actually so fascinated by the fact atem is 15. this is really important to me. hes 15. he was king of egypt. he died at 15. he sacrificed his life at 15.
its true that teenagers as a culture didnt exist until long after ancient egypt, and generally speaking in times as old as that, adulthood came a lot sooner, so its not like this fact is an outlier for the time period, but that just makes it that much more interesting to me. In a time when people, statistically speaking, had shorter lives, his life was even shorter than that.
I think a lot about core memories that I have as an adult now. And like. I have core memories I developed at 18, at 20, and Atem never even got that far. For him, developmentally, there were probably still a lot of Firsts he never got to live through. Or a lot of Introspective Philosophical breakthroughs he never got to have because he didn't live long enough to have the experience required to have them in the first place.
I wish there was more about that in the manga. Atem, who woke up and thought he was Yuugi, who had teenager problems for just a moment, before Shaadi came and took it away. Did he ever think about that? Did he ever think about his short life and the insurmountable responsibility placed upon him and wish for a moment that he didn't need to worry about destiny? Throughout the entire story he is so confident in it, so , just, willing to sacrifice it all over again because it's his destiny. What does that do to a person?
Even after he leaves, he's separated from the second life he was given and returned to the afterlife, torn away again from what he knows, like destiny is more important.
Did he ever yearn for freedom? Do you think seeing Kaiba break the laws of reality just to see him again made him feel some kind of way?

Understanding Kaiba and Atem's relationship is recognizing that their emotional intimacy isn't the same as we are used to.
Kaiba does not coddle. He refuses to lower himself or break character to carry anyone. Instead, he challenges and empowers, and he shows his support and loyalty through refusing to let the other fall. While Atem doesn't agree to everything Kaiba does or say, he understands him and respects him.
Think of it this way:
Let's say Atem can't walk. His legs ache, his feet lack support, and he is down on his knees. Kaiba is not going to pick him or carry him to soothing warm water. He is going to demand Atem to stand up and walk. And if he truly can't, then Kaiba will hold his arm as he stumbles. In his own fragilness, Kaiba gives him strength, and he wouldn't want him to change how he handles that fragilness.
Kaiba gives him a card, and Atem uses that card to defeat Marik without even looking at it. He knew it was there, and he draws it.
Atem, however, will ask if Kaiba is okay. He will kneel down, but he won't offer a hand because he knows he won't take it. The option is always there, but he will never insult his rivals' capabilities.
This is why their relationship always seems to fall on this weird swinging pendulum of two stubborn guys that always argue, and the boyfriends that don't know they're dating because card games are more important. Because their relationship is intimate but not stereotypically romantic.

I wonder what kind of story Takahashi would have created if there was no pressure/incentive to stick with the card game. If it were possible, I would really love to see an alternate version of Yugioh where it was just about games.
In a perfect world I would love to not only have a manga compliant reboot, but an entire retelling without the card game pivot.

This is for the AU prompt thing a pride mermaid au ?
*cracks knuckes*
I went through many versions of my prideship mermaid AU before I finally settled on this one <3
Official Title: 52 Blue. Coming to Ao3 feeds near you.
Kaiba is the head researcher of his eponymous research institution/aquarium. Along with typical rescue and rehabilitation, Kaiba and his team are focused on the discovery and preservation of new and or endangered species. A newly discovered trench in the red sea full of mysterious ruins brings Kaiba and his team to Egypt. An expedition into its depths yields a single merman, initially presumed dead. When weak vitals show, Kaiba insists on bringing the specimen back to Japan in hopes he'll wake up.

Obsiously Atem is STOOPID fine so if he had any social media talking about anything then the comments would just be ā€œwhatever you say beautifulā€

Analysis-Geek Anime fans are really stunting their pretentiousness potential by not learning Japanese. Imagine being even more cracked at media literacy than you already are because you can pick up on nuances that subtitles don’t catch, therefore having a deeper grasp on the story and characters. Imagine being able to read the kanji and extract even more meaning to have even more galaxy brained takes.
You’re holding yourself back from being the most annoying intellectual version of yourself and becoming the media literacy final boss.

A fic where Kisara is a rei-ayanami esque test tube human would be so extremely gas
A modern retelling of her ancient circumstances where she’s still needed as a vessel for the BEWD Ka 1 but the authorities around her are using totally different sci fi means of getting what they want.

(Evangelion rebuild spoilers) (kinda)
I’ve been re-watching NGE and the rebuild movies and I realized the way I wrote Atem in my fic in vitro ad astra is eerily similar to the Asuka shikinami lore. Both Shikinami Asuka and In vitro Atem are the final selection out of multiple clones that didn’t prove to be worth it (in Atem’s case it’s simply because Kaiba messed up the first several times when he attempted to artificially grow an Atem)
It’s interesting because I wrote in vitro before thrice upon a time was released, so I wasn’t influenced by Shikinami Asuka at the time I wrote the fic. (My primary inspiration was James Cameron’s avatar and how they grew the avatars)
However, I did watch NGE before I started writing yugioh fic so it’s possible Evangelion influenced me a bit, but Eva clones weren’t exactly on the forefront of my mind either.

Even with color schemes and naming conventions taken into account, have you ever considered that thematically, Kaiba is best represented as space and Atem as the sea???
Yes yes Kaiba Seto’s name is full of sea references and ancient Egyptian mythology is heavily associated with astrology (Atem is named after a literal SUN god) BUT think about it this way.
The sea is profound, yet murky, and less explored. Ancient and powerful. (Very Atem)
Space is widely studied. We know more about Mars than the sea floor* (Kaiba’s POV is explored more in the fandom and more understood more or less)
If we REALLY want to push the sea/stars lens, Kaiba’s space elevator being built above the ocean and forming a literal bridge between space and the sea (him and Atem) is a visual metaphor for the gap Kaiba is trying to close.

I wish there was more y/n self insert yugioh fic that wasn’t romantic. Maybe I don’t want to romance Kaiba. Maybe I want a Waffle House AU where we’re coworkers
