Ted Lasso Costume Deep Dive

I asked if anyone would be interested if I did a deep dive analysis into the Costume Design of Ted Lasso and people seemed to be very interested!

I work as what is called a Stitcher for opera and theatrical costumes which means I am one of the people who sews the costumes you see people wearing on stage. I am not a costume designer and I have never worked in TV. That said, many of the people I work with have worked in TV and I work with costume designers everyday, so I like to think I have a relatively realistic idea of what choices are intentional and what are not. This is my costume design degree put to use.

Part 1: Ted Lasso

Ted has simultaneously the most and least interesting costume design in the show so let’s talk about it and why I am freaking out about Ted’s orange shirt in Sunflowers.

With only very few exceptions here is a list of colors Ted wears:

White

Beige

Grey

Blue (Navy, Light Medium)

IF Ted wears a suit if will be black with a white shirt and a red tie for special occassions or a black tie for funerals

IF Ted is seen in his sleepwear it will be a pair of grey joggers with either a blue shirt, a black “Joe Arthur” T-shirt, or a Kansas City T-Shirt

IF Ted is seen at training or around the club just before or after he will be wearing some combination of (depending on weather):

White or grey polo shirt

Navy Blue Richmond Track Pants

Nav Blue Richmond Track Jacket

Orange Tinted Aviators

White Richmond Visor

On very rare occassions Ted will wear a RED POLO SHIRT. This is outside of Ted’s normal uniform.

The first time we see this shirt in Season 1 Episode 6, Ted is taking off his wedding ring. This immediately establishes that red polo means something is off in Ted’s world, even if it’s something minor. He might wear this shirt more than we actually see in the show but I would think of this as the shirt he wears if he hasn’t had time to do laundry.

Season 2 Episode 2

Ted is dealing with the fact that Dr. Feldstone is staying and the dinamics at the club are changing.

Season 2 Episode 3

Worn as Led Tasso. As though I needed  help proving this meant something was off.

Season 2 Episode 6

When he wears the shirt early in the episode it seems like there is very little going on with him, everything is fine. So why do we get red shirt Ted? and then he gets a panic attack in the middle of a game. That red shirt was the only indication that something was wrong.

Season 3 Episode 5

The Team are in a losing streak following the game with West Ham. He is also wearing it when he finds out about the bullying situation with Henry.

Other exceptions to the rule that I’m not reading too much into, due to them not being quite as noticeable:

Season 2 Episode 5

Ted wears this brownish yellow sweatshirt under his Navy Richmond jacket. I will let this slide because it is mostly covered by the jacket and it is very cold and snowy during this episode.

Season 3 Episode 1

Ted wears a green sweater dropping off his son at the airport. The green doesn’t stand out as much as the red or orange shirt do. I do think this is sort of an indication that we are getting a Ted in season 3 who branches out a little bit more.

Season 3 Episode 3

Ted wears a maroon sweater with a pocket to Sam’s restaurant. Notably, we have seen this sweater in Navy previously. Ted is branching out in colors but only when it is a style he knows he likes. This is also the same style as the orange shirt.

And now SEASON 3 EPISODE 6 he shows up in ORANGE out of nowhere.

and hopefully you understand why I am freaking out enough to do a breakdown of the whole show.

A few things I’d like to note.

The fact that Ted has a reasonably constrained wardrobe doesn’t really surprise me. The way these sorts of shows tend to work is that they will shop for a character’s closet. Even Keeley repeats, if not whole outfits, pieces of them at times. Ted is not the most fashion forward guy, it makes sense that he has a relatively short number of outfits. That said, Coach beard has much more variated style than Ted.

In the episode, what does the Orange shirt tie Ted to?

To me, the most obvious answer to this is actually Colin. Yes, you could argue that he is being tied to to Sunflower painting, maybe to the tea, maybe to the warm colors or the houseboat but if you are going to argue any of those, Colin is being tied to the same thing. I could definitely see both Ted and Colin being tied to the sunflowers. We are definitely meant to compare Ted to Van Gogh in the museum seen. Both are Inspiring creative people who are trying to get past their “inner demons”. Perhaps we are supposed to see that Colin is also one of these people or perhaps it is meant to connect Ted’s journey with Colin’s sexuality storyline. I genuinely don’t know the answer, but Ted’s costume tells me that something is going on.

Costume Break Down Part 3: Revisiting Ted’s Red Shirts

Last week I broke down Ted’s red shirts in my costume break down. Right afterward, the new episode came out and sort of blew up my theory so I am here to redeem myself.

I was so close and yet so far off. Yes, Ted’s Red Polo does indicate something being off but even more so, it indicates CHANGE. This change was easily misread as distress because in the first 2 seasons of the show, change was distressing to Ted.

