It’s High Time to Get Cosy with Indie Fantasy Books
Picture this. You’ve got a hot cup of tea at your side, you’re snuggled in your favourite armchair, the rain is tapping politely on your window. What better time to crack open a good book? You reach for the latest fantasy epic from a big-name author, but then you remember…you’ve already read this tale a dozen times. Elves, dragons, magical swords – been there, done that, got the t-shirt. Don’t…

Review: Shadowplay by Terry Mancour and Emily Burch Harris
Authors: Terry Mancour and Emily Burch HarrisPublisher: PodiumReleased: October 5, 2021Received: Review Request Shadowplay is the first novel in Terry Mancour and Emily Burch Harris’ Spellmonger: Legacy and Secrets series. Now, admittedly I hadn’t read the rest of the Spellmonger series before diving into this spin-off series, so it is awe-inspiring that I had no trouble following along. I will…

I was tagged by @cityoftheangelllls, but I'm starting a new thread! <3
Last song: Ophelia by the Lumineers
Currently watching: Gosh, I barely watch anything anymore, since I use all my free time for games, but I need to catch up on all the latest Star Trek series, except Picard.
Currently reading: If you can count audiobooks, since I consume one every couple of days while I work or play games, we have the Spellmonger series by Terry Mancour which I am enjoying so far, and The Kingdom Chronicles Series by Camille Peters, which is honestly super vapid and probably meant for pre-teens, but they're just entertaining enough that I will probably listen to them all, since I just need something to help entertain me while I do other things. Physically I am still reading Kingdom of the Wicked by Kerri Maniscalco, and The Nature of Middle Earth since I rarely ever carve out time to read anymore. Also Yona of the Dawn if we're counting manga.
Current obsession: LOTRO, I bet you had no idea! This is why I never have time to watch shows or read, since I tend to prioritize it. (But I have a wonderful time RPing with my friends, or running around levelling while on voice chat, so it's social too!) I do play other games too, just not to the same extent. This has been my obsession for like 6 years now though, so I keep waiting to get bored with it, since I usually cycle though hyperfixating on interests after a year or so. So you're supposed to tag nine people and I am always so bad at who to pick and I never want to make anyone feel obligated, so I will take the coward's route out, and say that if you want to do this, so this, this is me tagging you! Even if I don't follow you, go for it! The thread I jumped off of is here.

What's your opinion of the Spellmonger series overall? I've read the first two books and while I can excuse the sexism, I realized halfway through the second book that I had the map backwards east-west in my head, and the goblins seem like massively racist expies of Native Americans. Is the series worth pushing through for the (good parts of the) worldbuilding?
I didn't really get that vibe from the goblins, but it's not my area of expertise.
I enjoy the series because I enjoy the main character's antics. I also enjoy the realm building bits.
There are plenty of reasons not to enjoy the series, to be honest. I like a lot of the worldbuilding. Terry Mancour definitely can't write women or gays to save his life though. And try telling his fanbase that on the official discord server.

“Ancient Tech”  -- Right. Got it.
Been saying the One Piece world was a lost space colony for months now.
But I also read other science fiction stories in the past 5 years that had this as the twist as well.
me: “oh, this is a cool fantasy with a nifty magic system”
book:  but wait! it isn’t real magic! it is near unexplainable quantum space science!!!
If you like Young Adult books (and ones that treat the characters more age appropriate) I would suggest: The Pillars of Reality by Jack Campbell
If you want lots of action, adult themes, a long ass series that is still on going, and a more classic 70′s / 80′s / 90′s type epic fantasy setting: The Spellmonger by Terry Mancour.
Bonus:
The Villains’ Code - Drew Hayes: super hero novel. BUT! several of the characters have tropes in common with one piece characters. which having to come up with a series with a bunch of unique character powers often ends up with a lot of overlap (some powers, like gravity manipulation, show up in Hayes’ other super series: Super Powereds).... I just love a series with characters code named things like Johnny Three Dicks and Captain Bullshit.

Review: Warmage by Terry Mancour
General Overview A strong second installment of a fantasy epic series. Style The style that Terry Mancour employed in the first book is here again in buckets A first person perspective makes it read different to most conventional fantasy novels. Minalan is still a fantastic protagonist to get inside the head of, and his humour and that of Terry fits in perfectly for the book as a whole. I will say this though. My only real bugbear with the book is the repetition. I will accept some reminders in the first chapter for what has happened in the previous novel. It is a long accepted attribute of most novels and is quite useful. However, when this carries on, even into the penultimate, it just doesn't sit right. Facts have been established, I know them, no need for the protagonist to remind me of them again. This is my only real negative point with this book however. The style and structure of the whole book more then make up for this point. The book reads well, and Mr Mancour's skill is a writer is apparent. Story The goblin invasion continues. Minalan must move in greater more powerful circles as he strives to deal with the overwhelming foe of a Dead God. This book moves on well from the last, raising the scale, drama and intensity on from its smaller roots. This feels natural, and allows us to learn more about the interesting and vibrant world of the Five Duchies. Political intrigue has a greater roll then ever to play in this book, and this I believe will continue as I read through the series. It is great to see Minalan, now powerful enhanced wizard, tested in a climate where raw magical power isn't the only, if ever, the answer. You strong cast of archetypal characters firm up this story, and the ending is perfect. Satisfying, with a few unexpected outcomes. It has me more excited then ever to get into the next book as soon as possible. Final Thoughts As I said with Spellmonger, if you like fantasy, you'll love this book. Besides the minor issue I had with some of the writing, this is a good book, and I am looking forward to the next one.

