Day 127: Artstyle challenge

Wanted to challenge myself by drawing teki in the styles of four of my favourite games (and also omori bc it has a pretty iconic style) not all of them are great replicas but I did have fun with it

me and my friends have this crack theory that is so dear to my heart it became an inside joke in the group.

The crack theory is that "shin is a robot" or like moreso a doll in this universe. You might say where did this come from, well one day on a call with a friend we discussed shin death, and then i went, "wait, how the fuck did shin run all that way toward the room of rumbles", i mean we are talking about shin, not qtaro, shin. Shin was probably shot in the arms and leg, and a bullet must've have come close to his head to explain the bleeding. How did shin, the weaket character in the game was SHOT in the limbs and was able to run FASTER THAN SARA towards the room of rumble. Shady right well then he's a robot!

Also i have other proofs, shin in his vision sees himself dead, just like he actually has died just before the death game, in none of the minigame do we see shin bleeding.

also about the fact that shin bleed in his death, reminder that if dolls can sweat, have tears , and other bodily liquid i'm pretty sure they can bleed if you work hard enough. or another option, that wasn't actually blood, they just threw tomato juice on shin.

That's why shin changes eyes color so much their cameras, like led lights that's why it's change every second

what is kagepro? - a quick guide

you may be seeing the word "kagepro" around a whole bunch, especially during august, but what the hell is it?

you may have heard or seen something from kagepro without realizing it! you know that vocaloid song, kagerou daze, about the kids who get hit by a truck and are stuck in a timeloop of saving each other? that's actually one of the songs from kagepro.

kagepro, short for the kagerou project, is a series created by vocaloid composer jin (also known as shizen no teki-p). it's a mixed media series that has music, manga, an anime, movie, a radio talk show, books, etc but i’ll try to keep it simple!

basic premise: people who die on 8/15 are taken to another world called the kagerou daze and if they return to the real world, they will have gained a “snake ability” that will turn their eyes red when used. a group of teens that have these abilities form a little gang but are thrown into an endless timeloop.

THE MEDIA

if you want to get into it, there’s a bunch of different ways you can do it, but do keep in mind: each form of media is NOT just a different adaptation of the story.

kagepro is a timeloop story, and each form of media is actually a different timeline (or “route”). the music videos, the anime, the manga, the books - each one is only a piece of the whole story. that’s why many people may have seen the anime, mekakucity actors, and gotten super confused because the anime is actually one of the last routes haha.

but the order of media that has been generally agreed upon to be the most coherent is music videos -> manga -> light novels -> anime

a lot of kagepro media, esp the light novels and manga, are hard to find since they’re almost entirely out of print, but there’s translations or e-book versions of them available, or if you skip them there’s summaries that people have made. you can also ask me if you want :]

music videos

i’ve actually made a couple playlists for the songs! one is in release order and the other is in story chronological order (mostly).

release order: - i tried to get all the original ia/miku versions of the songs with the original pv if there was one - a couple might be a little out of order since some songs came out together in the same album

this is the order that fans got the music, so if you want to try to figure things out and put things together the way we did you can go with this order!

chronological order: - tried to grab some english covers where i could, but if you don’t like eng covers there are plenty of noneng covers or you can use the videos from the other playlist. there's plenty of really great covers out there! - exceptions to the “chronological”: children record acts as the cover/opening song for the series and summertime record is the ending song for the series - some songs aren’t in here bc they’re not part of the music route (they’re mostly from the newer albums and are kinda like ‘epilogue’ songs after the ending of the anime/good ending or are songs made for the anime)

THE STORY

[a bit of an extra] a very common misconception about the story/mechanics: people do not have to die in pairs or with somebody else on 8/15 to enter the daze. i didn’t realize this myself until super recently

all in all, the kagerou project is a story about finding strength and support from the people around you, moving on to look towards the future, and overcoming trauma.

there’s definitely other people who have also made guides or summaries or videos that are much better and cover much more than i did, but i hope this was a decent introduction!

Kovis ('tough guy') by Käärijä | fin -> eng trans.

