smooching tony so cutely
Tumblr media
IT'S A GAME. a white queen makes her latest checkmate, a soldier lost to an iron fist. the proposal is a secret, a facade between two reputable heroes. a transaction, business his forte, manipulation her greatest treasure. skepticism painted his features at the idea of a marriage to hide a secret, to protect another. but eye candy is eye candy, they've always gotten along. memories of fashion shows sitting idly by each other, a few drunken yacht parties in youth replaced by adulthood alongside blurred lines. THE PAPERS PAINT A POWER COUPLE, the truth is greater. tony drops the newspaper at her sudden display of affection, nose scrunching before he presses his lips to hers. [ ice cold is bullshit. they could ignite the room in this kind of heat, fire upon fire. ] ❛   you're making me late. ❜  arms envelop hers, the sunshine illuminating her features as they step forward on the terrace. in the distance, the waves coarse against the bay, malibu beaches as pristine as emma frost's eyes. he drops hand to her waist, pulling her closer. emma's nose is merely a centimeter away as his voice drops. ❛   i thought our arrangement only applied to the public? or are we having second thoughts?  ❜

Gaston Castel house and studio, Marseille
2 impasse Croix-de-Régnier, 13001 Marseille, France
By Roger Jones, June 27, 2024
I previously wrote about a Gaston Castel-designed building in Marseille in this post.
Tumblr media
Gaston Castel, portrait by Oscar Eichacher, 1952
Gaston Castel (1886-1971) was one of the most prominent 20th-century architects in Marseille, whose works included the Opéra Municipal, Compagnie Transatlantique headquarters, the annex to the Palais de Justice, the prison at Les Baumettes, social housing ensembles, and other notable buildings and monuments. From 1909 to 1913, he studied at l’ Ecole nationale supérieure des beaux-arts de Paris; he was the winner of the second grand prix de Rome in architecture. In 1918 Castel was named Departmental Architect of the Bouches-du-Rhône, of which Marseille is the capital, and would later be named Chief Architect for the department, a post he held until 1941.

The atelier-maison, or studio and home, of an artist, had a tradition in Marseille. A notable example was that of Pierre Puget (1620-22 - 1694), at the corner of rue de Rome and rue de la Palud in 1681 (see photograph below). Built at the sharp intersection of two streets, the house-studio's situation anticipated that of Gaston Castel's much later design.

Existing buildings at the time of land purchase. Gaston Castel et les artistes, p. 43
In 1921 Castel purchased a parcel of land at the top of the present cours Franklin Roosevelt, then occupied by a beverage depot. The plot was long and irregular, at the sharp angle of two streets. Castel would treat the narrowest side of the building, at the angle of two side streets, as the principal facade, with a large bay window on the main living floor, flanked by two small oval windows. At the base of the bay window he placed a bas-relief of a woman's head, slightly inclined, surrounded by a palm. The top level was occupied by a terrace, surmounted by a pergola. Construction began in 1924.

The lowest level of the building was reserved for a garage, workspace, and archives of the architectural practice. The street level, entered from the impasse Croix-de-Régnier side, led to the principal stairway and reception area, as well as space for the printing of plans and the reprography room.
The principal floor (premier étage) contained the living quarters, with a salon and dining room occupying the narrow portion of the building. The uppermost level, lit by many windows, contained the architectural working spaces. In the 1930s, Castel would decide to add a third floor. Emmanuel Laugier, in Gaston Castel and les artistes (p. 44), describes a "harmony of proportions" of the design. "Le dernier niveau de l'immeuble, le toit-terrasse, est une synthèse entre méditerranéisme et style moderne; il est impossible de ne pas évoquer ici les ponts des paquebots." [The last level of the building, the roof terrace, is a synthesis between mediterraneanism and modern style; it's impossible not to evoke here the bridges of steamships.]

This mantelpiece dates from c. mid-1930s, replacing the one in earlier photos. It was designed by Castel, and carved by Auguste Cornu (whose signature appears on the piece). The initials "C" and "D" on either side stand for "Castel" and "Duprez" (the family name of his wife Gabrielle-Eugénie Duprez). The mantel was removed after being auctioned in 1989, lost for a time, located, and finally reinstalled in 2009. Link to PDF of Castel inventory

Following Gaston Castel's death in 1971 and that of his son in 1989, the property and its contents were put up for auction. Tentative plans for restoration were put forward.
But in the end nothing materialized and the house remained in a state of abandonment for a few years until it was bought in 1993 by Mr and Mrs Gérardin, art enthusiasts, who gave the house and its interior all its luster back, thanks to an ambitious renovation program. The residence opens on the occasion of very rare days (heritage, architecture, etc.) tourisme-marseille
La Provence provided a quote by the building's buyer:
Depuis quinze ans, ils ont entrepris des travaux de titan, jusqu'à racheter des meubles dessinés par Castel et dispersés. Dominique Gérardin parle d'un amour "au goutte à goutte, par transfusion" pour cet architecte. "Nombre de fois je me suis dit que j'aurais bien aimé connaître ce sacré bonhomme", souffle-t-elle. Translation: For 15 years, they undertook the work of titans, including re-purchasing furniture designed by Castel that had been dispersed. Dominique Gérardin speaks of a love "bit by bit, by transfusion," for this architect. "Many times I told myself that I wish I had known this revered man," she breathes.

Camellia Street home of Lee.
