Devil’s Glen by StudioAC
Devils Glen is located on the Bruce Peninsula a few hours north of Toronto. The design process began with a picnic on site where a discussion focused more on the natural elements of site rather than the building, and this inspired an ethic for the project to come. The design began with two fixations, one having the house sited true to a NSEW to take advantage of the solar path throughout the day, the view to the water and to avoid disturbing as much of the natural habitat as possible. The second fixation was to have the roofscape act as a device to shape light, levels of intimacy and vantage points to the treetops, water and sky beyond.
The house is organized in two linear bars, one with sleeping quarters and the other with open living. A modesty to the plan that uses a simple grid of 12’ x 16’ for living spaces and 12’ x 12’ for sleeping allows for unobstructed life to exist within. A simple shift of the two bars produces a covered terrace facing the water and a covered porch at the entry, while simultaneously increasing privacy for both the primary bedroom and the secondary bathroom facilities. This shift in the bars and the siting of the house also conceals the view to the water upon arrival to the site. Once you enter the house the landscape and water are revealed via vignette style windows facing the forest and an expansive glass wall facing the lake.
The plan is capped with a seemingly simple roof that structurally and formally responds to the extensive snowfalls that can happen in the area. A modesty is observed in the roof’s formal and structural concept using framed and clad trusses to increase lateral stability, but these have a dual purpose. While the exterior face of the roof is consistent, a freedom was observed with what could be done with the partition between the two bars above the height of primary walls. Within each bay this partition is allowed to sway from left to right sometimes producing an intimate gable, a grand shed, or a funnel of light. This tactic is played with further in the form a skygazing platform that brings you up into this roofscape to view the treetops, clouds and stars.
The choice of a singular metal building was inspired by farm buildings in the area and a robust galvanized spec free from finish colours increases the robustness and reflects the hues of the landscape and sky throughout the day. On the interior a simple application of white painted drywall and plywood on the roofscape diagrams the architectural device while producing an unfretted backdrop for art, views, and sunlight.

Repairing an Air Protein Fin in Superior City City workers conduct the operation of construction A.N.T.s (Autonomous Networked Things) as they repair a carbon capture coil near Superior City. The line between work and play is at best a fuzzy affair in Central Shield. Every citizen is expected to participate as a member of the Central Shield’s Civic Corps. Duties run the range from simple park maintenance to more complicated activities like construction and engineering of the megastructures. In exchange for their contribution to the well being of the city, the S.A.B reimburses each citizen for their efforts with a biweekly civic dividend (a form of universal basic income). This dividend is calculated such that those with the lightest duties and time commitments receive a generous living wage while those who commit more time and expertise are rewarded with larger payments. #SpeculativeDesign #SolarPunk #Biomimetics #Swarm #3dPrinting #architecture #engineering #robotics #AI #Ants #termites #carboncapture #airprotein #artificialmuscles #simulation #designfiction #FutureParfait #CentralShield #MarcNgui #LakeSuperior #ubi @cphfutures @instituteforthefuture @mcewenarchitecture @wevolver @cornelluniversity (at Terrace Bay, Ontario) https://www.instagram.com/p/CoNelLFpcE5/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

