Cardan really went from “you don’t belong here” to “marry me and become the queen of this land” to “hang on. I guess it’s best if I just banished you for a while. I’m sure you’d be impressed. Besides, I have to show my subjects what a just king I am and work things out with the Undersea. I know how smart you are, and I know you’ll find your way back home, and to me, my wife.”

I love everything about this scene between them.

Something dangerous sparks = we both realize we hate each other. We desire each other. We hate that we desire each other.

Kiss me again = punish me again for desiring you so. Kiss me until I’m sick of it = punish me so that I desire you no longer. If you’re the sickness, I suppose you can’t also be the cure = perhaps if desiring you is the sickness, having you kiss me can’t be much of a cure/(punishment)

Details are everything.

The way Jude can’t pretend away everything that mentally and emotionally affects her, the way she gets lost while thinking of Cardan. The way that others notice this and the sisters laugh. The way Taryn doesn’t, not because she thinks Jude is an idiot, but probably because she's worried the expression’s got something to do with Locke.

I love the way Cardan always hints at something to help Jude understand and see the bigger picture while also unsettling and challenging her.

Jude was brought up in a world which wasn’t hers. She learned the ways of the folk so well that she even thought like them and felt like them (like Cardan felt because of her: angry). Most of the time, she even behaved like them. The only thing holding her back (even if and when she doesn’t want it to) is her humanity.

She might be tuned to the folk’s ways, and she might even be better than them at times, but it’s just what it is; she isn’t one of them.

Taryn’s audacity for telling Jude,

It’s hit me just now that Prince Dain had his eyes on the general's bastard daughters for quite some time, especially on Jude, seeing as the owl-faced hob who'd delivered Jude her first task from the Court of Shadows was the same one whom Jude had confessed to about feeling tired of being powerless.
