Brazil Floods Devastate Hog Farms in Rio Grande do Sul, Affecting Major Pork Exporters

Hog farmers in Rio Grande do Sul, a state responsible for nearly a quarter of Brazil’s pork exports, suffered devastating losses as floods submerged entire towns and destroyed critical infrastructure. According to a Reuters report, an estimated 12,600 hogs perished due to the flooding.

Valdecir Folador, head of the hog producers’ lobby ACSURS, stated in an interview on Monday that around 30 farms were impacted by the flooding. These farms include those operated by suppliers to major companies such as BRF SA and JBS SA’s Seara processed foods division. ACSURS took two weeks to estimate the extent of the losses.

While the companies have not yet commented on the situation, Folador highlighted the significant role of Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil’s pork industry. The state accounts for 24.24% of the country’s pork exports, according to data from the national industry lobby ABPA, which represents the largest pork and chicken processors in Brazil.

The port of Rio Grande, responsible for shipping nearly 9% of Brazil’s pork exports, was also disrupted by floods and landslides. These natural disasters blocked roads and affected a rail link to the port’s terminals, further complicating the export process.

Although Israeli approval has finally been obtained for the sale of the F-35 to the United Arab Emirates, speculations are arising about a possible Chinese choice by the United Arab Emirates, despite restrictions on the export of the J-20. The head of joint operations of the UAE Armed Forces went to Beijing at the end of April to meet with the commander of the Chinese Air Force, a meeting that symbolizes a rapprochement between the two nations that could suggest a future collaboration in the field of military aviation.

The United Arab Emirates Air Force traditionally has two types of aircraft, so far they are the F-16 sold by the US and the Mirage 2000-9 from Dassault. While the 67 Mirage 2000 jets will be replaced by the 80 standard F4 Rafale of a contract signed in 2021, the issue of the succession of the F-16 remains uncertain.

In November 2020, the Trump administration approved the sale of 50 F-35 stealth fighters to the Emirates, for an amount of 23 billion dollars. This decision comes after the signing, on August 13, 2020, of a standardization agreement between Israel and the United Arab Emirates, followed by the recognition of the Hebrew state by the latter in September. And although the media of the time rejoiced a future regional peace, the desire of the Emirates to acquire the American F-35 stealth fighter will initially compromise the normalization of relations with Israel, which is firmly opposed to the sale of the device to the Emirates, citing the policy of "qualitative military advantage" from which it benefits.

This policy, initiated by the United States in the 1960s, aims to ensure that Israel has the most advanced military means to maintain its regional superiority, so the sale was frozen by the Biden administration in 2021. Several reasons for this: Israel in the first place, but also the conditions imposed by Washington on human rights records and, finally, China, whose approach to the Emirates is viewed unfavorably by Washington. The United States is particularly concerned about the fact that China uses Huawei's 5G technology to spy on the capabilities of the F-35, while the Emirates refused to terminate the contract with the technology giant. Last but not least, the UAE are co-financing the development of the Russian Su-75 Checkmate fighter, derived from Su-57.

Despite the abundance of petrodollars, the Emirates are struggling to reach the F-35 and, in turn, have threatened to cancel the contract. Pushed into the arms of other potential military suppliers, the Emirates' option for the J-20 then seems plausible.

Emirates/China Approach

Economically, the United Arab Emirates is the largest export market of the United States in the Middle East and North Africa. More than 1,000 American companies operate in the country and many others use it as a regional headquarters to conduct business throughout the Middle East, North Africa region and parts of Asia. The fact that the Emirates are approaching China is therefore not anecdotal. As The Hill reported last year, “the fabric of America's strategic ties with the Gulf region is tearing apart,” and it seems that the situation is only getting worse. If China is the largest non-oil trading partner of the United Arab Emirates worldwide, it is in the military domain that relations are evolving the most.

In 2021, American intelligence services discovered the existence of a Chinese military facility in a port in the United Arab Emirates. The Emirates agreed to end the project at the request of the United States, but construction would have resumed at the end of 2022. The Emirates also participated in the joint exercise "Falcon Shield 2023", with its F-16 block 60 and Mirage 2000-9 aircraft, offering several opportunities for China to learn about Western equipment.

The recent meeting between General Saleh Mohammed bin Majren Al Ameri and Lieutenant General Chang Dingqiu of the Chinese Air Force illustrates this rapprochement between the two countries. Interestingly, the photos shared by the Ministry of Defense of the United Arab Emirates after the visit to China show a painting with two J-20 Mighty Dragon fighters, the real stars of this meeting.

The recent acquisition by the United Arab Emirates of the Chinese Hongdu L-15A Falcon jet coaches and speculations around the potential interest in the Chengdu J-20 stealth fighter will go in the direction of rapprochement between the Emirates and China, especially since the UAE has renounced any partnership with Russia in the field of aviation after the poor performance of Moscow fighters in Ukraine.

