This Throwback (Thursday on Wednesday, apparently) brings us wayyyyy back to November of 2020 when we spent the night in Wilmington, Delaware on our way home from Florida. There were a number of breweries downtown, but we chose to walk to @flytrapbrewing which was a GREAT choice! They have an inviting outdoor space, including a stage area for live music (I wish I could remember who was playing bc he was awesome!), as well as a nice selection of delicious beers and tasty natural wines. I had a handful of half-pours and really enjoyed every one! So, if you find yourself in Coastal North Carolina, check out Wilmington and Flytrap! You can’t go wrong with either! Cheers! 🍻 #beer #craftbeer #ncbeer #wilmington #brewery #beertravel #northcarolina #patio #livemusic #taplist #beerisforeveryone #dcab #dcabeer #dcareabeer #beerstagram #instabeer #flytrap https://instagr.am/p/CrOs7R6pUIE/

An imbiber's guide to Barleywine Bacchanal 2023, hosted by the Beveridge Place Pub.
With Spring being less than two weeks away, it's important to get your Winter beer drinking in while you can!
Tumblr media
What better way than by visiting Beveridge Place Pub for their annual Barleywine Bacchanal, starting March 9th (thru the 12th)? Now in its 21st year, Beveridge Place Pub's celebration of all things barleywine invites guests to enjoy something new, something old, something barrel-aged, and something probably never seen again. That's right, among the list of beers featured at this year's event will be some from at least one brewery that has since closed.
Reaching out to the public house in Seattle's West Seattle neighborhood, Beveridge Place Pub responded with a list of some 25 beers. Besides this information, additional listings were recovered from their social media accounts. The result is a list of some 35 beers planned for the first day or as part vintage flights, throughout the week. Recognizing that many of you might be new to barleywine (aka barley wine barleywine style ale, or barley wine style ale), might be unfamiliar with the beers or the style, here's a handy guide.
Tumblr media
More on the Imbiber’s Guide
Broken down by vintage, followed by the Pacific Northwest, and finally "everything else", you're invited to compare names on Beveridge Place Pubs daily menu, against this modest list. Except for vintage releases, descriptions have been omitted to avoid getting caught up in long descriptions.
Finally, the current standard for a beer being vintage is anything older than (say) several years. So, for example, a 2019 Barren Wood will be found in the Pacific Northwest section, while an Oakshire Barleywine '14 is in the vintage category.
In fact, the 'Pub has announced the following beers (included in this guide will be tapped on March 9th.
Lumberbeard '22
Matchless Ol Lifewine '17
Midnight Sun Bourbon Arctic Devil '17
Oakshire '14
Pelican Mother of All Storms '20
Reuben's Brew Three Ryes Men '20
Sierra Nevada Bigfoot '22
Skookum Barren Wood '19
Stoup '22
To Øl Mine is Bigger Than Yours (Denmark) '15
Upright '15
Varietal/Skookum Sovereign of Nockmarr '19
Alesong Maestro '22
Boneyard Wooden Femur '21
Boulevard Rye on Rye #6 '19
Braufactum Arrique (Germany) '17
Buoy Love Lost at Sea '21
E9 Sekiu '22
Fremont Brew 6000 '22
Ft Feorge Etymology '22
Future Primitive TWO '20
Georgetown Chateauneuf-du-Chad '18
Guineu Barley Win (Spain) '20
Hair of the Dog Doggie Claws '19
Finally, as Beveridge Place Pub does not operate a full-service kitchen, guests are encouraged to bring their own food or choose from the limited menu at the 'Pub. To help find options, there's a link at the bottom of the guide that links to Google Maps.
And that's it! Remember to stay hydrated, well nourished, and above all enjoy the 21st annual Barleywine Bacchanal.

