer of David after his victory over the Arameans, Joab’s return, and the striking down of 12,000 Edomites in the valley of Salt. A song for instruction to the tune “A Lily Reminds Us.”
God, You have turned away from us;
You have shattered us into a million tiny pieces;
You have boiled with anger.
Now put us back together, and refresh us with Your mercy.
You have made the earth shake; You have cracked it open effortlessly.
Heal the fissures in the earth, for it is unsteady.
You have caused Your people to suffer;
You have provided us with wine that makes us stagger.
You have unfurled a banner for those who revere You,
a signal to gather in safety out of the enemy’s reach.
[pause]
So that Your treasured ones may be saved,
rescue us with Your right hand, and answer our pleas!
God’s voice has been heard in His holy sanctuary:
“I will celebrate; I will allocate Shechem
and the Succoth Valley to My people.
Gilead belongs to Me, and so does Manasseh;
Ephraim is the helmet that protects My head;
Judah is the scepter through which I rule;
Moab is the washpot in which I rinse My feet.
I will throw My shoe over Edom in conquest;
prepare for My victory, Philistia. Cry out because of Me!”
But who will take me into the fortified city?
Who will lead me into Edom?
Have You not turned Your back on us, O God?
Will You stay away and not accompany our armies, O God?
Help us against our enemy; we need Your help!
It’s useless to trust in the hand of man for liberation.
Only through God can we be successful.
It is God alone who will defeat our enemies and bring us victory!
The Book of Psalms, Poem 60 (The Voice)
[Psalm 25]
A song of David.
ALWAYS I will lift up my soul to You, Eternal One,
BECAUSE You are my God and I put my trust in You.
Do not let me be humiliated.
Do not let my enemies celebrate at my expense.
CERTAINLY none of the people who rely on You will be shamed,
but those who are unfaithful, who intentionally deceive,
they are the ones who will be disgraced.
DEMONSTRATE Your ways, O Eternal One.
Teach me to understand so I can follow.
EASE me down the path of Your truth.
FEED me Your word
because You are the True God who has saved me.
I wait all day long, hoping, trusting in You.
GRACIOUS Eternal One, remember Your compassion; rekindle Your concern and love,
which have always been part of Your actions toward those who are Yours.
Do not HOLD against me the sins I committed when I was young;
instead, deal with me according to Your mercy and love.
Then Your goodness may be demonstrated in all the world, Eternal One.
IMMENSELY good and honorable is the Eternal;
that’s why He teaches sinners the way.
With JUSTICE, He directs the humble in all that is right,
and He shows them His way.
KIND and true are all the ways of the Eternal
to the people who keep His covenant and His words.
O LORD, the Eternal, bring glory to Your name,
and forgive my sins because they are beyond number.
MAY anyone who fears the Eternal
be shown the path he should choose.
His soul will NOT only live in goodness,
but his children will inherit the land.
ONLY those who stand in awe of the Eternal will have intimacy with Him,
and He will reveal His covenant to them.
PERPETUALLY my focus takes me to the Eternal
because He will set me free from the traps laid for me.
QUIETLY turn Your eyes to me and be compassionate toward me
because I am lonely and persecuted.
RAPIDLY my heart beats as troubles build on the horizon.
Come relieve me from these threats.
SEE my troubles and my misery,
and forgive all my sins.
TAKE notice of my enemies.
See how there are so many of them
who hate me and would seek my violent destruction.
Watch over my soul,
and let me face shame and defeat
UNASHAMED because You are my refuge.
May honor and strong character keep me safe.
VIGILANTLY I wait for You, hoping, trusting.
Save Israel from all its troubles,
O True God.

Mel’s Big Fantasy Place-Name Reference
So I’ve been doing lots of D&D world-building lately and I’ve kind of been putting together lists of words to help inspire new fantasy place names. I figured I’d share. These are helpful for naming towns, regions, landforms, roads, shops, and they’re also probably useful for coming up with surnames. This is LONG. There’s plenty more under the cut including a huge list of “fantasy sounding” word-parts. Enjoy!

A lot of places are named after historical events, battles, and people, so keep that in mind. God/Goddess names tied to your world also work well. Places are also often named after things that the area is known for, like Georgia being known for its peaches.
My brain was fried by the end of this so feel free to add more!
I hope you find this reference helpful and good luck world-building!

