pls tell me more of ur fic pet peeves
K OSMFKS OKAY MAN. man. HSDBBSJDJS
so i have like. a FUCK ton of pet peeves for fics, and i just wanted to say first that fanfic should not be placed in any boxes or standards because it is freely written and it is something meant to be enjoyed. these are my opinions and all peeve me to only a certain degree (meaning it squicks me out at worst)âso if you are a fic writer and you find yourself doing any of these things, do NOT take it to heart and just know i love you for doing what you do and i wish you all the best âĄ
im gonna give reasons why certain things peeve me so i dont just sound like im bitching but generally, when reading ANY fics, i dislike the ff:
- long paragraphs with no breaks. bro i have adhd i cant go through all of this im going to get LOST.
- underlining, bolding, italicizing, AND capitalizing statements for emphasis like sir its chill i think i get the point. imho if you wrote your scene well enough and paced it properly, the most you'll need is an italics and maybe an exclamation mark. u gotta trust ur own writing and the reading comprehension of your audience.
- jittery perspective jumps especially when its fic about characters who use the same pronouns and youre constantly shifting the thoughts being presented. it... gets kinda confusing.
- FIRST PERSON POV. ITS NOT BAD I JUST GET SO JARRED BECAUSE SASUKE UCHIHA IS DOING WHAT TO ME??
everything else like grammar and punctuation and spelling is literally just. whatever. like as long as i get your point i really dont care. sometimes writers dont speak english fluently. sometimes writers just fuck up and dont have betas. sometimes writers just post their chapters at 3 am and leave all their mistakes out for god. i have no right to judge.
for personal bnha fic pet peeves, ig most of my annoyance lies on characterization and my own personal beliefs
- i already said it previously but i cannot STRESS how much i dislike the whole "fuck redemption arcs and fuck all authority figures except LoV for some reason" theme. it annoys me and i just flat out dont agree with it
- HATE tropes that reduce deku to being like đ„șđđ uwu okie soft helpless bean. theres nothing wrong with it if thats how you prefer deku, but i just get annoyed by it
- ANYTIME BKDK HAS AN UNEQUAL DYNAMIC. again. nothing wrong with exploring it in fanfiction. i just dislike reading fics that make either deku or bakugou blatantly weaker than the other. i love quirkless deku fics but i hate ones where he's also characterized as amounting to nothing and still acts like bakugous punching bag/okay with bakugou disrespecting him. their whole dynamic in canon is built on a great deal of respect
- speaking of bkdks power dynamic, FRICK GOSH I HATE SEEING FICS WHERE DEKU "realizes bakugous been abusing him for years!" and gets him expelled from ua and everyone claps. like. LIKE??? N. NO???? thats not how it works đ
- all might slander. also unjustified or unnuanced endeavor slander where they dont tackle the complexity of his character. also also unjustified or unnuanced bakugous mom slander. this ones a bit controversial so i wont talk about it much.
- sexist homophobic or racist bakugou. im kicking that away. no. especially fics where bakugous past bullying is explained as "repressed homosexuality". i like making that as a joke but i genuinely do no believe in it.
- BAD MOM MIDORIYA INKO. ITS A TROPE I SEE SOMETIMES AND IT MAKES ME CRY I DONT HAVE A RATIONAL REASONING FOR IT I JUST LOVE INKO
- fics where ochako is obviously very reduced into a supporting figure with absolutely no dimension except being a supportive character and maybe having a shoe-horned wlw romance just for the sake of making her unavailable. shes my fave bnha girl and sometimes in fics i can literally FEEL her character being butchered to only show up when deku needs Love Advice. *note that this only applies when literally every other male character has something else going on for them and its just the females being sidelined into Boy Advice Givers and Talking Sense.
- fics that very obviously belittle asian principles and culture. family means a GOOD DEAL to a lot of asian cultures and fics that spout "if you dont like your family then leave and find your own! its that simple!" usually sound incredibly ignorant or outright claim moral superiority to the weight of familial bond in asian culture. same with manners, respect, and discipline.
- jeALOUSY/CHEATING FICS OK IM SELFISH I ONLY WANT BKDK TOGETHER LIKE IM DEKUBOWL ONLY SOMETIMES BUT BKDK ALWAYS HAS TO END UP TOGETHER
- "murdering is ok if its characters i hate đ„°" ... listen, you do you bestie but like. no thanks. if i wanted to read about mineta getting murdered by momo with a pistol i dont think id be opening a bkdk soulmarks au
- any dekusquad slander đ i love them okay
- *kicks mean/bakugou-hating todoroki out the door*
- *kicks 'all mha characters text, talk, and behave like 14 year old stan twt users (no offense ok i speak like that too)' fics out the door*
- *kicks bratty deku and/or bakugou out the door*
thats. all i can think of atm.