This makes even more sense for our examples

Season 1 Episode 6- Ted’s marriage ending

Season 2 Episode 2- Dr. Feldstone arrives

Season 2 Episode 3- Led Tasso, needs to change up he coaching strategy

Season 2 Episode 5- this episode is all about change. We start with finding out that Rebecca’s mother walked out on her husband. Then that Beard and Jane got back together. Also Roy has just joined the coaching staff.

Season 3 Episode 5-Richmond is on a losing streak after the West Ham match.

Season 3 Episode 7-Ted introduces the team to total football.

I think this version leaves a lot more room to show Ted’s character development and his ability to deal with big changes by looking at the cause rather than the effect.

The team not communicating about their Halloween costumes AT ALL and all thinking they have a HILARIOUS one of a kind idea to dress up as Roy so all the players start filing in one at a time waiting to see the annoyed look on Roy’s face only to find out that everybody else had the same idea and Roy has to spend the entire night putting up with every single one of them trying to copy his voice and mannerisms and complaining that he sounds and acts nothing like that (which okay is true of Dani’s impression of him but a lot of them are pretty good at it)

Jamie’s impression of him annoys Roy the most and he argues against it the most, but Keeley is absolutely losing her shit laughing and refusing to pretend it isn’t accurate

Is Jamie absolutely exaggerating Roy’s age? Yes. Is he trying to exaggerate Roy’s grouchiness and accidentally landing on almost direct quotes out of him that just make Keeley laugh harder? Absolutely. And he’s been watching Roy’s mannerisms and locking them into his memory to use to make fun of him for years before he ever decided to dress up as him so his performance is the most ridiculously over the top and yet also the most accurate at the same time

Making out in the boot room had to become a fineable act so that Will could at least occasionally attempt to do his job.

We were robbed of a Halloween episode in Ted Lasso. Imagine them training in costumes! It would be so fun!!

For costumes, I feel like Sam would be a wholesome little bumblebee, complete with the little headband with the antennas. Isaac and Colin would be a fun couples costume.

Bumbercatch would come in a highly specific, niche costume that nobody understands but everybody just pretends to know to not hurt his feelings (the entire episode halloween episode would be filled with people trying to understand what it is and at the end it’s incredibly simple)

Jamie would obviously be Roy, and it’s incredibly spot on. Roy would wear the exact same clothes he does everyday but when he’s questioned, he would claim that he’s dressed as a black cat. Beard and Ted would dress up as each other for kicks.

Part 1

Part 2: The Curious Case of the Yellow Shirt

Part 2 was going to be all about Trent and then I was going back thorugh the entire show to get screenshots and I noticed something that I simply cannot explain. The shirt Trent wears in Season 3 Episode 6 is the same one Nora wore to bed in Season 2 Episode 3.

This is one of the most confusing things I’ve ever seen both in and out of universe. First of all, I don’t think I was “supposed” to notice this. Nora is laying on her front during this scene and it was over a season ago.

Behind the scenes I think what happened was just that they had a collection of graphic tees on hand, they grabbed one for Nora’s PJs, it went back into the rotation.

In Universe, here are the ideas I have about why these characters have the same shirt which seems like its for a Catholic School

Nora goes/went to the same school Trent did

Nora goes/went to the same school Trent’s daughter goes to

One or both of these characters bought this shirt from a charity shop

It was actually Rebecca’s shirt and she loaned it to both of the characters

Nora and Trent have a deep off-screen friendship that involves sharing clothes?

Nora is just Phoebe and Trent’s daughter stacked on top of each other in a trenchcoat

Would love to hear whatever other theories you have.

Interesting thing I noticed during “Sunflowers”: Colin, Ted, and Rebecca- the characters with the biggest transformations this episode- were all wearing orange! (Rebecca’s dress was mostly pink or possibly coral, but there were orange flowers in the design.) Not only is orange the color of Richmond’s away kit, it’s also the color most associated with the Dutch. Only appropriate that they are in Amsterdam.

I've said it before but the absolute skill in costuming that goes into every character on Ted Lasso is astounding and needs to be recognised.

Every single character has a personal style not just for work but for play and high fashion events that reflects who they are.

I'm mostly using this as an excuse to rave about Rebecca but that woman's wardrobe!

The sleek fabrics and the structured details! She wears coats like armour and they are fucking stunning! Every one!

She doesn't like a lot of fuss and it shows in how so many of her outfits have no blowsy or frilly details. Everything she wears is unabashedly feminine in a way that stabs you in the face because you cannot look away from this woman.

Every item in her wardrobe looks like it was chosen because she knows it suits her and is a woman with a sense of style.

Also god help me, her game day hats.. I mean please. Have you ever seen anyone look better in a fedora? (Also whats up with the feathers. They are on every hat I'm sure they mean something)