Kovis is a word with a mocking undertone, Finns usually use this word while talking about people like immature teenage boys who act tougher than they actually are. The whole song is about dealing with someone who's a difficult and immature person to be around. I decided to translate some bits very literally and add context to some of the words and expressions he uses, mostly because a more liberal english translation alone probably wouldn't fully convey how much he's mocking the person and their juvenile behavior.

Voi hyvä tavaton mietin missä sun käytöstavat on hä -> My goodness, I’m wondering where your manners are, huh

Sä kohtelet muita ku *avanto* niin kylmästi et oon sanaton -> You treat others so coldly it’s like *ice swimming*, it leaves me speechless *(avanto = the actual hole in the ice, but English doesn’t have a word for something that specific. He's basically saying the person is about as pleasant as a swim in ice cold water – when you swim in an avanto the coldness usually shocks your body and it's difficult to talk because of it)

Oot olevinas mikä lie bossman tääl, mut *sun nokka on keltane* -> You act like you’re some kind of a bossman here, but *your beak is yellow* *(he’s saying the person is a 'keltanokka' = a beginner/‘junior', someone who doesn’t know what they’re doing)

Se on pelkkää puppuu ja legendaa ku sulla aukee suu -> When you open your mouth, it's all nonsense and lies

Sun kylien kovan jätkän maine on valheilla maustettuu -> Your tough guy reputation has been seasoned with lies

Teet niin hiton tyhmii juttui että mietin onks sun *pää puut* -> You do things so damn stupid that it makes me wonder if your *head is made of wood* *(puupää = someone who’s dumb, the word's more humorous than offensive despite the meaning)

Ja muut miettii hätäpoistumisteitä kun sä tuut -> And when you come around, the others think about emergency exits

If you call someone's arguments or behavior 'inttäminen' you're basically dismissing their words/behavior while calling them a bit childish)

happy femslash february, here’s a one volume autobiography from 2016. it goes very in-depth with the emotional and logistical considerations of trying to have children as a same-gender couple in japan

some folks might be familiar with them already—this is actually the couple who contacted tokyo disney resort in 2012 about having a wedding ceremony and were told that one of them would have to wear a suit; after public backlash, the couple was able to have their ceremony while both wearing wedding gowns. they were also the first couple to apply for and receive a partnership certificate for same-gender couples from shibuya. so, pretty public figures when it comes to gay rights in japan. they’re very intentional about the information they’re delivering to The General Public

it’s good context for how couples in japan navigate these issues, and it’s interesting how they talk to other same gender parents from the usa. I think it’s a valuable read for anyone who wants more information about mundane experiences and daily life for lgbtq folks in japan.

Media I Experienced In 2023 That I'm Thankful For

It feels crazy to process that another year's effectively gone by already. A lot of people will always say "this year was worse than the last" in the context of a lot of things, and I'm usually one to disagree with that sentiment. This year though, it's been tough for entertainment in general. But that's not what I'm here to talk about, I wanted to share some of my favorite experiences from this year, and look back on the wonderful and impactful media that I've been able to read or watch!

Witch And The Beast - Kousuke Satake

Yes, this is the third volume's cover, I know. I just really love the color choices and style for it.

Anyways, this was one of those series that I'd always see and never pick up. It took some severe pestering from a friend for me to finally pick it up, and it was totally worth it.

I would say it's definitely far from bad right from the start, but I'd also say that once you reach around volume 3, Satake really catches their stride and provides some beautiful work in the volumes leading up to their hiatus. If you want a world all about magic that prioritizes form over function, it's impossible to not recommend The Witch and The Beast and its wonderful appeal.

A Home Far Away - Teki Yatsuda

Yes, this is a one-shot manga, but the grip that it had on me after I read it was so intense. You know how you can tell when a one-shot wants to go past that single volume but can't? This is like the exact opposite. The pacing, themes, characters, all of it is so well structured for a single volume run that you end up with aimless frustration that it can't continue.

The themes of various types of trauma and the idea of searching for a savior in someone else are just so strong alongside the systemic failure in caring for and helping minors. It's just so so strong and painful in how it represents a slow slip into helplessness as they claw at each other to try and unearth their freedom.