While i do know Gabi did eventually change ( thankfully) i think my general dislike came from her over the top hatred of the eldians ( her own people) and her worship of the people who oppressed her people.
Also the reason i mentioned the older warriors..Annie, Bertholt, and Reiner was because by the time we as readers saw who they really were.. they were already so conflicted about if they were right or not they were literally forgetting who they actually were, even when Bertholt called them devils its seems like he didn't believe it himself. Annie even cried when they had to kill Marco.
It might be because we already knew these characters and they never seemed hostile or bad people then when they did reveal themselves they were on the fence about it all and seemed to hate the position they were in, they were already seeing how horrible it all was and it tore them up to follow through with their plan. So thats probably why its easier with those three..
But when we first meet Gabi.. She was so up in your face with her dislike of her own race.. She very vocal about it when technically she was no different. She just seems so self hating and it rubs me the wrong way. We never really saw that blind eldian hatred from Annie, Bertholt and Reiner. Bertholt and Reiner i felt started self loathing not because they are eldian but because they realized the were wrong and were betraying their friends.
Also with Falco and the other candidates they were more calm about the whole thing and seemed to be just going with the flow and following orders to survive and hopefully better their family situation to not be seen in a negative light any longer.
But Gabi seemed different right from the get go she really believed her race were actual devils.. She seemed so self hating that she was willing to turn into the very thing that made her people devils and hated and ostracized in the first place.
But at the same time she came off as self righteous, due to her believing she ( even though she was also a "devil") that she was special enough to be one of the exceptions. Like i said the others weren't all in your face about it like she was...maybe that's what makes her more unlikable.
While i do know Gabi did eventually change ( thankfully) i think my general dislike came from her over the top hatred of the eldians ( her own people) and her worship of the people who oppressed her people.
I certainly agree with the fact that Gabi's hatred of the Paradis Eldians was a lot more prominent than any other warrior, so readers obviously have more opportunities to call her out on her bullshit since she displayed her anti Paradis attitude a lot more frequently than the other warriors did. I just don't like it when people hate on her for being stubborn, stupid, gullible etc, all while giving the older warriors a pass, despite the fact that Gabi actually came to doubt her beliefs far sooner than they all did.
Furthermore, I wouldn't say that Gabi worshiped the Marleyans. Everything she did, she did for the sake of the Eldians on Marley who she was made to believe were the "good" Eldians. She wasn't striving to become a warrior out of love for the Marleyan people, she was doing so in order to free her fellow Eldians from the Internment Zone. They were her motivation, not Marley.
I understand in that sense, that it's easier to hate on Gabi for her views because that was your first impression of her, whereas with the other warriors, we got to know them as scouts before we knew them as the Marleyan warriors. I suppose it just grates on me a little bit because but it's still obviously unfair to throw more hate in Gabi's direction due to first impressions. All of their inner conflict came years later, Gabi's came after weeks. Yes, her hatred was a lot more pronounced which made her an easy target for reader discontent, but that's not only because her convictions were always a lot greater than their's (which is an admirable trait to have), but also because Gabi's hatred was being targeted towards characters we had grown to love, so it may also be a matter of perspective there. If we had been following Gabi and her peers since the beginning rather than the Survey Corps, I would love to see the drastic shift in her support.
It might be because we already knew these characters and they never seemed hostile or bad people then when they did reveal themselves they were on the fence about it all and seemed to hate the position they were in, they were already seeing how horrible it all was and it tore them up to follow through with their plan. So thats probably why its easier with those three..
Yeah, nothing more needs to be said really. Gabi was put in the unfortunate position of being introduced as being really passionate about the very harmful and prejudiced ideals she was brainwashed into believing, and this was at a time when the readers were all fully aware of what was going on. Therefore, it was really easy to get frustrated with her for believing what we all knew to be lies. I just don't think it's fair that Gabi gets far more hate for this than any of the older warriors, despite her coming to terms with the truth a lot sooner than they did. This is especially true when we consider just how determined and adamant about it she was as well. She displayed more tenacity towards her objectives and belief in the Marleyan brainwashing than any other warrior apart from maybe Reiner, and yet she came to terms with the truth a lot quicker than all of them other than Falco. I think she deserves plaudits for that.
I understand and agree with the point of finding it easier to criticise Gabi due to how vocal she was about her hatred for the Paradis Eldians. However, we did see that type of brainwashed infused hatred from Reiner, we just didn't have the opportunity to see it as much with him or any of the older warriors because the main story began after they had already started questioning themselves. That just links back my point regarding Gabi being put into an unfortunate position due to being introduced that way so late on.