Book review: The Spellmonger book 8: Court Wizard
I have read the previous 8 books in the series I have enjoyed everyone so far and the Court Wizard doesn’t disappoint. The plot this time is around Pentandra starting her new job as Court Wizard of Alshar and being newly married which takes place in tandem with the events of book 7 Enchanter. The story is good and introduces new characters which I can see to be developing well in future books, at times situations made me laugh or cringe with embarrassment. Overall a good addition to a good series of books.
Will I continue with the series: Yes but I listen to audio books so I will have to wait for the next one to be released

With his future plans crushed under a mountain of debt, Tanner enlists in the navy of his home star system of Archangel. But he hasn’t factored in the bullying shipmates, the civil war brewing on the border, or the space pirates. As Tanner begins basic training, the government ramps up its forces to confront the vicious raiders wreaking havoc throughout human space. Led by the complex and charismatic Captain Casey, the outlaws never let their egalitarian and democratic ideals get in the way of a little murder or mayhem. Assigned to the front lines, Tanner learns there’s only one way to deal with his ruthless foes, cruel comrades, and the unforgiving void of space. He’ll have to get up close and personal." Ascend Online by Luke Chmilenko - "It's time to be the hero you've always wanted to be. Realizing that this game is nothing like he's ever played before, Marcus is swept up into a whirlwind of adventure as he struggles to defend his new home, quickly finding that marauding goblins are the least of his problems." Cinnamon Bun: A Wholesome LitRPG by RavensDagger - "The world called out for a hero to purge it of a great evil. It received Broccoli Bunch, explorer, expert cleaner, occasional ghost-buster, and full time Cinnamon Bun. Features include: Talking enemies into becoming friends Hugging menu boxes Awesome overpowered skills (such as Cleaning, and Gardening) And more adventure than you could shake a stick at!" Steam Legion by Evan Currie - "The Library would not burn. Dyna of Sparta would not allow it, on her life and her ancestors she so swore. An Epic adventure set during the Early Roman Empire's era of expansion and unrest. Steam Legion develops from a real historical crossroads and explodes out in a new direction, derailing our history centuries before the first railroads were invented. When the revolts against the Empire reach the city of Alexandria, a small cadre of Legionnaires find themselves thrust into a revolution not of religion but of technology. Watch as Dyna of Sparta, Heron of Alexandria, and those who stand with them forge a new path to the future. Epic military action mixed with sparkling and memorable characters brings Legion to life, while forgotten technologies of our own distant past provide hope in an uncertain world. Watch and learn as Dyna of Sparta steps out of the Ivory Tower of the Library and into the sandals of her ancestors, blade in hand, to defend that which had become her life." Spellmonger by Terry Mancour - "Minalan gave up a promising career as a professional warmage to live the quiet life of a village spellmonger in the remote mountain valley of Boval. It was a peaceful, beautiful little fief, far from the dangerous feudal petty squabbles of the Five Duchies, on the world of Callidore. There were cows. Lots of cows. And cheese. For six months things went well: he found a quaint little shop, befriended the local lord, the village folk loved him, he found a sharp young apprentice to help out, and best yet, he met a comely young widow with the prettiest eyes . . . Then one night Minalan is forced to pick up his mageblade again to defend his adopted home from the vanguard of an army of goblins – gurvani, they call themselves – bent on a genocidal crusade against all mankind. And that was the good news. The bad news was that their shamans were armed with more magical power than has been seen since the days of the ancient Imperial Magocracy – and their leader, a mysterious, vengeful force of hate and dark magic, is headed directly to Boval Vale, along with a massive invading army of gurvani. The good people of Boval and their spellmonger have only one choice: to hole up in the over-sized Boval Castle and hope they can endure a siege against hundreds of thousands of goblins. When the people look to him for hope, Minalan does his best, but the odds are depressing: there are multitudes of goblins, and they want Boval Vale as a staging ground for a vengeful invasion of the whole Five Duchies. Add to his troubles a jealous rival mage, a motley band of mercenaries, a delusional liege lord who insists victory is at hand despite the hordes at his door, a dour castellan, a moody, pregnant girlfriend and a catty ex-girlfriend who specializes in sex magic - all trapped in a stinking, besieged castle with no hope of rescue, and you’ll understand why Minalan is willing to take his chances with the goblins. All that stands between the gurvani horde and the people of the Five Duchies is one tired, overwhelmed baker’s son who wanted nothing more than to be a simple village spellmonger." Perilous Waif by E William Brown - "My name is Alice Long, and I’ve always known I was different. When I was little I used to climb up to the highest branches of the housetree at night, and watch the starships docking at the orbital stations high above. Forty meters off the ground, watching ships thirty thousand kilometers overhead, with senses that could pick out radar pings and comm chatter as easily as the ships themselves. It all seemed perfectly natural at the time. There were other kids with mods at the orphanage, but nothing like that. I learned fast to downplay my abilities, keep my mouth shut and try to blend in. Even as a kid I knew not to trust the Matrons. What would they do, if they realized the Adjustments that were supposed to make me a meek little herd animal didn’t do anything? Then I messed up, and gave myself away. Now I’m on the run, hoping against hope that the Matrons won’t try too hard to find me. Hoping to survive all the awful things that can happen to a girl on her own in space. Kidnappers, slavers, pirates and yakuza - no matter where I go, trouble always seems to find me. Good thing I’m not as helpless as I look."

