I can’t stop listening to those videos that remake classic songs and albums but with the Mario 64 soundfont. It’s like layered nostalgia. A nostalgic lasagne if you will.

The best ones are the ones that have a) payed close attention to the original and have tried to recreate all the *elements* of the song in the Mario soundfont BUT b) have the imagination and courage to not always pick the MIDI instrument from the soundfont that closest resembles the original instrument, instead choosing sounds that are very unique to Mario 64 where it’s appropriate…

Which means that the best ones have the depth ad richness of the original arrangements but SOUND like Mario. Stunning. Here are my favourites:

I'm hearing a phantom fuzz guitar doubling a horn part, and I can't tell if it's mix bleed.

Sorry everyone but Good Day Sunshine in the revolver Album sucks ass. The Beatles made some of the best songs ever, but when they do bad songs they REALLY do bad songs.

#211 I’m Only Sleeping/The Beatles

熱狂のライブができなくなり、レコーディングに活動の拠点を変えたビートルズの中期。ぼくはただ眠っているだけなんだ、邪魔しないで。と歌うジョンの曲。ジョンはベッドの上でうだうだと過ごすのが好きだったらしい（だから、のちにBed Inのパフォーマンスをしたのか？）。この曲はジョージのギターを逆回転で入れたことが有名。そんなことをするのもビートルズが初めてのこと。音符を後ろから書いたものをジョージが忠実に演奏し、オーバーダブに6時間もかかったそうで、映像の2:00ぐらいのところにジョージのあくびの音が聴こえる。そしてもっとも惹かれるのが、ボーカルのジョンの声。甘ったるくて少し高くて細い。ジョンのこの感じがとても好き。これもボーカル録りの時にテープを遅く回し、通常のスピードに戻して再生しているそうで。この曲のコンセプトを活かすためにレコーディングの常識を壊している。こういうところもビートルズの創作の面白さだ。

PAUL McCARTNEY: No, it's just who I am maybe, you know. For instance, when we'd done, we were now famous with the Beatles and we had done "Revolver," one of the early Beatle records. And, um, I got the horrors one day. I thought it was outta tune. I thought the whole album was outta tune. I listened to it and for some reason just, like, oh my god. And I went to the guys, I said, "It's outta tune. It's outta-- I don't know what we're gonna do." You know? And they said-- and they got a bit worried and listened to it. They said, "No, it isn't." I go, "Oh, okay.”