Also with Falco and the other candidates they were more calm about the whole thing and seemed to be just going with the flow and following orders to survive and hopefully better their family situation to not be seen in a negative light any longer.
They were definitely a lot calmer, no arguments there, and that just goes back to my point regarding the strength of Gabi's convictions. She and Eren had frightening levels of drive and motivation, but many fans didn't give her the credit she was due for that, simply because her motivations were towards a goal that was in opposition to the Paradis Eldians who we had grown attached to. If we had been seeing things from her perspective since the beginning, I'm all but certain that her fierce convictions would have garnered her praise, rather than near universal hatred from the fandom.
She was wiling to cross no man's land into enemy territory by herself, with nothing but hand grenades, in order to disable the armoured train, so that the 800 Eldians in the bunker didn't have to sacrifice themselves during the war.
She was willing to sacrifice herself to board the Paradis aircraft by herself, to get some measure of revenge in honour of her home town, which had just been devastated into oblivion.
If we just detach Gabi's character from her initial hatred of the Paradis Eldians, and observe these feats of mental fortitude, it is actually quite remarkable that her sense of purpose towards the Eldians on Marley and her home, was that strong.
But Gabi seemed different right from the get go she really believed her race were actual devils.. She seemed so self hating that she was willing to turn into the very thing that made her people devils and hated and ostracized in the first place.
As far as we know, apart from Falco, they all really believed that the Paradis Eldians were devils. She was more vocal about it, but I wouldn't say that she was any different. It also didn't help that probably every time a slight hint of doubt would accidentally creep into Gabi's mind, like when Reiner unwittingly described Paradis island as having many kinds of people rather than them being all bad, and Gabi questioned this, she had her aunt right there to ensure that she kept on believing what Marley wanted them to believe.
But at the same time she came off as self righteous, due to her believing she ( even though she was also a "devil") that she was special enough to be one of the exceptions. Like i said the others weren't all in your face about it like she was...maybe that's what makes her more unlikable.
But that self righteousness that you're speaking of was a direct result of Marley's brainwashing. That wasn't something that she innately thought or naturally believed. Gabi believed that she was an exception to the Paradis Eldians because that's what she had been taught. That's why I can't really hate on her for that - because she was conditioned to think this way.
I definitely understand how frustrating it often was to listen to her spout shit about the "Eldian Devils" every other sentence, but I suppose I just found it a lot easier than most fans to separate the unnatural traits of her character that were drilled into her by the Marleyan brainwashing (like her belief that she was different from the Paradis Eldians), from the natural traits of her character that were always part of who she truly is (like her love for her home Liberio, her Eldian comrades on Marley, and her fiercely powerful convictions).

Im ISTP dude and I like this INFJ girl. Shes my friend but I like her more than that. I told her already and asked her out. She didn't reject me but thing is her answer is vague as hell. First she asked why I like her and I told her honestly that shes pretty and smart but she didnt react more than a nod. Then when I ask if she wanna be my girlfriend she said 'okay but can it be a trial period first'. I assumed its a yes so we started going out but its very weird. (1)
[conât: It gets even more difficult to understand her and shes start asking me questions about my perspective on love and start warning me about her loving differently than other people and I might not like it and stuff like that. She also seems to be assessing me somehow? I dont know. Like shes trying to judge something about me. I dont think shes playing me or anything cause we always do things fair. She insists we split the bills on everything when we go out and she never demand anything so thats cool. We also spend time together like before. Its just very weird cause she seems more guarded around me and more jumpy and colder than usual even though shes still nice to me and all. Is this normal for INFJs? Maybe she doesnt actually like me? But then why did she agree? I mean we have same interests and we seem to have fun together so I dont understand whats wrong. Should I continue this or just go back to being friends? I like her a lot but I dont wanna waste time on relationship that goes nowhere.]
Note that you canât improve the quality of a relationship until both people are equally committed to the task. Relationships flourish through skillful communication:
1) Self-Awareness: Be fully aware of your needs, wants, and criteria for relationships. Take full responsibility for your end, so that you do everything in your power to promote relationship success, and then the rest is up to her. Itâs important that you are able to communicate clearly and honestly about whatâs happening with you, including what you think is going wrong for you and why. If you canât even make your needs and problems known to your partner, then youâll never really know each other well enough to get any needs met.