Even if the name Liberace didn't immediately suggest the piano, youd have a faint idea that the two were someth hat connected after you glimpsed the North Hollywood home of this amazing virtuoso' For the piano theme is dominant throughout the house. Beginning with the living room is ith Liberace I fabulous ebony Bluthner concert grand piano keying the room, through to the bedroom, with a miniature white piano on the headboard of his studio bed there are literally hundreds of pianos. So many, in fact, that the artist savs that now he'll hae to get a larger home soon. Ardent Ians His ardent fans, of course, are responsible for most of the miniature pianos. And though he has a genuine fondness for each one of those sent to him, it is a physical Impossiblity to display all of them at any one time. Liberace has specially designed mirrored wall cases on either side of his fireplace on which many of his famous miniature pianos are displayed, but he says that many more have to be packed away. Libei ace himself was the decor-atoe of his Valley home, which he shares with his mother, Mrs Frances Liberace. His younger brother, Rudy, did live with them, too, but now he is in Korea with the Army. Suzette, a winsome miniature French poodle (another gift from a fan) has her own place In the household and was the Inspiration for the decor of another room In the house but more of that later. Green, gold, Chinese red with accents of gray and black are used throughout the entire house. Plain green walls, sculptured gray wall-to-wall carpeting, green and gray print traverse draperies are the background colors of the living room. Custom-Done A custom-done gold sofa fits snugly into bay window of the living room, with a large brass planter behind it. The coffee table in front of the sofa is you guessed it in the shape of a grand piano Liberace designed it himself and It was made for him by Mario Ingeniously done, the coffee tAble is also a planter with a glass top above it. Liberace also designed the lamps. They are a striking combination in black and off white. One of the pair has a grand piano in the design; the other, several notes of music. Another custom piece in the living room is the large modern cabinet in black and gold, which houses a television screen, radio, recordplayer and recorder A pair of Chinese red chairs and a black and gold chair are used here, too Place of honor in the living room goes to the Bluthner grand piano The only one of its kind in the world, Liberace had it rqade in Leipsiz just before World War II At that time there was one other likp it, but that and the factory itself were destroyed by bombs, so Liberace's is the only one left. It is a foot longer than any concert grand piano in this country and is certainly the most handsome piano I have ever seen At least three hours a day the renowned pianist practices on It, but he does not take the piano about any more for his concert or TV appearances. Scenic Wallpsper It is in the dining room that a visitor really begins to realize the scope of Liberaces compound talents The scenic wallpaper above the green dado here, was designed by Liberace himself and was inspired by one of his own compositions "The White Cockatoo. Colors in the dining area are green, white, crimson with touches of gold for accent. Period furniture in gleaming mahogany. The chairs have crimson upholstered seats and lyre backs. Handsome silver accessories are used effectively on the dining table and server. Off the dining room is an enclosed patio with barbecue and outdoor eating facilities. Comfortable green leather ehaiis, built-m cabinets, a second fireplace add to the charm of the den, off which opens a second enclosed patio. Again evidence of Liberace's own talent for decorating are evident. In the den Is an unique lamp made of three square fish bowls put together. What's more there are real live fish swimming around in it Outside, in the patio, is a tiny fish pond with a fountain, which the artist fashioned. Cocoa, White Cocoa and white is the color scheme for the master bedroom Liberace s. Off-white furniture, brown and white fabric in a modern piint are used throughout. And as elsewhere in the house, several miniature pianos are on display His mothers room is done In period furniture, with frilly feminine details andt keepsakes of hei family. The powder room decor was inspired by Suzette, the French poodle. Poodle paper Is clever hert and Liberac himself, added smal oal mirrors at intervals over th( wallpapered surfare Its a blue and white kitchen lr the house, with all evidences tha the family has a real flair foi cooking and enjoys It Coppei touches and a bright peasant wail paper in red and blue in the break fast alcove make it a bright happy spot. The world knows Liberace as a tremendous favorite m hotels, supper clubs, theatres, radio and television (he now brings his talent eoast-to-coast to TV audiences wilh "The Llberaee Show NBC-TV Tuesday and Thursday, 7 30 pm. Terrace House News 4
Terrace House Season 4 Episode 3 – Reactions
AAAAAHHHHHH!!! Oh my God, oh my God, oh my God, it’s happening! Lu Yao wants to see Qiao Chusheng naked!! I called it back in episode 1 and people mocked me! But here we are. Saying that, who can blame him? I always knew Qiao Chusheng was an attractive man but seeing him breathless and sweaty. It did things to me. And then they go home together, and Lu Yao got to run his hands all over that toned, tanned body. To tend to Qiao Chusheng’s wounds of course. No ulterior motive there, I’m sure. Also, cutest moment of the show so far? Chusheng falling asleep on Lu Yao’s shoulder.
Ok, turning the ship part of my brain off and moving to the rest of the episode. And again we’re back to Qiao Chusheng and Lu Yao. This was a sweet moment. We get a better insight into Lu Yao and his family. His father has hidden his disappointment of his son and you can see how unhappy Lu Yao is on photographs of them together. It’s telling that it’s his sister calling him to pass on a message from their father. But Lu Yao is going to spend the Lunar New Year with the Bai family. This is definitely going to be a slap in Lu senior’s face. I am very curious as to why Bai Qili wants to meet Lu Yao. You think he wants to make sure he’s good enough for either of his children?
So again Tong Li and Qiao Chusheng are together and again they are talking about other people in the house. But fair play to Tong Li, she knows what she wants, and she goes after it. I still can’t bring myself to ask someone else out but she just goes for it. Like I’ve said  before, I see these two as friends and nothing more, but I’ve been wrong before. These two could end up married yet.
Without a doubt, the major surprise of this episode was finding out that Lu Yao and Bai Youning were going on a date. I think Chusheng’s face said it all. Their relationship has improved noticeably, but it’s still not the best. They can hold a conversation and Lu Yao cooks enough food for her.  And they certainly don’t have a healthy basis for a relationship. What if Bai Youning reverts to her old ways? Will Lu Yao fight back? I doubt it somehow, especially when she turns violent, which we’ve seen her do more than once. But all we can do is wait and see. Maybe they’re each other’s one true love. But I won’t put any money on it. Not yet at least.
And we’re back to sad family time. Everyone knows that Lu Yao was raised by his sister, so it’s obvious how much he loves her. And from what he says, she seems to love him just as much. Good, this boy needs someone willing to fight in his corner. Lu Miao is an intimidating woman, imagine her being your mother figure. I would pay good money to see Lu Miao and Bai Youning meet. It would be a bloodbath. Bai Youning needs someone to tear her down to size, who better than the woman capable of taking on any politician who faces her down?
And yes, before he Bai Youning fans complain, I know she’s getting better. But she’s still so self-entitled and really thinks a lot of herself that it’s painful. I don’t see a relationship based on verbal and physical abuse and violent interactions succeeding.
Let me know your thoughts below.

Totally agree with the Bai Youning thing. She’s still very childish. Lu Yao needs someone who’ll reign him in when he has one of those ideas that will blow up his oven. I don’t think Bai Youning is that person.

All you people complaining about Bai Youning need to shut up! She’s had such a hard life and none of you appreciate that! Leave her alone!

I’m sorry. WHAT? A hard life? She’s been spoilt by her rich father her entire life. He got her a job in that rag that calls itself a newspaper and made sure that anyone who tries to sure her for libel gets dealt with. She’s had an easer life than any of us. Jesus Christ!

Rio Cultural Centers - Flamengo Options
Thinking about renting an apartment in Flamengo? Excellent idea! Flamengo has become an increasingly sought-out neighborhood in Rio for several reasons, including its art deco architecture buildings, famous bars like Belmonte and ultimately its cultural centers and museums. Until the 1950s, Flamengo and Catete were the principal residential zones of Rio's wealthier middle class and that may be the reason why some of many embassies (today consulates) were established here.
