Merle Oberon (Wuthering Heights, The Scarlet Pimpernel)—She was mixed race (born in India and her mother was Sri Lankan) and still managed to make it in the British and American film industries (by passing) despite a rough start in life and industry racism. She was the first Asian person to be nominated for any Academy Award (best actress in 1935)! She also survived a car accident in 1937 and kept on acting until 1973, despite potentially career-ending facial scars. Also, she met her third husband while they were filming a movie together in 1973 (her last movie and she still looks great!). They fell in love and got married in 1975 when she was 62 and he was 36. She died 4 years later in 1979. Iconic.
Jean Seberg (Breathless, Saint Joan)— Some of us watched À bout de souffle as a lil French undergrad and had the trajectory of our lives changed by Jean Seberg. She IS French new wave!! She is the moment!! She sadly had to work with a lot of shitty directors in her career but even so, she has this magnetic energy whenever she’s on screen. In her personal life, she was also very supportive of civil rights causes, and was even targeted/harassed by the FBI for financially supporting the Black Panther Party.
This is round 3 of the tournament. All other polls in this bracket can be found here. Please reblog with further support of your beloved hot sexy vintage woman.
[additional propaganda submitted under the cut.]
Merle Oberon:
Beautiful. Talented. Biracial. Also please refer to the following promo from the aforementioned A Night To Remember, in which she plays the writer George Sand:
Her performances always give off this perfect blend of of being composed, refined, and aloof while still being deeply passionate and I eat it up every time.
Linked gifset
A rare example of a WOC working in lead roles in this era (mostly because she worked very hard to pass as white and had to hide her south asian heritage sadly). She has this very regal vibe but also a simmering intensity—even holding her own as Cathy opposite Laurence Olivier as Heathcliff.
I need all the gothic fans to STAND UP for our cathy!!
She has such a unique face when it comes to old hollywood actresses - a lot of them start to melt together in my brain - but Merle has always stood out to me<3
Jean Seberg:
anyone who plays Joan of Arc is kind of hot by default tbh
she's gorgeous, she's cool, she has the original blond pixie cut
She donated a lot of her money to civil rights organizations such as the NAACP and the black panther party as well as Native American school groups, as a result of this the fbi ran a smear campaign against her and a surveillance campaign which is thought to have led to her suicide tragically.
idk if this is propaganda but the COINTELPRO and the FBI are widely blamed for her death. If the FBI was after her for supporting the Black Panther Party you know she was good
Well, let's get back to talking about my favorite Tai Lung, for which I was waiting for the project. it was quite expected that he was exploited in a promotional campaign for the sake of PR, so the short screen time does not bother me.
What I didn't like:
inefficient use of Tai Lung.
A quick transition from contempt for panda to respect. I just feel that defeating a villain, and even with the help of an ally, is not such an impressive thing for him to change his mind so radically. it would have worked better if he had more interaction with Po, because as it stands, this whole last scene with the tribute from the villains looks forced and insincere (especially from Lord Shen and Kai).
no interaction with shifu. they don't even mention each other in any way, which upsets me a little.
What I like:
Still GOAT.
Tai Lung was treated with more respect than any of the other villains. for sure, this is also due to technical subtleties, but I was still proud of him, that he acted as a kind of main voice of the inhabitants of the world of souls. he walked ahead of everyone, he spoke on behalf of everyone, he showed an example of respect and told Po that he needed to send them all back. He was also the one who made sure everyone left and took the Chameleon.
Now officially he and Po have a good and respectful relationship. They're still not friends, but it's nice to see them reconcile. and although I still find it hasty, it was nice to watch them say goodbye and how Tai lung says they'll see each other on the other side.
Tai Lung is such a son of Shifu. although they didn't cross paths here in any way, I could still feel their connection in all this dry humor of Tai Lung and his passion to arrange emotional swings for others in the best traditions of Shifu.
As he says "dragon warrior". Not only in this movie, but I need to say it.
in general, there are no special disappointments, even despite the studio's outright manipulations with the use of posters with him and a lot of promos with his participation, implying an important role for the plot. if there's a fifth part coming up, I can see tai lung being used more, because this farewell scene doesn't give the impression of that. But for now… it could have been worse, so I'm not complaining at the moment (just give me time and maybe I'll find something to complain about, lmao)
T is the weakest link, find out the truth about his “real” life and we will have answers to so many of our questions.
