The doctor peeked her head out of the Tardis, “Yes!” She cheered. “We’re here, fam!” She grinned, straightening her coat before stepping out on to the alien planet. You followed closely behind her, followed by Yaz, Ryan and a rather reluctant Graham. The planet itself was beautiful on first glance, covered in lush green grass as far as the eye could see, along with some.... peculiar-looking pink fluffy trees.

The doctor sneaked her hand into yours with a triumphant smirk before turning to the rest of the gang. “Welcome to Ucarro!” She chatted as she walked briskly towards what seemed to be the city centre. ”It's a lovely little planet-”

Yaz interrupted, ”One that we can’t get into much trouble on?”

The doctor furrowed her brow, letting out a sigh. ”I’ve apologised profusely for the alien dogs, Yaz! We’re here for the annual Tenov festival!”

Ryan and Graham shared confused glances at one another. ”Tenov festival?”

”Yes!” she replied. ”Think... Thanksgiving but on an alien planet.” she beams at you again, crinkling her nose in excitement. ”It’s gonna be so much FUN, Y/N!” You smile back at the blonde, gently squeezing her hand. ”Where to first? Oh! They have roller coasters or food stands or little fun games!” The doctor was practically jumping with excitement now, dragging you along her as she led the fam into the crowded town centre. You were surrounded by aliens of all kinds of different species, some more human-looking than others. There were tentacles, hooves, antlers just flying about everywhere, the crowd of “people” were overwhelmingly loud, making you cringe lightly and crinkle your nose in frustration as you walk.

You hum nervously, tightening your grip on The Doctor‘s hand so you don't get separated from her, she probably wouldn't even notice if you slip out into the crowd, she’s WAY too excited to care about anything else at the moment.

”Oh my days.” Ryan gawked at the huge rollercoaster in the distance before turning to Yaz and Graham. ”You guys up for it? Look at the size of that thing!” Graham shook his head almost profusely, crossing his arms whilst Yaz squealed. ”Yes! We should go before the line gets too long!” the two disappeared from the group, followed by a sullen-looking Graham, who was obviously on the hunt for a food stall nearby.

The Doctor kept dragging you through the colourful crowd, smiling and blubbering about the planet, the species and of course the festival you were attending. She hadn’t even realised the others had broken away from you both, so she kept speeding through the massive crowd, stopping to look at the occasional stall. You were getting... rather overwhelmed by this point, you’d never done well with crowds, nevermind a crowd full of aliens on some planet no one has heard of. You stuck close to the doctor, practically joined to her arm. People were pushing past you, brushing past you in a careless but painfully tyrannical way as you tried to keep up with The Doctor. Your hands started shaking as you cling on to her, but she was blissfully unaware of your now panicked state.

“Ooh! Look Y/N, pancakes! Well, I think they’re pancakes, they look like pancakes don’t they? We should go over there! Oh! Or we can play some games, or go on some rides or-“ She grinned back at you before her face dropped.

“Oh.” She furrowed her brow, looking down at your shaky hands before back up at you, her eyes darted across your trembling lip and watery eyes, making her freeze. “Oh! Are you, are you okay?” You started bawling, crumbling under her gaze as you clung on to her arm as tight as possible. “Crowds.” You managed to choke out between cries. “I can’t do it-“

The doctor nodded quickly and pried her arm from you, sneaking it around your waist. “Okay, okay I’ve got you yeah? Let’s go back to the Tardis for a bit okay?” She leaned her forehead on yours as you trembled under her, tears streaming from your eyes. “Mhm.”

She held you close to her, pushing through the crowd of “people” recklessly, barging everyone out the way as an incredible speed before guiding you into the Tardis. “Sit.” She smiled reassuringly and gently kissed the top of your head, insisting you take a cup of tea for “hydration”. She sat down next to you, wrapping her arms around you and letting you place your head on her shoulder. The doctor hummed gently, wiping the tears from your cheeks with her thumbs. “I’ve got you, you’re alright love. See? It’s only me, you and the lovely tardis here.” You chuckled through tiny whimpers, nuzzling your head against her. ”What about the others?” you reply, fiddling with the hem of her coat. ”Eh... I’ll let them know we’re here in a bit, they’ll want to go on some rides.” she mumbled into your hair a quiet. ”I'm sorry.”