The obstacles encountered in the acquisition of American F-35 fighters, despite the close ties between the two countries, led the Emirates to seriously consider other alternatives, including the Chinese J-20. Ironic when we know that the United States accuses China of having manufactured the J-20 using American technologies, acquired through espionage.

At the moment, it is still too early to say whether the United Arab Emirates will end up acquiring the J-20 from China, given that this type of aircraft would be difficult to integrate with other means within its military power and that China does not seem to have the ambition to export it (favoring the FC-31). In addition, negotiations with China could also be a way for the Emirates to put pressure on the United States, due to the blocked F-35 agreement. For now, the sale agreement remains viable according to Daniel Mouton, a former employee of the United States National Security Council.

However, considering the regional crisis and other geopolitical reasons, the Arab countries represent a good market opportunity for China, which already maintains friendly relations with many of them and intends to become the main supplier of combat aircraft and drones in the Middle East. Unless the U.S. allows an increase in UAE power as a frontline army in the face of the Iranian regional threat, a threat shared by all states in the region, whether or not they recognize the State of Iran.

When she excuses herself a few minutes later to go to the toilet, Ollivan rounds on Lev and points a spoon at him. “Let me see who you’re going to set her up with.” Lev scoffs. “That’s cheating,” he says. “You’ll go home and stalk him and then threaten him in your big scary gangster voice saying you’ll break his legs if he hurts your sister, not that he even knows who she is yet, and then Cassia will think it’s my fault when she finally tells me she’s ready to find love and I have to let her know that her future soulmate just got found in the Thames with concrete blocks tied around his feet.”

This morning, I was dreading work and had two voices in my mind.

The familiar pessimist - the negative, scared, shy voice I’ve always had; and a new, bubbly, reasonable voice of hope who’s been manifesting through my therapy journey.

“I’m running late and there will be so many techs waiting for things and there’s so much to do today. We just woke up and I’m already overwhelmed,” Pessimism drawls, “can we hide away today?”

“No it’ll be great, our work friends are there and we’ll take things a step at a time! Let’s go anyway!” Hope retorted with compassion.

Pessimism: “…”

Hope: *puts arm around Pessimism*

Pessimism: “I really don’t think I can do this.”

Hope comforted Pessimism: “I’ll be here with you. Trust me, we can do this.”

And so my little flame of hope won out and I went into work.

I got the weekend paperwork dealt with from when my coworker did Saturday freight and then helped that same coworker find some parts for one of our techs. Things felt like a normal, groggy Monday morning.

“We’re doing it!” Said Hope. “Things aren’t so bad!”

On my way back to my desk, my manager asked me to see him upstairs. I finished what I was doing and headed up.

Pessimism: “we’re getting written up for being late!”

Hope: “no it might just be a quick one-on-one to check up.”

Pessimism: “no I really don’t think it could be that easy. We told our lead that we struggle with early mornings but they changed our shift anyway. Management doesn’t believe us. We’re not ‘holding up our end of the bargain’ and they’re upset.”

Hope replies “well let’s just see. Whatever it is, we can’t shy away. Hold a neutral expression and we’ll process whatever comes as best we can.”

I opened the door and my manager was surprised I came up so soon. He jumped right in and said they’re terminating my employment effective immediately. He probably would’ve softened it if I didn’t catch him off guard. But it hit like a truck. I held my neutral expression.

“I fucking knew it” slammed Pessimism. “I saw this shit coming this morning.”

Hope stayed quiet. There was no hope as my work life fell apart in front of me.

My manager turned his laptop to reveal another member of management on screen. She talked me through stuff, which I can’t remember now, before mentioning my manager would escort me out of the building.

And so he did. I handed my company things in and we shook hands outside the door.

I drove away and realized I still had one key left on my personal key ring so I circled the block and handed it to him.

One of my work friends came out and gave me a hug.

I left again.

I went to one of the suppliers who was my fave to pick up parts from to ask if they’d have room in the budget for an extra set of hands. I can drop off a resume but there’s no guarantee. I understand it’s sudden and I didn’t expect an answer this morning. I will drop off a resume today or tomorrow. Hope kinda perked up because they’re good people and wants to work there.

I came home. Pessimism unloaded on poor Hope. “I FUCKING TOLD YOU I FUCKING TOLD YOU I FUCKING TOLD YOU! THIS IS THE REASON WE DON’T GET OPTIMISTIC! THIS IS WORSE THAN WHAT EVEN *I* WAS EXPECTING. WE OPERATE ON THINKING ABOUT THE BAD AND GETTING WORSE. THAT’S HOW IT’S ALWAYS BEEN AND THAT’S HOW IT’LL ALWAYS BE.”

Hope shrunk. She held back tears.

Pessimism said everything and retreated quietly. I haven’t heard from either of them since. I’m numb and still processing. My groggy mess of memories from this morning keep replaying like a scratched DVD. I’m writing this to try to cope.