Dear Weakest Link Anon,
I couldn't agree more, based on my own (and other like minded people's) research. We knew Mordor's national sport is Compulsive Lying, but the contrast between cold, hard, real facts and the absurd narrative that is never questioned across the street is still shocking.
I explained many times already the reasons that prevent me from publishing and commenting my findings. I can only encourage you to make a simple research on public business databases. It's all on screen, of course...or, in this case, it's all on those websites. Costs are low.
His real life has nothing glamorous about it.
And yes, I know the main argument peddled by the Idiot Twins all day long, every day God makes: a legal document is FACT, TRUTH and an undisputable sign of marital bliss.
These people mentally live in a grotto (calm down, it's about Plato, here). So, according to them, the following legal document MUST come from a legit democratic country, right?
Right?
This is a quote from Stalin's Constitution, ratified by the Eighth Congress of Soviets of the USSR in December 1936, just after the First Moscow Trial of the Party's dissident groups.
By 1937, the Great Purge was building up momentum. The privacy of millions was violated, while many (so many) were tortured, tried in haste and disposed of. Millions of letters were opened, their content scrutinized. The madness temporarily stopped in earnest only with the outbreak of WWII. 1.2 million people were killed in the process.
At the very same moment, other millions of people firmly, even sincerely, believed it was all for the best, FACT, TRUTH and the only possible way reality should look like.
Like in Stalin's Soviet Union, critical examination and contextualization seem to be forbidden in the Land of the Soviets Best Fans Ever. Any questioning or unorthodox behavior is met with kindness: 'the mental ward' is the last trend. It immediately made me think about the fact that in the same Soviet Union, after the war, dissidents were not labeled as political criminals, but as 'psychiatric ward patients'.
The easiest, cheapest and most effective way of ostracizing. And one of the main reasons C's Oscar promo campaign was a resounding flop.
Meanwhile, tax debts, failed projects and flimsy whereabouts seem to tell the pertinent story for your ask, Anon.
No because literally what is their issue with Gaz (we know the issue)
You have two characters who show up in passing, the entire rest of the squad, but not the character that you play as for almost half of the campaign???
It’s awful behaviour and there’s frankly no good reasoning behind it. Wish there was something to be done about it because irregardless of the amount of complaints they get, they’re not going to do anything. Calling it rn that Gaz is the next character they kill off.
Love Activision and their propaganda game they’re just so 👍
I don't even want to go there. But the fact that they leave him out as if he's a side character is actually disgusting. How is he not important? YOU PLAY HIM IN MW19 and HAVE AN AWESOME SCENE ON MW2 WHEN HE'S HANGING FROM A FUCKING ROPE. Literally the best scene in the games and you mean to tell me that he gets no skins, merch, not in promos, etc?
I have a feeling that there's a certain pattern with it. And it's not a very good one. They're not being subtle either. The thing that frustrates me even MORE is the fact that Elliot Knight KNOWS about the misuse of Gaz and Activison more than likely has taken notice to this yet do NOTHING.
I'M LEGIT SICK AND TIRED OF IT. GAZ DESERVES BETTER. And if they kill him in the next MW, I won't be fucking surprised anymore.

Hi admin! Thank you so much for holding this tournament, it’s been so fun to participate in! I hope you’ll share this message with everyone: On behalf of the LockNation Discord planning server and the whole fandom, thank you to everyone who voted for Lockwood and Co in this tournament! As I’ve said before, LockNation came into this competition knowing it wouldn’t change Netflix’s mind about the cancellation. But we campaigned hard and did our best to win anyway, because it has done wonders for our campaign. LockNation grows stronger and larger by the day because of the passion everyone exhibits in this campaign. More and more people tune into this show daily, and that’s not because of any official promo. It’s because of us. Even months after cancellation, people still care about this show and they care about it deeply. The author of the book series and the show’s production company have been nothing but grateful and encouraging in response to our campaign efforts, so I would like to ask that everyone reading this sign our petition to save the show:
https://chng.it/Zy74YS5ZMT
We’ve seen shows get renewed after cancellation before. Warrior Nun just found out the news about a movie trilogy last night! So I, and the rest of LockNation remain hopeful. We hope you all will join us in the fight for a season 2!
