SPOILERS FOR CATS 2019, here’s my hot takes and opinions

be warned, THIS IS LOOOONG

First off my overall opinion, i LITERALLY cannot say whether it was good or bad, like lots of critics say it just...is beyond that. It’s VERY fun and that’s all I can bring myself to say, I have LOTS of problems with it but I can’t even say that they make the movie bad. It is definitely worth watching

OPINIONS ON CHARACTERS:

Victoria: she’s good! I appreciate that they kinda left her personality blank other than her innocence since that’s pretty much how she always was, still not super thrilled with her as a main character but franchesca did the best she could

Munkustrap: I loved him! he was more of a main character than I would have expected, but they STILL cut all the charm from his lines... why do I love him then? Robbie fairchild did AMAZING background acting, whenever he was in frame he was always doing something SUPER munkustrap-y and making cute dad faces. he was dealt bad lines but he worked around it best he could. Also his legs were normal so...epic fail

Mistoffelees: 😒😒😒😒😒🤢🤢🤮 disappointed but not at all surprised...he was just a Woobie, a softboy uwu nice guy. I felt like I was seeing fanon 2013 loki in cat form. THEY MADE HIS SONG A SADBOY PITY PARTY SONG...WHY WOULD YOU MAKE THE 11 O’CLOCK NUMBER SLOW AND SAD???? Where is the smug little shit who’s vague and aloof yet confident and joyous? He was murdered by his evil homophobic shadow clone. I’m not even gunna indulge the fact that him and Victoria were a thing, I’ll go over that later. He also just constantly looked like the crying cat meme his eyes were so red and watery it was horrifying, yet somehow he wasn’t the worst character , that leads us too.....

tugger: what.the.fuck.did.you.do.to.this.boy. HE GOT THE TREATMENT I EXPECTED FOR MUNKUSTRAP! HE WAS DEMOTED TO BACKGROUND CHARACTER! not only did he not sing mr. mistoffelees, he literally did nothing other than his song, he never interacted with ANY characters besides jenny in 1 scene. I know cats has no set main characters but he’s undoubtedly one of the most important characters and he’s like...the least important named character in the movie. ALSO Jason Derulo was not sexy at all. There was NO hip thrusting NO sexy meowing NO glamrock, he was just an asshole and if I hadn’t already seen the original I would have either completely forgotten about his character or though he was the worst character. I’m so fucking angy I cannot express.

Girzzabella: ngl I expected better. Her acting was great but with the horrible effects I couldnt get invested but I’ll touch on the effects later. Her singing was good, but I expected it to carry the movie and it wasn’t at all the best song in the movie, I’d say she’s about as good as I expected she’d be but the movie itself was more enjoyable than I expected so she was less significant

Old d: she was fine, she LOOKED the part definitely, she didn’t have as large a presence as ken page but I wouldnt expect that of her. Her singing wasn’t the greatest though, her voice is fine by it’s just NOT suited to old d’s songs. I would have preferred she play a female gus bc her voice is very sweet and frail, not at all built for belting like her songs required.

Macavity: he’s just...eh. He’s basically a comic relief villain which sucks. He does practically nothing besides kidnap people, say a cheesy line, and act like a caricature of a 90s cartoon villain (and not one of the fun ones) like theres a scene where he poofs away and when he does it he goes, MACAvityyyyyyy and fades away its so unintentionally funny but it just makes him so lame as a villain. not to mention he doesnt even die at the end or get any satisfying conclusion he just gets stuck on top of a statue and his powers suddenly stop working (for some reason??)

Bombalurina: fuck that, I am simultaneously glad she only was in the macavity number bc fuck off Taylor Swift but also disappointed bc she deserved so much better.

Bustopher: 😟 never in my darkest nightmares did I think I’d see bustopher Jones deepthroat multiple crayfish but here we are. Somehow THIS was the most sexual song, I cannot begin to name the fetishes checked off by this performance bc itd hit word limit. Let me just say that I said multiple times out loud, “damn bustopher kinda a freak with it 😏😏” like I CANNOT stress how weirdly sexual it gets. And ofc its all otherwise just haha funney fat guy eat food and burp and fall down. He also breaks the fourth wall a few times which like, fuck you

Jenny: exactly what was shown in the trailer. Unfunny fat jokes and slapstick humor. Also they focused WAY too many shots on her cat pussy and I wish I was making that up. Also of note is that the cgi on the rats and cockroaches are drastically worse than the rest of the movie, like not just bad designs the effects are BAD. also they translated they whole gumbie cat fur-shedding as her wearing fake skin over her outfit which would be fine but UHH the fake fur is skin tight??? so it literally looks like shes ripping off her skin and she does it multiple times its fucking terrifying