You have not succeeded in this step because youâre putting the whole situation onto her shoulders, as though you have no say in the matter. Whether you stay or leave is your decision to make, based on your evaluation of the relationship and whether itâs what you really want. If a relationship makes you unhappy/dissatisfied, why stay? Youâre the one feeling the problem, which means that itâs up to you to instigate a process of resolution.Â
People usually stick it out through the down times in a relationship because they have a hopeful vision of what the relationship could become. You have a hopeful vision because youâre talking about how the current situation isnât meeting your expectations. But what are your expectations? You say that you have fun together, why isnât that enough? Whatâs missing for you exactly? Without enough awareness of yourself and being able to verbalize the problem that youâre experiencing, itâs hard to find a solution.
2) Intimacy: A relationship grows deeper over time through honest, attentive, and respectful communication. Talk about what you like, dislike, desire, hope for, etc, with each other, often. Gradually, you both become a better partner as you learn how to adjust your behavior to better suit the otherâs needs. The process of becoming more intimately acquainted requires time and energy to learn new things and apply the ideas successfully. You have to be patient and put in the effort to have difficult conversations whenever necessary to grow your knowledge and understanding of each other.
You have not succeeded in this step because youâre making assumptions rather than communicating. Youâre merely guessing that sheâs trying to do this or that, and you end up whipping yourself into paranoia. âAssumingâ, aka trying to be a mindreader, is very destructive to relationships because it causes misunderstanding. Relationships require trust, so take people at their word, and when you canât, talk about why you canât and solve the problem through communication. Donât stew in negative feelings and allow them to turn into ugly conspiracy theories.
By saying that she wants a trial period, sheâs basically telling you that sheâs interested but not ready for a full commitment. If youâre not happy with her position, then you have a choice to make: Either respect that her pace is slower than yours and be patient, or decide that you want something faster/different and leave for greener pastures. Sheâs already been honest and upfront with you, the ball is now in your court about whether you accept the terms sheâs proposed. If you accept, then FULLY accept.
By asking plenty of questions about your perspective, she is making an effort to get to know you better, specifically, to understand why you want to be in the relationship and whether you two are ultimately compatible. You hardly know each other at the start of a relationship, so she is indeed trying to size you up, such that she can make a well-informed decision once the trial period ends. If you donât like people getting to know you in depth, then youâre never going to get far in any relationship. She obviously is the kind of person that needs to prepare and study situations carefully before diving in. If you donât like that, then you are free to choose someone who doesnât require as much preparation and observation time (this is a common J vs P difference).
3) Collaboration: Whenever either party feels unhappy or dissatisfied with something in the relationship, it is their responsibility to bring it up with the partner. When your partner brings a problem to you, it is your responsibility to listen carefully to what it is they need from you. Only then can you resolve problems maturely, together. If it is determined that your partner is capable of better meeting your needs, then make a reasonable request of them to do so. Talk openly about what should be changed in the relationship to make it more fulfilling for both parties, and implement a plan to make those changes. Keep tabs on progress made over time.
You have not succeeded in this step because youâre not being upfront about your negative experience of the relationship and what more you need from it. This means that youâre not giving her the opportunity to collaborate with you. If you donât talk about how you feel, sheâll never know, and the change that you want wonât happen.
By talking about the way that she âloves differentlyâ, sheâs communicating something about her needs and expectations. Sheâs giving you an opportunity to know her better, such that you can collaborate with her to fulfill her needs. If sheâs inexperienced, she may not yet know every little thing that sheâs looking for in a relationship. But the most important thing is that sheâs trying to communicate about it, which means itâs up to you to listen and respond appropriately. If you have no interest in getting to know her and what kind of partner sheâs looking for, then thereâs no reciprocity in the relationship. Are you only in it for yourself?
By asking you why you like her, she may be signalling some self-esteem issues (âI donât know if I can do thisâ) and/or self-worth issues (âMaybe I donât deserve this attention/loveâ). Healthy Fs are sensitive people, which means that they feel things very deeply. The deeper they feel, the more deeply they will be hurt, if things donât work out. Therefore, it is likely that she is hesitant to dive in because sheâs trying to stay in control and protect herself from getting hurt (this is typical of FJs). Forcing someone to leave their comfort zone before they are ready to is a recipe for drama and conflict. The most you can do is encourage her to open up, by providing an emotionally supportive, cooperative, and non-judgmental atmosphere to express how she really feels. Without a positive social atmosphere, FJs wonât open up. Sheâs moving at a pace thatâs comfortable for her, which includes pulling back whenever she feels uncomfortable. Be sure to clarify whether itâs her own issue or whether youâre doing something to make her uncomfortable - donât just assume. If you donât like her âguardedâ approach, then you are free to choose someone who is more open and carefree (you are navigating a common J vs P difference).
