No.13 "It comes and goes like the strength in your bones."
@whumptober-archive
Cold Compress | Infection | "I don't feel so good."
Kieran woke up feeling not right, confused and shaky. He couldn’t work out why - had he had a bad dream and not remembered? His heart felt like it was pounding, and he whimpered, curling in on himself. He tried going back to sleep, but he really didn’t feel good.
“Alfie?” He whispered to his brother. “Alfie!”
He didn’t wake up, grumbling and rolling over in bed. Tears threatened to fall, his lip trembling, and he grabbed his little cat toy, his mind made up. He stood up on shaky legs, feeling dizzy and weird, but padded down the hall, pushing the door to his Dads’ room open.
“Dads?” He called out into the darkness.
It was Tai who woke first, groaning softly before sitting up. “Kit? What’s wrong?”
“I don’t feel so good.” He whimpered, padding over.
“Oh, Kit. Do you feel sick?”
“No. I just feel all wrong.”
Tai nudged Harrison next to him, helping Kieran up onto the bed and into his lap. “Can you try and use your words? Do you feel all dizzy? Like you’ve been spinning around in circles? Or do you feel all sweaty and hot?”
“Yeah dizzy.” He mumbled, burying his face in his Dad’s chest.
"You're absolutely drenched, Kit." Harrison rubbed Kieran's back.
“Don’t feel well.”
And of course they were still waiting for his monitors, his having come off during rough play with his brothers. "Tai, can you get your kit?"
“Yeah, course. You go cuddle with dad, Kit.” Tai said, gently moving him over. He reached for the kit in his drawer, digging around to find it.
"Oh, kiddo." Harrison took Kieran, bundling him in his arms. "You must feel rubbish."
He nodded. “Mm.”
"You're gonna be okay."
“Don’t feel well.” He whined.
"Can daddy borrow your finger?"
He nodded again, stretching out a shaky hand.
“Thank you, kit.” Tai said, grabbing the lancet he needed. “Little poke, okay? It’ll hurt but only for a second. Ready?”
When Kieran made a small noise, Tai quickly did what he needed to, glad he’d flicked the light on by the bed. The glucose monitor beeped as it did its job, and Tai let it read as he fussed over his son.
“Well done.”
"You're being so brave."
“So, so brave. Braver than me, for sure.”
Harrison leaned over, impatient. "What is it?"
“Uh, 3.2.” Tai murmured. “You’re a bit low, Kit.”
"Why don't we get some juice?"
“Yeah, some juice and maybe some toast?” Tai said. “You cuddle with Dad and I’ll go get it. Do you want jam?”
“Yeah. Strawberry?”
“Of course.” Tai said, kissing the crown of his head.
"You're gonna be okay." Harrison held him close. "Well done for coming and waking us up."
“I tried waking Alfie up but he was asleep.” He grumbled.

Can't Fight The Bloodline.
Can't Fight The Bloodline. https://ift.tt/QvW6dcP by alxclightwood It had been two weeks since he and Alex had started officially dating - behind closed doors at least. Of course, they were still getting to know each other, despite their frequent texts, phone calls and stupid midnight selfies, and there was a lot he didn’t know about Alex. And a lot that Alex didn’t know about him. Unfortunately, it’s a Tuesday afternoon in February when he discovers something pretty major about Henry. Proposition: t1d whump (type 1 diabetic) I speak from experience
- low blood sugar (hypo glycemic): shakey, collapse, pass out, waking up in the middle of the night, having to put everything they have into just getting out of bed, and stumbling down stairs and searching for juice or sugar of some kind, feeling like everything is getting harder and harder to do, realizing they don't have a juice or any sort of sugar and having to wait out that exhausted, sick, weak feeling until you can find something.
"You have to stay awake, drink this."
"Um I don't, I think my sugar's low."
"Can you get me a juice?"
- high blood sugar (hyper glycemic): temperament, exhausted, confused unable to really explain what you're thinking
"Ugh, I feel like crap."
"Just let me sleep!"
"Yes I tested my sugar!"
"Leave. Me. Alone."
- getting shots, pricking finger, using infusion set, its painful but you get used to it
"I'm not that hungry, can we just not do this?"
"Do I have to?"
- whumpee passes out, caretaker has to learn how to use the glucagon
"That's a really big needle."
"Hey. Hey! Can you hear me!? No.... ok, let's do this."

What do you like to read about in stories where characters are diabetic?
Do you want slice of life? Time of diagnosis or an established chronic illness? An emotional reveal to friends/family?