Mungojerrie and rumpelteazer: meh, they are fine as characters, not quite as energetic as I would have liked but they didn’t massively fuck anything up? The song was horrible, they went against the beat for...some reason? Like it’s a song with a very distinct rhythm and they split up the lyrics so weirdly. I liked that they followed through with the lore of them working for macavity

Skimbleshanks: YES YESSSSSSSSSS HOLY FUCKING SHIT 💗💕💖💞💜😳😳😳😳😳😳😳💜💛🧡💚💖❤️💗 i absolutely CANNOT express how good skimbleshanks made me feel. He looks like a leather daddy with his chains and suspenders and hat and stache, I hate that I’m saying this but uh...mr skimbleshanks sir😳 we were actually screaming it was so fucking good. Watching this movie was worth it just for skimble. Unironically. I’m listening to the song as we speak. It was kinda weird that they moved the tap dancing to this song but that’s more of a detractor from Jennie’s and a plus side to skimbles since it’s good tap

Gus: good! Ian did a good job of course, no one doubted that he would.

Growltiger and griddlebone: not racist but still absolutely horrifying. One of the worst parts of the movie, I actually got squeamish looking at griddlebone a few times that’s how bad she looks

Everyone else: not that good. I couldn’t tell who was who, all their personalities were annoying, I’m on imdb as we speak trying to figure out who even was supposed to be who. Demeter is completely butchered and jemima just isn’t there, doesn’t sing her part, it all sucked man.

Tech talk:

CGI: okay so here’s the thing, the effects are good. GREAT even, the issue is how fucking horrible the designs are. The lack of cat nose, mouth, and hairy cheeks makes them all look disgusting. Also the feet. Holy fuck why do they have feet. THERES A FUCKING SCENE WHERE TUGGER GRABS VICTORIAS FOOT AND SNIFFS IT. IT LASTS LIKE 5 SECONDS. Old Deuteronomy, Gus, and Cassandra (bc she was already bald) are the only characters I’d say look anywhere close to decent, grizabella looks okay in profile but head on it’s all horrible again. its really such a shame bc the sets are gorgeous! i really hope this movie gets some form of recognition for its sets.

the editing and directing was DOGSHITTTTTTT there are SO many scenes where characters just teleport or parts where people are singing and no ones mouths are moving its really distracting

Other things:

it’s OBVIOUS that the critics calling this movie horny have never seen the original. I’d definitely say the movie is LESS HORNY than the play. It IS however waaaaaaay more uncomfortable with its hornieness, so I’d say in that regard YES, the horny stuff is much more gratuitous and off putting despite there being an overall smaller amount than the play. ie everything bustopher jones does

They changed a BUNCH of lyrics for some reason?? Like they cut verses which I understand but there are like a handful of lyrics in almost every song they just...change. like...okay? All changing lyrics is gunna do is make people who knew the songs frustrated when they can’t sing along

the dancing was incredible! shame the cg just fucking invalidates all of it bc your mind doesnt register it as real people doing real moves

WHY did they take 2 of the most iconic characters who FREQUENTLY interact and just

c. Completely change the personality of the other one

On the topic of Victoria/misto: I am just still at a loss as to why they thought it’d be a good idea? They completely removed Plato and for what? This? Pathetic. It’s worth noting the weirdly munkustrap has WAYYY more chemistry with both Victoria AND mistoffelees then they did with each other (there’s a part where it looks like misto and munk are about to kiss for some reason?? munk ALSO gets all touchy feely with skimbleshanks???) anyways munkustrap king moments

tldr; its worth watching, the best parts were the sets, the dancing, skimbleshanks, and munkustrp fucking CARRIES the weight of the world with his face acting. the worst things were a big fat tie between bustopher, tugger,misto,jenny,growltiger and griddlebone, and the godawful design choices

She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, Season 4, Episode 11, First Impressions!

This is all going to end in tears. Again.

So! Here’s everything I saw coming:

King Micah being on Beast Island

Entrapta not being in danger but actually thriving

Glimmer joining forces with Light Hope to gain control of the core energy

Scorpia and her runestone being the key

Here’s what I didn’t see coming:

Beast Island itself

So hey, with Beast Island being hyped for a couple seasons now, I was expecting it to be kind of like the jungle equivalent of the Crimson Waste. You know, all cartoonified prehistoricy with random bones, volcanoes and geysers everywhere, dinosaurs probably, and semi-feral tribes made up of those imprisoned there.

Instead, what we got was so much scarier. It kind of reminded me a little of Nightmareland from Little Nemo in Slumberland (anyone else remember that?), a horrific place corrupted by the First Ones’ dumped tech, where a never-ending signal slowly drains your will to keep going until you succumb and become part of the island itself.