One of these days I’d really love to put the whole “fire, brimstone, and ash” routine behind me. Fuck knows what I’d do, but it’s got to be better than the day I just had.
And the day wasn’t done yet. He’d walked, for lack of energy for a portal or money for a cab, from Fort George to Hell’s Kitchen. It was as far as he could go, even though from there he was but a stone’s throw from home. But he’d sent the Defenders - his friends - away; portaled them down to the heart of Queens, where even a superheroic return wouldn’t have been in time. It was for the best, regardless of how much he knew they did and would continue to disagree with him. But the catastrophe now buried under Swindler Cove, feeding the roots of the flowers that grew there...
The world would be a brighter place for never having had to see what he had spirited away into the mirror dimension. That, he knew beyond a doubt.
But caring for that entire debacle had robbed him of everything but the capacity for his legs to move him vaguely southward. He didn’t know how long it had been - more than half a day he would wager, given the sun was setting in the west - but a lamp was on in Jessica’s window, and now that his ears weren’t ringing and his fingertips were no longer numb, that realization brought the world swinging dizzily back into focus. It was any other Friday night in Hell’s Kitchen. The shitty bars were pumping out well liquors and the occasional un-filtered water, the rats in the back alleys were peddling drugs and everything else under the sun, and Stephen Strange among them wanted nothing more than to see a friendly face.
Well. And to possibly pass out for a week. Hopefully not on Jessica’s couch, but he might not have much option in the matter if he kept stalling.
He barely got a word out of his mouth after she expectedly and brusquely answered the door before she was hauling him into a hug that finally seemed to crush his heart back into his chest, from wherever in the aether it had been wandering in his shock. He let out a tight sigh, ignoring its potential as a sob given he strong hands were shaking where they were cinched around his ribs. “I’m sorry,” he said, and she reeled back, glaring at him in the half light where he couldn’t tell if it was the gleam of the temptation to slap him in her eyes or wetness on her lashes. “But I’m okay.”
When she hauled him in by his hair and kissed him hard, he opted not to decide which. The kiss, really, was the only answer that mattered.

I spent a beautiful Sunday afternoon in Inwood with Jack Rossiter-Monley and Kara Grant — two members of this year’s Columbia Journalism School. They were talking with me about my master’s project, written 25 years ago. The future of journalism is in good hands. As Fallon grew older, she quickly found out that these people were swindlers and fakes. But upon more research, she stumbled upon the Order of Stearne. An ancient order that claimed to date back to the British Witch trials in the 16th century. This order had many magical artefacts and quickly taught Fallon that those notions that she’d grown up with, were more then fantasy. Fallon spent years working in the magical archives with magical objects, cursed objects and unlocking the secrets of spells. But the order had a higher calling for Fallon. At the age of 20, Fallon was sent on a mission with the witch hunters themselves. Witch hunters are the highest you can climb within the order, they hunt, judge and execute supernatural creatures that are causing harm within the human world. On her 21st birthday, Fallon saw her first witch. She was a normal woman. But with extraordinary powers. As someone interested in the mystical, Fallon was enchanted… but as a witch hunter. She knew better. Fallon watched as the witch was burnt for the crimes she’d committed. Fallon never returned to the magical archives. From that day forward, she was a witch hunter and she would be nothing less.
In nearly 30 years, Fallon has seen many crimes committed by humans and by the supernatural. She sees the need for the order of Stearne. They keep order in a supernatural world. They act where mortal police cannot. In her eyes, they have jurisdiction and the right to act as the ‘law keepers’ of the supernatural world. They don’t hunt after every single supernatural creature, just because they are supernatural. But they punish those that hurt others.  But in the eyes of many, it’s just a matter of time before the supernatural do hurt others. Unlike the others in the order, Fallon works alone. She rose easily within the order and is now considered to be an elder one. As an elder one, she cannot not only pass judgement on the supernatural, but on those within her own order.
Fallon is a feared name among the witch hunter community and she has many enemies within the supernatural world. For this reason, she rarely goes on missions herself anymore. However, when it comes to the punishment of a fledgling, she has no choice but to get involved. Aria Greaves was a fledgling of the order and after finding out that she was having an affair with a werewolf, her superior turned her into Fallon. Fallon feels no personal disgust for what Aria did. But she knows that Aria is a young woman who doesn’t know the danger of her actions. That’s why the punishment for fraternising with magic, was to be subjected to magic. Working with the Order’s magical researchers, Fallon passed the sentence for an ancient punishment to be carried out. Aria’s memories were to be taken from her and she was to be left in a town with nothing. The town had to be an enemy town. Fallon hopes that from this punishment, the girl will see the darker side of the supernatural and any affections that she had for the supernatural world will leave her for good. Aria’s ‘team’ have insisted on being present in the town and Fallon also has. She intends to ensure that her fellow order members remember themselves and do not interfere. The supernatural politics of Crestle Cove are also tricky. Where the order would openly hunt witches normally, they are unable to do so in Crestle Cove - where the town is controlled by the Crestle Coven. But that doesn’t mean that the order cannot respond if they are provoked…
Connections:
Order of Stearne || Fellow members of the order within Crestle Cove are inferior in status to Fallon. But that doesn’t mean Fallon is one to flaunt her status unless needed. She sees it as her duty and her service, to protect the members of the order. Especially the younger ones who have not yet seen all the horrors of the supernatural world. Those who are naive.
Sage North || Sage and Fallon go way back and not in the best way. Fallon stalked Sage many years ago, before Sage even knew that she had powers. Fallon could sense the magic within her. She has no idea that that was the power of a mother of Crestle Cove.
Aria Greaves || Falling in love with a supernatural creature is strictly against the moral code of the order. Even simply fraternising is. Fallon is not proud of the punishment she carried out. But it was a necessity. She has every intention to lift the spell, once the girl has learnt the harsh reality of the supernatural world.