Also, definitely read their serialized manga The Yakuza's Bias! Totally different vibe that is just full of absurdity and humor.

Pandora - Hagiwara Rei

Pandora was a very healing manga to read. Beautiful watercolor artwork is donned by each page in the various short stories appearing in this work. Though each is a different person in a different situation, the themes of survivor's guilt, loss, and the hope to be found at the bottom of despair are very strong to feel. If people are looking for a heavy but positive and emotional read, this is certainly a great choice.

Okinawa - Susumu Higa

I don't think it's a secret to say that anti-imperialist Japan manga is seen as "few and far between" in English. We have a lot of impactful and important works that haven't been translated or are currently out of print, so Okinawa came along at a really great time to help drive the point home alongside other experiences like Godzilla Minus One (which is on this list, of course).

Anyways, stepping away from the general act of the war, or the (typical) experiences of it post-war, Okinawa is an incredible read for displaying the interaction and relationships between the Okinawan people and the two separate armies that occupied their space. It does a wonderful job of not painting anyone as inherently evil, but showing the sinister nature of war and the aftereffects that it leaves on a people. Very very worthwhile read that I can't recommend enough.

Until I Love Myself - Poppy Pesuyama

It's only two volumes, it's a manga essay, and it deals with LGBTQ+ content among other things. This is something that was essentially destined to be criminally underread and underappreciated.

What Pesuyama does in exposing their difficult experiences and personal trauma is beyond valuable to people that find themselves in similar positions. The idea of sexism distilled into every aspect of society through the patriarchy, and how that's reflected on someone that doesn't feel comfortable in their own body is almost impossibly poignant. The frustration, the distance, the fear, it takes an incredibly personal experience and without losing even an ounce of that value is able to translate it into something that almost any reader can grasp. An incredibly powerful piece from an equally brave author, it's also an invaluable resource and experience for many out there.

Skip and Loafer - Misaki Takamatsu

I'm a big P.A. Works fan. I've got a lot of their art books, I watch a lot of their series, I just think they do a lot of good work. I also had my reservations about them doing the Skip and Loafer anime, but it was wonderful.

Simply put, it's a modern classic in the slice of life/high school era genre. The characters feel perfectly childish and immature, the direction of the story and its themes are perfectly on the nose. It just has the perfect balance of everything you could hope for. There's not really much to add past that, really. If you like slice of life or high school stuff, you'll love Skip and Loafer. Incredibly refreshing experience.

Heavenly Delusion

I'm a massive fan of the manga, and I was coping insanely hard when I saw that first trailer. I was praying I was in for greatness and wasn't going to get scammed, and Production I.G brought out arguably their best work in the last decade for it.

Mori Hirotaka and the rest of the staff did an absolutely phenomenal work in transforming Heavenly Delusion into an anime. Massive restructures and thematic changes that feel like sheer art within the context of the series. Ishiguro couldn't have done it better himself, and he made that point known on Twitter. Right up there next to Frieren (and even above it depending on the significance of various criteria) for the greatest anime of 2023, and puts itself in contention for one of the best in the 2020s. Absolutely a must watch.

Undead Girl Murder Farce

Mysteries and series that really encourage you to analyze and break them apart are some of my favorites to experience. Include historical context, a penchant for intense showmanship rooted in Japanese culture, and animation and direction that will knock your socks off, and you've got the Dark Horse of the summer season.

Undead Girl Murder Farce had me absolutely hooked from the very first episode, bringing almost SHAFT-like direction and execution that brings out the absolute most in something so fluid. Lapin Track struck gold with this work. Even though they were struggling a little towards the end, they provided and endlessly satisfying and creative experience that had me on the edge of my seat breaking apart every single little frame for meaning and value. An absolute treat for a mystery fan.

Blue Giant

Like many, I discovered Nut (the studio) through Tanya The Evil. Crazy visual effects and ridiculously competent visuals for such a new studio, I was immediately enthralled with their quality.

