I’ve been here in Malaysia for close to four months now, and I’ve been studiously trying to learn the language because I feel that it adds depth and texture to how I perceive and experience my life here. Words give shape to thoughts and emotions, and whenever I am able to attach a Malay word to my thoughts and emotions, it somehow feels like I am experiencing them for the first time.
Whenever I look at the KL sunset I think, “That’s merah” - red. Whenever I eat something delicious, I think, “Sedap.” Whenever it’s hot outside, which is everyday, I think, “Panas.”
When my family visited me here in KL last February, I took my brothers out to eat late dinner at a local restaurant. I was super proud of myself when I ordered food in Bahasa Malaysia. “Makan sini, dua ayam goreng, satu nasi goreng, satu nasi putih, satu mee goreng, tiga kopi.” My brothers were impressed, and I silently thanked my local friends for teaching me how to order the previous week.
After my family went back to the Philippines, I came home from work one night and I thought “Saya penat dan sedih” - I am tired and lonely. “Sakit hati” - my heart ached. For my family, for my friends, for my dog.
I learned that when speaking with friends, you refer to yourself as “aku” instead of “saya,” and to the other person as “kau” instead of “awak” because it’s more casual that way. “Saya” and “awak” are reserved for polite conversations, and of course I would take any chance I can to be impolite with friends. But when a local friend gifted me with baju kebaya, a traditional outfit in Malaysia and other Southeast Asian countries, for Hari Raya, “Saya terenstuh” - I was touched. I couldn’t bring myself to think “Aku tersentuh” because it felt rough, and the emotion that welled inside me that time was just so soft.
It hasn’t been easy for me living in a foreign country.  Being away from my family and everything I’ve known my whole life. And yet, “Aku rasa gembira” - I feel happy. I AM happy. Sini dan sekarang. Here and now. Sebab - because - for the first time in years, aku boleh rasa. Aku rasa hidup. I can feel. And I feel alive.
I just need more words to describe this new way of life.

Experimental cooking: an example
We had leftover oyster mushrooms. This is where it escalated. We had had potatoes, pasta, rice, and couscous, and, because I love to change things up, now I wanted noodles. Quinoa had been fine too, but we had leftover oyster mushrooms... so...
First I baked some sesame seeds. Then I made a spice-mix: pepper, salt, chili powder, paprika powder, five spice. Quantities to taste… some in moderation; five spice is potent. That, I added to some ground beef with an egg, and bread-crumbs till moist yet malleable.
Meanwhile the sesame seed skillet was still hot, so I tossed some vine tomatoes in and let them dry fry. I would've used the oven but I was too busy darting to and fro in the kitchen.
Experimental cooking is chaotic.
After I kneaded the ground beef into sausages, I seared them in a casserole, and when they were done all round I took them out of the pot. To rest, so they say.
Then, in those spice and meat infused juices I tossed a chopped onion, one minced clove of garlic, and shredded oyster mushrooms to soak up the flavours.
Oh! Meanwhile the Haricot Verts were cooking with two stalks of chopped celery I had lying around (celery takes too much time to cook until softened, stir frying, if you'd ask me... I cheated on that, because I was already frying garlic and mushrooms when I found out I had them).
So while that was boiling, I added two pointed peppers, chopped — or rather, sliced in all kinds of different sizes, for different textures — and added those to the mix in the (stir) frying pot.
Took the hari's and celery out after 10 minutes, while the rest had fried in the other pan, dumped the greens in a bowl to prevent them from cooking further.
Then, the magic happened with a teaspoon of Sambal Ulek, a glug of soy sauce, a big teaspoon of miso paste, and a tablespoon of Tahini. By this point I was dancing. Whistling songs. A splash of honey. And after some dashing and stir-frying, a last minute thumb-sized piece of ginger, grated.
Then, I reintroduced the beef sausages, along with the hari's and celery. Put the lid on the top and reduced the temperature to retaining / regaining heat.
I cooked the noodles with 3/4th of a beef stock cube I had lying around. 4 minutes. This was my cigarette break after darting around for the time, cooking. The kitchen was an utter mess.
Then, I threw it all together, except for the tomatoes (used as garnishing (umami bombs)).
Success.