”Oh don’t be silly-”

”No.” She interrupted. ”I should have known, I was being selfish.” she frowned, kissing your head again.

”No it's fine, honestly. You couldn't have known.” you look up at her again, pouting. She grinned down at you now, cupping your face with her slender hands. ”If you're uncomfortable with absolutely anything we do on these little missions, you have to tell me, Y/N.” she strokes your cheeks with her fingers, admiring you.

”I promise.” you poke your tongue out at her.

Week 5: Digital Citizenship 1: Political Engagement

Social media has been influencing the political landscape. The era of social media allows politicians to use various social media platforms to campaign and communicate to a large audience.    

Politicians use social media to reach out to their audience for a variety of reasons. 

According to Aishat, Norsiah & Mohd (2017), social media encouraged youths to participate and it also allows politicians to get the message to their voters more easily. This has led political campaigns to publish ads and commercials for free on YouTube; allowing them to get the message through at zero cost. Moreover, viewers can share campaign material or news to one another easily which could go viral. Finally, by using social media, political campaigns can analyse viewer’s information as a way of connecting with the audience (Murse 2019). 

However, a downside of using social media in politics is that there are many fake news that seem to be real and often, many people believe them (Hull 2017). 

During the GE14 election in Malaysia, social media encouraged many young voters to participate and be updated. It also allowed people to learn about the activities of both political parties. Furthermore, hashtags like #PulangMengundi  encouraged people to return home to vote, and platforms like Facebook and Youtube allowed Malaysians from around the world to view the rallies (Lim 2018). My relatives abroad have actively used social media to check up on the latest election news. 

Political memes

Social media has made it easier for people to create political memes. Memes trigger reactions from people and are a new genre of political communication (Tenove 2019). According to Gubbay (2018), memes attract the younger generation to be involved in politics and politicians have even started to create their own memes to target younger audiences. However, these memes could create cynicism and increase mistrust in government.

Social movements in politics 

Social movements matter as they can influence politics; however this can differ depending on how democratic a state is. According to Amenta et.al. (2010), the main potential political consequences of movements are the extension of democratic rights and practices and the formation of new political parties. On the other hand, there are some countries like Turkey with authoritarian regimes which led to protests like the Gezi Park protests’ where protestors got shot (Letsch 2014). 

Hence, for countries exercising freedom of speech in their democracy; social movements could be a part of politics, and in some countries, not. In my opinion, there has to be a balance in the politicization of social movements. While some movements could expose flaws in the political system, some movements could cause their own problems. For example, movements should be politicized if it exposes the flaws of the political systems and benefits the nation as a whole. The Arab Springs movement presented the dictatorship, unemployment and corruption across the Middle East (Social movements that have changed the world 2014). 

On the other hand, there are arguments that movements like #MeToo have been politically hijacked and weaponized until the point where it’s dividing both genders making it a weak political strategy (Sheffield 2018).

The (un)appeal of meme campaigns

At this point in time, most people with internet access should be acquainted with memes. They are visual media that communicate ideas through snappy text superimposed to images, usually considered funny (Kulkarni, 2017). In the overall democratizing context of the internet, memes are not only a platform for people of all backgrounds to express their viewpoint, but they also create communities based on the level of meme literacy of the members (Nissenbaum, Shifman, 2017). In online political discourses, memes have become a popular tool to disseminate opinions and information, from many points of view, even extremist or marginal ones (Nissenbaum, Shifman, 2017). In politics, humour and satire are nothing new. Depending on the context, they can either be a coping mechanism (Kulkarni, 2017), or a way to discredit the opposing faction in a way that denotes superiority and wit (Pearce, Hajizada, 2014). However, especially after Russia’s interference with the US presidential election in 2016 through an influx of partisan memes, recent times have seen a rise in a different trend: politicians using memes as part of their campaign strategy (Flynn, 2019).