North Ontario (3): Neys and Sleeping Giant provincial parks
After stocking up in Marathon, it was only a short drive to Neys provincial park, of which I had never heard of until I researched for this trip, although someone told me that this is the locals' favourite. Unfortunately the lakefront sites had already been booked so I sat a bit further back in the forest with less view but also less wind, which turned out to be of benefit as it was definitely not calm here!
Tumblr media
In the morning, it wasnt much better so went for a paddle on Little Pic River instead, which had some pretty rock faces and two high bridges to cross under (I had already heard the train overnight as it passed by at 4am tooting the horn to scare wildlife off the tracks), but then it quickly became shallow and I couldn't proceed beyond some gravel banks.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This meant that I had plenty of time to show up at the visitor centre for a guided hike of the prisoner of war camp that had operated here during the 2nd World War, during which a total of 3,000 Nazis were held here, on request by the British government to keep them as far away as possible from the front line. The site was later also used as a Japanese-Canadian internment camp, of which I had already heard of during a visit to the Human Rights museum in Winnipeg (which made me realize I'll always only be seen part Canadian with my rights being able to taken away at any moment), but I wasn't aware that Canada had also kept 36,000 mostly German prisoners of war in detention or logging labour camps... under the Geneva convention, if prisoners would be treated well here, Canadian prisoners in Germany should be receiving the same conditions, so in some distorted way, the Nazis were treated exceptionally well here with good food, an ice rink, orchestra etc. The reason that the camp was built here, is that surrounded by a freezing lake and black bears 😝 it would be impossible to escape (which indeed no one did). Although there's hardly any remnants left, overgrown by the forest in the last 80 years, it was one of the most interesting guided hikes I've ever done!
People on the tour were very friendly so we hung around afterwards for quite a while to share tips where to go next, why they loved it so much here (many being repeat visitors since 10-20 years), inquiring about my moving plans etc 😃
Feeling lazy, I sat a bit on the beach for lunch & reading, but the hard wind wasn't pleasant, so I went on another short hike to see logging boats that had been used by the PoW labour camps and just chill on the rocks. 🤗 I followed a group of Canada Geese that were battling the waves to get to a calmer spot and although I don't like them, I was impressed with their swimming capabilities!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It was dreary the next morning, so packed up the tent and went to a viewpoint of the lake... Aware of how quiet I am on a hike, especially compared to a group with children 😝, when there's no other cars parked/ people on the trail, I say the following verse out loud; "Hi hi, I'm a human. If you're a bear, please go away. I know I'm in your home but prefer not to see you today." 🤣🤣 I did hear at some point a loud cracking sound but it could very well have been a squirrel as those also can make a racket!
After a shower & in between rain bouts, I finally also hiked a small dune trail which showed a clear contrast between the planted pine trees in the 60's where the PoW camp had been (left pic) versus the original boreal forest with its shaggy trees and moss undergrowth in open areas (right pic).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
On the way further west, I made several pit stops to break up the drive; first up were the Aguasabon falls near Terrace Bay, then a pebble beach at Schreiber (where I tried to use my thermos as a selfie statif with mixed success 😉), followed by a viewing tower at Nipigon (where both the LCBO and beer store were closed on a Sunday so I would be dry for the next few days, not a disaster 😅), and last but not least the majestic Ouimet Canyon. I had heard about the canyon before, and although it's not entirely the Grand Canyon as someone described it to me 😁, it's impressive to see and to realize that the valley bottom is an Artic ecosystem with ice under the moss & rocks that never melts!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
At the canyon, I already heard thundering from far, so luckily I managed to set up my tent at Sleeping Giant provincial park before the rain started. It then rained for the rest of the evening so instead of experimenting with a roasted pork tenderloin on the fire, I ate chips in the car until I went to bed 🤨.
Despite the rain all night, next day the sky was very smokey with an orangy bleak sun if it came at all, so I forewent the famous 22k hike up the Giant (which I had already done in 2012 when I was here and although beautiful, wrecked my legs with shin splits from over-exertion). Instead I hiked easily to the Sea Lion arch with the giant as the backdrop (the head is to the right, then the body and completely left are the toes or knees I believe).
It felt good to be on the move so I did another hike after that to a secluded bay where the water was incredibly calm but cold so brought my bikini for nothing and instead really got into my book - thanks Navneet for giving it to me a long time ago as I really liked it! 😍
Back at the campground and after having read some more over a cup of mint tea, my body was up for even more exercise 🙃 so went for a 1.5hr paddle on Marie Louise lake; easy going along the shore to minimize fighting the wind and with the giant in sight. Although I'm definitely fitter than when I was sitting behind a desk all day, it does not translate into a thin body due to too much chips & beer 😜 but hey, I take it as it is!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The wood logs were wet of the rain & were hard to catch fire so I gave up and dove into bed early. In the morning, it was foggy so perfect excuse to finish reading the book in bed until 9am.
Today is 1st August so that means I've been on the road now for two months already! 🎉🎉 Time to leave stunning Lake Superior behind and get myself to the Prairies and the west.
Wildlife: 3 deer at Sleeping Giant
SUPS: one at Neys & one at Sleeping Giant
Hikes: four at Neys & two at Sleeping Giant
Distance driven this week: 759 km