If you like someone a lot, it means that youâre willing to put in effort for them? You have every right to decide how much effort youâre willing to put in. The relationship is still in its early stages and you wonât lose much by ending it now. However, donât forget that thereâs a lot you can do to be better at relationships, mainly by addressing any behavior that hurts rather than helps relationships to progress.

My two cents on the whole AOA situation.
This is going to be long, Iâm sorry.
Iâve seen lots of people sharing their thoughts and opinions on this matter so I thought I would do the same...I think I actually needed to do this.
I, for the time being, cannot listen to their songs, I donât want to...and yeah it kind of hurts, I know Iâll be able to later and i think I will still like the songs because they are good.
I was so interested in AOA even before their debut, I saw all the teasers, and Iâve kept track of them as a fan since then, they even were my favourite group for a while.
Learning that this whole situation began ten years ago was heartbreaking because it was even when they were trainees and nobody knew them, they still chose to debut like that (all of them). It really shows how the mindset of any person who wishes to debut can be, and gives a new light into how devious and dark the kpop world can, sometimes, be.
In any situation, bullying is horrible and we should not stand by it. But us regular people have it easier. Thatâs why I think that taking care of yourself and your dreams or goals by not participating is valid and, specially in the kpop industry, is probably more common that we think. Even outside, I cannot judge people who donât intervene or defend other because, while Iâve had the chance to help others being bullied and even stopped it, Iâve also lived situations where helping was not an option and even where I chose not to. I think itâs part of society and human nature to have this duality and itâs even more intelligent to think how can you help the victim, instead of attacking the bully.
On the other side, bullying (in early stages) takes two roles (bully and victim) Most people get to choose who they are and wether they are going to let it happen or not, whatever you choose, you should accept the consequences.Â
Iâve been picked on (never physically fortunately) for different resons since my childhood, sometimes I defended myself, sometimes I didnât, sometimes I chose to ignore and sometimes I chose to respond. Some memories hurt still, but Iâm ok, I was back then and now I can see how processing them made me stronger now. That is not the case for lots of people.
That being said, and sorry for rambling, Iâm really glad Mina spoke about it, she needed to release it, I do believe everything she said and I actually find it not surprising 8which is even more heartbreaking). However I definitely donât think it was the right, clean way to do or even healthy for her.Â
I think this bullying situation should be solved between Mina, Jimin and the real professional authorities (doctors, lawyers, police) even mabye the company since they let the situation happen (which is sad how not surpising it is). If Jimin bullied anybody else, then itâs a problem between them specifically.
Just a few days back she posted a picture of her wound, made believe that it had just happened and then cleared out that it was from months back, was it necessary? To me, that post and what she said in it didnât help her situation, not did it affect Jimin anymore...Honestly I donât blame her for doing that but then again, to some, she ends up looking unstable and chaotic, and with the experiences she lived she probably is.
As for us (the fans) and regular people and netizens and whoever followed her shouldnât have a say in the matter, we werenât there and weâll never be...we really donât know. I honestly think we should limit ourselves to support Mina or whoever you want to support or believe without involving the other parties and doing justice for them, weâre not saviors nor we should try to be. We are fans, our job, if we even have one, is to support and thats all.
Something that really makes me mad is that Iâve seen videos incriminating others and clickbaiting to sound dramating...I know thatâs how it works and thats why I hate it, it really makes us biased and suddenly weâve lost the ability to think and reason, weâve become sheep to a title,a perspective and even more so the person that wrote it.
Thereâs a reality but the perspective depends on the person who is living it, they are ALL VALID so...
As for Jimin...Iâm glad she left, it was the healthiest option for her. I donât see her promoting ever again and maybe itâs for the best, an example for others to think better before bullying.
I just cant empathize with bullying in general, but even more so with someone who shares your goals, dreams, and is even an important part of the team that was given to you in order to achieve success. I donât understand what made her do something like that, specially as the leader of the group and a person who is talented, why waste all of yourself on something that is so obviously wrong.
I still donât think she is a monster who needs to be vanished from existence though so I hope she reflects a lot, gets the treatment she needs, pays her due and comes out a better person, for her and the people that will surround her in the future.
As for the other members... IMO they are not the same or worse that a bully.
They made decisions that now have consequences but I donât think badly of any of them, I hope they continue to be great, grow up as a person, can be happy and succeed in whatever they choose to do from now on. I completely disagree when people say that they are worse for not helping...we donât get to choose how someone should have acted, we donâr know how the other members lived the situation.
Mina. I hope she feels liberated and better, Iâm gald she is now receiving treatment and I hope she never has to experience something like that again and maybe uses her experience to help others and become a better person herself. I believe her, but no more than limit myself to believe that that is how SHE lived and felt it, itâs her truth and itâs valid. I hope she gains strength to defend herself better in any situation needed and get the happy life she deserves.
