I really enjoyed writing that story, even if it never quite made it to completion, and it really warms my heart to hear other people adore my words too. They were always such a fun pair to write for, and I really do miss writing them some days, but they’ll always have a place in my blorbos.

This took me almost three weeks to finish. 

I just wanted to do a quick, sketchy thing because “HaHa, motorcycle Pokémon, HaHa”, but that didn’t work out. Not only did I do the “shading” for everyone twice (because I, for no reason, decided to put actual effort into Atems shading, which meant I had to go back and re-do everyone else for consistency), I had to take breaks between every single “piece” (like the jacket, the hair, etc.), because my brain just refused to stay focused for more than that. But I finished it end after adding some nice “lighting” in Photoshop (because Layer Styles and Masks in Krita are weird, at least for me), it doesn’t look as bad as I thought it would. Anyway, here’s Atem and Yusei chilling with their motorcycle-dragons.

And no, I still don’t know how to draw humans, but birds can’t ride motorcycles, only scooters.

I also tried adding an Image Description, but I’m bad at describing things, so I’m sorry if I either did it wrong, or it’s not very useful.

Hi! On the topic of Suppression, I was wondering if it would be okay to ask you what was left in the story? Like what were you planning to do for the ending and such? I hope this isn't rude to ask, I've just always wondered how you were planning to wrap things up.

Hey anon! I don't mind at all, so don't stress about that. I'll admit that a big part of not finishing the story was due to me kind of falling out of the fandom a fair bit, and kinda going through some hefty behind the scenes malarky with moving across the state and all.

As for what was actually going to happen: chapter nineteen was due to pretty much be the last one out, depending on how long it got, with an epilogue to follow.

Everyone was due to meet up on the weekend for a casual get-together, chat about the upcoming Grand Prix, etc. Just relax and such. There was going to be a surprisingly meaningful conversation between Jack and Aki. A mention from Aki herself having tossed up and down for a little while on actually getting her license, to help tie it into that one ep where she does. Bruno and Yusei being nerds over the momentum engine lmao. A little bit of a filler start as they all get ready to hang out.

It was a chapter hinging on a certain scene where Atem is just kind of lazing on the grass in the shade, letting his memories sift and drift, knowing he was planning on telling everyone the truth, pacing through his head, and then it just strikes him out of the blue.

The real answer was the Crimson Dragon all along.

When Yugi was first brought through time via the Crimson Dragon, it was quite literally in the Crimson Dragon. Time travel futzing and magical crossing of the streams happened, and the spirit of the Nameless Pharaoh found himself a little connected to the giant worm. Hell, when Yugi first summons Atem during that duel, it was with a swathe of red energy after said time travel futzing, in the exact palette of the Dragon, which is the very thing that got me thinking of how to write this story in the first place.

Atem has the startling realisation that everything in his life from that point, up until the Ceremonial Battle, is a little muddied, kind of like how all memories fade. Except everything within that time span was like trying to remember something from when he was a toddler. There might've been flashes of faces or sounds, but he soon realises that even with a bit of historical prodding help from the others (prompting about certain duels afterwards, etc), trying to pick out specific events is almost... impossible for him.

It seems almost crazy to him that he's lived all those years alongside Yugi and Co, to only not remember it. Almost like something's interfering with the signal on the tv - the episode's still playing, and you can kinda catch snatches of conversation through the static and sort of work out the plot, but it's still all fuzzy and blurry.

It was a bit of a head scratcher, especially with Regulus and Ancient Fairy Dragon having told him essentially "No, you're right where you're supposed to be. We can't feel any sort of temporal displacement or time travel shenanigans around you whatsoever."

But hey, back to that meddling worm issue. So, since his soul was now tied to the Dragon, and his soul was technically freed after the Ceremonial Battle, instead of resting eternally, it continued on until it found that specific connection in time where the Dragon felt strongest to it. Which happened to be right when Yusei was dumped back into the future at the end of BBT.

Thus, the fic started, we get to see the dweeb stumble into traffic and the rest is kind of history.

What does that mean for the rest of everyone back in his time? Well, quite frankly, time happened, and since you can kinda do some fuzzy math and work out Neo Domino is at least two hundred years ahead of Domino City, there wasn't any real way to properly get back there. The Crimson Dragon only pops out in times of real need (which, even in canon, that's like four times total, including BBT), so there wasn't really any way for Atem to blip back into his own time.

He knows this, through hearing stories and talking with the others, and he'd already come to that stark realisation when he spoke with Regulus and Ancient Fairy Dragon, and subsequently found the area of what used to be the Kame Game Shop. It was just a matter of overcoming his grief enough to piece it altogether in his head and explain it to the others.

So, long story short, the final chapter or so was simply Atem revealing the truth of what had brought him to their time, and what he was planning on doing. He couldn't go back. That path was most certainly forever blocked to him. So he settled on simply adapting, as he was always good at. Duel Monsters hadn't changed all that much over the years, and he was more than skilled in that department, so in a world still ruled by it, it made sense for him to join the others and be a part of their team (and it was one more person to help pay rent to Zora lmao).

The epilogue was always intended to be a little bit of a flash forward. Of Aki and Atem learning their way around riding duels together, and perhaps even ending at the start of one. Or a dry and humorous line from Rua in regards to knowing about Yusei and Atem because duh, you two ain't subtle. Either way, it was meant to show that Atem had managed to find peace with everything that had happened to keep him in their time, and was simply doing what he did best by way of moving forward and carrying on with living.

He suddenly had his own life to live, all over again, without being bound to another, and he was absolutely going to grasp it with both hands.

Uhh, so this got kind of long, and I hope it does answer your question in part, Anon! If you have any more questions about it, I'd be more than happy to answer! Sorry again for how long it took to get to it but huzzah for tumblr mobile shenanigans ig kshjdhjk

On that note, I probably should update the rest of Suppression on AO3, and probably throw in the next chapter, even if it is incomplete. At least that way y'all can see how a bunch of this is worded lmao.