thank you guys for being such great competitors, it was a joy to have you here!! I wish you all luck with getting the show renewed ❤️
i honestly do not understand this never ending conversation about tay’s lack of promo. i know to some people the success / numbers is a big part of stan culture meanwhile im truly just here to enjoy the music so maybe that’s why i don’t get it. but regardless, the artist in question is TAYLOR SWIFT? yes for smaller artists there is maybe more concern about charting and numbers but i have literally zero doubt that ttpd will debut at number 1 and quite frankly, i doubt taylor does either. her fame has surpassed the need for promo. i don’t think there’s anyone that would be even slightly interested that doesn’t know she has an album dropping
i also think the people complaining / worrying about the lack of promo are severely undervaluing the merits of the subtle promo strategy. like i said, at this point in her career taylor doesn’t need to worry about getting listeners, but probably if she was doing more promo that would definitely cause backlash. and if she released a lead single ahead of time it would just give people the opportunity to make judgements and write up criticisms and possibly deter certain people from listening to the rest because they would feel they heard enough and imagine the rest would be the same. instead, she’s building massive anticipation. everybody is going to be listening bc she’s been so cryptic about it that no one knows what to expect. sometimes no promo IS the best promo.
and lastly, i think another big part of why certain swifties want a massive promo campaign is the desire for more “content” from taylor. i think this is inherently problematic regardless but especially with an album dealing with such personal emotional pain, i understand why she might not want to go on a massive campaign talking about it. instead, she’s having a great week hanging out with her new boyfriend at coachella and knowing that is making me way happier than if she was suiting up doing interviews every night. let’s all please try to stop exploiting taylor and demanding things of her and instead remember that she’s also just a human that has a right to live her life as she chooses, even during an album release week
Episode 7 of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters laid down significant Monsterverse lore, showing the moment Monarch finally revealed itself to the public (under hilarious circumstances) and how the organization's partnership with Apex Cybernetics began. I did not find May's long-awaited backstory super compelling, to be honest, I think because the proto-Apex company was so thinly sketched. And that Frost-Vark better not be dead. :(
An incredible three Godzilla comics released last week: DC/Legendary's Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong #3 and IDW's Godzilla: War for Humanity #3 and Godzilla Rivals: Jet Jaguar vs. Megalon. The crossover lit a certain section of the Internet on fire with the revelation that Godzilla did, in fact, kill Superman the previous issue. Writer Brian Buccellato chalked it up to Godzilla's atomic breath having "a radioactive signature similar to [K]ryptonite," which as handwaves go is pretty good. Behemoth and Scylla had moments to shine as well, and the issue ended with Lex Luthor discovering a Mechagodzilla eye. Glad Godzilla won't be the only Toho character in the comic; that would've been a bit lame.
Godzilla: War for Humanity remaining a thrilling read, and the Super MOGUERA debuting in this issue is not to be missed. Jet Jaguar vs. Megalon starts with a content warning for depiction and discussion of attempted suicide, which certainly surprised me. It's another strong issue, neither callous nor didactic, and told so efficiently there's plenty of room for the titular bout (which sometimes has felt like an afterthought in Rivals stories). Also, Jet Jaguar talks—something Toho forbade in a comic earlier this year, for whatever reason. Anyway, he's exactly the 'bot you would expect him to be. Hope IDW can keep him chattering in the future.
You've probably seen my flurry of posts already, but it bears repeating: The Boulet Brothers' Dragula, a drag reality competition found on Shudder, aired a kaiju episode. Reality TV isn't my bag, but I thoroughly enjoyed the competitors' kaiju-inspired costumes and performances. I also kept ping-ponging between awe that Americans are just expected to know what a kaiju is now and yelling at the hosts for, say, not naming any kaiju outside of Toho's Big Five.

Hot on the heels of the black-and-white re-release of Shin Godzilla comes Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color, which has to be the best title one of these things has gotten. As with Shin, this is no mere filter; each shot in the film was regraded, with director Takashi Yamazaki striving for "a style that looked like it was taken by masters of monochrome photography." It opens in Japan on January 12; no word yet on whether it will play in any other country.