Iâm now glad Choa and Youkyoung left when they did, letâs remember they knew about this cause of the time frame, but they left. If they were bullied, just unconfortable, had their dreams change, tired, left out, wanted to or they chose to leave as we âofficially knowâ thats what they chose and it was the best option for them, I applaud them and hope they are happier and successful now. IMO, to end bullying sometimes itâs better to remove yourself from the situation before trying to change the bully. Maybe unfair, yes; but I think itâs healthier, brave, strong and maybe even mature as (I believe), you get to take the bullyâs streght from them while you can get better and use it to do something else, or the same somewhere else.
Mina said that Seolhyun never once joined Jimin in the bullying, she didn't stop her and was a bystander for that, while still (generally) wrong I think she chose that to be safe, and in that industry I can't blame her for that. I actually think itâs possible that Seolhyun chose to be Jiminâs friend to avoid that scenario with her, or maybe she saw another side of her, she knows her truth and will grow from this scenario. I wish only good thing for her too.
As for Chanmi, sheâs always been my favourite. Mina said that she did nothing even when she herself was being scolded cause she's/ was too young and sheâs also believed to have been bullied as well, I believe this as well and it was her defense mechanisim, not only Jimin but probably the managers, antis and company staff. She worked hard and will definetly grow from this, I hope she succeeds and gets to be happy and safe.
Yuna is, not surprisingly either, probably the member who is been talked about the least, Mina said she cherised her well but was to afraid to act which makes sense. I donât see Yuna as a problematic person and I hope she succeeds, gains strength and confidence to become better, as well as the others.
Lastly, it was said by Mina that only Hyejeong said something to Jimin sometimes and that all the others were either too afraid or not participating at all. I really admire Hyejeong for that and hope she continues being strong and making her dreams and goals come true.
Them I like, I still do. I know I say not to judge but I canât dislike them not even blame them. With that little information I have on the matter and the context of behind the scenes of kpop Iâve learned, I understand why everyone acted the way they did.
The real truth, only the girls know (each their own) and it should be something they (all of them) sort out with professionals, individually and between themselves.
I wish they were taken care of better, that they were treated better so that this never had to happen. This I blame on the peson that chose and for some reason needed to bully her members but MORE IMPORTANTLY I blame it on the companies who treat their trainees and artists badly or just see the money they can get. They forget (and sometimes we followers do too) that they are people, humans chasing their dreams and sacrificing a lot to do it, even their lifes.
The kpop world is awesome sometimes but it can really suck and be so toxic.
Thinking about this, most groups, probably, have cases like this, I think real friendships in groups are rare TBH and thats fine, they are a team, coleagues and thatÂŽs all that matters...If they happen to become friends all the better, but thats not necessary to me anymore.Â
Today I choose to believe that for every group I follow. And really, I choose to just limit myself to support and enjoy their personas (as in who they are on screen) from afar. What happens behind is only theirs to bare.
If you read this, thanks...I just needed to get this out of my chest to let it go. If you agree, Iâm glad and if you donât thats fine too.

an anon asked a while back if i could write an essay explaining why i hate karen and kastle and me, being me, saved it in my asks until i could further explain to full capacity. my response?
absolutely. iâve had this ask in my inbox for quite a few weeks, since before the release of the punisher. in order for people to understand my view points and beliefs, we must take off any shipping goggles we might have and view it from a fairly objective view point. (iâve also added my own gifs to this because eh, why not?) also, this got quite long so under a cut it goes. also, it sort of gets messy but bear with me. (word count: 2.5k)
weâll first begin with miss karen page. first introduced as a girl being framed for a murder she did not commit; a fresh breath of air, of sorts, in a show focusing mainly on foggy and matt, two men. as the first season moves on, we see that sheâs interested in discovering more about union allied, who attempted to frame her, and that eventually leads her to ben urich, a reporter who, in his heyday, followed thrilling and intense cases and wrote groundbreaking articles. now, though, since heâs aged and has more concern for his life and job--which he needs to support his dying wife while sheâs in the hospital--he writes whatever his editor wants him to. heâs fine with this. in fact, heâs comfortable with this.
the issue, though? karen essentially pushes him back into this type of work, bringing him into her hunt on union allied which he explicitly stated, multiple times, that he did not wish to do. he knows how this will likely end--he even tells her as much, reminding her that heâs old now, and heâs âa lot less stupidâ. while we canât entirely fault her for coercing him into working with her, since he is a grown man and he can make his own decisions, she was the cause of the events that led up to, and caused, his death. yes, a white woman caused a black manâs death. unsurprising news when youâre black.
