On Tuesday, New Hampshire attorney general John Formella said that a Texas-based telecom company was behind the reportedly AI-generated robocalls impersonating President Joe Biden that went out ahead of the state’s presidential primary last month.
At a press conference on Tuesday, Formella announced that he had identified Life Corporation and its owner, Walter Monk, as the source behind the thousands of calls and that his office issued a cease-and-desist letter to the company and had opened a criminal investigation into the matter. The Federal Communications Commission sent its own cease-and-desist letters to Life Corporation, as well as another Texas company, Lingo Telecom, the alleged voice service provider of the calls.
“Ensuring public confidence in the electoral process is vital,” Formella said at the Tuesday press conference. “We're providing this update and information today to assure the public that we take this seriously and that this is one of our most important priorities. We are also providing this update and information to send a strong message of deterrence to any person or entity who would attempt to undermine our elections through AI or other means.”
Formella said that anywhere from 5,000 to 25,000 of these robocalls were placed ahead of the New Hampshire primary that mimicked Biden and discouraged voters from voting. “Your vote makes a difference in November, not this Tuesday,” the robocall said.
In January, WIRED reported that two teams of researchers had determined that the call was created with voice-cloning software from the AI startup Eleven Labs. The company declined to take responsibility for the Biden clone, telling WIRED that it was “dedicated to preventing the misuse of audio AI tools.”
Last week, the FCC put out a new proposal to ban robocalls that use AI-generated voices by updating the Telephone Consumer Protection Act, a 1991 law that regulates telemarketers. The FCC has used the TCPA in the past to go after junk callers, including conservative activists Jacob Wohl and Jack Burkman. In 2021, the FCC fined the pair more than $5 million for violating the law after they placed calls threatening to release the personal information of voters if they voted by mail in the 2020 election.
“Consumers deserve to know that the person on the other end of the line is exactly who they claim to be,” FCC chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel said in a statement on Tuesday.

Alexandre de Moraes, a Brazilian Supreme Court justice, ordered Brazil’s telecom agency to block access to X across the nation of 200 million because the company lacked a physical presence in Brazil.
Mr. Musk closed X’s office in Brazil last week after Justice Moraes threatened arrests for ignoring his orders to remove X accounts that he said broke Brazilian laws.
X said that it viewed Justice Moraes’s sealed orders as illegal and that it planned to publish them. “Free speech is the bedrock of democracy and an unelected pseudo-judge in Brazil is destroying it for political purposes,” Mr. Musk said on Friday.
In a highly unusual move, Justice Moraes also said that any person in Brazil who tried to still use X via common privacy software called a virtual private network, or VPN, could be fined nearly $9,000 a day.

A major tech business media outlet's lead article in its email newsletter was about how "people don't want to pay for content," and that this is "upending the decades-old model" in Hollywood.
It is 2024. The tech business still doesn't know or understand media business, continues to refer to it as "content," and continues to try to lead and talk about it when it has no experience or understanding of it.
Here is the reality of the media business: Some media is premium, that gives the audience access or information the audience can't get itself, because it costs money to do so. The media outlet pays this cost for the access/information itself, then shares it for a fraction of the cost with the audience, which is the consumer. This model works when access/information is harder to get and more in demand. It is very basic business basic here.
Now, some media is not premium. This is less expensive, easier to get access to, and is not as in demand. This is the free and low-cost media. In the media business, which is not new and is actually older, much larger and much more powerful than tech industry even today, it would be things like local media and public broadcasting.
Many media outlets over time (centuries) have offered a combination of these two models, which is called a hybrid model. This is what the tech industry calls, "freemium," but it isn't new to media business.
"Media," for reference is, broadcast/cable television, print/digital media (newspapers, magazines, blogs, online media), and traditional/digital radio (aka, podcast). "Content" is what software developers refer the information/images, etc. that goes onto the software they create. Websites and apps are software.
The media and content business are two separate, different things, with different, separate business models, mechanisms, truisms, customers, etc. They aren't able to be considered the same, given this. The same applies with the software business, including internet.
The above two models - premium and not premium - are a second business basic that has existed since the dawn of the media business, now centuries ago, entirely driven by media business' customers, consumers, who understand that things that cost money to make aren't free. The tech business insists/has insisted otherwise for more than a decade, because the tech business only knows the software business model, which is not at all like the media -- or even the content -- business model. It should not be attempted to try to force these two totally different models into one, just because it might involve technology or the internet.
The internet is an infrastructure, not a website, app, etc. It (the internet) was not created by the tech business, but the telecom business and the U.S. government, as an information distribution and communications platform, with commerce functionality. The tech business is in the picture because it created/creates the software that sits on the internet and the devices that enable access to the internet, because it is software and devices is the tech industry's business/business model.
Given all of this, there won't be any "disruption" and "demise" of the media business, because it and its parent companies, etc., own far, far more in the world than tech business, and this hasn't and won't change for many reasons, most of which is companies that own media outlets also own the infrastructure which is telecom not tech.
The tech industry doesn't recognize that everything besides itself isn't a "dinosaur," especially media business. Media business is much more like a tardigrade, which has survived all centuries, mass destructions, and extinctions to date, for over 500 years. Media business is not content, content is new, only since the advent of the software/tech business, including the internet (roughly 75 years).
Tech/business may not understand this, but it doesn't change that it's a basic media, tech and content business/industry truism. Anything that says otherwise is a skip.

Global cyber outage grounds flights, hits banks, telecoms, media July 19 (Reuters) - A global tech outage was disrupting operations in multiple industries on Friday, with airlines halting flights, some broadcasters off-air and everything from banking to healthcare hit by system problems. American Airlines AAL.O, Delta Airlines DAL.N, United Airlines UAL.O and Allegiant Air ALGT.O grounded flights citing communication problems. The order came shortly after MicrosoftMSFT.O said it resolved its cloud services outage that impacted several low-cost carriers, though it was not immediately clear whether those were related. "A third party software outage is impacting computer systems worldwide, including at United. While we work to restore those systems, we are holding all aircraft at their departure airports," United said in a statement. "Flights already airborne are continuing to their destinations." Australia's government said outages suffered by media, banks and telecoms companies there appeared to be linked to an issue at global cybersecurity firm Crowdstrike CRWD.O. According to an alert sent by Crowdstrike to its clients and reviewed by Reuters, the company’s “Falcon Sensor” software is causing Microsoft Windows to crash and display a blue screen, known informally as the “Blue Screen of Death”. The alert, which was sent at 0530 GMT on Friday, also shared a manual workaround to rectify the issue. A Crowdstrike spokesperson did not respond to emails or calls requesting comment.