Not that Blue Giant as a story isn't incredibly good, but that in this context, Nut brought out every last drop of greatness that could have existed in this movie. I'm really struggling to come up with more to say, but it's just so visually stunning that the experience as a whole just feels like a performance on an incredible level. Simply great, I guess I'm forced to say.

The Boy and The Heron

It's Ghibli, it's Miyazaki, need I say more really?

I don't, but I will. I went and saw it twice in theaters so that I could experience both dub and sub for it. Something that people should be 100% experiencing in theaters, and absolutely should be watching multiple times. Miyazaki doesn't tell just one or two stories with this movie, it's so many experiences in his life rolled into one. A love letter to the man behind one of anime's most beloved studios, but also one that leaves lingering feelings of sorrow for some of what Miyazaki instills in it. So yeah, watch it to your heart's content.

Godzilla Minus One

Last, but certainly not least, Godzilla Minus One. I loved it, I knew I'd love it from the moment I laid eyes on the trailer. The idea of Godzilla being presented in North American theaters, to North American viewers, as a direct and destructive of the atomic bomb and its effects on the Japanese population just set something off in me.

North America's view of Godzilla as some sort of anti-hero over the years has weakened the original sentiment that barely existed here in the first place. Minus One sets the record straight in devastating fashion, and adds to the theme in spades. I'd love to explain but I want as many people as possible to experience this without any spoilers, so I'll leave it at being one of the best Godzilla movies bar none.

And that's the list for this year. I think overall it was a "weaker" year, but I'd be more comfortable with calling it a radicalized year. The bad stuff got worse, but the good stuff got better. The best experience of the year were incredibly good because of that, but it overall felt like slimmer pickings than the prior year.

Not that this list couldn't have added any number of entries like Scott Pilgrim, Frieren, Kamonohashi Ron, Bleach TYBW, Gwitch, and so on and so forth. More so that I wanted to keep this list a little more contained. The idea of importance or appreciation begins to lose its value when everything is important or overly appreciated.

Anyways, that's all the past, this post is in the present, and I've got my eyes set on the future with things like the Hokkyoku Department Store movie, Dandadan from Science Saru, Delicious In Dungeon, and plenty, plenty more in 2024!

WHAT HAPPENS IN THE VOLUME?

CONTINUING FROM PREVIOUS VOLUME

U.S.J. ARC (Chap 12-21): Shōto, along with Bakugō and Kirishima, reaches where All Might is and help him fight the Nomu and Kurogiri, Shōto partially freezing the Nomu with a control of his ice (he managed to freeze the Nomu but didn’t freeze All Might despite the latter being close) that positively impress All Might.

He however tells them to keep out of the fight. Shōto though, points out how things would have been troublesome without his help and All Might agrees...

...but then beats up the Nomu, impressing Shōto, who agrees they’re not at ready for the level All Might is fighting at and suggest they’ll go help others. As the other teachers reach the place Shigaraki and Kurogiri leaves. The police witness that Shōto is among the unharmed kids and Shōto discover Hagakure was in his same area so, when he used his ice, he could have frozen her.

U.A. SPORT FESTIVAL ARC (Chap 22-44): The day after classes are cancelled. The day after it, Aizawa is back at school and informs Shōto’s class they’ve to prepare for U.A sport festival. At lunch Shōto overhear Īda and Uraraka saying All Might called Midoriya and Īda pointing out how Midoriya has similar super strength to All Might while Uraraka suggests All Might could have taken a liking to him.

Two weeks after, just before the start of the sport festival, Shōto approaches Midoriya pointing out how he’s stronger and more capable than him. Then he claims All Might got his eyes on Midoriya so he’s going to beat him.

‘Todoroki-kun… Nani?’ 「轟くん…… 何？」 “Todoroki-kun… What is it?”

I didn’t transcribe the whole dialogue but Shōto’s way to talk contrast with Midoriya, who’s much more polite.

For start Midoriya refers to him as ‘Todoroki-kun’ where Shōto goes just for ‘Midoriya’.

