- Jeremy Jackson-
Jeremy Jackson, also known as Tackyshack, is a photographer who first discovered light painting by playing with glow sticks; he specialises in experimenting with capturing light in different colours, and shapes, by creating expressive strokes with light pens.
His lively and vibrant pieces create imagery which I think resembles very expressive masks, which have a futuristic tone. I also find that much of his work reminds me of the galaxy, and how space and time is imagined in film and television, with the use of bright colours and lines which are fast strokes, as well as blurred strobes of light, which move in a flowing type of motion, it also resembles a sense of chaos which is portrayed within space.
Jackson shoots his light painting with both 35mm film and also digital camera. He uses digital cameras for convenience and film for colour saturation. Jackson tends to shoot is paintings in his own garden, he says that he has a “level of comfort” when he shoots in his own garden, allowing him to be free and expressive.
His work relates to the project theme, because it creates a galactic mood, presenting the theme of ‘Multiverse’. It also links to my own experimentation with light painting, as both myself and Jackson have created quite expressive and atmospheric using coloured lights. Both our work has the blurred stroke effect, and have the space-like colours, however his work is much more structured with a more symmetrical pattern within many of his outcomes (creating a sense of order amongst the chaos of his colours and strokes), whereas my experimentation is much more irregular, chaotic.
Jeremy Jackson’s work has inspired me to create more structured patterns if I decide to do further light paintings in the project for the final outcome, so that my images have both senses of order and chaos, instead of just scribbling strokes of light. Overall, I really like his work, and find his use of pattern and line very fascinating.

Portal trick photo done with light painting #5yrsago
Tumblr media
Tackyshack's "The Portal is a Lie?" is a beautiful trick "painting with light" photo -- a camera is set with its shutter open in a dark place, and small lights are used selectively to illuminate parts of the image, and to draw shapes in space. The photo simulates a person going through a portal from the game of the same name, and it's a rather ingenious use of the technique.

15 light painted stencil frames.  It's making me a little nauseous just looking at it.  I need to tone it down a notch or two.  Ha!
