Meet a New Generation of Black American ‘Cowboys’
With these images, photographer Kennedi Carter smashes an age-old stereotype: Cowboys aren’t all white men on horses, battling Indigenous people.
— Story and Photographs By Kennedi Carter | July 18, 2023
Tumblr media
Doniyel Hooker bought her horse, Chance, in 2018. Whenever possible, Hooker, a math and science teacher, brings Chance to her elementary school to provide new experiences for her students. She’s ridden Chance on trails and even through the French Quarter of New Orleans.
The first time I saw a Black horseman, I was maybe six years old. I’m 24 now, grew up in the suburbs of Durham, North Carolina, but my mother’s family is from Dallas, and we’d drive back to visit. I remember this as one of those things where you’re chilling in the back seat, you see something crazy, your head does a complete 180. Cowboys! The white-man-on-a-horse archetype; battles with Indigenous people: That’s what I was most familiar with, from going to the movies with my grandfathers. So about five years ago, as I began to photograph on film, I thought it would be very interesting to turn that cowboy narrative inside out a bit. It’s always important to expand the narrow confines of what we perceive to be American culture, and how we as Black people sit inside it.
I’ve had a whirlpool of feelings, being a witness to these people. There’s a rich history of Black American cowboys, but for my work I’ve used the word “equestrian”—more inclusive now, I think. For a long time I observed from the ground, asking equestrians whether I could photograph them; I’d never ridden a horse myself until I climbed onto one while visiting trainer Silas Plummer outside New Orleans. Did I feel fully comfortable or at home? No. I thought a lot about not falling off. But in the Louisiana town where my grandfather was born, his sharecropper family didn’t have cars, so one assumes they were using horses or mules to get around. That was beautiful to circle back to, very ancestral.
And my biggest takeaway, working with all the equestrians, is just how alive they feel when they’re on a horse. There’s a freedom that comes from interacting with animals, with nature, with the land. This is what one form of that freedom looks like.

Horse trainer Silas Plummer holds Kash outside Child’s Arena stables in Bridge City, Louisiana. From wranglers to rodeo riders to jockeys, Black men and women have made their mark in many areas of horsemanship. In the United States, for example, an estimated one in four cowboys in the late 19th century was Black.

MaLana Lewis first rode a horse at age five during a camping trip. Her family later got her into barrel racing classes, and she has collected 24 first-place ribbons with her horse, Star. This photograph was taken in 2020, when Lewis was nine.

In the early 1900s, Black communities held festivals and rodeos in cattle country across various southern states. Here a group of cowhands show off their steeds at the Negro State Fair on the Fannin County Fairgrounds north of Bonham, Texas, in 1911. The annual event involved four days of parades, music, and rodeos. Racers also competed for prizes of $2 to $50. Courtesy of Erwin E. Trigger was Vinsha Torain’s first horse, and the two have ridden together since the college student was 13. Torain helps run the family ranch, started by her grandfather, in Siler City, North Carolina, and also heads Torain Ranch’s riding club, composed mainly of Black women.