Nowadays, Flamengo is a vibrant middle-class residential neighborhood, with much charm and culture to be had. In this article we will describe some of the cultural centers and museums established in the Flamengo district including the Modern Art Museum, Oi Futuro Cultural Center, and the Catete Palace. The best thing is that most of these marvels are free.
Our first stop is the city's Modern Art Museum. It has a privileged location on Flamengo Park alongside Guanabara Bay, with the landscaping designs of Burle Marx. The Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro started its construction in 1954, and is perhaps architect Affonso Eduardo Reidy´s most striking design: rows of angled concrete ribs support and enclose the gallery space. Inaugurated in 1958, the Modern Art Museum has a very unusual history; after a tragic fire in 1978 burned most of its collection, and damaged  rent an apartment in embassy gardens accra the structure of the building, a tremendous reconstruction effort put the  museum back on its feet, and today the permanent collection has over 2,000 pieces by Brazilian and international artists. A major contribution was made by art patron Gilberto Chateubriand, with a private collection of 4,000 pieces. It is also under the care of MAM, and can be seen in the permanent exhibition. An interesting program of art shows and exhibitions keep the museum as an excellent attraction throughout the year. An impressive collection of the works of Picasso, Max Ernst, Rodin, Brancusi and other artists from Brazil and elsewhere is housed in this concrete and glass building in Flamengo Park.
Another major attraction of the Museum of Modern Art is the film collection ("Cinemateca do MAM"), one of the best in Latin America, with over 12,000 titles including some rarities. There are sessions and festivals open for the general public, with Brazilian and foreign cult movies that are not normally shown on the commercial circuit. Art workshops are held at the Oficina da Gravura. Additional Information on the Modern Art Museum in Rio: Open from Tuesday to Sunday, from 12 noon to 6 p.m. Av. Infante Dom Henrique, 85 - Flamengo Park.
Our next Cultural Center for Flamengo is OI FUTURO, located at Rua Dois de Dezembro, 66. The Center is maintained and supported by major telecom player in Brazil: OI and has been receiving since its founding grants from several foundations to enhance its cultural assets and infrastructure. OI FUTURO is housed in a building that was built in 1918 and has just been remodeled, resulting in a gain of over two thousand square meters of internal space. The building's façade was preserved. There are four floors, interposed among the building's eight levels, connected by glass stairways and elevators. Each floor presents different exhibits throughout the month. OI FUTURO's varied program includes activities related to music, videos and plastic arts. Visitors will also find an up-to-date library with an abundance of research material: magazines, newspapers and on-line computers as well as exhibition rooms. A full multi-use theater with 180 seats presents regular plays every week, at popular prices. A very charming Wi-Fi connected bistro is located at the upper floor of the Cultural Center, which leads to the terrace of the building. From the terrace, you can even see part of the Flamengo beach and Guanabara Bay. You can check OI FUTURO's monthly cultural program and schedule in English.
Additional Information on the OI Futuro Cutural Center: Open Hours: Tues-Sun. 11am-8pm; Address: Rua Dois de Dezembro, 63 - Flamengo, Phone:(21)3131-3060. Free Admission for several exhibits, with the exception of theater plays.
Our last stop is the Catete Palace. The Catete Palace - seat of Brazil's Republican Government from 1897 to 1960 and scene of activities of eighteen Presidents - has seen some of the most important events in Brazil's political life, including the Declaration of Brazil's entry into World Wars I and II and the suicide of President Getúlio Vargas in 1954. Transformed into a museum when Brasília became the nation's capital in 1960, and closed for restoration from 1983 through 1989, the Republic Museum reopened with a broad-ranging cultural program that includes exhibitions, concerts, plays, movies, videos, boutiques, restaurants and a book-store.
The gardens of the Museum acquired new lighting, with the replacement of 71 forged iron posts - in the eclectic style - for other posts with contemporaneous designs made of steel. Today, on the ground floor, the Entrance Hall and the Ministerial Room still retain the solemn atmosphere of capital meetings and decisions regarding the nation's destiny. Two long-standing exhibits present historical information about the first occupant of the Palace and his descendants and about the inauguration of the Republic Museum. The remaining rooms hold temporary exhibits that represent varied aspects of Republican Brazil.
On the second floor, known as the "noble floor", luxury and thematic diversity stand out. The Chapel room and the Blue, Noble, Pompeian, Venetian, Moorish and Banquette rooms show off their vintage Brazilian and French furniture, paintings from artists such as Baptista da Costa, Gustavo dall'Ara, Décio Vilares, Rodolfo Amoedo, Henrique Bernardelli, besides sculptures, chandeliers and porcelain from the 19th and 20th Centuries. The third floor highlights the reconstruction of President Getúlio Vargas' room. The remaining rooms are devoted to the display of objects, text documents and photographs from the Republic Museum's own collection. The complex also hosts one of my favorite movie theaters in town. The theater is especially known for its art movies and is named "Cinema Museu da República". You can check the theater's schedule in any newspaper in town.
Additional Information on the Catete Palace: Open Hours:Tues-Thurs-Fri, noon-5pm Wed, 2pm-5pm- Sat-Sun-Holidays, 2pm-6pm. Free admission Sundays and Wednesday to the Catete Museum. Address: Rua do Catete, 153 - Catete. Phone: (21) 3235-2650 The park in the Catete Palace is opened for visits until 10 p.m.

How to Prepare a Garden Plot
Preparing a garden plot for planting is an important step in the process. Getting rid of weeds and prepping the soil properly will ensure your garden grows successfully. It will also reduce the maintenance required for the garden plot. Start by choosing a good location and size for the plot. Then, test the soil and prepare it properly for planting so the garden plot thrives.
Planning the Garden Plot
1
You're reading: How to Prepare a Garden Plot
Pick a spot that fits the sunlight needs of your plants. Vegetables and flowers usually require at least six hours of full, continuous sunlight a day to thrive. However, some plants prefer shade or little sun. Check the growing instructions for the plants you want to grow before you choose your spot.
If your plants need full sun, find a spot in your yard where there is a lot of direct sun for the majority of the day.[1]
If your plants need partial shade, observe your yard throughout the day to see where the shady spots are. Put your garden in one of these patches.
2
Choose a spot that is level and even. The garden plot should be on flat, even ground. This will ensure water is evenly dispersed in the plot and everything grows evenly.
If you have to choose a spot that is sloped, you will need to terrace the beds by building them up with boards, flat rocks, or wood slabs.[2]
Make sure the spot is at least ten feet from trees and shrubs. You do not want the roots of trees or shrubs to get into the garden plot, as this can disrupt the plants.[3] The shade of trees and tall shrubs can also negatively the garden plot.