My piece from yesterday’s Sketchwalk at Geylang Serai, a popular Malay / Muslim enclave in the mid-eastern part of Singapore.
Ramadan is about over and Hari Raya (translated: Big Day; celebrating the end of Ramadan) is around the corner, and this part of town is usually teeming with atmosphere and festivities this time of the year.
While most of our sketchers were sketching up Malay-inspired architecture across the street, Ken and I decided to capture some favorite Malay eats – a big part of the Hari Raya festivities, and certainly Singapore Malay Culture.
This stall (operating since 1985) is a very popular Malay dessert place selling Putu Piring, a Kueh (steamed rice cake) with brown palm sugar (Gula Melaka) fillings, sprinkled with freshly grated coconut, usually served on a tiny piece of banana leaf. It reminds me a lot of the Chinese Kueh Tu-Tu.
One bite into the steamy, soft and slightly powdery and bland exterior, and you will be greeted with an explosion of nuanced, textured sweetness, and that combination is just heavenly… and I don’t even have a sweet tooth. 😂
The other sweet delights on the table I bought from the neighboring stalls; the Putu Piring was the star.
An urban sketcher at heart, I could not help but also capture the shopfront, with dedicated kak-kaks (older sisters) and makciks (older ladies / moms) hard at work churning out Kueh after Kueh.
Wonderful hangout with my bros Ken and Alvin sketching up these sweet delights.

I was (and still sort of am) in a bad mood. So I drew what I imagine Nemu’s zanpakutō spirit would look like! This is related to my Captain Nemu posts so if you want a smidge more context you can check those out.
Tumblr media
It’s her!! It’s Harihana!!
Tumblr media
I tried to write the kanji for Harihana (玻璃花) and sort of succeeded. Yeah this is what I imagine Harihana looks like!! I’m not entirely sure why, it just sort of came to me. Maybe the mix of ‘waterlily/flower aspect of the name’ and ‘butterfly inspirations to match Mayuri’s zanpakutō’ just sort of came to my mind as a flower fairy? I’m not usually a super big fan of humanoid zanpakutō spirits but I just got attached to this design I guess :) She was super inspired by Puck from Berserk because they’re my favourite character from that series so far lmao.
Tumblr media
Another Harihana, this time bigger!! I wanted to have a little design of what would happen if she magnified herself using her own ability- maybe to protect Nemu from someone. I added the little crystals at the bottom and extended the leaves/flower petals to show the,,, magnification, idk. It looked cool. (Also her wings are probably more translucent but I didn’t feel like drawing Nemu’s full body behind her lmao).
Tumblr media
Some design notes!
Harihana is a little flower fairy and I wanted it to be a little less basic than like, a flower-themed girl, so her skin is leaf. That’s what the vein-ish pattern on her face/arms is. Literal flower fairy.
The little things in her head-leaf-dip are quartz gems! I wanted to reference the Hari part of her name more, so I added little gemstones in there!
Her flower skirt is inspired by a waterlily/lotus which is a motif I gave Nemu’s zanpakutō. They could be crystalized or just normal, I can’t really decide- both would look good probably (I’m just bad at drawing crystal textures-)
I was debating whether to give Harihana dragonfly or butterfly wings, but then I remembered that Ashisogi Jizō is a little caterpillar, so I have her butterfly wings to match :)
She has little shine marks around her at all times because she is glittering constantly :) Just a blinding little fairy :)
Tumblr media
This was what popped to mind when I thought about Harihana’s design lmao- just a bastard little fairy tempting Nemu to be a little apeshit, as a treat. Also- I drew her sword! I tried to make the tsuba look like a little flower because I thought it’d be cute, and I wanted a super long ribbon because it’s pretty.
That’s it!! I just wanted to share my little sketches!! Because I got emotionally attached to Nemu and her weird little sword fairy!!