after his death, though? karen--who holds absolutely no relation to him--gets the ownership of his car, which could have gone towards paying his wifeâs hospital bills, and his job, despite having absolutely no credentials or prior experience. that is a fine example of white privilege. never worked or trained a day in that work, ever, and yet she gets his job. i know this isnât real life, but itâs a piece of realistic fiction. it should be realistic---which, i guess, it is, since the only way someone with no credentials or experience in journalism is going to get a job is if theyâre white. also, this is marvel netflixâs first example of violently murdering a black person in their series (which they do in every one of their series), so that leaves a foul taste in my mouth, as a black person.
and next came the, what i like to call âweirdly random ooc #female badassness! wannabe episodeâ, aka the episode where she kills wesley, stating that sheâs fired a gun before and insinuated that sheâs killed before. not only does she get off scot free for this (which, by the way, never would have happened unless she was white), but itâs also never mentioned ever again. it was a needless act that was ludicrous in execution and inserting into the narrative. it was just a way to say âlook! our blonde haired beauty is a badass haha :)â
season two comes along, and itâs shown that sheâs digging up information about the punisher while also going on dates with matt. eventually, though, she meets frank for who he is and this is what i call the sort of beginning of manipulation, at least for her, but iâll be getting more into depth about this later. in the last few episodes, she gives frank an ultimatum -- stop being the punisher, or sheâll walk away. youâll recall that in the defenders, she also gave matt the same ultimatum, which is a form of manipulation and underlying abuse. karen can not accept that these mensâ alter egos is who they are inside, and that causes for her to make them choose between her and doing what they want to do. having experienced such abuse from the hands of ex friends in the past, it sealed the deal for my disdain for her.
the main thing i dislike about karen is how sheâs written in a way where itâs as if she can do no wrong. and fandomâs behavior definitely perpetuates that. sheïżœïżœïżœs seen as a â#perfect cinnamon rollâ or a â#goddessâ or a saint or whatever fandom is referring to her as. she truly is not all that, yet the writers tend to portray her as such. (needless to say that in the comics, she sold mattâs identity as daredevil for drugs, but thatâs beside the point.) she does not deserve to be held to such a high pedestal, and fandom, specifically certain individuals in the fandom, should not hate people who point out valid criticism of her because they canât see it from any perspective that isnât their own.
on that note, fandom is a large part of my hatred for characters or ships. fandom never knows how to be normal and they either detest you for not liking their favorite character / ship, or donât listen to you at all.
when it comes to kastle, though, things are more simple to explain. (as of writing, i am currently on the third episode of the punisher and going slowly through it for obvious reasons.) the entire reason frank does what he does, is because of the death of his family. of his children, of his wife. he relives that all throughout season two of daredevil despite claiming to not have ptsd, and we see it even more intensely in the punisher. he thinks of his wife and children every day, without fail--often times its the first thing he thinks of, and the last thing he thinks of. even a year to two years after their death, the wound is still raw and he is very much not over it.
so why, pray tell, is the ship kastle a thing? he is not, in anyway capable of having or maintaining a healthy relationship as of right now--nor might he ever. the fact that people could excuse this obviously damaged manâs feelings just to ship him with fandomâs white fave, thinly veiled self insert character is saddening and bordering on disgusting. he hasnt even had the chance to heal or breathe and everyoneâs already shipping him with her?
matt said that karen deserves better than him. âbetter than [matt]â does not equal âyou should date frankâ. frank, himself, says that karen is in love with matt. he compares that love to him and his wife, who heâs not over. karen understands this and accepts this -- she is in love with matt, just as frank is in love with maria, still.
his love for maria is further solidified in the first episode of the punisher, when he repeatedly relives good moments that he had with maria and reminisces on the things that he loved about her through his memories. he, in every way, needs healing. what he does not need is a relationship. that would be one of the last things that he needs, especially after going through all that he has. the death and loss of his family was one of the most traumatic things heâs experienced, to the point that he takes it upon himself to track every single person connected to their murder and kill them, even going so far as juarez, mexico, to do so. six months after that is not enough time for the emotional stability that frank needs before a relationship with anyone could even be considered.
after frank kills schoonover, karen is visibly upset.
she didnât want him to kill someone, and she even goes so far as to tell him that he canât keep doing what heâs doing, otherwise, theyâre through, and sheâs walking. (to which he obviously keeps doing what heâs doing and doesnât look back as he leaves her in the woods.)
going back a bit, in episode ten, after his escape, sheâs afraid of him to the point that she draws a gun on him.