3
Use raised beds if you’re in a colder climate. Raised beds are boxed in wood above the ground. Raised beds are good for colder climates because the soil warms up faster in spring and you can plant sooner. This type of garden bed usually results in a higher yield of crops, especially vegetables.[4]
You can buy raised beds made of cedar or recycled plastic at your local hardware store.
You can also build your own raised garden beds.
4
Go for in-ground beds in a warmer climate. In-ground beds are more common than raised beds and are ideal for warmer climates. In-ground beds require less watering than raised beds. They also do not cost anything but they do require you to bend down to weed and maintain.[5]
In-ground beds are more susceptible to weeds and pests than raised garden beds. They also usually yield less crops.
5
Decide how many beds you are going to plant. Usually a garden plot will have several beds. Multiple beds allows you to grow several different plants in one plot. You can then rotate the different beds to have healthy crops every year. A smaller plot of 100-200 square feet can fit four to six beds. A larger plot can fit eight to ten beds.[6]
The beds should be 4 feet or less wide so they are easy to weed and tend. You should also include 21 inch (53 cm) pathways between the beds so you can roll a wheelbarrow through it.
If you buy a raised garden bed box, you may not need to worry about having a pathway between the beds. Instead, make sure you place the boxes with enough space between them to walk through.
Mark Out the Plot
1
Get rid of the existing lawn. If you are putting the garden plot in your yard, you will likely need to remove existing topsoil and grass. Slice under the sod with a spade and cut it into small handfuls. Then, take off the sod and put it in your compost or use it to patch up bare spots in your yard.[7]
2
Remove weeds and debris. Not all plants that are considered weeds are harmful, so before you remove weeds, figure out which existing plants will be harmful and try to take over your garden.[8] You can use a weed guide online to figure out what kind of plants are growing in your yard.[9]
If you’re growing larger plants, like trees and bushes, you can simply mow the surrounding weeds regularly to keep them at bay.[10]
If you’re growing perennials, place mulch at the base of the plants to prevent weeds from growing. [11]
For annuals, place layers of cardboard on the ground with a layer of compost on top before you start planting. This will smother all the weeds and leave you with a clean slate for gardening.[12]
You should also remove any surface garbage in the plot. Dig out any inorganic matter in the plot like bottle caps, plastic, or newspaper.
3
Mark the plot with string and stakes. Use string and stakes to mark where the plot is going to be in your yard. This will make it easy for you to clear the area to prepare the plot for planting. Put stakes on each corner of the plot and attach string to each stake.
Preparing the Soil
1
Read more: How to level a garden – easiest ways to fix an uneven lawn or sloped landscape
Test the soil. Having the soil tested will ensure the soil has the right balance of pH and nutrients to grow plants well. You can use a home testing kit to test the soil. You can find home testing kits at your local hardware store.[13]
You can send a sample of the soil to your local cooperative extension service or bring it to a garden center for testing.
2
Dig the plot. Use a pickaxe or a pitchfork to double dig the soil so the new garden beds grow well. Dig to a depth of 12 to 18 inches (31 to 45 cm). Remove rocks and roots in the plot.[14]
3
Add organic matter to the soil.[15] Depending on the pH of the soil, you will need to add organic matter to improve the soil’s fertility. Add organic matter like compost, animal manure, plant manure, and sea soil to adjust the pH so the plants grow well in the plot.[16]
Layer 1 to 2 inches (2.5 to 5 cm) of organic matter over the plot. Dig or hoe the organic matter into the top 6 inches (15 cm) of the soil so it reaches the root systems of the plants.
4
Turn the soil.[17] Use a garden fork or a rototiller to turn the soil once more. Break up any large chunks of soil and get rid of any stray rocks or roots. Turn the soil when the it is dry and not too wet. It should crumble easily when squeezed in your hand.
5
Put up barriers around the plot, if needed. Once the soil has been turned, it is prepared and ready for planting. If you are planting tall vegetables or plants like tomatoes and cucumbers, you will need to put up barriers around the plot to protect them from wind. Use fencing panels, hurdles, or a hedge to protect the plot.[18]

STORY: The Silhouette Pine
A short story. After her grandmother’s death, Jennifer is distraught at the thought of the house she remembers from happy childhood holidays being sold. However, when she tries to convince her mother to hand the house to Jennifer and her boyfriend, she stumbles upon something much darker from her past.
Not horror (or anything supernatural), but quite dark.
As usual, if you enjoyed it, feel free to check out my Patreon.
The Silhouette Pine
By Christina Nordlander
By the time they got back from the funeral buffet, it had started drizzling. Mum parked behind grandma's pale yellow VW. Jennifer looked out at the back window and saw only the reflection of their bonnet. She and Joakim had been in the back seat when grandma drove them into the city. If she focused she would feel the smell of tobacco smoke and leather, so old it had become something concrete and grainy.
She got out and hurried her steps to be close to mum in case she needed someone to support her. It wasn't necessary, and dad was next to her. Mum walked with her head a bit bowed, but there was nothing weak in the outline of her face.
Joakim had run ahead up the garden steps, two sets of steps with a flagged landing in the middle where Jennifer had slipped and busted her lip one winter. She couldn't remember the pain, just that uncle Gunnar had joked with dad that she'd been in a fight and that they should have seen the other guy.
Grandma had come to the door and hugged her every time they'd gone here: shorter than herself the last few years, with woollen scarves in warm colours around her shoulders when it was the least bit cold, perfumed with a stronger version of the scent that was diffused through the house. (Mum was still going to have to feel it, though the body that had walked around in its centre was gone.) It was too easy to deal with when it was a relative you'd only met on the holidays. She'd been old and it had been quick. The last time Jennifer had met her, last Easter, she'd been happy. She'd asked how the dissertation was coming along. Jennifer hadn't brought her notes, but she'd talked about viruses and horizontal gene transfer like an enthusiastic little kid showing off a shell collection, and grandma had said that she was doing well.
*
There was nothing special about the size or architecture of the house, though the basement had been exciting when she was little: it was a largish terraced house, single storey, with a flat black tin roof and a little atrium covered with a wooden deck. The price was probably mainly due to the location, close to Djursholm with its fenced harbours on Framnäs Bay.
She got her chance when she went to make some tea. Mum was sitting at the kitchen table, reading the newspaper in a circle of light. Outside the windows was nothing but blackness.
“You want a cup of tea?” Jennifer said.
“That's nice of you, honey. Lapsang, please.”
Grandma hadn't had an electric kettle. She poured water in the smallest pan and waited for it to boil. It was soothing, standing in the light and watching the bubbles starting to form on the reflecting bottom.
“You sure I can't have the house?” she said while they waited. “That way, it'll stay in the family. It's about the right size for Bayram and me, and I wouldn't have to stay with his family any more.”