Hello there sir! I am Buggy, one of the agents from the agency! I have a small question for you, or two actually
What is your favorite candy?
And what is your least favorite food? Not like allergic but just something you think tastes horrible
Not asking because of any halloween tricks or treats of anything im just curious yep no schemes at all!
Tumblr media
"Oh! What a fun question.
I haven't thought of my favourite sweets in a long time. Not since I was a teenager, I think. Very nostalgic.
I remember the White Rabbit milk lollies. They have a nice edible rice paper wrapper. Gula-Gula Udang is similar in that sense. Not sure if either is my favourite though... there's too much to choose from. I always liked the cartoons on Kandos Chocolates...and Hawthorn Flakes were always quite fun.
Tumblr media
Hm... But Iced Gem Biscuits were the best. I don't really know if they count as a "Candy" since they're half biscuit. But I always ate the meringe icing first - sometimes throwing the the biscuit away entirely. Surely that counts!
If Halloween is anything like Hari Raya, well, I know what I'd look forward to. Food for thought for our handouts too. I'll be happy to share these Singaporean Sweets with you all!
Tumblr media
As for my least favourite food. That's far easier.
The Meat Pie. Of the British or Australian/New Zealand type, doesn't matter. They're the same to me.
Tumblr media
What a sorry excuse for a pastry. The gravy is thick with nothing but fat. Where's the flavour? The seasoning? I can't even detect what kind of animal I am putting in my mouth. And that texture...like ground up rubber lathered in some sort of meaty butter, and sprinkles of vague and dubious bone. Crunching into something that you don't even know and having to swallow it with fear of being rude. The soggy, slimy pastry that tries to contain the filling while it oozes out of the corners? It does nothing to save this food. No structural integrity, no flavour, horrible texture, I can't imagine anything worse than this. The nerve that the Australians have, putting tomato sauce on it as if that makes anything better.
I say, just have an Epok-Epok. That does everything a meat pie could ever wish to do. I know I got heated up there. I have every right to be angry about this. I appreciate that you've invited me to talk about this as it's bothered me for years.
I'm sure you won't use any of this information for schemes or mischief of any sort. Absolutely."
Kind regards,
Agent Flying Fox

I somehow came across your art and thought it was beautiful! The textures and compositions are simply amazing. What are you influenced or inspired by?
Hello ! First of all, thank you very much for your words! It means a lot to me! So I am inspired by many things! First of all people (who are not things), artists who have a lot of talent and whose work I like a lot like @lunpand or @la-chonga ! I also spend a lot of time on pinterest looking for different textures, I'm inspired by grunge style, dusty stuff, movie posters and concert posters too! I also like the work of the photographer Haris Nukem! Thanks again for your words! Have a great day!

