Wait tell me something about commercial aviation safety that sounds cool.
okay so like, the engines being Important is an obvious statement right? because not only do they make the Plane Go but they're also the plane's electrical power plant. it's why you've got cabin lighting and A/C and flight attendants can make you food of various quality, and also, ya know, let the pilots have instrumentation. and modern aircraft can fly safely on only one engine! granted, your pilot will be landing that thing at the closest suitable airport ASAP, but it'll all in all be a fairly standard landing, probably just earlier and likely at a different place than you were planning.
but what if you lose both? like US Airways Flight 1549? i mean, beyond the fact you're now in a Giant Glider, the pilots are now flying said Giant Glider without all but the most basic, analogue instruments, right?
nope! (unless your pilots panic/are busy trying to keep the plane in control/incapacitated, to which then you have Bigger Problems, Sorry). there's the Ram Air Turbine, which will deploy automatically and use the air blowing past it to make electricity, though it'll be prioritized for cockpit instruments only. there's also the Auxiliary Power Unit or APU which has to be deployed by the pilots, but gives them even more power than the Ram Air Turbine because, if you've flown, i guarantee you've been on a plane that's used it, because that's the plane's power source on the ground when the engines are off, such as when at the gate.
if Flight 1549 sounds a bit familiar, that's because it's better known as the Miracle on the Hudson, AKA the A320 that landed on the Hudson River in NYC in 2009 after losing both engines to bird strikes at low altitude. and among the many brilliant things Captain Chelsea "Sully" Sullenberger did in that accident was almost immediately start the APU, which gave him and First Officer Jeff Skiles way more instrumentation a lot faster. in fact the emergency checklist made after Flight 1549 (because checklists for dual engine failure before it assumed you were at higher altitude, and thus assumed you had much more time to troubleshoot/try and re-start the engines) is pretty much just everything Sully and Skiles did based on pure instinct during that emergency, with starting the APU one of the first instructions. it's colloquially called the Sully Checklist for that reason.
anyway here are some more links to Wikipedia articles about really interesting air accidents (FYI none of these have fatalities so don't worry if you're sensitive to that sort of thing!):
TACA Flight 110: Proto-Flight 1549 effectively, a 737 loses both engines during final approach into New Orleans after hail ingestion into the engines. Captain Carlos Dardano (who is worth a look up on his own, this dude is a badass) safely brought the airliner to a stop on a levee.
British Airways Flight 5390: First Officer Alastair Atchison lands a BAC One-Eleven alone after Captain Tim Lancaster is partially ejected from the aircraft after the cockpit windscreen on his side is blown out due to improper maintenance. to an airport F/O Atchison is unfamiliar with. while also overflying London, some of the busiest airspace in the world.
Air Canada Flight 143 AKA The Gimli Glider: another loss of engine power, this time due to incorrect fuel loading due to Canada's then-recent switch from Imperial to Metric. pilots landed the plane safely at a closed down airfield that had been converted to a drag racing course. one of the most famous airplane crashes.
Federal Express Flight 705: (TW: attempted murder-suicide) okay this is technically a cargo flight, but it's one of the most badass displays of flying ever. a disgruntled Federal Express employee attempts to hijack the flight and crash it for life insurance payout and also revenge (he was targeting Federal Express' hub). despite inflicting all three pilots (this is old enough that this plane still had a flight engineer) with severe head wounds, they all fought off the attacker and landed safely, while also flying a fully-loaded DC-10 frighter like a fucking fighter jet to throw the attacker off-balance.
i also recommend the Mentour Pilot YouTube channel. it's run by an active 737 pilot who's also trains new pilots, so there's tons of good insider knowledge and he breaks down complicated aviation concepts into plain language very well. his videos are very well done and i always learn something new, even with accidents and incidents i've read extensively about.

TCA Month 2024
May is TCA Month! What does that mean? Well, let us explain.