Godzilla will follow in the steps of pop culture fixtures like The Lord of the Rings and Star Wars with Godzilla: The Official Cookbook by Kayce Baker, due from Titan Books on September 10. (You can tell it's official because he's actually on the cover.) 60 recipes lie within. It's a given that I'm going to buy something Godzilla-related that's this silly; I just have to pick up another cookbook first so it won't be the first one I ever own.
youtube
I was surprised to realize that McDonald's has never done anything Godzilla-related; far less prolific fast-food chains have worked with the monster, from White Castle to Carl's Jr. The first salvo in the campaign was pretty underwhelming—BE@ABRICK figures that can only be won via lottery, with an entirely plain Godzilla. That replica MogeGoji suit looked great in the ad, at least. Tokusatsu is being kept alive in the Godzilla franchise through some truly odd means. The follow-up ad/promo was a lot better, but that's a matter for next week's post.
This is at least kaiju-adjacent—James Wan's long-gestating The Call of Cthulhu movie seems to finally be going somewhere, as revealed in roundabout fashion by a Deadline article. I thought the 2005 silent version was just fine, but presumably this will be produced by his company Atomic Monster, which is long overdue for an actual giant monster movie.
I have loved Sterek since Stiles first entered the police car with Derek in the back, lived thru johnlock, and the Rusty Rebarb death. . .
And I don't mean to come off as aggressive, but can you explain how TW was queerbaiting if the whole jackson/twin survived? Maybe I don't understand the term? Or misunderstood it?
I thought queerbaiting was killing off your queer couples for the straight ships to take center stage?
Sorry, I am just so confused, and having left the TW fandom after season 4a probably doesn't help, but I think what confuses me, and maybe you can explain because you are good at it from previous posts, is what's the difference between queerbaiting and fans being mad their ship isn't cannon?
Sorry it's so confused, but thank you for your discourse
No problem.
Teen Wolf despite having canon queers didn't handle them the best. Cory and Mason were in the later half of the show so had better treatment than Danny ever did. Jackson only became involved with Ethan because both Colton Haynes and Charlie Culver had both come out publicly by season 6.
But this isn't about what was in the show. We can discuss the validity of Sterek in the narrative and if the marketing fed the crumbs all day long.
Here's the thing. It's complicated with Teen Wolf but you have to understand queerbaiting is a very specific term referring to marketing and engagement. Sterek is the blue print of early 2010's social media brand queerbait.
Wikipedia puts it this way:
Sterek was and is the most popular ship to emerge from Teen Wolf. It broke through the pop culture barrier and they leaned into it. Heavily.
I've talked about it on various posts before:
here.
here
here
here
There's a lot of context surrounding Sterek that gets lost these days. How fandom was engaged with and courted by the production. See the Sterek Campaign and Cookies for Sterek.
The infamous boat videos to get votes for teen choice awards. There are two of them. 1 and 2.
Like they even used the return of Stiles and Derek (explicitly together in the finale promo). I cannot overstate how this was a tactic to draw back viewers that had left fandom previously.
Time for my usual review of Matthew Goode's year. Every year I sit down to write these thinking - hmm - we didn’t see enough of Matthew Goode this year. [NEVER enough] But then each year I’m surprised by how busy he is. But this year we had several months of Goodey being MIA. How did we cope?
January -
You can tell I'm searching for 'news' when the biggest thing that happened in January was the release of a 13 year old interview with Matthew on the Ellen Show! Well it got us excited coz most of the old YouTubes of it had disappeared.
[📷 screenshot by @matthewgiggles - she did 1061 of these babies 👏] Oh and Matthew was robbed in the Critics Choice Awards for his performance in 'The Offer' . ROBBED!!! Oh well - at least he was nominated.
February -
Not a Goode month - I seriously couldn't find any Goode news in the archive.
March -
In March we got excited about Matthew playing either A RABBIT or a hedgehog (coz we will take ANYTHING during this drought) in a new animation 'Tally Ho' also known as 'Spiked'.
📷 @goodecollective Hoping Matthew plays Walter the rabbit coz that's a bigger part - but I guess he could be the older brother.
April -
We got our first look at Matthew filming 'Freud's Last Session' -
[📷 Mark Doyle/Splash News]
... and the first 'official' promo pics from Sony Pictures Classics -
... And, bizarrely, the Whitehead Railway Museum (a location for FLS) spilled the beans that we'd see this in December.
May -
We were starved of Goode news -
June -
I mean WTF happened in June?
By July -
We were starting to worry....
August -
Luckily some more FLS casting news started trickling out and we were READY.