How about a Sick Fic where you feel like you’re not alone because clearly the writer gets it? Do you think it’s fetishistic to type out a whump/angst scene where every detail of suffering is described?
Should the character deal in solitude or have multitudes of diabuddies? How many characters are “too many” to be diabetic, or should they all be diabetic?
Do you look for perfect treatment in every way or do you want someone being stupid and knowing it because life is hard and diabetes sucks? Do you look for a happy ending regardless of choices, or do you expect realistic consequences from the character’s decisions?
Do you like it to be subtle, where they have it and they talk about it here and there and you see a cgm or a pump but it doesn’t come up that much? Do you think it’s disrespectful or unreasonable to have a character with diabetes and have the diabetes stay in the background?
Or do you prefer the character’s struggle with diabetes to be front and center, the main point of everything? Or do you think a reasonable balance is possible?
Like I know where I usually sit on things but I’m curious about other people’s thoughts.
There’s so much involved when you have diabetes, and so many, many ways you can write about it. Everyone also has different experiences with their diabetes, so I’m sure we all have different thoughts about it and how we want it represented.
So how do you want to see t1d in fiction? How do you not want to see it? Do you think it’s possible to find the ✨ perfect ✨ representation, either in fanfic or original fiction?

now newt you may be thinking you’ve decided to double major and have a minor in your greatest act of nomative determinism yet how could you POSSIBLY have time to keep your mind sharp and sexy with real books and still read fanfic? well i’m going to college in a pandemic, that’s why. hardest battles sexiest soldiers and all that. here’s some white boy tuesday.
Overworked by Ferrety
WHAT a good good depiction of a meltdown and an even better autistic hermann. great fresh voice that feels true to character, the buildup is well paced so that when the h/c does hit it’s well-earned and cathartic, and all in all some really good classic lab era whump
double back by @ghostpressure
ghost drift translated to prose is really hard to pull off, so big kudos for keeping things poetic and mind-fucky, but still coherent and easy to understand. i love the little crystalized moments we get that tell us how clearly hermann is cataloguing them, which is a great detail to show inner thoughts rather than telling. i love love love the dialogue; it bounces the line between proper banter and the more serious, introspective tone the fic takes very well
All Clear by @trifoliate-undergrowth (NSFW)
this bitch has the TROPES. hate makeouts? arguments turn to more? trapped somewhere together and tension rises as they’re forced to wait it out? WALL SLAM HELLO. never before have i actually seen so many classic newmann faves for nsfw in one place and it’s like the scholastic book fair for adults. very cute voice for hermann as well, because oh yeah, he really is a dude in his late 20s and not actually an 80 year old turtle in a sweater
heat of the moment by @kingeiszler (NSFW)
if any of you so much as LOOK at me i will stomp you to death with my hooves. trans horny newt rights also i was NOT expecting that angst with a happy ending moment at the end but like fuck. this fic is packing about as much good stuff as the front of newt’s hot topic jeans. hermann gottlieb god of WAP
Dress Code by @arcanemoody
there are not enough fics centered around newt and his self-image post-pru and ESPECIALLY not enough dealing with him finding his style again. i think this concept is such a good one to explore nonbinary newt through (if i get a single “kinnie” in my askbox i’m writing a fic where stan twitter outs the precursors as possessing newt because they made an account and popped off. do not test me you all know i’m fucking crazy but i’m free) since so much of gender presentation is in clothes, along with the other stuff the precursors clearly took over in uprising. and then i know we all love to interpret the “whoever will take him” as newt being bi but i’m always glad when it’s noted in fic, and the way it’s used to develop his character works very well
The Geiszler-Gottlieb Wedding by Goldmoth
if for nothing else please go to the second chapter of this fic and read the playlist because i literally fell out of my bed laughing and had a bump on the back of my head the size of a cherry. worth it.