TCA Month is an annual event dedicated to The Chipmunk Adventure, the first ever feature length film starring the Chipmunks! It started in May 2017 as a way of celebrating the film's 30th anniversary. Members of the AATC fandom have been celebrating it yearly ever since.
While TCA Month has been going on for 7 years now, this is the first time we've hosted it on Tumblr. So we figured it was a good idea to explain it for anyone here who hasn't participated before.
Celebrating TCA Month is relatively easy. Just share your love for The Chipmunk Adventure! Make videos, fanart, edits, anything you'd like. Just keep it appropriate and have fun! Tag any posts related to the event with #TCA Month 2024. We'll be reblogging TCA Month related posts throughout the entire event.
We look forward to seeing everyone's TCA Month content. It's almost here, just a couple more weeks to go!

Hallmark Media Rebranding Two Linear Networks
Tumblr media
There have been a lot of changes at Hallmark Media lately and even more are on the way. Twenty-year-old network Hallmark Movies & Mysteries will rebrand to Hallmark Mystery on March 6, while younger sibling Hallmark Drama will become Hallmark Family on Feb. 28, CFX has learned.
While it may sound like mere semantics, the revamps are a bit more substantial. Hallmark plans to unveil the new brands as part of its TCA Winter Press Tour presentations Tuesday. The change to Hallmark Mystery represents Hallmark leaning into the cozy mystery genre, with a record number of new and returning mystery series. On Friday, the net debuted its first historical mystery, “Gilded Newport Mysteries: Murder at the Breakers.” Starring Ali Skovbye, it’s based off a series of books from author Alyssa Maxwell, which opens the door for a potential franchise.
All clues point to a greater emphasis on Hallmark Mystery, with Alison Sweeney (“Days of Our Lives”) returning as Hannah Swensen later this year in Hallmark’s latest adaptation of a Joanne Fluke novel. Sweeney wrote her first script, based on the book “Apple Turnover Murder” and is executive producer on the film, “One Bad Apple: A Hannah Swensen Mystery.” Hallmark Media is committing to a bigger investment in mystery for the channel, though the plan for now is to still fund its “Miracles of Christmas” programming stunt, perhaps with a bit more of a mystery bend to some titles. The holiday programming stunt has performed well for the net, with December’s “Miracle in Bethlehem, PA,” becoming its #1 most-watched original movie premiere of the year and second most-watched in network history among key demographics
The rebrand of Hallmark Drama, which launched in October 2017, seems more like a clarification of its spotlight on storytelling for the whole family around faith, love and community.

You reblogged this ask to another blog: "is it just me or has pop culture seriously changed in the past decade? The Oscar’s have seriously downsized, like even the red carpet is bland and a lot smaller than it was before! The people’s choice awards are boring af and teen choice awards don’t even exist anymore! I remember growing up and looking forward to watching celebs on the AMAs but idk if that exists anymore either lol… like wtf happened?!"
//
Omg TCA really are nonexistent! It used to air in July but now the Kids Choice Awards airs in July instead of March! I also remember being excited to watch the KCA (I stopped watching that once I entered high school), TCA and even MTv Movie Awards which I also think has gone downhill. These un-prestigious award show were so fun to watch in the 2000s and early 2010s! They were never meant to be taken serious, especially MTv, but that's what made the MTv one so funny. It was so crude and, at times, unexpected. Now nothing is funny or entertaining anymore. As for the prestigious awards, yeah... they don't feel as big of a deal like the 2010s and before.
I didn't care for the TCA and KCA, but I loved MTv. It all honestly depended on the host, though. There were some good ones in the 2010s, but it went downhill after 2017 in my opinion, and I really cannot explain why. I never understood the People's Choice Awards. I don't care for any other prestigious award except the Academy Awards. Going back to hosts and hosts only, between the 2000s and 2010s, Hugh Jackman still takes first place for me. I mean.. look at this opening! Fucking iconic. Neil Patrick Harris, who hosted in 2015, comes in second place. Who's to blame? Well, the pandemic for one. That really screwed up Hollywood. Secondly, streaming services.
