This is the behind the scenes work-in-progress overview for fight / flight part 4! (part of the YYH North Bound prequel project)

I finally got around to scanning the thumbnails for this part! I remembered to do this mainly because part 5 (which is also the final part of this story in the North Bound series!) will be posted here soon.

Because it's been so long since I worked on part 4, I don't have as much to say compared to previous behind the scenes posts. Basically time heals all wounds (or at least these ones) and thus I forgot all the details of my screaming/crying/complaining, hahaha. That and possibly because this part was "only" 6 pages.

For part 4, I had designed a new character who didn't already exist in Yu Yu Hakusho.    

The second drawing above (with the Chinese characters, just my calligraphy practice on the same page) was actually from pretty far back, I was thinking about her (and her dialogue) for a while. You can see I was playing a lot with the design of her face, how old she might look, and how I might distinguish her from other female characters and Spirit World guides, especially with the stylizing of her eyes. 

Outfit-wise I don't think she's that unique as far as classical sky maiden-type designs go, but I do enjoy drawing her hair. I gave her a beauty mark at the last second while inking the comic.

Here are all of the page sketches - without the text, followed by more commentary.

Comparing my thumbnails to my sketches, there wasn't much change.

The "Otake, stand down" tennyo descending page got adjusted a bit with a close up of her lips for her dialogue. I still feel a bit ambivalent about the composition, whether I should have positioned her higher, but I like the feeling of descent and the fluttering of her hagoromo.

Second last page, second panel after Otake says "hmph" - I took so long working on this that the doodle in my page sketch was undecipherable to me, and I was at a complete loss as to what on earth I had been intending. Fortunately, my script at this part said "sheathes his sword" which saved me. Though, if I had bothered going back to look at my thumbnails, I would have realized my thumbnail of this action was ten times clearer than my page sketch.

Other comments:

First page, large panel with the sparkle of the tennyo appearing - I had a heck of a time with the forest background on this one. Blob blob blob it seems serviceable enough. Like I've said before, my environments are mostly rough vibes, haha.

"EUGH YUCK GROSS" page - I had a lot of fun with the tennyo's expressions, and I really like how Otake's face turned out in the last panel. Drawing annoyed people with bloody faces is fun!

Last two pages: I was very proud of how Tomoe turned out on these two pages, her looking up poses. I also was pleased with the forest in the last panel. More vibes!

A communion of florals and avians, of pine trees and mountanous landscapes, are all set upon silk brocade meant to adorn her form later. Finery selected by her father, who above all in public, wishes for his daughter to be the personification of art. as a means to reflect her demeanor. Or rather, embellish it.

But in her private moments, as she ambled away from scrutinizing glances made her way, she gave her attention and care to robes that were old-fashioned in make, lacking in the uniqueness that perhaps most were accustomed to.

Today, as morning light breaks through the gloam, and spirits tuck themselves away into the far recesses of the world, she favors a roseate kimono of no distinct design. Wearing it allows her to relive a fading memory of days long gone, when money mattered little and the humble belongings of her family as all she knew.

Her mother wore garments such as the one she was adorned in now based on what she could scrape from memory. Kikyo had not known her as her father elaborately embellished in his stories: clothed with raiments that were resplendent, like the stars, enough to rival the argenteous beams of moonlight.

Though she would have loved to see her the way her father once witnessed her upon their courtship, she found her beauty did not dull because of her demure attire, instead it shone exquisitely because of it.

I just stumbled upon this and wanted to do it for funsies. I mainly write Sess/Kag under the pseud Tsuki no Tennyo, but I haven't written anything in like 1½ year on account of my house was destroyed by a fire and I had to deal with insurance bs for one full year lmao (hello yes, I did not abandon my stories, but the Universe had abandoned me 🥲)

Also, uh, this is just some of my "interested" wips. I didn't include "active" wips on account of I want them to be surprises. Also didn't include abandoned wips on account of I'm not active in those fandoms anymore for whatever reason.

Renge is likely not aware that her biological mother was not as angelic as she thinks. In an inversed version of the Hagoromo folktale, Yumi was the one who trapped her father into a relationship ( despite how it was initially a mutual agreement between the two ) by baby-trapping him TWICE && could be considered hauntingly possessive over him. It was complicated, but Renge's father fell out of love with her after realising that it's impossible for them to truly be together ( mortal-immortal relationship woes ) && in return, she simply 'died' by ceasing to exist, where it could be considered that she committed suicide. Renge doesn't know about this, for sure -- she's only aware that her mother is simply missing from her life since she was young, right after her younger sister was born. Ultimately I don't think her mother truly cares for them -- she was more obsessed with the idea of being in a relationship with her father than caring for her own children. They are simply a tool for her to trap her beloved into a relationship, sadly. So when he declared that he doesn't love her anymore, she lost her entire will to live.