5 Things You Need To Know Before Moving to Texas
Tumblr media
The Lone Star State is getting less and less lonely these days. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, “from 2000 to 2022, the state gained 9,085,073 residents, more than any other state and almost 3 million more than Florida, the next largest-gaining state.” If you’re one of those new residents—or you’re considering a move to Texas—it helps to know a few things to make the transition easier. And we’re here to help. From the weather and traffic to best places to eat and safest neighborhoods, it helps to get a lay of the land before moving to Texas from another state. Here are 5 things you need to know before moving to Texas. 1. Don’t Believe the Stereotypes It’s not all cattle and half-gallon hats around here. Nor is it a desert landscape. And no, everyone does not talk in a Southwestern accent. Once you’re here, you’ll quickly realize that Texas is much different than the impression the rest of the country (and the world) has on us. There’s more greenery, art districts and world-class restaurants than we’re given credit for, as well as a diverse mix of people. Texas has been changing for some time and will continue to evolve in the future as our population grows. 2. Cars Are Must-Haves  The one stereotype you should believe is that everything is bigger in Texas. Including the state itself! As the second-largest state by area, you can be driving for half a day and still be in Texas. Add in the construction and rising traffic and it’s easy to see how vehicles are a must-own for residents. If you live in an area like New York City or somewhere else where cars are optional, this is a lifestyle shift to be aware of! 3. Local Eats Are the Best Most of the visitors and tourists go to chain restaurants, but locals know the best spots to eat are often smaller, localized establishments. Especially for barbecue, Tex-Mex and other popular regional fare, you’re better off choosing a place you’ve never heard of than one of the bigger names. Whether in Dallas-Fort Worth, Austin, San Antonio or Houston, local eats are the best. 4. There’s More to Do Than You Might Think From an abundance of professional sports teams to thriving downtowns in several major metropolitan areas, there’s plenty to do in Texas. Outsiders might think there is nothing to do, since much of Texas features more land than population, but this is another stereotype you shouldn’t believe. From parks, hiking trails and state parks to world-class museums, theme parks and more, you’ll be entertained if you get out there and explore. 5. Prepare to Work on Your Flexibility A couple of the negatives associated with Texas are the construction and weather. The former is to be expected as the population grows and urban development increases, but if you’re flexible with the routes you take, it can be manageable. The unexpected weather is another element to consider, as there are often double-digit temperature changes most days and storms/tornadoes can pop up quickly. But all of this helps our residents be more flexible and go with the flow. If you’re considering a move to Texas, we’d love to show you why we’re a moving company you can trust. hi! im having some trouble figuring out some things about my world. The main country of the story like a post calamity old west, filled with cowboy gangs that occupy turf. But there are also people in towns within the country that have nothing to do with the gangs. My issue is im having trouble figuring out how the two sides would interact, and how the people in the towns would avoid getting raided every day.
Tex: Ah. Well, cowboys... don't do the raiding thing, traditionally - it's actually a job as a cattle herder and sometimes horse wrangler that worked on a ranch. The original cowboys were vaqueros of the Iberian Peninsula. It's a very old cultural tradition, which is typified by doing cattle - and other animals as necessary - herding on horseback. Technically speaking, the Iberian roots refer to a dressage style of the region, known as doma vaquera (aka "Western dressage" or "cowherd style", DressageToday, which is different from the horsemanship style of doma clásica (aka haute école, Wikipedia in Spanish).
I find the phrase "post calamity old west" very interesting; what about the Old West drew you toward it for a post-calamity setting? It may not have looked like the US east of the Mississippi, but for the most part the frontier was highly oriented around entrepreneurialism, egalitarianism, and self-sufficiency - Manifest Destiny's impact on westward expansion is popularly said to have shaped the roots of American culture, distinct from European. Society in the frontier wasn't highly stratified like in the original colonies, but it was quick to develop in something that reflected the friction with the Native Americans, the aggressive politicking that was the developing legislative landscape, and the shift from financial modesty to the dream of wealth.
Cowboys were incredibly important to frontier culture, as cattleherding [and horse... everything ( 1  2  3  4  5 ) were a core component of the frontier economy. Settlers made up another core component, and between the two of them - under Manifest Destiny's set of goals - American law and government was further developed. The building of the railroads to connect east and west coasts had major help from cowboys and their ability to wrangle horses for use in railroad construction, something that helped put the US higher on the international stage in terms of their trading power. Being able to negotiate literally new trade routes, as well as govern them, is a potent draw for any society as it enables them to have a steady source of income to develop themselves further. Since cowboys were an integral part of this, the culture surrounding them was built up accordingly.
It's important to highlight that the Old West was planned, inasmuch as territorial expansion on other people's property can be. As the population of an area grew, and went through the formal procedures of becoming towns, cities, and states (there were some hiccups, as evidenced by the Kansas-Nebraska Act), the amount of law enforcers grew accordingly. In the beginning sheriffs and others were sparse compared to their big city relatives in the more developed regions of the US, and as such they were spread thin.