People just don't care anymore. 😔

This plant consists of 4 gas turbines + 2 steam turbines and generators supplied by MHI (Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd) and the 6 BFW pumps supplied by Hyosung Goodsprings. Ever since the commissioning stage of the plant in 2015, the plant has faced serious cavitation problems in the AR Valves protecting the pumps because the ARVs are often operated under extremely critical operating conditions. Plant operation logic and TCA Cooler operations require low flow rates below pump minimum flow, which makes the AR Valves operate at partial-load and quite often daily startup/shutdown operation. The main reason for cavitation was the – at times – very low flow rate and thus critical load condition of the valves. Low flow rates often cause cavitation in AR Valves.
Tumblr media
Due to the – at times – very low flow rate and thus critical load condition the valves suffered from cavitation in the initial years. In the current plant concept, which today is common for most CCPPs, each of the 3 boiler feed pumps (per steam turbine) has the capacity to provide the full rated flow of the HRSG-drum. This is one of the critical load cases which led to the damage in the AR Valves installed then. To cool the turbine, feed water is supplied to a TCA cooler (Turbine Cooling Air). In this heat exchanger, the cooling air for the gas turbine transfers its heat to the boiler feed water. The TCA cooler is not to be confused with the HRSG – its purpose is to cool the gas turbine unit, not to generate steam. This cooling flow is also significantly lower than the minimum pump flow and again this results in critical case of partial-load operation which can generate heavy cavitation on the internal parts of the ARV bypass branch, especially under a high-pressure application of 218 bar differential pressure at Qmin.
Tumblr media
Cavitation damage on a bypass valve head. When the bypass is closing as the process flow gets close to the required minimum, there is a very critical operating mode when the multistage throttles completely lose their efficiency and the complete pressure reduction (> 200 bar) is concentrated only on a small gap between piston and piston seat. In this single stage pressure reduction mode, the pressure inevitably falls below the vapor pressure and cavitation occurs with severe consequences for the bypass trim. Thus, the matter of point on ARV design is NOT to make pressure drop below vapor pressure at each pressure reduction throttle stage at any flow rate. The solution: Intermediate Pressure (SIP) and High Pressure (SHP) Valves In 2015, Schroeder, a German ARV manufacturer, was successful in solving this problem. By using a sophisticated hydraulic control system, the newly developed SHP series could avoid this wear critical bypass operating mode, even without any restrictions of the main flow range or the pump operating mode, as it is common for classic AR Valves. In  the next step in 2017, this hydraulic control system was transferred to the SIP with a simpler and consequently more competitive technical concept.
Tumblr media
The Schroeder Intermediate Pressure Valve (SIP) is the answer to changing operation modes in power plants. Since being operated in 2015, the plant had been suffering from AR Valves which design is suitable for regular operation at Q100, not for variable operating conditions - especially for partial-load operation which might bring extremely critical cavitation problems in the ARV’s internal parts of the bypass branch. And so, the plant had investigated which is the best solution among control valves, other automatic recirculation valves and the Schroeder Valves SIP series. Schroeder finally got the chance to demonstrate their SIP on this very challenging application because of the following reasons: - The SIP bypass branch design is exactly the same as at the SHP valves that have shown very good performance at other CCPPs - Osung CCPP & Ansan CCPP in South Korea since their installation in 2018. - The SIP is especially designed for intermediate to high pressure applications from 100 bar up to 250 bar with frequent plant operation below minimum flow rate conditions. - The SIP controls the bypass by means of a multi-stage piston and a sophisticated hydraulic control, which enables a defined multi-stage pressure reduction at all flow rates and avoids the most critical operating modes. This stands for almost cavitation-free or very light cavitation operation at all times. After almost 10 months, where nearly half of the operation time was operated in modulating bypass position (partial-load operation), the SIP was disassembled to be thoroughly inspected on the internal parts and they almost looked brand new. It is understood that a large number of those plant types suffer from the ARVs causing malfunctions that result in short lifetime of internal parts and, in return, require high maintenance time and cost. Schroeder Valves is confident that his SIP can be an ideal solution to respond to various operation load changes and is completely in line with their customers’ expectations. www.schroeder-valves.com Read the full article

Say Goodbye to Acne Scars with These Effective Removal Methods
Tumblr media
Scars from acne can appear on the face and other regions. For some, they are an unwelcome reminder of a painful and inconvenient condition. Home remedies and medical acne treatments, on the other hand, can help get clear of them. Natural, over the counter, and prescribed acne treatments are available. Chemical peels, which include salicylic acid, retinoids, and other creams, are options depending on the nature and extent of scarring. Laser treatment, microneedling, light therapy, and a variety of other treatments are readily available. In some instances, surgery is required.