[ Memery ] Get to Know Me :: Whoa! The Player!
Tumblr media
Rules: Always post the rules. Tag 11 new people you’d like to know better.
1. Dogs or Cats?
I love animals of every shape and size, but for convenience’s sake I love cats. They’re very independent, don’t need a lot of tending (except when they tell you) but still love you unconditionally and give you head-bonkin’s to remind you so.
2. YouTube celebrities or normal celebrities?
Keanu Reeves.  I think that’s an acceptable answer.  3. If you could live anywhere where would that be?
I think I’d try living in France. Not only do they have the world’s best healthcare system according to the World Health Organization, they seem to make it a point to have a healthy work-life balance. Or at least it seems so from an outsider’s view.
4. Disney or DreamWorks?
DreamWorks, definitely!
5. Favourite childhood TV show?
Despite my previous answer, Disney’s Gargoyles remains one of my most favorite TV shows/cartoon serials ever. 6. The movie you’re looking forward to most in 2020?
I can’t really think of anything coming out next year off the top of my head.  Wonder Woman 1982 or whatever, maybe?
7. Favourite book you read in 2019?
Terry Mancour’s Spellmonger. It’s been a refreshing take on magic-users and magic. No doddering old wizards here!
8. Marvel or DC?
I enjoy the MCU movies because they have the formula down for making a generally satisfying movie / series. I only love DC for Wonder Woman. 9. If you choose Marvel favourite member of the X-Men? If you choose DC favourite Justice League member Favorite X-Man:  Gambit. I don’t really have much of a reason, save that I always adored the Gambit/Rogue storyline(s). I haven’t kept up with comics in forever, though, so take that with a grain of salt.
10. Night or Day?
I am the terror that flaps in the night.
11. Favourite Pokemon?
I.. actually don’t do the Pokemon thing.  If I had to pick one just off of what little I know?  Uh... Mewtwo. He looks neat.
12. Top 5 bands:
1.) Kamelot         2.) Nightwish 3.) Within Temptation 4.) Epica 5.) Eluvitie (Yes, I really like symphonic metal.)
13. Top 10 books. 1.) Daughter of the Lion by Jennifer Roberson 2.) Dragonlance: Chronicles by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman 3.) Redwall by Brian Jacques 4.) The Forever King by Warren Murphy and Molly Cochran 5.) The Last Herald-Mage by Mercedes Lackey 6.) Bedlam’s Bard by Mercedes Lackey 7.) The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher 8.) Watership Down by Richard Adams 9.) The Half-Blood Chronicles by Andre Norton 10.) The Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling 14. Top 4 movies
1.) Dragonheart 2.) The Lord of the Rings (Extended Editions) 3.) The Greatest Showman 4.) The Matrix Trilogy 5.) The Princess Bride
15. America or Europe?
I suppose I have to say America, since I’ve never been to Europe. As much as I’d like to travel, my health doesn’t really allow for it.  :( 16. Tumblr or Twitter?
Hnnngh. I don’t like either platform because neither are user-friendly. It took me forever to learn how to do stuff on Tumblr, BUT -- all you wonderful people are here -- so I’d have to say Tumblr just because of you guys.
17. Pro-choice or Pro-life?
Pro-choice.
18. Favourite YouTuber?
Am I allowed to say Critical Role? Cuz that’s, like, the only thing I watch on Youtube.
19. Favourite author ?
Ugh. Hard one. But I have always admired Margaret Weis.
20. Tea or Coffee?
Tea, all day long, all day, every day. I’m from the South, man, it’s allowed.
21. OTP ?
Deedlit and Parn from Record of Lodoss War.
22. Do you play an instrument/sing ?
I played baritone in high school, but haven’t played anything since. I suppose I still could, once I re-learned the fingerings.  Tagged by @sola-ffxiv :: Thank you, lovely!  :D Tagging The Three Caballeros: @yokasaris, @eligos-venator, @cahli-tia @vivalaezra :: More homework! No newbie follower tags because I’m not sure new people would want to answer questions from some rando. However, if YOU are reading this, aren’t tagged, and want to play along, please do!  Just flag me in the tags so I can come and read!  ^_^