What was... maybe not unique to the era and region, but perhaps distinctive, is the fine line between "law-abiding" and "not law-abiding". Since the US was galloping toward expanding its territory and defending it (pun wholly intended), picking up the slack as a representative of the US government could be financially beneficial. Bounties could be put out on criminals - whose crimes were frequently theft of cattle and horses when not cash and other goods - and deals were frequently struck with not only cowboys but whichever criminal was currently in the good graces of the local sheriff/town as a whole.
Outlaws, also known as lawmen (sometimes law-abiding!), badmen, pistoleers, pistoleros, rustlers (a particular occupation), and gunslingers (the last one a post-era name suited for Hollywood), are the byproduct of westward expansion in the US. Like cowboys and law enforcement, they had a spot in their society as, literally, a criminal occupation that varied in how far from the law they operated (entrepreneurship, if technically of a different tone than homesteaders and other settlers). Because of the contemporary in situ development of law, criminals could be sheriffs and sheriffs could be criminals.
This lack of stratification that would typically define respectability is what made the American frontier the "Wild" West, not necessarily the lack of physical infrastructure. The US is big, and matching the technology of the East Coast and Europe took a lot of resources, both physical and financial, and many routes were taken to achieve the singular goal of fulfilling the US' vision of becoming a power player in the world stage.
Such an apparent lawlessness was dealt with by using a form of equality, something best said by the adage "if catapults are outlawed, then only outlaws shall have catapults". The multiple layers of politics - from Native Americans to war with other nations and neighbors to quite simply the wildlife - meant that firearms were a staple of settlers, ranchers, Pony Express riders, and stagecoach travelers that had to deal with "the wild" (something that notably wasn't allowed within town limits as a demarcation of civilization). If you want to talk about raiding, the Bleeding Kansas crisis is your best bet to see how the Old West handled such things.
Combining those two above aspects should give you greater perspective on social dynamics of law vs lawless, as well as how the social circles overlapped. The closest I could find to the modern gang war analogue would be range wars, with notable examples including the Johnson County War, Stuart's Stranglers, and Sheep Wars that fit the parameters of cowboys in territorial disputes during the Old West era and region.
I think you might be particularly interested in the Cochise County Cowboys, as a very early form of American crime syndicate during the time when "cowboy" and "rustler" were mostly interchangeable. They're a part of the family feuds in the United States, many of which occur during the time period and in the region of the Old West.
Below (Mod Miri Note: at the end of the post) is a list gives details of the minutiae I haven't covered, which round out the setting of the Old West, up to the completion of the First Transcontinental Railroad which effectively ended the era - but not quite to the American Civil War.
Feral: Everything Tex said. Also...
Something else to consider about the real Old West and the sociopolitical dynamics that came with it is that the Old West was happening during a time of class warfare. And I do mean warfare. An incredible amount of the land was not owned by the people living there. It was owned by the railroad companies, banks, and absentee speculators. Most farmers in the 19th century were tenant farmers, who could be evicted for crop failure - evictions to be carried by the local sheriff. Over a thousand people died constructing the transcontinental railroads, and running the railroads was also a very dangerous occupation. Strikes were happening a lot and the Pinkertons were known to actually battle striking workers. The point of this is to say that the common people might not have had as much of an issue with bandits who targeted banks or trains or fought with sheriffs and security agents. Jesse James was a folk hero who is given attributes of a Robin Hood figure, even though there's no evidence he gave away any of his loot - he did, however, steal from the rich and that might have been good enough for some.
Now you ask how the bandits (or cowboys - is that meant as a reference to the Gunfight at OK Corral? if so, it's a proper noun - Cowboys was the name of the specific gang) would interact with the townspeople. I see 2 general models of this.
Model 1: the towns are part of the territories which are "protected" by the gangs that control the territories. So, gangs wouldn't be attacking their own towns; they'd be attacking each others. And likely trading with their own.
Model 2: the towns are no-man's land on the border of territories and trade equally with the bandits (this model would probably require a very strong law enforcement presence). And trade is a really important thing to consider - you can't eat money. Whatever the bandits steal from banks, train cars, etc, they need to get food with it. And given the very real poverty in the Old West, stealing food outright off farms was a very good way to get a huge posse out for your blood.