Episode 478 - The Smoke Shop
Seemingly popping up on more local taplists than ever, smoked beers are moving past being a niche brewery-only oddity. We find five beers that enlist smoked malts in their production to give off a surprising variety of flavors – and a refreshing level of nuance. Also, we role play our own Chopped appearances, spend some time living in the aftertaste, and accept that this might be one of the best…

[EN] “Good times” is @fieldhousebrewing ‘s slogan. That's exactly what we had on a sunny Sunday morning in the brewpub's patio. Located in a charming old village in downtown Chilliwack, this is Field House's second unit (the first is in Abbotsford. I already wrote about it, check it out on #BCbeerMoB 😉). They have a different aesthetic but both are very welcoming, cozy and have good beers and good food. The taplist has beers produced in both units. I prefer to taste the ones produced right there (West Coast IPA and Juicy Pale Ale are great options). To eat, a delicious and toasted Three Cheese pizza with Creamy Bechamel base, Mozzarella, Gouda and Grana Padano. check #BCbeerMoB for all the breweries I visited. . . . #beerVancouverMoB #BCAleTrail #thegrowlerbc #cerveja #beer #craftbeergirlfriends #beersoftheworld #girlsdrinkbeer #beersommelier #beerwoman #craftbeer #cervejaartesanal #ale #bcbeer #beersommelier #sommelierdecerveja #mulheresquebebemcerveja #craftbeerlife #mulherescervejeiras #beerwoman #drinklocal #bebalocal #brewtifulbc #craftbeerlover https://www.instagram.com/p/Cfr0BvZv-37/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

The #900 taplist at the Alibi Room delivered some treats with old world friends and new. The Cantillon Gueze and Fou Foune were a good warm-up, landing heavy on the Cascade Manhattan NW 2016 bourbon barrel-aged with sour pie cherries and Kentucky Peach barrelled blended peach sour. Highlights in between were Strange Fellows Kriek cherry lambic and ‘Lil’ Red One black current sour, and Boombox Rad Seeker IPA.

Happy Throwback Thursday! All the way back to last week when I was on a week-long business trip in Oklahoma City! 🤣 Had an amazing time hitting as many breweries and beer bars as I could. There are still a ton of other places on my list, but this was a good sampling… Started off the week with a work function at @socialcapitalokc - extensive beer list and some great tacos… Snuck off one night with a co-worker for some awesomely-named beer (Chug Norris, Brews Lee, etc.) and tacos at @stonecloudbrewingco The rest of the places, I hit over the weekend and I really enjoyed all of them… - @fasslerhallokc serves great German food and German & local beer in a large indoor space and outdoor Biergarten. - @fairweatherfriendokc had my favorite beer of the week in its DDH My Friend Nelson, a single-hop Nelson Saigon IPA. - And you can never go wrong with @oakandore - a craft beer bar that I first went to in 2016 bc it was on the old DRAFT Magazine’s top 100 beer bars in the U.S. list. The beer, food and service are just as good as the building is gorgeous! Do yourself a favor. If you haven’t checked out OKC’s food and beer scene, don’t wait; do it now! #beer #beerbar #okbeer #okc #drinklocal #supportlocal #oklahoma #brewery #drinkokc #drinkgoodbeer #taplist #greatbeer #dcabeer #dcareabeer #beerstagram #instabeer #beerisforeveryone #beerfriendsarethebestfriends https://instagr.am/p/CplfVjbJ8dv/

