Hiking

Before you even go hiking, here’s some ways to prepare:

Start hydrating three days before your hike. Trust me, you’ll feel much better the day of.

Trim your toenails so you don’t bash them against the inside of your boot, that shit hurts.

Essentials for your daypack:

More water than you think you’ll need.

Snacks! Lots of snacks! A good mixture of protein and carbs will keep you energized and satiated.

Navigation tools. Don’t rely on a phone; some places won’t have service. I recommend learning to utilize a compass and a map or investing in a satellite GPS.

Lighters and/or matches.

Headlamp or flashlight with extra batteries.

Sun protection, either in the form of a hat and/or sunscreen.

Layers for different weather scenarios.

First aid kit. Definitely bandaids, Ace bandage, neosporin, maybe even bug spray. I find tweezers are worth it.

Knife/multitool.

Emergency shelter, like a tarp or tent.

While on trail…

As soon as you feel a hot spot coming on, take care of it. Get it covered to prevent a blister from forming.

If you hike with a furry friend, keep them on leash, pack out waste, and make sure you check if a trail is pet-friendly.

Yield to uphill hikers so you don’t break their momentum. Bikers yield to hikers but everyone yields to horses.

Everything is just a little too loud today, the lights a little to bright. Saying Briar was a little overwhelmed was an understatement. There were a lot of things clogging his mind right now, but the most pressing thing at the current moment was how damn crowded this bubble tea place was at this moment of time.

They had come here for a small little treat for themselves with some of the spare yen they had, and to hopefully maybe get some studying in, but there were so many people that he was finding it a little hard to actually relax. They currently had their head resting on the table, nestled neatly in their folded arms and trying not to actually start crying from how overwhelmed they were, their cane leaning against their legs to keep it tucked out of the way.

Every once and a while, they would reach up to grab their cup, tucking it under their chest to get a drink of the boba without having to lift their head, before placing it back onto the table. He idly listened out at the people walking around him, ears twitching, just in case someone approached him. As much as he didn't want to talk to anyone he wasn't going to be rude, though he really hoped he'd be left be.

Unfortunately, it seems they're going to need to be social soon, the cafe IS pretty crowded...

i love the idea of soap having a big family but…he’s not all that close with them nowadays. in fact, it’s been ages since he’s seen the gaggle of cousins he used to play pretend with in the back garden or even in the woods. family reunions aren’t commonplace anymore because everyone is so damn busy or spread too far apart. his favorite cousin is living in the U.S doing something, Soap’s never tuned in to the technical speak, and the rest are all busy getting their degrees, focused on being part of the workforce, and/or making their own families.

Soap’s closest to his Ma and Pa. they video call at least twice a week when Soap’s not deployed, and he spams his parents with stupid memes and goofy videos at odd hours of the night. He’s close with his older sister, too, talking to her about once a week for a short amount of time. She updates him on his nieces and nephews, the cat he rescued but can’t keep on base, and any shocking gossip from their hometown. He’ll send her pictures of the animals he sees, occasionally will send her a funny post, and maybe once a quarter they meet up to have dinner and see a show.

He can’t remember the last time he hung out with his older brother, though. Maybe a year or two ago? Soap will text the fucker only to get a reply a few weeks or a month later, then it’s radio silence. His brother is like that with everyone, so Soap doesn’t take it personally (most of the time).

At first, Soap hated the change, hated the distancing his family went through. He thought he was losing everything and everyone, but he came to realize it’s not like that for the most part. The people he has in his life are there solidly and that’s what’s important. And when he brings you home for the first time, you’re not overwhelmed by his 16 first cousins, 12 second cousins, 3 aunts and 6 uncles, his Ma and Pa and sister and brother and all their kids. It’s a mellow evening, the closest adults in the family able to relax and get to know you while you do the same.

He wants that tight knit family with you one day. He wants your kids to know all the cousins, yes, but he also wants them to have the security of solid relationships with those closest to them. He wants them to know that even as family members pull away or seemingly vanish off the face if the earth, that there are still people who exist and love them, who share a million memories with them and will happily make a million more. He doesn’t want them to struggle with the feeling of losing security and love like he did.

Camping

I’d highly recommend putting together a couple of plastic bins. One for your kitchen, for sure.

Here’s a comprehensive list of things you might want to bring.

Starting with your kitchen bin:

Scrubbers and dish towels.

Campsuds soap. It’s eco friendly and won’t disrupt the natural flora or fauna if poured out on the ground.

Collapsible dish tub.

Plastic reusable plates, bowls, cups, and utensils. Hit up your local Dollar Tree for these.

Ladle, spatula, a can opener, and a big ass pan.

Seasonings and cooking spray.

Metal sticks for hot dogs and s’mores.

Something to start fires with for your campfire rings.

Mugs that won’t break.

Camp stove/portable cookware set and subsequent propane.

In another bin, here’s some items I’d recommend:

Portable fans (if you run hot) and lights (battery operated).

Sleeping bag, sleeping pad, tent, and camp blankets.

Puzzle piece foam flooring for the inside of your tent. It’s a game changer, trust me.

Camp chair and a hammock.

An outdoor rug/welcome mat for the entrance to your tent.

I highly recommend letting your friends name your plants at 3 in the morning. It's fun, and then you get a bunch of strawberries named for various Knights of Camelot and you also get to inflict psychic damage by saying things like "Lancelot is in flower" and "Mordred lies rotting on the ground".

Early afternoon in Eden was often one of the slower times of day, people in work, or in classes, or if you were really lucky, sleeping in late. The Medical district was always very busy no matter what time of day, someone was always getting injured somewhere, but there was always lulls.

Briar was very familiar with the Medical district. Being someone of poor health, and a diabetic to boot, he was in and out often, though today he was here for a class. Was being the key word. As he was idly at the bus stop, watching the flicker of the holo-ticker while waiting for his ride home, a sizable black car rolled to a stop in front of him, the low hum of the hover being cut off as it landed. An undistinguished man leaned out and asked if they were a doctor, and when they tried to answer that they were just a student, said it was good enough, practically grabbing them by the scruff and pulling them into the car.

Needless to say, this was probably one of the most terrifying moments of their life, but quickly, they were filled in on why they were needed.

A strange man was found and apprehended in the district bordering the Medical one, a man who seemingly showed signs of Florescent sickness. They needed a diagnosis to figure out what to do with him.

Briar was... Uneasy that they picked a student for that diagnosis but... At least he was very familiar with that sickness.

They don't know what building they're lead into, their vision mostly obscured by the man practically carrying them inside, though it was dark, and nondescript.

Their hooves echo on the tile, the room otherwise empty, leaving plenty of space for the sound to reverberate. A metal door stood in front of them, the dark dressed man moving forward to unlock it.

"You have as much time as you need to come to your conclusions. The patient is mostly passive, but did put up a small bit of a fight upon capture, keep on your toes." The man said simply, opening the door and gesturing for Briar to enter.

The room was just as dark as the rest of the building, but a faint white glow could be seen from the doorway. They... really didn't have any other choice so, donning a medical mask, they entered.

The room was just as sparse, a table and couple chairs, and a surface against the far wall with a few medical supplies scattered across the top, their ears folding down at the sight... It's a good thing they were just coming back from a class then...

"...Hello...?" They call out to the stranger. They know where he is, there was no way NOT to know but... They'd rather he allow himself to be known.