If you're not already familiar with Westerns, try some out. Tombstone is a favorite of mine (though it is absolutely completely historically inaccurate). Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid is a classic. For a more "modern" option, Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy is a must-read. Even when they're inaccurate, they capture the feeling that draws people to the mythology of the Old West, even when reimagined as post-apocalyptic.
And speaking of the post-apocalyptic West, you're probably very familiar with the Joss Whedon show Firefly and Stephen King's Gunslinger, but if you haven't taken the time, really study them. Because the world building, especially in terms of the balance of chaos and order, are wonderful, and again, they capture that feeling of Westerns that keep people coming back. "Train Job," "Bushwacked," and "Heart of Gold" may be particularly helpful episodes for you.

The story of a shooting in Atlanta
THE last day of Diane McIver’s life began at the ranch she shared with her husband Claud “Tex” McIver near Eatonton, Georgia. It is a handsome property, with a large pond in front of the house, longhorn cattle, horses in a paddock, horse-head statuary at the gates. The McIvers, says Howard Sills, the local sheriff, were ornaments of the community: she was “the life of the party”, he “a gentleman” with “consummate manners”. On that Sunday—September 25th last year—they played golf on a pine-lined course beside Lake Oconee, a favourite playground of well-to-do Atlantans. Mrs McIver, a fine golfer, was on good form. They stopped at a steakhouse next to the highway for what would be her last meal, then headed into the city.
They were on the way to their condominium in a swanky tower in Buckhead, one of Atlanta’s fanciest neighbourhoods. Mrs McIver, who was 63 and president of a marketing firm, had come a long way from her hard-up childhood in Alabama. She married Mr McIver, now 74 and, until recently, a partner in an employment-law firm, in 2005. Originally from Texas, after 50 years in Georgia he was well-connected in local politics. Subsequent events that evening are disputed, in a case that has come to encapsulate the city’s rifts and problems, including race, elitism and guns. Appropriately, it also involves Atlanta’s main bugbear: traffic.
The McIvers’ car was being driven by their friend, Patricia Carter, known as Dani Jo. Mrs McIver was in the front passenger seat, her husband sitting behind her. They hit a jam on what Atlantans call the downtown connector, a choke-point in the heart of the city where two interstates converge. Mr McIver had been dozing; waking as they left the highway, he became alarmed and retrieved a revolver that was kept in the car’s central console. A few minutes later, near Piedmont Park, Atlantans’ favourite park, the gun went off—accidentally, Mr McIver says. The bullet struck his wife. She died in surgery a few hours later.
If the outline is clear, the details are blurry. Initially, for example, Charles Crane, then a spokesman for Mr McIver, said he took out the gun in part out of concern over recent Black Lives Matter protests nearby, an explanation that irked some black politicians. Mr Crane also said the bullet was fired when the car struck a bump in the road. Both details have been disavowed by Mr McIver and his team: there was no bump, they clarified, nor any worry about Black Lives Matter. Instead he was discomforted by the area in which the party found itself when it detoured away from the congestion. (Homeless people, another doleful feature of Atlanta life, often loiter near that exit.) In Mr McIver’s account, he fell asleep again, awoke suddenly near the park, and the gun discharged.
The authorities’ view of the case has evolved, too. In December, after murmurs about their tardiness, Atlanta police charged Mr McIver with involuntary manslaughter and reckless conduct, charges suggesting that they, too, considered the death an accident. Mr McIver was released on bond. The district attorney’s office, however, had other ideas. It launched a search for what it alleged was Diane McIver’s secret will, which it accused Mr McIver of concealing. In court documents, Paul Howard, the DA, argued that the elusive will was “likely evidence of the motive in her death”. In April a grand jury was persuaded to elevate the charges to murder, adding several counts of interfering with witnesses, namely the spokesman, Mr Crane, and Ms Carter, the driver. The indictment alleges that Mr McIver told her to say she had not been present when the shooting occurred.