Baby, I’m a fool for you by @that-one-fandom-chick
wingman vanessa supremacy. twilight soundtrack supremacy. hermann meeting newt while he’s in a band SUPREMACY also with a lot of these fics combining it with “first meeting” everything usually goes wrong, but it was so refreshing to have that extremely cute diner scene at the end.... the old friend mitski vibes of it all........ gay hands hermann rights
Now We Have the Salad by MnemonicMadness
i wanna say right off the bat this concept tickles me so deeply because if a non diabetic person switched bodies with a t1d (moi) i would have to helicopter parent 90% of everything they did if i didn’t want to, like. die. or at least have a fucked a1c. anyway this is a really great twist on the body swap trope that takes full advantage of hermann’s disability as a plot point, and with the added variety of being post-uprising. that last bit is what makes the story work, actually, because if it were simply pr1 era, you wouldn’t really have an excuse for newt so desperately wanting to give hermann time in a pain-free body without it coming off as pitying and insensitive. but tack on the guilt of the precursors, and what they did to hermann, and you have the perfect justification for newt’s actions. smart writing! and some good old mortifying ordeal of being known that stays tasteful in context
i’m drawn to you, honey, like the sea to the fisherman’s daughter by @campgender
i love a good post pr1 beach house fic i cannot lie! “newt and hermann don’t have ppdc jobs anymore but they sure do have trauma!” fics have sort have gone out of fashion post-events that occurred in 2018, but this one is a very good blast from the past. i love the beginning, which is such a fucking accurate depiction of how people used to having to be hyper competent in traumatic situations react to it being all over abruptly. i LOVE LOVE the ending, it’s so true to character and what i hope a good pr2 would have done for newt. this thing is chock-full of so many good lines, like “Maybe I don’t know how to live with nice things.” fucking MOOD and “’If you’re good enough at what you do,’ Hermann says firmly, ‘which you are, people tend to pretend as if the rest of it doesn’t exist.’” is so so accurate to the academia climb when you’re disabled, let me fucking tell you. great moment after great moment.
I’ve Got Your Letter by @coloredpencilroses
A if i rec this then ten things i hate about you au in my mouth please. please. please. anyway this fic is SO fun and good i love the writing style and how the humor is fun and consistent throughout both povs, the slowburn keeps things agonizing but has enough fun characters and plot to keep you invested and not just begging for an end so you can skip to it, TENDO KING OF BRAIN CELLS, and i haven’t seen you’ve got mail so i’m literally saving it until this thing finishes to keep the suspense. excellent fic for autumn
now usually this is where i plug my most recent work but since #theprecursorsareoverparty has spawned a more vitriol and hateful reaction than i ever could have dreamed, read i never liked that ending either and get yourself some culture. and stan tom stoppard

Day 7 - First Night in Hospital
@mediwhumpmay
Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 - A continuation of a prompt from Whumptober, which in itself is a continuation of a Sicktember prompt 😅
“Stay put for a minute, I need to organise a space for him. One minute, alright?”
"Just getting everything organised." He reassured. "Thank you for taking us seriously."
“I’m sorry it’s taken this long for someone to take you seriously. We’ll get this sorted now.”
"Thank you."
Harrison turned to his husband, stroking through his son’s hair.  "I knew he wasn't well, Tai."
Tai sighed. “He’s being looked after now.”
"What if they left it too long?" He whispered over Kieran's head.
“They’ll get it sorted.”
"Yeah."
Kieran gave a quiet whine, his hands over his stomach again. He curled into his dad, trying to seek some relief.
"You gonna be sick again, Kit?"
He nodded, his eyes wide. “My tummy hurts.”
Harrison's heart broke further, and from the look he exchanged with Tai, he wasn't alone. His husband shoved the empty bowl at them, pressing the call bell for some more.
One of the nurses appeared a short while later. “Sorry it took so long, can I help you- oh. You poor thing. I’ll go and grab you some more bowls, two seconds.”
"Thanks." Harrison was beyond stressed, rubbing Kieran's back and muttering soft encouragement between bouts. "You're alright, Kit. It's better out than in, right?"
The nurse appeared moments later with more bowls and tissue. “Here, and let me get rid of some of these used ones, yeah?”
Kieran roughly wiped his mouth, though immediately vomited again. He made a small noise, a brief frown appearing on his face before everything happened at once. The bowl fell from his hands, tipping into his lap and he seemed to just crumple. Harrison was immediate to support him, but the worry and fear was so clear in his tone.
"Kieran? Kit? Kit, open your eyes, please, Kit."
Tai’s stomach dropped, the fear rising. He darted for the curtains, looking around for someone to help just add the nurse reappeared.
“I’m going to get a doctor, alright? Hold on for me.” She told them, pressing the alarm.
Harrison kept Kieran on his side, though he was still curled into him. Kieran was still stubbornly unconscious, everything becoming so much worse as he started vomiting again.
"Shit." Harrison whispered under his breath, shifting Kieran further over. He wiped his sons mouth, trying to clear as much as he could. This wasn't supposed to happen. Not to their family.
