wanna play the new games i finally caught after having them wishlisted for like 2-3 years. but instead I'm pushing 2000 hours on thelongdark and still winding down legacy saves from before the rebuild. I killed a moose with the revolver yesterday. I don't even have noisemakers. When I get to TFTFT it's going to be a whole other level of obsessive completionist shit for no reason it is simply not time to acquire new media

It’s unfortunate how elitist some players of this game are. The amount of times I’ve seen people on like Reddit and such be like “interloper is too easy if you don’t play on at least interloper you’re a little bitch baby. Here’s my ultra hardcore settings for people who aren’t pants-wetting pansies” is honestly so grody. Maybe it’s because I do only play on voyageur but like… the game has difficulty settings for a reason? If it was supposed to only be interloper, they would have made it only interloper. They literally went through the effort of making custom settings. If I want it to be super hard, I can make it super hard. If I want to make there be nothing but deer, rabbits and sunshine? They gave me that option for a reason.
Like don’t get me wrong, the expansion pass has had its issues. The updates were supposed to be every 8-10 weeks, which has not happened, and honestly, they didn’t do a very good job with the first content drop. I’m of the opinion that these things are fine and normal, but they’re legitimate complaints to have. IMO, the tale not being available in interloper objectively makes sense. One of the two big items you get in the final bunker of the tale is the “security chief’s rifle holster”. It’s a story item, but it would be useless and stupid to have in interloper because there are no rifles in that mode. And you don’t give a player a useless item for doing a huge, arduous task. To make it fit in interloper they’d need to rework all of that and make it a whole new thing.
Basically I think you’re totally right OP
ive a lot of the reception for signal void’s release has been negative from what i’ve seen anyway. particularly the comments on the youtube video, and most of them are upset about one thing: the fact that the tale isn’t available on interloper
more below the cut bc i assume im gonna be rambly lol

My brother pointed something out to me about the safehouse customization pictures they used in the dev diary: you can frame the photos you take in game. I can finally memorialize the one hundred and thirty three litres of water I have sitting in the train car in the muskeg (in case I get thirsty). Joyous day

to be fair, and I mean this with love, character writing has never been the hinterland team’s strong suit. like wintermute’s story makes no sense if you look at it for more than a few seconds (which I say as someone who loves wintermute). They’re really good at ambience, but realistic characterization isn’t really something they’ve shown so far. Their mediocre character writing even shows in the environmental storytelling like the letters you find on bodies (the climber in ash canyon who complains about mainlanders comes to mind), it just doesn’t come across as hamfisted there like it does with the more story based things because it’s incidental and occasional.
I have to admit, I dont remember wintermute well enough to judge, but I think it felt appropriate for where the game was at the time. The Long Dark is an indie game with limited game mechanics so of course it wouldnt be another rdr2. And in survival, the letters we find... I can overlook that, because they were never meant to be anything more than vague hints to fuel the mysterious, gloomy ambience. (But then again, you find letters in the witcher 3 that manage to create entire characters with backstories, families, etc. Whereas here you could argue that if you dont have anything to say, dont bother putting it on paper)
But the dlc supposedly has a fully fleshed out storyline. And I don't even need much more! I dont need other characters to appear like in wintermute, but all the reports are just a whole bunch of nothing. Nothing the security chief talks about belongs in a security chief's log, especially before things went bad. Same with the foreman's report. I have just completed the third tale and I honestly cant tell you whats happening. I know there was a secret operation, a mad scientist and his maschine (and like, tired plot tbh?) and people started feeling bad. Considering how many reports I found I should know more than that....
Wintermute's plot was simple because the game mechanics didnt allow for much else and yes, some of it is really cliche (like, whats with all these creepy mysterious elders?), but the writing here... I see what they were trying to do, doubling down on the eeriness and all but here it just felt like. Yeah of course there is a mad scientist.
There is an argument to be made for the banality of evil. You can have villains and antagonists without making them insane. Most "evil" people in our world are simply greedy! The villain might as well be the guy who owns the mine, skimps on safety precautions causing his employees to get sick and die. And then fucks off in a provate plane that went down in say, Timberwolf Mountain and you go check it out because you have nothing else to do but that would be to boring I guess

Listen, I really like the dlc. I like all the new stuff, all the new things you can do even if its still a little buggy. But the plot makes no sense at all. All the reports talk so much without saying anything. Its just pretty words. I wasnt expecting Lord of the Rings here, but at least a little less superficial maybe? The characters a little less cartoonish?
