Indigenous Brazil community stays on flooded land in dispute with developer
Tumblr media
Stranded for nearly three weeks by record flooding in southern Brazil, one tiny Indigenous community is determined not to evacuate what they consider sacred ancestral lands that are in dispute with real estate developers.
The Mbya Guarani people have been living since 2018 on a peninsula in far southern Porto Alegre, the state capital of Rio Grande do Sul.
The community has long been at odds with Arado Empreendimentos Imobiliarios, the firm that has been planning a residential development on nearly 426 hectares (1,053 acres) in the area for over a decade, part of which is in dispute.
Heavy rains have battered Rio Grande do Sul since late April, causing historic floods that have killed over 160 people, while nearly 100 residents are still missing and more than 500,000 have been displaced.

Climate change is undeniable
Brazil's southernmost state, Rio Grande do Sul, is going through the worst flood of its history. Almost half the state is underwater, including state capital Porto Alegre. There are pictures in news sites that are absolutely terrifying. I have seen videos of at least five different bridges being carried out the the water in the past four days only.
Rio Grande do Sul underwent a big flood last September, and it was already incredibly frightening. There were storms in June and November too, but September was bigger. And this current storm has been lasting longer already. Things are likely to get worse in the next week - weather forecast says rain will give the state a break starting tomorrow, May 5th, but by the 8th it should be raining again.
The pictures explain better than my words can:

But if Rio Grande do Sul and its neighboring state Santa Catarina have been facing massive floods, the rest of the country is going through the fourth heat wave of 2024 (they consider a heat wave when the weather is over 5° C above the average temperature, for several days). Now, you must be thinking: Brazil is a tropical country, it's supposed to be hot.
It's not supposed to be 37° C in fucking May.
We have a state in the southern region, called Paraná, whose capital city, Curitiba, is the coldest state capital in Brazil. In fact, there is a stereotype (very much confirmed) that Curitibans are insufferable when it comes to talking about the weather, because no Brazilian, in any place of the internet, talking from anywhere in Brazil, can complain about the cold without a Curitiban showing up from nowhere and saying "well, but here in Curitiba is colder". They really are that insufferable.
Curitiba's average temperature for May is 12° C to 21° C. I just checked: it's 28° C right now. Curitibans have taken to forums to complain about the heat, which must be unheard of, because those assholes (I love you guys, but you're assholes) can't stop talking about the cold all damn year. I have never, in 40 years of life, have seen them talking about the heat so much.
When I was a kid, i used to wear coats for some periods of the year. Rio has never been a place to wear heavy coats, but you know, long-sleeved shirts, a denim jacket during the winter? Normal.
I can't remember the last time I consistently wore a jacket. It was probably before the pandemic, and only because of the air-conditioner at work. It just isn't cold enough to wear anything more than short sleeves for more than three or four days in the entire year.
Climate changes are undeniable. Anyone who's denying it is either incredibly stupid or incredibly ill-intentioned.

Last week, over 350 towns/municipalities in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, were disastrously affected by unprecedented floods due to heavy rains in the region. Many rivers and bodies of water in the region, inundated and submerged many towns under brown, muddy water. The number is far from certain, but many people lost their lives, homes, access to food, clean water, hygienic products, and many other basic needs. *100% OF PROCEEDS acquired through Cameo will go towards to those affected by this natural disaster. *My Cameo account will stay open for ONLY 2 WEEKS from today (ending on May 23rd). *Donation will be made through @/brazilfound *Final count of donation will be made public once videos are finalized. Hi
My name is Eduardo Freitas, I'm a Brazilian historian and writer, author of two books about the Star Trek universe.
I live in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, which was recently hit by an unprecedented climate catastrophe. Over 400 cities suffered intense flooding, leaving thousands of families homeless, with more than 1 million people directly affected by the floods.
At this moment, we need donations of clothes, medicines, food, animal feed, and volunteers to help with the transportation of donations and the sheltering of rescued individuals. We rely on your help to spread this great tragedy internationally and reach a greater number of people who have the means and availability to assist us.
If possible, please share links to reliable sources describing the tragic events and providing guidance on donations. If there is any mobilization in your country to help the people of Rio Grande do Sul, please assist by sharing on your social media as well. We rely on your help. Live long and prosper.
Thank you.

