Oh the article about article about Alice Tegnér🥺❤️ It says that even at 79 years of age, she travelled around Sweden singing her songs dressed as Tant Gredelin from the books by Elsa Beskow. Tant Gredelin = Aunt Lavender – My hamster Vendela’s name can be connected to lavender so reading that warmed me♥️

An assignment for the picture book course I’m taking, in which we were asked to modernly interpret an old picture book. 

I chose Tant Grön, Tant Brun och Tant Gredelin, a Swedish picture book series by Elsa Beskow made in the early 1900′s. It’s basically about three ladies wearing green, brown and purple who are named after the colours. They end up taking care of two orphans. As it’s a pretty old series, so are the social norms in the books.

In my modern version, they’re poly lesbians who live together in an apartment in a Swedish suburb and take care of children in need of a home. Green makes sure the countless plants in the apartment are all healthy, Brown cooks the best food (swe: finns det ett engelskt ord för “punkgrytor”?) and Violet (who is described as vain in the original books) is super ripped and does embroidery. In the original, their neighbor Farbror Blå is a strict teacher to the children - in my version, he’s their fabulous dance teacher.

hello! first of all i recommend Astrid Lindgren, she’s the epitome of children’s literature! and if you want to understand swedish culture (which i guess is part of the point in learning a language?) i think reading her works would be a major key.here are some classics:

I was given this mug today. I have loved Elsa Beskow’s books since I was very young but Aunt Lavender was have always been my favorite. In swedish, her name is Tant Gredelin so that’s what I have known her as and not until today did I know her name on english is lavender. I had a hamster named Vendela. Her name can be connected to lavender. I had no idea of that when I named her. Fun fact: they have first names. Aunt Green is named Jeanette, Aunt Brown is named Marie-Louise and Aunt Lavender is named Agate-Julie.
