Osaka Sky Tower
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The original design had 4 towers arranged around a vast central atrium. Only 2 were completed, resulting in something that looks like a Space Invader landed.
Between them the escalators ascend to a viewing platform somewhat about my 10 storey limit. Reached by an elevator riding the outside of the structure, and often with long queues of eager tourists.
Yet for all this majesty, it's the quiet details that fascinate me. Like a reflection on a window strangely angled downwards, or the wave forms across the bridge linking towers and tourists and elevators.
I could spend hours inspecting the building in minute detail - but then what would I have to look forward to the next time I visit?

A glimpse from my bedroom window at 5:56 a.m. today, March 24, 2024, reveals a captivating scene. As the city slowly awakens, towering skyscrapers stand against the serene backdrop of dawn, while lush trees provide a natural contrast to the urban landscape. The soft hues of the early morning sky cast long shadows, creating a tranquil atmosphere that hints at the promise of a new day.

Steeplejack Yaunick, Going to Great Heights
“Nobody pays any attention to us any more,” Yaunick said. “Airplanes, blimps and autogiros have stolen our thunder.” Minneapolis Star (July 3, 1931)
In 1918, 16-year-old Harold F. Yaunick did his first steeplejack job—painting a smokestack in St. Paul. By 1931 he had touched nearly every flagpole and smokestack in Minneapolis and had painted the city hall flagpole 13 times. In 1935 he claimed work was getting too risky and he would complete his last flagpole painting job. But only a year later, in 1936, age 34, he was caring for over 200 flagpoles in Minneapolis on an annual basis. The blue-eyed, happy-go-lucky, carefree guy got a kick out of his climbs and said there’s more danger in stepping off a curb into traffic than in climbing hundreds of feet in the air. He hoped to do it well into old age. The job was lucrative too—making $25-$75 a day in 1936 (or about $540-$1600 today). Yaunick once won a $1,000 prize for perching on the L.C. Smith building flagpole in Seattle, 735 feet up, for 15 days!
Yaunick is pictured here on June 13, 1937 climbing the 84-foot high pole atop the 26-story Northwestern Bell Telephone Building to remove and replate the 4-foot ball at its top.
See more photos of Harold Yaunick’s climb in the Minneapolis Newspaper Photograph Collection in the Hennepin County Library Digital Collections.