Acne Scar Types
Depending on the type of scarring caused by acne, treatment choices may differ significantly. There are three major types:
Atrophic scars
These scars appear as tiny indentations in the outer layer of the skin.
Icepick scars are little scars that resemble pinpricks.
Boxcar scars are broader indentations with distinct edges.
Rolling scars have hazy edges and give the skin a rolling or undulating look.
They develop when the skin does not produce enough fibroblasts during the healing process. Fibroblasts are cells that play an important part in wound healing and collagen production.
Hypertrophic Scars
These appear when the skin produces an excess of fibroblasts as the acne spot heals, resulting in a raised scar.
Keloid scars
These are identical to hypertrophic scars, but they are thicker than the original acne area. Hyperpigmentation is common, causing them to be darker than the surrounding skin. They can be brown or scarlet. There might also be discomfort or scratching.
Medical Treatments
Some medical procedures could lessen acne scarring.
Depending on a person's skin type and the severity of the scarring, a dermatologist can suggest an appropriate procedure or set of therapies.
Options consist of:
Chemical peels
A dermatologist can suggest a peel that is appropriate for a person's skin condition, the severity of their acne, and their scarring.
A study showed that six out of ten participants who used a particular kind of chemical peel which is termed
trichloroacetic acid (TCA), had at least a 70% improvement in their acne scarring is mentioned by the authors of a 2017 study on treatments for acne scarring. The effectiveness of different chemical treatments may vary.
One study found that 25% of people who used glycolic acid did not experience any improvement in the visibility of scars.
To find the kind of peel that works for them, a person might need to experiment with a few various kinds.
Injections
If a person has hypertrophic or keloid scars, injections of corticosteroids may aid in softening and flattening elevated acne scar tissue.
A succession of injections usually makes up the course of treatment. A dermatologist can administer these injections once every few weeks while keeping an eye on the results in their clinic.
Dermal filler
Soft tissue fillers may be suggested by dermatologists in some circumstances to address atrophic acne scars. For rolling and boxcar scars, they might be especially beneficial.
Choices consist of:
Collagen-based items.
Polymethylmethacrylate.
Hyaluronic acid.
Polyacrylamide.
Poly-L-lactic acid.
Silicon.
Depending on the filler, the procedure might need to be repeated after a few months. For instance, hyaluronic fillings last about three months, but silicon and polyacrylamide might never need to be replaced.
The negative impacts of fillers will vary depending on the filler. Before choosing a course of therapy, always discuss the advantages and disadvantages with a doctor.
Microneedling
To encourage the body to produce more collagen, microneedling involves inserting microscopic needles into the skin around the scar. Through skin softening, this collagen may lessen the visibility of atrophic acne scars.
According to a 2017 study, microneedling improved the look of atrophic or indented acne scars by 31-62%. According to 2019 research, using collagen gel in addition to microneedling produced results that were noticeably better than using microneedling alone.