Mum sighed.
“It's not that simple,” she said without looking at her. “We can't just give the house away. It would have to be taken up with mother's attorney. Besides, you wouldn't be able to pay the tax on a house like this. The two of you don't even have jobs.”
When Jennifer didn't say anything she went on:
“You can always go and check if there are any books you'd like. All that stuff we’re allowed to take, movable assets.”
It was enough. Perhaps she should have asked more, to find out whether there was a loophole. Bayram would have liked to live here, he'd barely been to Stockholm. They could have continued studying up here.
The water had started bubbling. She put the teacup by mum's elbow and took her own into the living-room.
When she was little, it had used to confuse her that grandma's house had two living-rooms: the small one with the TV – dad and Joakim were in there now watching something with mum's siblings – and the long room that took up the better part of the house. Now she could think of it as a library. One wall was covered in books, soft leather spines with deep gold print. Across the room was a French window on the atrium, lit beneath the clear black sky.
Of course she shouldn't have brought it up with mum today. She hadn't had much of a choice; in two days they were going home. They were selling the house. If one of mum's relatives had wanted to keep it she would have understood.
It wasn't the wealthy suburb. It wasn't the ornaments that grandma had moved out of reach for her and Joakim when they were too small to trust their strong flabby hands: vases in ribbed grey-green celadon, porcelain shepherdesses trimmed with lace so fine you might think it was fabric until you touched it. Over there, on the little sewing table by the atrium door, there had been a box with a surface that looked like a mosaic of sliced pearls, but grandma had said that it was made of shagreen, sharkskin. The box wasn't there now. Gunnar or Ulla must already have packed it.
She wouldn't have asked to keep any of the ornaments. Not even the books, though they would have been harder to say no to: a collection of La Fontaine's fables with Classicist copperplates, a Mucha catalogue, a book with colour reproductions of William Blake's art that had given her nightmares when she was a kid. She put the cup on the coffee table, took out the Blake book and sat down on the puffy plush couch where she'd used to sit and read when they came here, maybe with a bag of travel candy next to her. Was that the one she should pick? After the conversation she hardly wanted to take anything, but should she lose the things she had a right to because she felt ashamed?
When mum walked past towards the TV room, Jennifer looked up.
“You know, you're coping well,” she said. “I wish I were as tough as you.”
Mum lit up, faintly.
“I wouldn't say it's strength, Jennifer honey,” she said. “I've had a lot of time to prepare.”
She went in there herself later, because the room was lit and warm with people, with Joakim leaning on his elbows on the carpet.
She sat at the left end of the couch, closest to the window, and her gaze slipped outside and across the road. On the other side of the lampposts lay the forest. It was a block of darkness against the paler sky, but one higher pine leant sideways from some storm, before she was born. It was the sigil of grandma's house. Nowhere else did the forest have the same outline.
*
The next afternoon she went for a walk. It was November, raw and wet rather than cold. They'd used to go here for the Christmas and February breaks when the cold scorched, and dad had made a fire when she and Joakim came back from sledging. She'd sat in front of it, her back to the darkness in the window.
She tried walking as far as she could in the direction of Stockholm proper, but of course she hadn't got far before darkness fell and she had to turn back to be on time for supper.
On the way home she looked for the pine on the forest edge and found it after a while. She put her hand on the deeply ridged bark that had grown chilly like metal. When she looked across the road, all the windows were lit in yellow.
She had a quick immature impulse to stay here by the foot of the pine until she froze to death or they let her stay. It was too melodramatic, for the sake of a house.
*
Dad had impressed them with chicken Kiev and panna cotta for dessert, and it was her turn to wash up. Mum stayed next to her to dry the crystal glasses. It wasn't much past six o'clock, but it was winter, already night. Tomorrow she would wake in the room with the sofa-bed for the last time.
“I guess there's still no chance.”
She tried to make her voice jocular, but it just sounded high-pitched. Mum's profile was hidden by a band of dark hair while she dried the last glass.
“No, I don't see why you think you have a right to it, after what you did to your brother.”
It was too absurd. Jennifer couldn't get angry.
“What do you mean? What did I do to Joakim?”
She'd already started searching for memories: when she'd told on him for calling a classmate something foul, when she ran off while he was babysitting her and dad had given him a telling-off. None of that merited mum's tone.
“It wasn't Joakim,” mum said.
Her voice was so choked, Jennifer could barely make out the words.
“What do you mean, then?”
Perhaps she shouldn't have insisted, not when someone's voice sounded like that.
“No, Jennifer,” mum said, “don't you worry about that. I shouldn't have said anything.”
“Seriously, I didn't mean to... Forget the house, of course I don't need a house, but what do you mean about my brother?”
“I said I shouldn't have said anything!”
Mum's voice tore on the last words. She hurried out of the kitchen, a bit crouched.
She needed to finish washing up. There were a lot of dishes, they'd been seven. After a few minutes, the work and the repetitive motions had returned her to some state of calm.
While she was rinsing out the sink she heard footsteps in the door. She turned her head and managed a smile, in case it was mum, but it was dad coming to top up his beer. He grinned.
“Thanks, Jennifer. You do a good job.”
When she asked, it sounded abrupt.
Dad's shoulders sagged.
“For starters, I want you to know that it wasn't your fault,” he began. “You were just a little kid.”
*
She’d known that she'd had a brother who'd died in childhood. He'd never been more than a name and brown hair on some pictures in the photo album. For a while in primary school she'd been afraid of telling people about him, because then they would find out that she didn't feel anything.
If it had happened a year later, she might have remembered. She could remember things from when she was five.
It had happened in another set of garden stairs, in the old terraced house they had moved out of afterwards. It hadn't even been in the winter, slippery with ice. She'd been four years old, Alvar two. Joakim had been in his room or out playing, he wasn't in the story. Alvar hadn't dared to walk down the stairs, so she'd held his hands and walked behind and over him like a sensible older sister.
Perhaps she'd told him he wasn't allowed to walk down the stairs by himself.
They'd come running out when they heard her screaming. She'd sat crying on the stairs and at first they'd thought she was the one who had fallen.
Quick blinks of sunlight. When he tripped, his little hand slipped in hers and she didn't dare to grab it in case she tore his shoulder joint. Or was that the twenty-one-year-old Jennifer trying to reconstruct it? She thought she could remember the sun and the tarmac below the steps, but nothing else.
“We called the hospital,” Dad said, shrugging. “He hung on for a few days, but there wasn't a lot they could do.”
Her breath had become loud in her ears. She looked down at her hands. They were a grown woman's hands, probably with some scars she hadn't had then, but it was the same flesh, the same skeleton.
“I didn't know,” she said at last.