At first glance, this can be explained by the mass-appeal of memes – they act as an efficient tool to engage audiences who don’t have an explicit interest in politics (Pearce, Hajizada, 2014). Memes also help in connecting with younger demographics (Tenove, 2019) and their viral nature and cheap production value result in fruitful advertisement (Murse, 2019).

Despite the positives, internet natives seem to resist their allure. With the exception of a few successful examples, such as Obama’s integration of memes in his campaign strategy in 2012 (Rochelle, 2019), the co-option of memes has come across as distasteful and disingenuous. An infamous example of unsuccessful use of memes in political discourse is Hillary Clinton’s tone-deaf tweet “How does your student loan make you feel? Tell us in in 3 emojis or less.” (2015) or her attempt at appealing to the youth by appropriating Pokemon Go in-game culture when posting the following meme with the caption “Pokemon Go to the polls.” (2016):

[Image 3] However, memes have been sneaking into political discourse for a while now, but when they’re posted by regular internet users, they don’t seem to attract the same amount of scrutiny.

Building on Bordieu’s concept of cultural capital (1993), Nissenbaum and Shifman (2017) explain that memes have become identifiers of a shared culture on the internet. The group decides and constructs their own jargon and image lexicon. Thus, meme literacy becomes a way of gatekeeping, and wrong use signals impostors (Nissenbaum, Shifman, 2017). From this perspective, it becomes clear why there is distaste towards the co-opting of memes by politicians: as seen in the Hillary Clinton example, their context, design, and language are foreign to the general meme culture, and also incongruous with her image, whereas in Obama’s case, his overall public persona matches the way his campaign integrated memes.

Therefore, in the highly solidified digital subcultures, trying to relate and appeal to their members as an outsider, especially one with ulterior motives, can backfire, shifting the lens from the politicians’ memes to the politicians as memes.

So why do politicians utilize social media? When it comes to political voting, engagement with young voters plays a significant role. In 2020, the American election broke the record with 159.7 million voters, and Biden won many young votes, 65% age 18-24, 54% age 25-29, and 51% age 30-39 (Hess 2020). Based on studies, the primary demographic of social media stood by young people, 84% aged 18-29 and 81% aged 30-49 (Auxier & Anderson 2021). Therefore, showing the importance of implementing social media in political engagement to gain young adults' votes.

According to Sahly, Shao, and Kwon (2019, p. 8), social media is a strategy tool in political campaigns. It provides direct control in building relationships with the voter without relying on third-party media such as traditional news media (Sahly, Shao & Kwon 2019, p. 8). With horizontal information flow tactics, social media provides two-way communication between the politicians and the users. Additionally, as the social media platform offers data analysis of the users' interactions, politicians can better identify and comprehend popular topics users discuss. Henceforth, the two-way communication and data analysis information allows the politicians to adequately align their response and discussion of policy proposals and immediately address political discontent (Zhuravskaya, Petrova & Enikolopov 2020, p. 417). In Barack Obama's second presidential campaign, Obama used several social media platforms to have two-way communication interactions with the users. For example, Obama conducted questions and answers sessions on Twitter and the 'Ask Me Anything' on Reddit (Contentgroup c. 2020). The implication of hashtags is a method for sparking mass political conversation too. An examplar, former President Donald Trump's campaign titled "Make America Great Again," was written by Trump often on Twitter (Earl 2016). Today, it remains to create a massive topic discussion by Twitter users using the #MakeAmericaGreatAgain (Twitter c. 2021).

However, there is a downside of politics on social media. As social media platform relies on user-generated content, the barries to entry as a user are low. Furthermore, with users' ability to reshare, report, and copy content produced by others, it's challenging for politicians to cover potentially damaging information. As social media provides sharing at unprecedented speed, misinformation or fake news may arise. Thus, negatively impacting political reputation (Zhuravskaya, Petrova & Enikolopov 2020, pp. 416-417).

Consequently, low restrictions on users' content sharing produce political memes and video parodies. The political meme is visually designed to trigger an emotional reaction to inside political jokes and shared across social media (Tenove 2019). Although political memes and video parodies act as attraction, persuasion, and bemuse strategies for votes, they also raise concerns about boundaries, privacy, and respectfulness. For instance, impersonating politicians made mislead the politicians' personalities and voters' impression.