Today’s reading from the ancient books of Proverbs and Psalms
for October 21 of 2023 with Proverbs 21 and Psalm 21, accompanied by Psalm 29 for the 29th day of Astronomical Autumn, and Psalm 144 for day 294 of the year (with the consummate book of 150 Psalms in its 2nd revolution this year)
[Proverbs 21]
The king’s heart is like a channel of water directed by the Eternal:
He chooses which way He bends it.
Everyone may think his own way of living is right,
but the Eternal examines our hearts.
To do what is right and to seek justice—
these please Him more than sacrifice.
The lamp of the wicked lights his way;
a proud look, an arrogant heart—all sin.
Wicked people delight in doing bad things;
their neighbors never see even a hint of compassion.
A naive person wises up when he sees a mocker punished.
A wise person becomes even wiser just by being instructed.
The right-living understands how evildoers operate;
he subverts them and ruins their plans.
Those who live to party, who pursue pleasure, will end up penniless;
those who enjoy lots of wine and rich food will never have money.
The offerings of wrongdoers are despicable to God;
it’s even worse when they bring them with evil motives.
[pause]
True blessings You lavished upon the king;
a crown of precious gold You placed upon his head.
His prayer was to live fully. You responded with even more—
a never-ending life to enjoy.
With Your help, his fame and glory have grown;
You raise him high and cover him in majesty.
You shower him with blessings that last forever;
he finds joy in knowing Your presence and loving You.
For the king puts his trust in the Eternal,
so he will not be shaken
because of the persistent love of the Most High God.
King, your hand will reach for all your enemies;
your right hand will seize all who hate you.
When you arrive at the battle’s edge,
you will seem to them a furnace.
For the fire of the Eternal’s anger, the heat of His wrath
will burn and consume them.
You will cut off their children,
lop off the branches of their family tree.
The earth will never know them,
nor will they ever be numbered among Adam’s kin.
When they scheme against you,
when they conspire their mischief, such efforts will be in vain.
At the sight of you, they will sound the retreat;
your bows, drawn back, will aim directly at their faces.
Put Your strength, Eternal One, on display for all to see;
we will sing and make music of Your mighty power.
The Book of Psalms, Poem 21 (The Voice)
[Psalm 29]
A song of David.
Give all credit to the Eternal, O heavenly creatures;
give praise to Him for His glory and power.
Give to the Eternal the glory due His name;
worship Him with lavish displays of sacred splendor.
The voice of the Eternal echoes over the great waters;
God’s magnificence roars like thunder.
The Eternal’s presence hovers over all the waters.
His voice explodes in great power over the earth.
His voice is both regal and grand.
The Eternal’s voice shatters the cedars;
His power splinters the great cedars of Lebanon.
He speaks, and Lebanon leaps like a young calf;
Sirion jumps like a wild, youthful ox.
The voice of the Eternal cuts through with flames of fire.
The voice of the Eternal rumbles through the wilderness
with great quakes;
He causes Kadesh to tremble.
The Eternal’s voice brings life from the doe’s womb;
His voice strips the forest bare,
and all the people in the temple declare, “Glory!”
The Eternal is enthroned over the great flood;
His reign is unending.
We ask You, Eternal One, to give strength to Your people;
Eternal One, bless them with the gift of peace.
The Book of Psalms, Poem 29 (The Voice)
[Psalm 144]
A song of David.
Blessed be the Eternal, my rock.
He trains my hands for war, gives me the skills I need for battle.
He is my unfailing love and my citadel.
He is my tower of strength and my deliverer.
He is my shield of protection and my shelter;
He holds my people in check under me.
O Eternal One, what is man, that You even care to know him?
or the son of man, that You are mindful of him?
Humans are like a passing breath;
their time on earth is like a shadow that passes over us during the day and soon is gone.
Eternal One, stretch out an opening in the heavens, and descend.
Touch the mountains, and make them smoke.
Send forth bolts of lightning, and scatter my enemies.
Shoot Your fiery arrows, and rout the enemy.
Reach down from Your high place;
save me out of the great waters;
rescue me from the grasp of these foreigners
Who speak only lies
and don’t have truth in their deeds.
To You, my God, I will sing a new song;
I will sing Your sweet praises to the sound of a ten-stringed harp,
For You deliver kings from their enemies
and You rescue Your servant, David, from the sword of evil.
Rescue me,
and save me from the grasp of these foreigners
Who speak only lies
and don’t have truth in their deeds.
May our sons be like healthy plants
as they grow and mature,
And may our daughters be like the corner pillars
that decorate a palace.
May our storehouses be full
with abundant supplies of every crop,
And may the flocks of our fields
multiply into thousands and tens of thousands!
May our cattle be strong and productive,
without miscarriage, without loss,
and may there be no riots or protests in our streets!
Happy are the people for whom all this is true;
happy are the people whose God is the Eternal!
The Book of Psalms, Poem 144 (The Voice)