The East Ohio Building, originally known as the Tishman Building, also known as the 1717 East Ninth Building, East Ohio Building, is a skyscraper in Downtown Cleveland, Ohio's emerging Nine-Twelve District. Completed in 1959, it was one of the first modernist high-rises in Cleveland, along with the Illuminating Building. It is currently the 24th-tallest building in Cleveland, at 275 feet.  It was designed by Emery Roth and Sons of New York City. Tishman Properties also of New York City was the developer. Ground was broken in March 1958 and in April 1959 it opened to the public. There is a 600-car parking garage attached to the tower. It was built on the site of the old Greyhound bus station, after Greyhound built a new bus terminal on Superior Avenue a few blocks away from the East Ohio Building in 1948.

     East Ohio Gas, Cleveland's natural gas supplier, occupied the tower until its merger with Richmond, Virginia-based Dominion Resources. On the lobby level, East Ohio had a customer pay center and exhibits of the benefits of natural gas appliances. In addition, they had a meter showing how much natural gas was supplied to Cleveland.  On November 22, 2006, the largely vacant building was bought by New York City-based Sovereign Partners, LLC for around $12 million. The buying group planned on making certain improvements to the building, the details were announced in early 2007. It was named to the National Register of Historic Places on January 23, 2013.

     Plans announced March 22, 2012, indicate that the tower will be converted to 223 apartments, eliminating a huge vacancy in the central business district and meeting strong demand for new living space. It will then become the tallest fully residential building in Cleveland, Ohio.  The K and D Group of Willoughby, Ohio, recently signed a contract to buy the 21-story building. Apartments would fill that void by early 2014, if K and D succeeded in securing tax credits and other financing for its $65 million project.  K and D said it would open the first of 223 apartments in the downtown building in July 2014 and should finish the $65 million conversion by August 2015.

Anger Over ‘Shambolic’ Phone App Shares Sale

Britain’s financial regulator faces criticism this weekend over the “shambolic” listing on the London Stock Exchange of a healthcare company facing allegations that some of its shares were traded fraudulently.

The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) approved Umuthi Healthcare Solutions for admission to the London Stock Exchange (LSE) in March. The company has developed a smartphone app to help medicines reach doctors in remote rural areas.

Trading is now suspended in the firm. Police in South Africa are investigating claims that millions of nonexistent shares were sold to investors for about £2.45m before the flotation.

Anthony Morris, of the Umuthi major shareholder group, said: “This listing has been a complete shambles and should never have been allowed. There has been an abject failure by the Financial Conduct Authority.”

The firm denies any wrongdoing. It said the claims concerned share sales prior to its public listing between private individuals that “do not involve the company or its directors”.

The LSE’s main market has about 1,300 companies from more than 70 countries. Listing is described as a “badge of quality”.

The FCA, which reviews company prospectuses before admission to the LSE, has faced criticism of its performance and effectiveness over the last year after a string of financial scandals. Campaigners described the disclosure earlier this month by the Observer that the regulator has paid staff more than £125m in bonuses since 2016 as an “absolute insult”.

Umuthi has operations in South Africa, but wants to expand to other African countries and Europe.

The South African Police Service said last week that the company’s chief executive, Gert Viljoen, and a female consultant, Connie van Nieuwkerk, were arrested over fraud allegations earlier this month.

A police spokesman said: “It is alleged that the CEO with another executive persuaded the shareholders to buy shares that did not exist. Thirty shareholders lost R50m [£2.45m] due to misrepresentation. The investigation is continuing.”

Investors claim the FCA missed a series of red flags that should have blocked the listing. Van Nieuwkerk was fined by financial watchdogs last year in South Africa for the publication of financial statements that were false or misleading.

One of Umuthi’s non-executive directors, Colin Bloom, a prominent Conservative party supporter and a government adviser on faith, said he had resigned from the company last month. He said he had no knowledge of any suspicious activity and has asked the Serious Fraud Office to investigate.

Umuthi has developed a smartphone app that allows doctors and pharmacies in remote areas to directly order drugs from healthcare suppliers. It was listed on the LSE on 4 March, but trading is now suspended.

Umuthi said in a trading update on Thursday: “Mr Viljoen has been released on bail. The allegations appear to relate to over-the-counter sale of Umuthi shares, transactions over which the company and Mr Viljoen had no control or involvement.

“In addition, a consultant to the company, Connie van Nieuwkerk, was arrested as part of the same allegation.

“Ms van Nieuwkerk had no operational role at the company.

“As a result of the arrest, the company has terminated forthwith the consultancy agreement with Ms van Nieuwkerk.”

Viljoen has denied any wrongdoing and says the listing went through “rigorous verification processes”. Van Nieuwkerk did not respond to a request for comment.

An FCA spokesperson said: “We are aware of the issues raised here and are liaising with the relevant authorities in South Africa. As issues relating to the company emerged, we immediately suspended the listing to protect investors, and at the current time it remains suspended.”