When the doctor appeared, his decision was easy. “We’re going to resus now, alright?”
Harrison glanced up. "On the bed?"
“Yeah. Let’s go.”
Steve had heard the alarm, had seen it was his grandkid's room, and rushed over, meeting them as they were wheeling Kieran out. Harrison was balanced on the bed, supporting a very clearly unconscious Kieran, the pair covered in vomit. Tai was white, far clear in his face, and even the doctor's face was guarded.
"What happened?"
Tai gravitated towards Steve, relieved to see someone else. “I don’t know. He was sick, and then sick again, and then he just went.”
"Kids can do that." He tried to convince, wrapping an arm around Tai. "It should be just a faint, just a response to all the vomiting."
“And Hars just… is Hars. He knows what he’s doing.” He mumbled, leaning against him.
"They're looking after him. He's gonna be okay."
“Finally.” He hated this. Hated thinking about the what ifs. Hated thinking his son was stuck with the same, miserable disease he was stuck with.
Steve pulled him in for a hug, holding him tight. "He's got all of us in his corner."
“He has. I’m just worried about him.”
As they pushed the bed into the bay, Kieran began crying, deep, whimpering sobs. Harrison's heart broke again, wrapping himself around his son, brushing through his hair.
"You're okay, it’s okay. You’re safe, dad's here, you’re okay."
Tai moved closer to his husband and his son. “We’ve got you, it’s going to be okay.”
"Daddy?" He asked quietly, whimpers breaking through. "I don't feel very well."
“I know, Kit. It’s okay, the doctors are looking after you. You’re going to be okay.”
"I want Alfie."
“He’ll come and see you later.” Tai said gently. “He’s looking after Levi now.”
"Oh. What about me?"
“We’re looking after you now.”
"But I want Alfie too."
“You can see him soon.”
Harrison hummed, his hand still in Kieran's hair. "Kit? Why don't we swap your pjs for some hospital ones? Get you nice and clean again, yeah? And they're gonna want to stick some stickers on you too."
“You’ll feel much better in clean clothes.” Tai told him gently. “Dad and I will help you, yeah?”
Kieran didn't have the energy to argue, letting them help. It didn’t stop the embarrassment though, his cheeks flushing red as he saw the mess he'd made. The panic had started to overwhelm him again, worried he'd be more than a little told off for the mess. Of course, nobody cared about it. It had been an accident and everyone knew that; it wasn't as if Kieran had asked to be that poorly. After plenty of reassurance, he was settled on the clean bed once more, leads and wires attached everywhere.
At some point, Tai had taken a photo, dropping it in the group chat to keep everyone updated. As sick as he was, he was settled. There were a few more tears as he was cannulated, the plan to sedate and insert more stable caths when he was ready. He was started on fluids, his blood pressure so low even for a kid. Insulin eventually too, a desperate attempt to start shifting things in the right direction - he'd worsened dramatically even since they'd first been seen.
While it was the middle of the night and he was bound to be tired, he'd only become more drowsy and irritable, and unfortunately for him, hadn't managed to entirely stop being sick.
With the help of a little sedation, they ended up getting more access, and passed an NG. He needed cranial imaging, and it was easier to manage when he was clinically as stable as he could be. And, with as much access as possible, just in case anything went south.
It seemed to be an age, but the scans came back clear and he was on his way to the PICU. Steve followed them, and while Kieran wasn't 100% with it, he felt better for having his grandad there too.
Kieran somewhat changed his mind once they'd transferred him, calling out for Tai. In the end, he hopped up on the bed with him, hiding his fear of all the needles and wires and machines and - everything. He wasn’t there for him, Kieran needed him. With a happy noise, Kieran snuggled closer, his head on his dad's chest, his favourite place to be, listening to the beats of his heart. He was quiet for a long while, and Tai was almost certain he'd fallen asleep amidst the low hum of Harrison and Steve’s conversation.
"Dad?"
"Mm? You alright, Kit?"
He gave a long sigh, still apparently feeling the sedation too. "Are we the same now?"
"What do you mean?"
"Because you have to take your…your antisugars."
He smiled. "My insulin, yeah. That's what's in that bag there, too. I think it's nearly 100% that we will match, though, so I'll be able to help with every single thing you need, and you can ask me anything at all."
"Promise?"
"Of course, Kit." He sighed past the lump in his throat. "You know how Daddy is a super doctor too?"
He nodded, looking up at Tai.