Even if we don’t see it here, to say “I” Shōto uses ‘ore’ (おれ/俺), the tough, masculine, kind of rude way to say “I”, while Midoriya uses ‘boku’ (ぼく/僕), which is more humble, and to say “you” Shōto uses ‘omae’ (おまえ/お前) which either expresses the speaker's higher status, or a very casual relationship among peers where Midoriya goes for ‘kimi’ (きみ/君) which is the polite way to say you.

So Shōto is less polite than Midoriya and his words are clearly not nice, however he’s not super rude either. This will change later so I thought to point it out here.

Kaminari is impressed by how ‘the strongest of the class’ (aka Shōto) made a declaration of war to Midoriya and when Kirishima tells Shōto he shouldn’t pick a fight now, Shōto replies it’s okay since they aren’t pretending to be friends, here.

‘Nakayoshi-gokko janēnda nandatte iitaro’ 「仲良しごっこじゃねえんだ何だって良いたろ」 “That’s not like we are playing close friends, so it’s okay.” [Chap 23]

Midoriya agrees Shōto is stronger but claims he won’t fall behind.

The first event at the sport festival at which Shōto takes place is the "Obstacle Course Race" (障害物競争 'Shōgai Butsu Kyōsō'). Shōto freezes the legs of the one next and ahead of him and becomes the "leader" (先頭 'Sentō'). He then faces the robots which were used during the entrance exam, freezing them so that they won’t be able to move and he’ll manage to get through… but he froze them in such an unstable position they’ll fall on whoever else will try to pass. Shōto still comments he wished U.A. had prepared something better as his "shitty old man" (クソ親父 'KUSO Oyaji'), aka Todoroki Enji, is watching.

Shōto, keeping the lead, then easily passes the second barrier, tailed by Bakugō, whom he notices is all fired up and wonders if Bakugō is a slow starter. Meanwhile the public is impressed by Shōto due to his Quirk and to how he’s athletic and perceptive. When they realize he’s the son of Hero Number Two, Endeavor (aka Enji) they find normal he’s so strong and assume the Pro will fight to have him as their sidekick.

Once Shōto reaches the minefield he understands it’s an obstacle made to put in disadvantage who’s leading. At the same time Bakugō reaches him, claiming he made his war declaration to the wrong guy, surpassing Shōto. The two fight for first place when Midoriya surpasses them. In order to get first place again, Shōto makes an ice path, aware it’ll help the others too, suspending his battle with Bakugō so that they both can chase after Midoriya who however manages to keep the lead and get first place in the race while Shōto is second.

All in all Shōto keeps on being fleshed out more and more, so that we get how an awesome aspiring Hero he is in terms of abilities and in terms of Quirk power but also of ability to judge situations… but we also view also how cold and competitive he can be, as well as how he is aware of his own abilities. Plus we are introduced to how he’s the son of Number Two, Endeavor, but also it’s hinted how it doesn’t seem there’s good blood between him and his father.

teki tsutone is a social media influencer who primarily participate on sites like twitch since she is well know as a cute e-girl. She plays cute cozy games, cosplays a lot and as a very promising music career as a pop singer online. She is considered as wife material a cute, uwu pretty girl online who has a legion of weird stans. but in reality she is very different from that preppy bubbly personality, she is way more closeted and actually doesnt' really like talking to people irl, she is way more focused on her music. She has created a persona of herself online which is way different from reality. She is actually kinda mean spirited, prefers rock music, prefers playing violent games, is actually a very smart woman, and kinda hate the fact that she is considered a ""conformt streamer"". She uses alternate accounts to tell her truth and be a petty bitch online being the true her who is a bit arrogant a bit mean spirited and has a raunchy sense of humor. Also no she is not a blonde. Just before the death game multiples allegation started spilling out to the world that teki doesn't actually like her audience is is a total fraud. So now when she walks out she has to take cover from posssible persons coming to ask her questions. So yeah she pretty much is a hustler. In reality she would really wish to be her true self on camera, but being a egirl pays way more. But on day all that pressure online starts getting to her and she decides to go to ab bar to drink a little, at that bar she realises, no i'm not gonna live my life pretending to be somebody i'm not, im opening my stream and finally being me! .... And then she walks outside in the dark gets kidnapped in the death game and dies at the first trial!