Day 50 July 20 Schreiber - Marathon 100kms
This morning I looked out the window and thought…what an awful day! It had been raining a lot during the night and everything looked quite dismal.
No problem, I was trying to waste time today because the check in time at my Airbnb wasn’t until 6pm. ( I think this is a bit rude since everywhere else is 3 or 4pm.
Anyway, I was able to watch the women’s soccer game against Ireland. Yay! We won! No matter how slowly I tried to get packed I was still ready to go by 9am.
I forgot to mention that this motel/gas station/Robin’s Donuts/Pizza Hut was also a KFC before Covid. When I asked I was told they had scratched out the colonel.
Tumblr media
The rain had pretty much stopped by the time I left but it was still very overcast.
Second breakfast was only 15kms up the road at Terrace Bay. I had scoped out a coffee shop but after doing an extra loop around the town I found it didn’t open on Thursdays. 🤨 A few metres down the road was a lovely restaurant attached to the large motel on the highway. I was able to take my time over another coffee ( already had 2 cups in my motel room because the first one disappeared too quickly) and some French toast.
Yay, it was 10:30 when I left and the sun was coming out from behind the clouds. I was wasting lots of time just as intended.
When I had left the motel in Schreiber earlier the cleaning lady had told me there were three big hills today and they were all the same. Wrong! It was a pity Archie from the Gravel River Motel wasn’t there to set her straight.
Today there was 660m of climbing. There was a big climb at around 40kms but the rest was just a lot of up and down. This photo is from the top of the bigger hill.
Tumblr media
It’s pretty obvious that there is going to be more hills ahead.
There wasn’t many views of Lake Superior today but there were a lot of little lakes which were quite pretty.
Tumblr media
There is still a lot of roadwork here but I was able to ride straight through. The second one was holding up cars from a long way back in both directions. Only half the road was usable and there appeared to be a tractor on a trailer stuck there for some reason. There was just enough room for Shirley and I to roll by and continue past all the trucks and cars held up on the other side. I stopped to talk to a couple of drivers when they waved. They were obviously bored and needed someone to pass the time with.
I knew there wasn’t going to be another coffee stop today so I was glad to see the lookout sign at about 65kms. Naturally there were toilets and a picnic table there. This is Ontario!
Tumblr media
Great! I had checked my watch a bit earlier and noticed that I was going too fast. This was going to be a good place to waste time.
I ate a mandarin and settled down with my kindle for a while. Suddenly I realised someone else was sitting at my table. It was another cyclist!
Matthew was from Poland and was heading in the other direction, aiming for Vancouver. I warned him about the winds which were not going to be in his favour. He was foolishly hoping for a coffee place along the road. I knew there was going to be nothing for another 50kms so I offered to make him a coffee if he could heat the water. Yep! That’s what we did.
Tumblr media
Another lovely couple travelling in a car came over to talk to us too. We all took photos and exchanged cards etc. ( well I’m the only one with a card but Matthew had a very long instagram account name ) and eventually I headed off.
Another 30kms of ups and downs until the turnoff to Marathon. There was 4kms of downhill which I am going to have to go back up tomorrow morning. I found the Tim Hortons and settled in to write this and do some other things while I waited for my Airbnb. Almost immediately I received an email saying it was ready at 4:30. My map showed it was just up the road and there was a grocery store not too far out of the way. The shop was a dud ( no fruit and vegetables, just Indian stuff) so I’m going to have to go out now to get some fruit for breakfast and something for dinner. 😡
Tumblr media
I’m going to have to stop again tomorrow morning because there is no fridge here. Grrrr. Apart from that it’s pretty good.
Somebody asked for a map.