"Well, when I got diagnosed with 'di-ah-bee-teas'," he sounded it out properly for Kieran. "Daddy made sure to teach me everything. Sometimes he would even do my checks for me because I was a bit of a scaredy cat! But if you need me to help, or even daddy to help too, all you're gonna have to do is ask. I'm sure even grandad Steve would do it for you, too, if you asked nicely."
Kieran managed a laugh, snuggling closer. Tai's murmuring reverberated through his chest, and the circles he was drawing on his son’s back didn’t help keep the tiredness away. It didn’t take long for him to slip into sleep, content on Tai, and protected by his entire family.

Day 6 - Needlephobic
@mediwhumpmay
“I can’t do it.” Tai hated how his voice trembled. “I can’t do it, Hars.”
“You can, it’s okay.” Harrison encouraged. “It’ll take five seconds.”
“No, Hars, I can’t do it.” He insisted, shoving the lancet and the case with the glucose monitor back at his boyfriend. “I’m fine, I feel fine.”
“You need to do this, Tai. It’s important to check your sugars. And you can’t not take your insulin.”
“It’s fine, it’s fine. I’ll just be careful with what I eat.”
“It doesn’t work like that, you know that.”
Tai pulled a face. “I’ll eat and then I’ll like, go for a run or something. It’ll be fine.”
“It definitely doesn’t work like that. You need to look after yourself. It’s a tiny fingerprick, you won’t even feel it.”
“It’s a needle.” He protested, his voice low. “I can’t do it.”
His recent diagnosis hadn’t really fully sunk in yet. It had been so overwhelming, and it was a nightmare trying to manage everything. It was just his luck, he hated needles, and now he had to stab himself multiple times a day, to stop him ending up in hospital or worse. Hars had been great, especially since their relationship was relatively new. He’d sort of just stepped up massively, and Tai didn’t quite know what he’d do without him. He’d managed the fingerpricks yesterday, but for some reason he just couldn’t do it today. He’d been sat there trying for what felt like forever, and now the frustrated, anxious tears were threatening to make an appearance.
“How am I supposed to keep doing this?” Tai’s voice cracked, and he swiped angrily at his eyes where the tears had started. “I can’t do this.”
"Hey, hey. Look at me." Harrison softened, resting a hand on Tai's cheek. "You can. You keep going because I'm gonna be right there to help when you can't. I'll be with you every step of the way."
“I can’t even do a stupid fucking fingerprick!”
"It's not just a fingerprick, though, is it?" He said gently. "Because you know that it's gonna either mean you need to take more insulin or food, and you know it's not just a one off. It's hard."
“I’m the world’s shittest diabetic.” He grumbled.
"Can I let you into a secret?"
“What?”
"Nearly every single newly diagnosed diabetic is the same."
“But they’re kids and it doesn’t matter because they don’t know any different.”
"They're usually the ones who deal better with it. Adults struggle the most, and it's completely normal."
“I should be doing better.” He said frustratedly. “Scared of stupid needles.”
"You're doing brilliantly."
“Don’t lie.”
"I wouldn't lie to you."
He rubbed his face. “Can you just do it for me?” He whined.
"Just this once. You can do the next one, yeah?"
He sniffed. “Yeah. I’ll try.”
Harrison leaned in to kiss him. "We've got this, yeah?"
“I don’t think I’ve got this.” He mumbled.
"Maybe not yet, but I've got you."
“I have to do this for the rest of my life.” He said. “What about when you’re not here? When I’m at work? When you’re at work?”
"Then we'll work something out."
“I don’t know.” He said, leaning against him. “I don’t know.”
"You'll be okay. Want me to do this one?" He asked gently.
He nodded. “Please.”
"Alright. Sharp scratch, yeah?" He warned, watching Tai's face.
Tai squeezed his eyes shut, pressing his lips together. “Mm.”
Harrison was as gentle as he could be, moving to hold Tai's hand properly once he'd got the sample. He gave it a moment to make sure it was reading, then twisted their hands to his mouth, giving Tai's a soft kiss.
"Well done."
He winced as he felt the sharp bite of the needle, pulling away. Harrison’s hands, whilst gentle were strong, and he wasn’t going anywhere. As his lips brushed his fingers, he looked over at him.
“Ow.”
"I know." He murmured, not moving their hands. "I'm sorry."
“It’s okay.” He mumbled. “What’s it saying?”
"Wanna place bets on it? What do you think it is?"
“I don’t know. It’s been on the high side the past couple of days.”
He hummed. "It's 8.3. A little high still, but you're gonna have something to eat too."