Dad nodded his heavy head.
“It wasn't right of Yvonne to tell you,” he said. “Especially like that. You can't be held responsible.”
He supported himself on the tabletop, standing up. Jennifer looked up.
“Is it OK if I have a glass of wine?”
It was one of the few times she'd had a drink – the first time she'd drunk for intoxication. The wine had an acrid fruity flavour that clung to her teeth. She took several quick gulps, because otherwise she might smell blood in her nasal cavity.
She hadn't known Alvar. She didn't remember, and yet it had been she. The moment she thought she would make it, that she would be fine, she remembered a birthday card that Joakim had sent while he was studying in Lund. It had said To the best sister.
She took another gulp. It was intended as an anaesthetic, but they only had that one bottle of dark wine. She hadn't felt anything yet, except that emotions became harder to resist. If this went on, she would be too weak to cope.
By the time she put the glass on the sink she couldn't feel any effect on her senses. She went into the bedroom and took her coat and hat. Everything around her was warm and cocooned. Her skin sucked up the warmth, and yet she didn't stay. The debit card lay stiff in her coat pocket. When she zipped up the coat, she smelled the soap from grandma's bathroom on her hands.
She walked down the steps in the orange light of the lamp on the garage wall. It wasn't raining, but the asphalt was glittering wet.
There was a bus-stop further up Svalnäs Allé. She glanced up at the timetable: a little under fifteen minutes to go. That was almost too much, but the coat was warm and she could pull her hands into the sleeves. She'd read once that alcohol thinned the blood and made it easier to freeze to death. She wouldn't die as long as she was standing up.
The wine had made all perceptions slower. Perhaps you died because you didn't care as much about the cold. It was going to get colder. Sweden was spinning towards the heart of February, with dry paving-stones and a cold that made you pant and forced you to the ground like some religious visitation.
Perhaps they'd heard when she opened the front door, but nobody came for her. Across the road the windows shone yellow, the light that meant home.
The bus braked and lowered itself with a sighing noise. The heat was wondrous on her skin when she got in, like sitting in front of a fire. The bus set itself rolling, towards the city, and she left them.

The Chase Files Daily Newscap 10/21/2019
Good Morning #realdreamchasers. Here is your daily news cap for Monday, October 21st, 2019. There is a lot to read and digest so take your time. Remember you can read full articles via Barbados Government Information Service (BGIS), Barbados Today (BT), or by purchasing a Daily Nation Newspaper (DN).
BUT CHIDS GOVERNMENT – THE BARBADOS UNION OF TEACHERS (BUT) is dissatisfied with what it says is Government’s lack of response to the viral outbreaks affecting teachers and students across the island. Following a service at the Ann Gill Memorial Methodist Church yesterday to mark the start of Teachers Week, BUT president Sean Spencer said he was not seeing the desired level of communication or cooperation.“The issue is, we’re not hearing from either ministry (Ministry of Education and Ministry of Health) about best practices in this situation. You’d think they’d be working together,” he said. (DN)
ON BOARD – Many commuters are hopping on board the plan to place GPS devices on public service vehicles (PSVs). In both the Constitution River and Cheapside terminals yesterday, passengers spoke about the rowdy behaviour on some PSVs and welcomed the news that some form of monitoring system was in the works. “That sounds like something which will bring some discipline which is much needed. Maybe they should also include something to detect when they smoking [marijuana] and drinking [alcohol]. “My problem is these ideas start but then don’t continue, so I hope this follows through,” said Andrea Grazette, adding she also liked the idea of a mobile app. (DN)
TAXI OPERATORS TO GET THEIR DUE – Taxi operators in Barbados have been told that too long they  have accepted the crumbs of three or five per cent of the gains from the tourism industry and that they will be “plugged into the visitors’ economy”. That message of hope was delivered by the Minister of Tourism and International Business, Kerrie Symmonds as he gave a feature address to the Bridgetown Port Taxi Co-op Society Ltd’s 30th anniversary dinner at the Copcabana on Bay Street, St Michael, Saturday night. “Your history is one of struggle. But your 30-year celebration is one of diligence, the dedication to duty, the hard work of all of you who have made the co-op what it is today . . . . “The social and economic injustice which you guys have gone through 30 years ago must be seen as behind you and you must be plugged into the visitors’ economy.  When you have 255 operators at the Bridgetown Port, you cannot accept that between three to five per cent of the cruise ship business goes to the 255 people. Then who is getting all of the rest?” asked Symmonds. (DN)
FINANCE MINISTER LEADS DELEGATION TO IMF, WORLD BANK ANNUAL MEETINGS -  Minister in the Ministry of Finance, Ryan Straughn, led Barbados’ delegation to the just-concluded International Monetary Fund (IMF)/World Bank Annual Meetings in Washington, DC from October 14 to 20. The delegation included the Governor of the Central Bank of Barbados (Alternate Governor of the IMF), Cleviston Haynes; the Director of Finance and Economic Affairs (Alternate Governor of the World Bank), Ian Carrington; and other officials from the Finance Ministry and the Central Bank of Barbados. While in Washington, the Barbadian delegation attended the Commonwealth Finance Ministers’ Meeting and participated in the Caribbean Caucus Meeting facilitated by the World Bank Managing Director of Operations, Axel van Trotsenburg. The delegation also met with Kristalina Georgieva, the IMF Managing Director, and Tao Zhang the IMF Deputy Managing Director, and participated in the Small States Forum with United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, and World Bank President, David Malpass. Aside from the obligatory meetings of the IMF and the World Bank, the delegation held bilateral discussions with partner countries, financial institutions and private sector investors. The Minister also held talks with the external creditor committee to wrap up the debt negotiations that led to the in principle settlement of the external commercial debt restructuring. Minister Straughn thanked the members of the committee for their patience and their continued commitment to Barbados, as the deal allows the Mia Mottley administration to put the country’s public debt on a sustainable trajectory and to restore macroeconomic fundamentals. The Annual Meetings of the Boards of Governors of the World Bank Group and the IMF bring together Ministers of Finance, central bankers, development partners, parliamentarians, private sector executives, representatives from civil society organizations and academics, to discuss issues of global concern, especially the world economic outlook, poverty eradication, economic development, and aid effectiveness. (BT)
REDUCED PUMPING AT DESALINATION PLANT MAY CAUSE LOW LEVELS – Ionics Freshwater Inc is advising the public that it has been forced to reduce pumping at its desalination plant because of technical issues being experienced on Sunday. The reduction in pumping from this facility on the Mighty Grynner Highway MAY result in low levels to customers of the Barbados Water Authority (BWA) in some parts of St Michael, St James, St Peter and St Thomas. This situation is currently receiving the attention of the plant’s engineers. The BWA will service any affected customers via water tanker as a temporary measure. Ionics Freshwater Inc apologizes for any inconvenience caused. (BT)