Do the recent or right-now-ongoing crazy global weather scare you? Bother you? Interest you?
I'm pulling this from various media sources, because there is so much crazy weather happening now, or that has happened within the last couple of weeks, it seems like no single media source is picking it up.
From Heatmap AM:
Houston’s floods – More than 400 people in and around Houston, Texas, evacuated their homes over the weekend due to flooding. At least one person, a child, was killed. In one nearby county, more than 21 inches of rain fell over five days last week. The rain has tapered off but the cleanup has just begun.
Brazil’s rain – In Brazil’s southern state of Rio Grande do Sul, days of intense rain caused the Guaiba River to overflow and flood more than 340 cities, including the region’s capital of Porto Alegre. At least 78 people are dead and more than 115,000 have been forced to evacuate. One climatologist calledthe catastrophe “a disastrous cocktail” of climate change and the El Niño effect. “It looks like a scene out of a war,” said Rio Grande do Sul governor Eduardo Leite.
Chile’s fires – Fires in Chile’s Valparaiso region, fueled by an intense heat wave and enduring drought, have killed at least 51 people and burned more than 64,000 acres.
Kenya’s deluge – Flooding and landslides in Kenya from unrelenting rainfall have killed more than 200 people. It is still raining and the weather is forecast to worsen throughout the month of May.
Southeast Asia’s heat wave – A lengthy heat wave has shattered temperature records across Southeast Asia, forcing many schools to close. One weather historian called the heat wave “the most extreme event in world climatic history.”
From the Associated Press (AP):
A weekend spring storm that drenched the San Francisco Bay area and closed Northern California mountain highways also set a single-day snowfall record for the season on Sunday (May 5) in the Sierra Nevada. The wet weather system had mostly moved out of the state by Sunday morning, but officials warned that roads would remain slick after around two feet (60 centimeters) of snow fell in some areas of the Sierra. “Did anyone have the snowiest day of the 2023/2024 season being in May on their winter bingo card?” the University of California, Berkeley Central Sierra Snow Lab asked on the social platform X. The 26.4 inches (67 centimeters) of snowfall on Sunday beat the second snowiest day of the season — March 3rd — by 2.6 inches (6.6 centimeters), according to the lab.
From Yale Climate Connections:
For the first time since the 2010s, a high-risk outlook for severe weather (level 5 of 5) has been issued for parts of the Great Plains. The outlook was put in place at 8 a.m. EDT Monday, May 6, and updated at 12:30 p.m. EDT Monday by the NOAA/National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, as a busy few days of severe weather moved into high gear. Dozens of tornadoes could erupt by midweek, including in and near Oklahoma on Monday and across a broad swath of the mid-Mississippi and lower Ohio River valleys on Wednesday. Many of the worst tornado U.S. outbreaks of recent years have played out across the Mississippi Valley and Southeast, but multiple rounds of twisters have hammered the Plains since late April, taking at least seven lives and wreaking what will no doubt be hundreds of millions of dollars in damage.
From Wikipedia:
On 16 April 2024, heavy rains caused floods in the United Arab Emirates, affected cities of mainly Dubai and Sharjah, the northern Emirates, and different areas of the Emirate of Ras Al Khaimah. According to the National Center for Meteorology (United Arab Emirates) , this was the country's heaviest rainfall recorded in 75 years. The floods in the Emirates were a part of the greater Persian Gulf floods.

Submerged by flooding, Porto Alegre realizes it was unprepared: 'Everything has to be rebuilt'
Tumblr media
Three weeks after being hit by one of the worst climate disasters in its history, which left at least 157 people dead, 88 missing and forced the evacuation of 540,000, the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul is still partly submerged.
After slipping on her rubber boots, Darcilla Melo Da Silva, 58, took a deep breath before she stepped through the metal gates of her house, guided by her husband, Admar, 68. The scene she had so feared to see for the past 12 days appeared before her eyes. The vegetable garden where she had planted cabbage and herbs to alleviate her severe health problems was buried under a layer of mud. The remains of a white hen lay among the tangled planks, next to her new washing machine, which had been swept into the garden by the current and had ended up crushed under a tree trunk.
The interior of her house, which took her 40 years to furnish, was even more desolate. A smell of rot was pervasive. Without any electricity, Da Silva had to discover the extent of the damage by the light from her husband's smartphone: holes in the roof, raised floor, overturned armchairs... "Everything has to be rebuilt," said the grandmother barely able to breathe.
The retired couple, who lived in the Cidade Baixa district in the west of Porto Alegre, were among the 540,188 people who were forced to evacuate their homes in early May when floodwaters engulfed two-thirds of the towns in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, a hilly area on the border with Argentina and Uruguay with a population of some 11 million.
Since April 27, torrential rains have battered the region, raising the level of the Guaiba, a body of water – considered as much a river, lake or estuary – that borders the Porto Alegre metropolitan area, by several meters. On May 6, the day Darcilla Melo Da Silva and Admar evacuated their home, the water level reached 5.3 meters: the most severe flooding since 1941, when the Guaiba had risen to a height of 4.76 meters.
"This extreme event is the result of global warming" aggravated by the El Niño phenomenon, said Francisco Aquino, climatologist and head of the geography department at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul. As temperatures rise, "we expect them to become more frequent and intense."

I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart if you could wish positive energy…
It's hard to find words that describe exactly what I'm feeling right now. The state I live in, Rio Grande do Sul - Brazil, is suffering from floods, thousands of people losing everything, their families, homes, EVERYTHING, some people only have the clothes left with them. Many animals, houses, cars and people being swept away by the current, people are stranded, this is the biggest natural disaster that has ever happened in the state of Rio Grande do Sul.
The state capital: Porto Alegre, is practically under water, the Guaíba river has overflowed at a record level (about five meters) and there are cities where the water reaches the roofs of houses, in Canoas apparently there are reports of bodies floating, the Feliz city had 75% of its territory devastated by the rains, roads are blocked or collapsed.
The rains remained in my city throughout the week, except for yesterday on Sunday and according to the weather forecast today on Monday, however, the rest of the week has rain forecast, and if the rains return, everything starts again. I just hope that during Sunday the authorities were able to rescue as many people and animals as possible and that these people are now in a safe shelter.
In my city where my house is located, it is out of risk and I am so grateful for that, but places where friends, colleagues and relatives live are at great risk. There are colleagues and friends of my brothers with whom contact has been lost because they live in affected areas and no one knows what could have happened.
Brazil (my country) mobilized completely to help with the rescues and also to donate money and supplies such as food, clothes and blankets to the flood victims.
Therefore, I ask those who cannot help directly, to please send positive energies to us, for the recovery of these cities and these people and our planet. Please hope for the well-being of these people. May this tragedy end soon and may it not cause any more victims along the way. May we all be safe soon. My English is far from being decent so there are probably a lot of grammar errors. =)

Traffic in Rio Grande do Sul:
Due to the floods, many highways are damaged or blocked. Below is a link to a map which shows which roads are blocked:
Important: as of May 5th, 2024, there is a route from Canoas to Porto Alegre through Viamão and Gravataí, possibly also through Alvorada. Porto Alegre is still basically isolated however.