(needless to say the scene right after this is everyoneâs beloved #zomg kastle!! scene. everyone seems to ignore what happened right before that scene though. hm. wonder why.)
does that even seem like a good relationship build up? he makes her cry out of a fear for him, she gives him an ultimatum, manipulating him, she pulls a gun on him and absolutely can kill him, as seen since sheâs murdered wesley and has apparently done so before in the past. he has no reason to believe that she wonât pull that trigger, and the audience, aside from knowing that the punisher is too iconic of a character to kill off, has no reason to believe that she wonât pull that trigger. why not? sheâs done it before on screen, and she showed us what sheâs capable of doing.
she doesnât get the chance to because her apartment is shot up and frank, the good person that he is, ducks down and protects her. because heâs a good person, and sheâs someone he can consider, at this point, to be a sort of âfriendâ. (iâm like, 90% sure none of you guys have ever had any good things happen to you from good people or that yall have friends and cant tell the difference between friendship love and romantic love, since yall ship this, but i rest my case.)
a fun scene i saw pop up in the anti kastle tag -- a post written by a shipper -- was the scene in the punisher where someone refers to karen as âhis girlfriend, and takes that as a sign. please, i know we all know better than this. people tease people all the time when it comes to friends, especially attractive ones, typically those of the opposite gender. i canât list the number of times that one of my childhood friends was called âmy boyfriendâ by my family or i was called âhis girlfriendâ by his. it would be completely ludicrous to presume that that sort of comment meant anything other than a jest or a poke at frankâs expense. thatâs what friends are like, thatâs a universal experience for most people who have friends. it does not hint towards that ship or somehow verify it. thats not what the comment was. by thinking it verifies the ship in some way, youâre all effectively making a mountain out of...dust.
finally, letâs talk about fandomâs need to show their ass when it comes to their ableism. frank castle has ptsd, albeit he is in denial of such a fact. fandom often writes fics and headcanons that if kastle was canon, karen could âfixâ frank of his ptsd and âmake the pain go awayâ. for one thing, ptsd does not go away. it doesnât. being with someone does not make it go away. i know fandom likes to see karen as a saint or an angel or a goddess, but sheâs human. even if kastle were to happen, the ptsd would still be there. frank isnt going to magically be âcuredâ because heâs dating karen page. the fact that this is such a common fandom headcanon is ableist in and of itself. as an abuse survivor still living in an abusive situation, fandom needs to understand that ptsd does not go away. it can be lessened, yes, but it does not go away. an event such as watching your entire family get slaughtered before your very eyes does not go away, especially when said person repeatedly has flash backs of said event. you cannot expect it to. this is part of the reason why the fandom, itself, sickens me.
also, there are volatile tendencies on both sides. as karen isnât the sole person to blame for why this ship borders on toxicity (almost as bad as the fandom); frank is, as well. due to his volatile nature, and her stubborn and subtle manipulations, as well as the fact that neither of them, specifically frank, are in a position to be in a relationship with anyone (karen as well, considering matt, who she canonically loves, has just appeared to die), makes this ship unable to work. it cannot work and it does not work despite fandomâs perpetual pleas to make it work, likely due to the fact that karen is the self insert character for women all across the fandom, typically and most often, from what iâve seen, the white women. (needless to say that comics canon karen is so vastly different from show karen that she might as well be a self insert oc at this point.) these are the same white women who will likely regard this as âmisogynyâ and label it as just âanother hater hatingâ. that is not what i am, but if thats your prerogative, to demonize a black woman for pointing out valid criticisms and flaws found in the beloved ship and the white woman, thats not my problem.
so, in conclusion, why do i hate karen? mainly due to the fact that her white privilege gets her a job, a car of a dead man with a dying wife, whoâs dead as a result of her actions, and, of course, fandom and their constant push to make her a savior of some kind, here to âfixâ frank. why do i hate kastle? because of fandomâs desire to show their ableism in wanting karen to âfixâ frank of his ptsd and thinking that a relationship with the woman who gave him an ultimatum and manipulated him in order to act the way that she wanted him to is anywhere near âromanticâ. volatile relationships built on past fear of the other and aiming a gun at the other is not a good foundation for any ship. since their meeting, they were known as being in love with other people, and they are currently in a space where they believe their loves are dead. why would someoneâs first reaction be to ship them with each other? why would someoneâs first reaction be to ship the man who regularly has nightmares and panic attacks about the death of his family and his wife with someone else when he is obviously still in mourning? why would someoneâs first reaction be to ship the woman who was crying, sobbing as she attempted to keep him from doing what he wanted to, who was so afraid of him to the point that she held him at gunpoint? where does any of this set the foundations of a good ship?
and why would one ship it?