FOGGING SCHEDULE OCTOBER 21 TO 25 – The Ministry of Health and Wellness’ fogging programme will continue in four parishes next week. On Monday, the St Peter districts to be fogged are Diamond Corner, Lower Castle, Upper Castle, Gays Road, Mount #1 & #2, Boscobel, Collins, and the environs. The team will be in St James on Tuesday, spraying Sion Hill, Sion Hill Terrace with avenues, Westmoreland, Porters Road, Lancaster, and surrounding areas. On Wednesday, the St George districts of Bird Hill, Sinclair Road, Coral Drive, Bakers Close, Grace Drive, Haggatt Hall Development, Cutting Road, Mapp Hill, Dash Valley, Hanson Heights, and the environs will be sprayed. Areas to be fogged in Christ Church on Thursday, are Sargeant’s Village, Bartlett Road, Sargeant’s Village Tenantry Road, Browne’s Road, Smith Road, Warners Gardens, and neighbouring districts. The team will return to St James on Friday, to fog Paradise Heights, Hopefield Close, Wanstead Drive, the 2nd, 4th and 6th Avenues of Wanstead Terrace, West Terrace, West Terrace Gardens with Avenues 1 to 16, Oxnards, Violet Circle, Cherry Drive, West Terrace Heights and surrounding areas. Fogging takes place between 4:30 and 7:30 p.m. each day. Householders are reminded to open their doors and windows to allow the spray to enter. (BGIS)
HOLDER: PHIL CAN DO IT – West Indies skipper Jason Holder has thrown his full support behind newly appointed head-coach Phil Simmons. Bursting with confidence after leading the Barbados Tridents to their second Caribbean Premier League (CPL) Twenty20 trophy, Holder says he is optimistic about once again working with the former test player. Simmons, who was announced head coach of the regional side last week on a four-year contract by Cricket West Indies (CWI) in a media statement, played an integral role in the Tridents reaping CPL supremacy. In an exclusive interview with NATION SPORT, Holder who was recently relieved of the limited over captaincy, said he is anticipating improved performances from his team under Simmons. “I’ve worked with Phil on numerous occasions before. He has obviously been the coach of the West Indies team and he just won a title here with the Barbados Tridents. Phil and I have a really good relationship and I expect good things from him,” Holder said. (DN)
EASY 7-0 WIN FOR BDFSP – Rashad Jules’ hat-trick was the standout performance on Saturday night as his Barbados Defence Force Sports Programme (BDFSP) side easily brushed aside Abrahams United Silver Sands 7-0 in their Group 3 football game at the start of the Capelli Cup Championship stage at the Wildey Turf. Nicholas Best also contributed a brace to the BDFSP cause to send a resounding message to the other teams about their serious intentions. In the opening game, Crane & Equipment Ellerton secured a hard-fought 2-0 win over Pride of Gall Hill, courtesy of well-timed goals by Damien Walcott and Shaquan Clarke. For the first 20 minutes, Silver Sands dealt admirably with the challenge posed by the Defence Force. An error in the defensive ranks in the 24th minute allowed Best to sneak in the box and head home from close range following the mix-up.  (DN)
NATIONAL LIBRARY SERVICE ADAPTING TO CHANGING WORLD – The National Library Service is adjusting its mandate to meet the demands of a swiftly changing world, Minister of the Creative Economy, Culture and Sports, John King said. On Sunday, the National Library Service commenced celebrations for the organisation’s 172nd anniversary, where King showered library officials with praise for being a gateway to knowledge and culture in society. “The resources and services they offer create opportunities for learning, support literacy and help to shape the new ideas and perspectives that are central to the creative and innovative society. They also help to ensure effective record of knowledge created and accumulated by past generations,” he said. “In a world without libraries, it would be difficult to advance research and preserve the world’s cumulative knowledge and heritage for future generations. Whatever the cost of our libraries, it’s cheap compared to that of an ignorant nation.” The Culture Minister reflected on the year, 1847 which saw the Public Library Act passed. He however pointed out that since then, demands on the National Library Service have transformed from providing physical books to internet access, mobile service to assist schools in rural communities, photocopying, outreach initiatives, audio books for the visually impaired and access to e-books among other services. He said library officials remained cognizant of the age of technology and are attempting to move Barbadians toward digital literacy by facilitating a number of discussions on key topics. “In the near future, the library plans to host presentations on technological issues such as block chain, cyber security and social media. I encourage you to listen out for these events and support them with your presence,” King urged.(BT)
HEALTHY ST. ALBANS – The students at St Alban’s Primary prefer to drink water more than anything else. In fact, when the boys and girls of the St James-based institution are feeling thirsty they quickly find the water-cooler, a tap, or buy bottled water, or reach into their school bags for the water they brought from home. Hundreds of bottled water are sold at the school weekly. According to principal Wendine Prince, the students do not have other choices since the school banned the sale of carbonated beverages in 2016 when she took up the leadership position. Two brands of juices that have low sugar content are only sold on Thursdays. “When I came here, what I observed was that children were eating very unhealthily. At break time you would see them with all types of sodas, and all types of sweet snacks. “It bothered me because if we do not take care of our children’s health now what will happen to Barbados’ future is that we will have an unproductive society because most of the time people will be ill. “So I decided at the beginning of the school year in 2016-2017 that we are going to stop selling any sodas, or juices which are just as unhealthy as sodas if they are loaded with sugar,” she said. Prince recalled that when she broke the news to teachers at the school that only bottled water would be sold they told her that students would not respond well to the new development since they were accustomed to sweet drinks. “But when we implemented it in 2016, a few weeks after the janitor came back and said ‘Ms Prince, the children are purchasing the water very well.’ And I said to her ‘it would happen because you are now changing the culture’. “So once you start to change the culture, eventually children realize this is what is happening at the school. There are no other alternatives, so we drink water. At times we would sell mauby, and the mauby wasn’t selling as well as the water because they had started getting accustomed to the water,” she said. The principal said that after realizing that not all students had the finances to purchase water daily, she approached an old scholar, Wendy Alleyne, about purchasing a water cooler. The school is now in process of acquiring another water cooler, due to an overwhelming response from students to the first one. “Our objective is to have a water-cooler on each block for the children. Children will change how they eat if we the adults make sure that we are providing them with healthy alternatives. There is a parent who is a nutritionist and I have asked her to provide us with a list of healthy alternatives to the snacks that we were selling to the children. She provided us with that list and we are now working on changing our offerings to the children concerning snacks”. The school is now selling fruits to students on particular days, and according to Prince the response to that initiative has also been overwhelming. The principal said she believes that the school has a greater responsibility than simply teaching academics. She stressed that students must also be taught how to live healthy lifestyles. “It is not the Ministry of Health. We have to lead the role as teachers and we too have to model the behaviour. I have implemented an exercise programme at the school and we also push athletics. “We bought a whole set of skipping ropes and we realize some students can’t skip. In the past, skipping was something that everybody could do, but not now. So we are promoting healthy movement and eating because the two must go together,” Prince said. (BT)