Oh and some of Matthew's costumes for ADOW were up for auction - so hopefully some lucky fans are sniffing those as I write this -
In September -
We started getting little bit of buzz about Matthew being a contender for Best Supporting Actor Oscars. 😯
And then towards the end of the month - this happened -
youtube
Matthew and ex F1 World champ Jenson Button doing lots of outdoorsy stuff to promote Hackett London's Autumn Winter collection -
Hallelujah - proof of life at last!
As well as the vid we were treated to loads of gorgeous promo pics by Charlie Gray. 😍
October -
Started off about the devil game golf. Matthew played at the Dunhill Links golf tournament -
📷 Dunhill Links and 'Gaz the Caddie'
So great that @asgoodeasgold was there so we got some gorgeous pics. Check them out here -https://www.tumblr.com/asgoodeasgold/730860856364122112/im-so-glad-you-enjoyed-goodeywatch-thank-you?source=share
Then, at last, we got a sneaky look at 'Freud's Last Session' -
youtube
... and guess what? Matthew was SO goode.
The movie premiered at AFI Fest but sadly, due to the strike, we missed out on seeing Matthew there. The review started appearing and guess what - our guy did good. More than holding his own working with Sir Anthony Hopkins so who could ask for more?
November
The superlatives about Matthew's performance as C.S. Lewis kept on coming. AND Matthew was spotted in Seville with his mate Jenson again for yet another Hackett campaign...
📷 all from @RenegadeJFG Twitter.
December
OMG there has been so much Goode action I don't know where to start. Matthew packed with so many interviews, zooms and articles to promote 'Freud's Last Session'. Exhausting for Matthew and a bit overwhelming for fans - but I'm not complaining. Here's just few appearances -
Matthew's interviews gave us some fascinating insights to the type of human he really is and what he believes - as well as the usual fun, laughter and the constant 'non-verbal leakage' that he is SO aware of.
AND a few hints that he is in talks to reprise BOB!
We got the official trailer in December and 'Freud's Last Session' had a limited release in the US (L.A. and New York).
youtube
Matthew has continued to receive great reviews for his work in FLS and let's hope that directors and award voters sit up and take notice!
So what will the next year bring? Well - it's looking goode.
i've gotten a ton of stuff backed up to the natm search website. there's a TON of promos across all the different social medias, and it'll take a long while to archive them all. i guess the best place to start is here, since facebook is a hellhole.
so far, with the help of @pineapple-coffee and a few others along the way, i've got pages for merchandise, interviews, scripts, games, books, the theme park ride, the tiny tourists campaign, and some active searches.
the most buck wild things i've found are the promos. the tumblr is famously buck wild, but facebook is no exception. i mean, look at these.
come on, that first one isn't even fucking subtle.
towwn: don’t call ‘em resolutions! instead, we’re sharing a few long-term goals for 2024:
🏡declutter
🗑️reduce waste
👗make more sustainable fashion choices
that’s where @retoldrecycling comes in. the sustainable startup, recently featured on @sharktankabc, is on a mission to change our recycling behavior & eradicate textile-based landfills. sign up and receive a compostable bag to fill with items you’d like to unload 4x per year. simply send back the full bag to avoid stuff ending up in global landfills. retold sorts + repurposes everything via its partner network – thrift stores, charities, upcyclers + more.
we’ve also learned from our pals + animal welfare experts at the international animal rescue org @fourpawsusa that recycling isn’t just good for the environment, it benefits animals too. four paws’s #wearitkind campaign advocates recycling clothes + textiles to help keep new animal-based products out of the supply chain, as well as avoid pollution & deforestation that destroys habitats. a win for people + planet + animals.
now part of @mcuban’s investment portfolio, here are some key basics about retold:
retold accepts your best stuff (wedding dresses) or very old & worn items, including your dog’s blanket! most clean, dry household textiles/clothes are accepted, but not pillows or cushions.
the majority of materials are reused domestically. partners ensure that items sent overseas have value + purpose at their final destination.
as bags are received, customers get rewards: promo codes & offers from many sustainable brands, including @paradisperdusnyc, @vitaminaswim + @boody, which fashion ratings app @goodonyou gives high marks for eco-friendly, ethical practices & animal welfare.
by raising consciousness over what we throw away & just starting small – think: a retold bag in the laundry room ready for those solo socks – we can create easy recycling habits that become 2nd nature. subscribe to @retoldrecycling to get a jumpstart on your 2024 eco-intentions + follow @fourpawsusa to learn how you can support the #wearitkind pledge to reduce, refine and replace animal-based fashion with kinder, sustainable choices.