Reverend Nat's Hard Cider announces upcoming conclusion of business.
Tumblr media
Discovered on their website, Portland (Oregon) cidery and taproom, Reverend Nat's Hard Cider, will cease operations at the end of September. Attached is their full statement, found on the businesses front page.
"After 12 great years, it’s time to move on. September 2023 will be our last month in business.
Please join me in the Taproom any time now until Sep 24 but especially on Saturday Sep 23 as we celebrate all the amazing ciders and great people who have contributed to our incredible successes. I have three final Tent Show releases to share with you all, plus our two non-alc ciders will FINALLY be in cans for sale. Home deliveries are still happening on Fridays at least through the end of September.
Back in 2004, a friend of mine had a large apple tree in his back yard. We made apple pies, apple sauce, dried apples and apple butter. And still there were more apples. “Why not make cider?” I thought, having never tried cider before. I had a vague idea about bubbling airlocks and glass carboys but no idea what it would taste like. I happened to have a 20-ton house jack in the garage and some old timbers, so a half a day later, I had cobbled together a working juice press.
I clearly remember the taste of the juice of that first apple. Sweet, rich, a bit tart, a bit nutty; I was hooked. That year I made 5 gallons of hard cider. The next year, 15 gallons. The following, 40. Six years later I had 500 gallons of supremely dry hooch in my basement and I was becoming an increasingly better cidermaker. (Not to mention an increasingly popular neighbor. Friends were stopping by at all hours for a pint on the porch or a mason jar fill-up to take home.)
As a die-hard craft beer revolutionary, I experimented with beer yeasts, wild fermentations, Belgian ale spices, aromatic west coast hops and local fruit juices. My search for superior ingredients to make unusual ciders was all-consuming. As an historian of cidermaking (I have the largest cider book library in Portland), I recreated forgotten cider styles and practiced juicing and fermenting techniques long out of fashion. Permeating all these experiments was a desire to make ciders that no one else will make. I would cook a dish, eat at a restaurant, drink a beer or a cocktail, or peruse the farmer’s market, and be unable to contain my excitement for flavors. After making cider for nearly a decade, I concluded that, while apple-only ciders define cider for most of my fellow countrymen, my passion was in creative flavor combinations making cider in the spirit of craft beer geeks.
I started Reverend Nat’s Hard Cider in my basement, moved into an abandoned warehouse near the Rose Quarter in 2013, a larger building in 2023, and recently into a Taproom on 35th Place and SE Division. Now I sell my ciders in Oregon, Washington, Montana,  Colorado, Ohio and North Carolina, as well as British Columbia, Alberta, and Saskatchewan, a little bit spread thin across Japan, and a little bit in Europe. We’ve had an incredible run and I met so many amazing people and shared so many wonderful experiences. It’s been the best job I’ve ever had.
The last few years has been hard on us with COVID closures, changing consumer preferences, the sputtering of craft beer overall, and the decline of Portland as a worldwide tourism destination. But there is not a single reason why we are closing, just a combination of factors. I am sorry that our loyal customers won’t be able to enjoy these incredible ciders any more.
THANK YOU to all of you. My mega fans (Symposium anyone?), Tent Show members, Taproom regulars, grocery store customers and taplist advocates. None of this would have been possible without your support. Thank you.
THANK YOU also to: My great cidermaking team: Chris for Hellfire; Dwight for enthusiasm; Dawn for quality; Charlie for a lot of hard work; and Istvan for sticking with me until the end.
My great sales team: Delphina for bringing your hard work and creativity; Jason West for that fun ride in a pickup truck; Nate and Matt for running your own little Rev Nats island in SoCal; Matt for the Thanksgiving Day check-ins.
My delivery driver team of Sol, Emily, Brad, Kristen and Jason for your amazing flexibility.
My Taproom team: Jim for getting us into the cool kids club; Nick for all the awesome collaborative ideas in the taproom; Gemma and CLB for your outstanding passion.
My earliest investors, for believing in a big idea and my later investors, for keeping that idea alive.
My industry friends: Jeff Alworth for including me as one of the best breweries in Portland; Sean the Beermonger for early encouragement; Jeff Smith for my first sale and Drew Worden for buying all my Hopricot; Adam Milne for great friendship and counseling; Joe Casey and Doug Rehberg for being fantastic neighbors; Bill Bradshaw and Pete Brown for recognizing Hopricot way back in 2012; Tyler Brown for teaching me how to use hops; Son of the Smith, sorry I can’t be around for more collaborations; Sean Burke, Mike Wright, and Alan Sprints for showing up to my opening night. That was very nice.
My great distributors: All the folks at George’s Dist for being the best distributor an out-of-state cidery could have; Ricardo Linares, I know you really cared; Michael Walcott, Red Gillen and Aoki Eiichi for showing me a new world; Markus for giving me the shirt off his back and Karl for making me feel welcome; Jay and Taylor at Artisan for finding something that works against many odds; Jimmy Werbin and Scott Willis for showing me how a good distributor works. I should have signed with you guys in the beginning.
And finally my family, Sarah and Beck. Thank you for letting me follow a crazy dream. I hope it was worth it for you too."

Episode 470 - Schwarzs Unseen
More breweries are embracing malt-forward easy-drinking options as an essential part of a seasonal lineup, and the Schwarzbier may be one of the styles seeing the most taplists these days. For this show, we put five locally-made Schwarzbiers through a blind tasting to help us better understand the style and see how subtle variations can make all the difference for our arbitrary rankings. Also, we…