Microneedling, though, has its drawbacks. After the treatment, many individuals experience redness, pain, and inflammation. But eventually, these effects fade.
Laser treatment
Laser skin treatment, such as skin resurfacing, is done without the use of pesticides or scrubs. It exposes the fresher skin cells beneath the top layer of skin, which can lessen the visibility of scarring. Raised scars' appearance and texture can be improved with its assistance. The hue of hyperpigmented scars can also be lightened with pulsed dye laser therapy.
Based on the American Academy of Dermatology, intense pulsed light therapy may be a preferable choice for those with pale skin. Not everyone is a candidate for laser therapy. The sort of acne scarring and the person's skin type will determine this. Some people, particularly those with sensitive skin, may also experience an adverse reaction to the treatment.
Radiofrequency RF Microneedling
RF microneedling is a cosmetic procedure that uses a combination of radiofrequency (RF) energy and microneedling to reduce acne scars. This non-invasive treatment is an excellent alternative to more invasive procedures such as facelifts or laser resurfacing. During the procedure, a device with tiny needles is used to puncture the skin's surface and deliver RF energy deep into the skin's layers.
This process stimulates collagen production, which leads to tighter and firmer skin over time. RF microneedling offers a variety of benefits, such as diminishing fine lines and wrinkles, enhancing skin texture and tone, reducing pore size, and improving the appearance of scars and stretch marks. It is also a versatile treatment that can be customized to address specific areas of concern on the face and body.
The procedure has minimal downtime and few side effects, making it a safe and effective option for individuals seeking a more youthful and revitalized appearance.
Surgery
Raised acne scars can be removed surgically if other therapies are unsuccessful. A surgeon might advise additional therapy if surgery isn't enough to resolve the issue.
Can scars be completely removed with this treatment?
Scars can frequently be removed with treatment, but they also frequently get lighter over time. The sort and degree of scarring, as well as the patient's skin type, will both have an impact on how well the treatment works. It is important to consider your options thoroughly and discuss your expectations with a dermatologist because treatment can be expensive and time-consuming.
How can acne scarring be avoided?
Scarring or acne cannot always be avoided, but acne sufferers can take precautions to lessen the risk.
These include getting therapy as soon as acne appears and refraining from picking, popping, or otherwise interacting with the condition because doing so increases the risk of infection and scarring.

Advantages of trading blocs
Tumblr media
The dataset we report on here consists of several million orders – with a filled value of €9.5bn- that were placed on the Turquoise Plato Block Discovery TMplatform over a 12-month period in the run up to MiFID 2 from September 2016 to September 2017. We will be publishing an in-depth study of our findings later in the year but here present some preliminary results. So how should we measure the performance/benefits of block trading? LiquidMetrix and Plato Partnership have formed a collaboration to study a large dataset of anonymised block orders (taken from the Turquoise Plato Block Discovery TM platform) and come up with innovative ways of extending traditional TCA to encompass modern block trading. An additional challenge, created by MiFID 2’s more stringent Best Execution rules (RTS 28), will be to measure and quantify the benefits of any use of Blocks. The lead-up to MiFID 2 saw the opening of new block trading venues (CBOE LIS, Euronext Block) as well as significant innovations on existing block platforms such as Turquoise Plato Block Discovery TM, Liquidnet and ITG POSIT.Īssuming block trading does indeed take off during 2018,the first challenge participants will faceis how, when and where to access this new liquidity. It offers the chance of getting large orders filled relatively quickly at a fair price with a ‘neutral’ counterparty. The broad aim of the new regulations seems to be to force smaller orders to execute on lit venues and for ‘dark’ trading to be reserved for larger‘block’ type orders.īlock trading has always been appealing to Buy Side participants. Chief amongst these are the closing of Broker Crossing Networks (BCNs), their partial replacement with Systematic Internalisers and the Double Volume Caps applied to Dark Trading. MiFID 2 has introduced some key structural changes to the equity trading landscape.
