#the framing of the humanities as feminine is wrapped up in this too#including the position of history between the humanities and social sciences I think#the ‘female’ interest in the Roman Empire is humanities and consequently defunded and devalued#but the ‘male’ interest in the Roman Empire is somehow exempt from that and more of a science because… it’s armies? fighting?#so college classes with majority female students actually studying the Roman Empire? insignificant; cut the department#but men tweeting doctored Marcus Aurelius quotes is the sort of stuff to be taken seriously#history as a discipline is very malleable and can be framed as a ‘soft’ useless touchy-feely humanities field#or as a ‘hard’ serious social science when politically convenient#and of COURSE that’s gendered.#yeah i'm thinking of my college latin/roman history courses where there'd be three to twelve women and one man at the seminar table#the national american attack on higher education is not unconnected from the increasing proportion of female students#and the accompanying perception of many previously-respected (previously-male) fields as feminine and thus to be devalued and defunded#can we not re-play that out as a meme. i don't understand the recent "how often do men think of the roman empire" trend. one of the most well-known recent academic and popular historians of the roman empire is a woman, mary beard. why do this? it isn't cute or funny if you think about the implications for more than five seconds