By then, he was in jail. The terms of his bond forbade guns, but a search for documents in his condo turned up a pistol in his sock drawer; his lawyers insinuated that it had been planted, but the judge was unimpressed. Later efforts to secure his release, pending trial, have been thwarted in part by prosecutors’ claims that Mr McIver—who served on the state election board, among other accolades—tried to sway the case from his cell. “I believe that this defendant, he is dangerous,” Mr Howard told the judge during a recent skirmish over whether Mr McIver was receiving preferential treatment. In an earlier clash, the DA tried and failed to prevent estate auctions of the dead woman’s clothes and jewellery. Unshaven, these days, and hangdog, glasses clipped to his smock, Mr McIver has clutched a bible as he shuffles into court.
Days in court
He denies meddling and has pleaded not guilty to all charges. He says he had no motive, financial or otherwise, to kill his wife; his team is adamant that the secret will is a fiction. “It was the perfect marriage,” Mr McIver said in a jailhouse TV interview. “He seemed very doting,” corroborates Mr Sills, the rural sheriff, who is not involved in the inquiry. Defence lawyers denounce what they see as “a trophy prosecution”, accusing the DA of withholding testimony that the shooting was an accident. That is said to have come from an Atlanta detective and Ms Carter (though her lawyer has said that she did not see what happened in the back seat). Also, most explosively, from the victim herself: a doctor who treated Mrs McIver recalled that she “said it was an accident without me prompting”.
The trial is scheduled for October. For now Mr McIver is confined behind the meshed windows of a squat, redbrick jail in Alpharetta, north of Atlanta. Still, amid the fug, a central element is stark and clear: the gun that killed Mrs McIver. Her husband had a lot of firearms, prosecutors note. Around 35 were taken from the ranch for safekeeping by Mr Sills, though “Here,” he says, “that’s not a lot of guns.” The revolvers that decorate the chandelier in the couple’s barn are replicas, he says. Mr McIver’s lawyers insist two old incidents that have come to light are irrelevant. In one, he let off a shot to scare a buzzard for a Buckhead neighbour; in the other, in 1990, he was indicted after firing in the vicinity of a carload of teenagers, in self-defence, he maintained. They settled out of court.
Keeping a gun in a car, as the McIvers did, is legal in Georgia, his team observes. (Whether it is wise is debatable: by one count, Atlanta leads the nation in guns stolen from vehicles.) And Mr McIver was well-apprised of the need for caution. Last summer he was appointed to an advisory role on the American Bar Association’s Standing Committee on Gun Violence.

Big Tex
We went to the Texas State Fair on Sunday. Biggest in the country- and way more wholesome than we were all expecting. Really well organized, very clean and huge with a crowd that was much better looking than the ones at Disney. There were lots of carnival rides and games but they seemed like they were in very good shape and no real low life carny types. It was really a pleasure but at the same time a little disappointing in how nice it was!
We ate chicken fried bacon, fried Philly cheesesteaks, fried dulce de leche cheesecake with Nutella, fried Reeses, French fries, and red velvet funnel cake (fried dough) and three non fried items- this torta thing, water and beer. The fried options were overwhelming but the one thing we really wanted but didn’t see (although it was definitely there somewhere) was fried butter.
We saw cars and hot tubs and mattresses and tractors and tons of other stuff for sale. We watched cloggers and country music performers and pig races (actually a real highlight and weirdly not G’s first pig races). We looked at prize winning cattle and pigs and goats and rabbits. And we took lots of pictures in front of Big Tex- the 55 foot cowboy that has been presiding over the fair for over 60 years (interestingly, in 2012 he caught fire but was rebuilt).
No rides or games (we spent all our tickets on food) but we really had a great time!
Tex Mex for dinner at Chuy’s (a chain but very, very good- great recommendation Jason). Amazing how much spicer the food is down here!

Parts of a ‘Virtual’ Border Wall, Built With the Tech Behind Driverless Cars
DEL RIO, Tex. — In this tiny town at the edge of South Texas brush country, a black steel fence runs along the Mexican border. About 15 feet high and topped by small metal spires that bend toward Mexico, it stretches west from a Border Patrol checkpoint for about a mile and a half. Then it stops.
Where the fence ends, a creek snakes off the Rio Grande, up through a private ranch where cattle…