NOW THE CHILDREN CAN PLAY – After ten years of waiting, the students at St Silas Primary, Orange Hill, St Michael finally have a new play park to call their own. On Thursday, participants of the Prince’s Trust International Team Programme who played a significant role in designing the park officially handed over the facility to the school. Principal Sharon Sealy said she was excited when the participants chose St Silas as the place where they wanted to carry out their community project. She said for the past 10 years, the school made several attempts to reopen the facility so the 143 students would have somewhere to play. “But finances was against us. So this opportunity was one we grabbed with both arms because the children wanted it and they were asking all the time ‘ma’am when are we going to get the play park fixed that we can get into it?’ Now we have a brand new play park by the efforts of the young people and that makes it even more special,” Sealy said. The Royal Barbados Police Force (RBPF), in conjunction with Prince’s Trust International, a registered charitable organisation in England and Wales, embarked on a partnership to deliver the Team Programme in Barbados. The programme is designed to assist young people between the ages of 16 to 25 who are unemployed or not engaged in any formal aspects of educational or vocational training, and who may be considered “at risk” because of these factors. Team coordinator for the Prince’s Trust International Programme, Sergeant Hallam Jemmott said the BDS$1000 the participants raised through a fundraising effort was added to donations made by business places and individuals. The total cost of the project was over BDS$3000. “For the next two weeks the participants will go into job placements where they will be placed at various business places. That was designed to give them an opportunity to see what the world of work is, to look at their attitude and their aptitude towards work. “The whole idea of the programme is to get them into the world of work. So rather than sitting down home doing nothing you prepare yourself for work” Sergeant Jemmott said. The Sergeant said that while there have been several success stories coming from the Prince’s Trust Programme in Barbados, he was proud to report that at least two graduates have joined the RBPF and others were now working in various sectors.(BT)
MAURICE BISHOP’S UNIQUE REVOLUTION – Today marks the 36th death anniversary of Maurice Rupert Bishop who led New jewel Movement members in the first – and only so far – revolutionary takeover of a government in the English-speaking Caribbean. As was relayed during a recent symposium commemorating the tragedy of Bishop’s death, there are examples of discontent among the populations of many Caribbean countries, but none so provoking as the circumstances in Grenada that saw Bishop and NJM overthrow the administration of prime minister Eric Gairy and establish a People’s Revolutionary Government in 1979 until he was deposed and, along with a number of colleagues, executed by firing squad on October 19, 1983. Head of the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill, Campus Department of History and Philosophy, Dr Henderson Carter, said that the Grenada revolution is so important that it should warrant a lecture by Professor Brian Meeks (on which Barbados TODAY has already reported) and a symposium as well. “There are generations of young people born after 1979 who have no idea of what happened in Grenada during the 1970s under Eric Gairy, and during the period under Prime Minister Maurice Bishop,” he said in opening remarks in the Cynthia Wilson Arts Lecture Theatre last week. Panellists were retired journalist, Tim Slinger; Chair of Africana Studies at Brown University, Rhode Island, USA, Professor Brian Meeks; Senior Lecturer in Political Science, Cave Hill, Dr Wendy Grenade; and Associate Professor of Caribbean and Diaspora Studies, Arizona State University, USA, Dr David Hinds. Testimony by Grenade,  a Grenadian, of experiences from a pre-teen at the time of the revolution, perhaps more than other historical accounts, pointed to the uniqueness and lasting impact of the 4 ½ years of revolutionary government that ended in a dispute over  the form of party and government leadership needed. That dispute fractured NJM and saw militia of one faction executing Bishop and government ministers Fitzroy Bain, Norris Bain, Evelyn Bullen Jacqueline Creft, Keith Hayling, Evelyn Maitland, and Unison Whiteman. “I was in a ‘Gairyite household, a Pentecostal household, but in the Anglican high school,” she said, adding that, “a contradiction of worlds produced me because at home you would be hearing this revolution is about anti-God. Then you go to school and you’re a 12-year-old little girl and you understanding Apartheid and imperialism in Form One.” Stating that the Anglican high school’s revolutionary education “helped to bring balance to my little mind” she added: “it’s no surprise that a number of us who were high school children during that period, we end up questioning [colonial] empire and we are dealing with issues of social justice”. “Something happened in that period that produced a particular type in me… in many of us.” Hinds listed rebellion in Union Island; protests in Guyana leading to the assassination of Walter Rodney; insurrection that fell a Dominica government; a St Lucia radical vote for change to a leftist government; and revolution in Suriname, all in the 1970s and 1980s, as the influencing atmosphere for Maurice Bishop and the NJM. “All of these rebellions and insurrections were happening in the Caribbean at the same time of the Grenadian revolution.” While endorsing Hinds’ analysis, Professor Meeks offered that causal factors of the Grenada revolution were more and different. Distinguishing between popular upheaval, a revolutionary situation, and a revolution, he said: “in the Anglophone Caribbean, in the 1970s, there was only one revolution. It was the revolution in Grenada”. Meeks, a former lecturer in political theory, comparative politics and Caribbean political thought at four universities in the US, Suriname, and UWI, added Trinidad and Tobago to the list Dr Hinds had put forward. He however said of the lot, except Suriname, “there was a period of upheaval but in only one country was there a revolution, an overthrow of the state and an attempt to reconstruct the society on entirely different foundations”. “There were special conditions in Grenada which led to a revolutionary situation.” He said that unlike most of the Caribbean that experienced labour unrest between 1936 to 1938 giving rise to trade unions and political parties, “this is postponed in Grenada and it happens in 1951” when Gairy was elected to the colony of Grenada’s Legislative Council. “Gairy comes to the fore, but his very existence, his personage, doesn’t fit the bill. And the middle classes … are very unhappy with him. The upper classes are very unhappy with him.” Discriminatory practices of Gairy, who was in and out of office, served as Premier and led the country to independence in 1974, was at the same time angering working class Grenadians. “So what we were having is this crisis at the top in that the people who are the economic and social elites are not having the political leader. They’re hostile to him. There is no united top, a crisis from below as people are not seeing the benefits of Gairyism. This crisis at the top and crisis from below is the context in which the New Jewel Movement emerged as an organisation.” (BT)