sharing a snippet, because I enjoyed writing this
The rain stopped.
It had been days of rain - sometimes a downpour, sometimes a faint drizzle - but this was the first actually dry moment Hari had seen since they first stepped out of the caves. She straightened herself painstakingly, joints creaking, and raised her head to the breeze. Never mind the lack of sun; never mind the dark skies and leafless trees. The breeze was still the same.
She stood there for a minute to savour the feeling. The wind tickled her scalp underneath her hair, cold but clean. Around her lay rain-soaked rocks, faint traces of lichen still clinging to them. Not much living around these days.
The lamp on her forehead sent a beam ahead to illuminate a lone tree. A few pinecones still hung from its branches, although the needles were long gone. She smiled, good firewood those, then gasped as she looked down. There, at her feet, somehow still alive after all these years, a few mushrooms grew.
Hari drew closer, and lowered herself to the ground. Cautiously, she plucked a mushroom and turned it over to view its pores. It had been a long time, but those were ceps, all right.
She turned back to the entrance to the cave, where her granddaughter sat.
“Come on, Areta! We’re having a feast!"
Areta stumbled to her feet, face clearly showing her confusion.
“The first people to feel the touch of the wind in sixty years, we have to celebrate it! Mushrooms and game and oh, you don't even know what you've never had. As soon as they get back!”
“Isn't that.. oh, a waste?” Areta said. “What if we need that food?”
“My child. You have to celebrate when you can. If I've learned anything, it's that. You have to find reasons to celebrate. And today, it's the wind, and the mushrooms! We'll save them till Ash and Mara return, but together we will eat, and be joyful.”
-
Ash and Mara returned the next day to a warm fire lighting up the entrance to the cave, and Areta's flute music reverberating amongst the ravines. Ash paused when they first came in sight of Areta at the entrance, playing despite her broken arm.
He lifted his arm – weighed down by game – and greeted her. His voice reverberated against the mountainside, and he winced for a moment, then forgot it in his joy. Mara beside him was yelling too, and even tried to run down the hill to her sister, notwithstanding her laden pack, then went sliding helter-skelter down the hill. Areta was already scolding her for putting herself at risk, when they already had one person injured. Mara merely grinned. “Can I have my hug?”
Areta snorted, but moved in, then held an arm out to Ash too, who was still only halfway down the hill having taken the slower way (ie, the way that didn't end up covered in mud and at risk of bodily injury). He laughed.
“Some of us know what care is!” he yelled. “Give me a moment!”
She let him get to the bottom of the hill, but he was pulled into the hug before he'd had a chance to drop his pack, animals banging around him.
“Uh. You might not want dead rabbit on you?”
-
Mara lay sleepy in the blankets until a savoury aroma reached her. She could identify rabbit meat smoking, but there was something else there, something totally unfamiliar. Whatever it was, it smelled amazing.
She dragged herself upright and went out to the mouth of the cave. Areta and Ash were sitting next to the fire, talking softly, and Granny was still cooking. She doled out the food to each of them – fried algae-cakes, roasted rabbit meat, and some sort of shrivelled unfamiliar thing.
Ash poked at it. “Granny Hari, what are these?”
“Mushrooms!” she said with a huge grin. “I found us mushrooms!”
Mara tried one cautiously. The texture was odd, but the flavour came in an intense burst on her tongue, juices sparking through her mouth. She took another bite. “Granny, these are amazing!”
“What did I say? A feast, I said! This is our feast!”
And indeed, a feast it was.

A gift for Hari! Sora scurries over and presents him with a little plush lizard she made herself! It's soft and squishy and has kinda weird looking googly eyes but it was still cute!
Despite their involvement ( AND DUE TO HIS OWN INHIBITIONS ) he actually doesn’t receive too many gifts from Sora, prompting momentary hesitation as critical sapphire eyes analyze the gesture and object of interest. However, his stoicism decidedly softens as the plush is accepted with the utmost care to spare it from being nicked by his talons, cradled delicately between the pads of his fingertips as he tentatively squishes it... and feeling a sliver of delight at the textures present.
Tumblr media
“... This isn’t like you....“ HARI murmurs after a moment is spent inspecting the craftsmanship, before his gaze lifts to meet Sora’s with a degree of tenderness.
“... Did you make this yourself? It’s... cute...”

English Version
“Loosely Comrades” means comrades in coloring, which takes the theme of crayons or coloring, an agency where each individual is a piece of crayon-unique, colorful, which differs in color from one crayon to another. Here, ‘comrades’ are not just friends, but they are partners and family who will make all the crayons come together and become one beautiful color.
Loosely Comrades is a place where freedom of expression is valued. Each ‘crayon’ is free to scratch out its own color, creating patterns, textures, and nuances that cannot be replicated.
We believe that cooperation and a close relationship between ‘comrades’ can lead to an unexpected connection. Each crayon brings different shades of color to the palette, but when put together, they create a masterpiece or dazzling, beautiful colors.
Each day we continue to grow into a better person with closer relationships like a family. So, are you ready to pick up your crayons and join us in making new, more beautiful colors?