“And now I need to take my meds, don’t I?”
"Yeah. Did you weigh your carbs?"
“Mm. Yeah.”
"How many units are we having then?"
“Um…” It took Tai a moment, feeling like an idiot as he stumbled over the maths in his head. “Three?”
Harrison thought a moment. "Four. You've got your mealtime, which is three, that was right. But you've been sitting high, right? So we need to add a unit to correct that."
“Oh, yeah. Of course.” He looked down at his lap.
"Hey."
“Mm?”
"Can I let you in on a secret?"
“Another one? Spoiling me.” He joked weakly.
"Arse." He teased. "I didn't do the maths in my head. We've got the ED app, you'll be able to get it too. Makes life easier."
“You always know what you’re doing.” He grumbled. “Mr Know It All.”
"Ouch."
“Love you really. Will you do my insulin for me too? Just this once?”
"I shouldn’t, but come on. Just this once."
“I’ll do it later.”
"You will. You're gonna be just fine."
He nodded. “Yeah.”
Tai didn’t know how he was going to get through this, he really didn’t, but it didn’t seem half as scary with Harrison by his side.

It's Always One Step Forward, And Three Steps Back.
by alxclightwood
He was fine, he didn’t need to sleep.
He blinked several times, desperately trying to force his eyes open. But it was inevitable that there would come a time his eyes drifted closed, and didn’t open again.
What he didn’t anticipate however, was his blood sugars dropping whilst he slept, with no alarm to wake him to fix it.

I really hate daylight savings time but to make it even worse it really throws off my insulin pump’s basal rate and my blood glucose reaction times 😖 gah
Like who thought changing the day’s regular schedule by a whole entire hour was a good idea? Looking at you ben franklin! 😖

Here’s a starter-list of things you can search for if you’re looking for diabetes-related stuff in fanworks or other online fiction:
(aka a list I could have used years ago because I’m an idiot and don’t think to use keywords)
Diabetic Character
___ Character of the day
Diabetes headcanons
Hypoglycemia/hyperglycemia
Diabetes
Literally just put diabetes in the site’s search engine
That’ll help
I said I could be an idiot sometimes ok 😆

I was hoping to have this up by November 1st for diabetes awareness month, but as usual, I’m late. Anyway, here’s the link to my AO3 collection of fics where characters have type 1 diabetes.
Anything in the collection’s works feature the main character being diabetic or the diabetes being a primary focus of the story.
The bookmarks are less focused and range from diabetic characters to non-diabetic hypoglycemia to fandoms where there’s a canonical diabetic character but not a focus on it in the individual fic. The bookmarks are all tagged as clearly as I could make them. I listed the specific tags you can filter by in the collection’s FAQ.
If you find a fanfic or other kind of fan work that you would like to see added to the collection, you can 1) add it to the collection’s bookmarks (please add the appropriate tags), 2) invite it to the collection and wait for it to be approved (the collection is open but moderated), or 3) send me the link and l’ll add it myself.
I hope people find this useful :)
*If you’re not diabetic and you’re wondering what National Diabetes Awareness Month is about, I encourage you to look up the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) or Beyond Type 1 for more details.

Tumblr media
I’m so excited about this!!!
When I first started looking for fanfiction with type 1 diabetes in it, I was pretty disheartened to find several hundred fics—each and every one having a high chance of being tagged incorrectly by people trying to be funny instead of accurate.
I knew I would eventually wade through every one to find what I could, and I made the T1D in Fandom AO3 collection to easily mark the ones that actually had diabetes.
I’m nowhere near done 😰 but I’ve managed to find one hundred and one fics so far that really do have t1d in them, or a very select few without that show low/high blood glucose well enough to respect.
The statistics of what we’ve got to offer readers so far:
The collection’s works:
25 stories with a type 1 diabetic main/POV character
It says 27 fandoms, but that’s because if you tag Batman (All Media Types) AND Batman (Comics), it counts those as individual fandoms. It’s really more like 18. Which is still a pretty impressive number.
Those 18 fandoms range from popular ones like Marvel, DC, and Star Wars to more niche ones like Grimm, the Baby-Sitters Club, and Lazytown.
Ratings include Teen and Up (13), General (10), Unrated (1), and Mature (1)
Warnings include None Apply (17) and None Chosen (9)
Categories include Gen (9), M/M (9), F/M (2), and Other (1)
The fandoms with the most fics are Supernatural (3) and Spiderman (Tom Holland Movies) (3) tied for first place