This is my home.  Northern Ontario.  A primal, mysterious and magical land of maternal beauty.  An ancient feminine spirit can be felt in these parts.  Her wrath can be witnessed in the rise and fall of Lake Superior’s frothing white mountains.  Her kindness, when she weaves herself a blanket of dancing white stars on a cloudless summers day.  It’s a place where artists come to soak in her spirit and attempt to capture the essence of this ancient force.
It’s the place where Anishnaabe folklore claims the gods split Turtle Island and created all forms of life.  It’s the place where The Anishnaabe have suffered in silence for generations at the hands of the Canadian government.  It’s a place where people are dying everyday due to extreme racism.  It’s a place where the first peoples are now reclaiming their ancient ways.  It’s a place where a cultural war is beginning.  It’s a place that will be home to momentous spiritual shift that will change the way Canadian society operates.
The North has rested for a long time but she’s giving her children the strength to rise again.  She’s ready to put up a fight.

Manitoba's premier says the rules around travel are changing in the province as cases of COVID-19 variants begin to surge in Canada.
During a news conference Tuesday afternoon, Manitoba Premier Brian Pallister said Manitoba is amending its public health orders. He said anyone entering Manitoba from other parts of Canada will be required to self-isolate for 14 days.
"There is real reason for concern, and we are acting out of a sense of concern and out of an abundance of caution," Pallister said. "We feel these measures are necessary now."
The health orders will be amended on Jan. 29. The mandatory self-isolation period will be required for people entering the province from anywhere in Canada, including those entering from northern and Western Canada, and from west of Terrace Bay in Ontario.

Another gem that I’ve driven by plenty of times before .... but one time I decided to pull into this place and take a look .... was I ever left breathless 🚙
.
Aguasabon Falls is an excellent stop along the trans Canada Highway !! Located West of Terrace Bay, this is an easy small walk down to the viewing platform to see the falls and the short boardwalk to the falls is as beautiful as the falls themselves! .
We grabbed some sandwiches from Subway and had our lunch at the picnic tables provided, made friends with a cool black crow and had a little rest here. I look forward to stopping g here again this summer. 😊

Demographic Shifts of Rural Canada
Many Canadian rural communities are experiencing a major demographic shift. However, each town is experiencing these changes in a unique way. Some populations are getting smaller and older, while others are getting larger and younger. The main determining factor is location. For the past several decades towns around the GTA have been growing to accommodate for the growing urban populations. Towns that were once rural and now completely overcome by subdivisions and commuters.
The opposite has held true for the town of Terrace Bay in Northern Ontario. This town was established as a result of the forestry industry and it all started with a pulp and paper mill. The industry flourished and many people moved there for work, causing a massive population boom. Unfortunately, after many financial struggles, the pulp and paper industry is not as dominant as it once was, and citizens of Terrace Bay have decided to move to new places. The population in 1991 was 2,477 and 20 years later the population had dropped to 1,471. This decrease can often be quite detrimental to a community.

Since Terrace Bay is no longer being supported by the pulp and paper industry, it must look for new ways to boost their economy and bring in new residents. The first step, however, is showcasing the town to whoever is interested to prove that it is a quality place to live. This is mainly being done through tourism.
Terrace Bay is home to many beautiful features including waterfalls, hiking trails, and beaches. These images have now become the promotional tools to advertise this town to the rest of the country with the hopes of attracting tourists. It also offers many recreational opportunities such as a golf course, canoe rentals, and Slate Islands Provincial Park.

Even their website seems to be more directed to visitors than to the residents. “Visiting” is the second heading at the top of the page, and I find this unusual compared to other town websites that I have seen in the past. The website also highlights their most popular features and attractions in a very obvious way, which proves their reliance on tourism.

I believe that Terrace Bay will be successful as a tourist destination because it is a very beautiful part of Northern Ontario and offers a lot of recreation activities. However, I find it disappointing that this town, along with many other Canadian rural towns, has suffered from urbanization leading to their ultimate reliance on tourism. This shift away from primary industries has been very detrimental to rural towns across the country and many have not been able to recover. Fortunately, I do believe that Terrace Bay will be able to attract new residents through the current use of tourism, however that might not be for many years.
