My company Yemaya Seaweed has been hand harvesting seaweed in the same region of the Mendocino Coast, Northern California since 2003. Since 2010 we have been harvesting, drying and selling high quality wild-crafted Brown and Red Seaweeds, thanks in part to John Lewellen of Mendocino Sea Vegetable and Edwin Nieves and their generosity in teaching the next generation of harvesters. It is a labor of love. We wake up at 4AM and drive from the Anderson Valley 1-2 hours to the coast where we make our way to the rugged Ocean with wheelbarrows, knives and bags. We give thanks, before each harvest, by singing, making offerings and prayers to Yemaya (the goddess of the oceans). We can only harvest during a minus tide which occurs on the full moon and new moon between April and September when the ocean recedes more than during a regular low tide; roughly 25 days of the year. The Ocean has many moods and she allows us a 2-3 hour window in which to cut the seaweeds. If she is in a good mood. If she is in a bad mood - Do not cross her! We return inland to dry the Seaweeds which can take up to 15 hours depending on the weather. We only rinse the seaweeds in ocean water to wash sand away. Never fresh water. This seals in the prana of sun, air and salt. Today is tallow rendering day. An unglamorous, but vital step in making this wonderful soaping ingredient. We picked up about 20 lbs of this gorgeous beef suet from @markegardfamilygrassfed and will be refining it into tallow for our Loma Mar, Big Basin and Bonny Doon bars. You can already tell its going to make excellent bars by its beautifully crumbly texture. Chunky rosemary and black walnut shampoo bars. They look like pudding pops but smell like fresh rosemary. Very confusing but still nice. Now they need to cure for six weeks and then I'll evaluate them and see if they need more time. Very bougie looking for sure which I really didn't expect but kinda like. I have been looking at shampoo bars online for a while now but they all seem extremely expensive for what they actually are. Basically bars of soap with good marketing. I nearly bought some then I realized I could make it myself far cheaper and specifically formulated for my hair. So I did. We have been rendering tallow all weekend. There is a lot of hype about vegan products, but we challenge you to think outside the box and learn why tallow can be a great addition to your body products: 1. We are farmers ourselves, and know the value and importance of supporting other local farmers. All of our tallow is sourced within miles of our home (Cloud Nine Farm, @chopshopbutchery and @hickorynutgap help us out with this). If you enjoy eating meat or veggies, you should help your local farmers where you can! 2. Many vegan companies use a lot of palm oil. While you can definitely can find sustainable sources, many palm oil companies do not use sustainable farming practices. Also, we’re not growing/processing palm oil in WNC but we DO have an abundance of tallow here, so we save the environment on freighting the product to our door. 3. Tallow is the most similar to our own skin’s DNA out of all the oils we use, and can provide natural vitamins and minerals you just don’t get with plant based oils. You can receive the benefits of these vitamins and minerals topically! 4. Tallow creates an exceptional bar of soap- arguably our favorite oil in soapmaking. It helps with making a really hard bar, and creamy lather. It also works beautifully in creams and body butter as it soaks in very well leaving a lot of moisture with out that greasy feel to it. 5. Tallow is not a super popular culinary ingredient, so it’s often a leftover byproduct. The cows are going to be processed anyways, so this provides a use for the tallow and helps to make every part count in their sacrifice. On our farm, we strive to not let anything go to waste if possible. Homemade tallow soap This is my first try at tallow soap and I think it worked ok, it's pretty and it's sudsy, but I won't know for sure for six more weeks when it's done curing. It's the same basic process as lard based soap. I went with a 5% superfat so it should be nicely moisturizing. As usual there are no extras that might mess with sensitive skin. No colors, no scents, no essential oil. Just good old fashioned soap. Because it's just a very basic soap it's good for nearly anything, hands, body, hair, dishes, laundry, feeding to the dog to mess with the neighbors. Maybe next time I'll try a castile soap, I think I can handle that.