Yikes.

Fortunately, King Micah is alive after all! I mean, the AU where he suddenly seemed to regain his memories right before disappearing did sort of confirm it, and Beast Island is pretty much the only place he could have been. Though I wonder how much the Horde knows about him being there. Shadow Weaver seemed to think he was dead. Was she lying or was Hordak keeping her in the dark as well? Hell, maybe not even he knows that Micah is there.

Regardless, Micah’s done pretty okay for himself. Sure, he’s a little weird and addled due to having to survive all by himself on literally the worst place on the planet, separated from his family and no one else to talk to while a droning signal constantly tells him to give up. So yeah, it’s actually kind of surprising he can still hold intelligent conversations! Good going, dude.

Also, Etheria seems to have a ton of giant bugs all over the place. Are big bugs the dominant predators like big mammals are over here?

I’m curious about that signal. Is it a weapon that is malfunctioning and got dumped? A Horde addition to keep anyone from escaping? Another AI, perhaps even Mara’s Light Hope? Something totally different?

Anyway, of course Entrapta would be just fine. I mean, they dropped her into what’s essentially a First Ones’ junkyard. That’s like trying to exile a cat into a catnip field! If she had a little longer, she would have probably turned the whole place into its own self-functioning robot city! Anyway, I am so very glad she’s back.

Also, this was the pookas from the original show.

Kind of a far cry from the demon cats we saw, huh?

On Glimmer’s end, she’s pretty much about to pull her equivalent of Catra activating the portal, and it will not go well. Also, Scorpia’s the key to the core energy! Remember how the Black Garnet responded to her presence in her solo episode. Well, I’m betting that Glimmer teleports her into the Fright Zone and makes her reestablish her connection to her family’s runestone. When that (or whatever they end up doing) happens, here’s what I see occurring:

Etheria going back online and is pulled out of Despondos, right into Horde Prime’s hands.

Shadow Weaver backstabs Glimmer and takes the power for herself, and either goes rogue or hands Glimmer over to Hordak or Horde Prime.

Glimmer attempts to use the core energy to destroy the Fright Zone, but it creates this season’s cataclysm.

Regardless, she’s getting captured. Yeah, I saw that picture of her and Catra locked up together, having a heart to heart. So now I’m mainly curious over who’s jail cell that is, who pulled the coup on Catra, and exactly who is in charge of the Horde when all is said and done. And oh yeah, I thirst for that scene.

That having been said, there’s been something bothering me about this season, something that’s made me like it marginally less than the previous two arcs, especially the second arc that comprised season two and three, which was pure poetry. And I couldn’t really figure for a while, but now I think I realize what my issue is.

And it’s I just miss the way things used to be.

I miss the Best Friends Squad. I miss how Adora, Bow, and Glimmer would joke, banter, bicker, fight, freak out, support each other, and watch each other’s backs. I don’t like the rift between Adora and Glimmer. I want them all to be together again.

I miss the Super Pals Trio. I miss Scorpia well-intentionally being super awkward while crushing on Catra. I miss Entrapta’s antics perplexing everyone until they end up doing something amazing. I miss Catra being the tsundere of the group.

I miss the Lab Partners. I miss Hordak trying to pull his “BWAH! I AM SUPERIOR AND YOU MUST FEAR ME!” and getting all perplexed and intrigued when it has no effect at all. I miss them working on projects together and Hordak slowly going from condescending and snotty to genuinely admiring her. I miss Entrapta being delightfully helpful in her quirky way. Yeah, I know Hordak’s evil and needs to pay for everything he’s done, but I really did get something special out of their relationship.

But most of all, I miss Angella. I started rewatching the series to pass the time at work, and just seeing Angella again really drove a stake into my heart. I didn’t realize how much I appreciated her until she was gone, and now I just want her back. Yes, I know it’s iffy over whether or not she’s really gone and might come back, and to be honest I’m not sure I want her to come back after how beautiful her send-off was, but I still really miss her.

Hell, I even miss the old Shadow Weaver! Or rather, I miss having something utterly despicable on which to focus all my hate. I know she’s up to something and will probably be back to her own tricks, but she’s been kind of neutral this whole season.

And yes, I do love DT and really like Micah, but DT isn’t around that much anymore and doesn’t really interact with people other than Catra, and Micah only just showed up.

And understand, this isn’t a criticism, it’s just an observation! Taking all those things that we loved from the previous seasons was very much a deliberate creative decision, and a good one at that! I love Catra’s mental deterioration arc, I love Glimmer’s fall into Dark Glimmer, I love all the little plots and how they’re coming together, it’s great writing!

But that doesn’t mean I still don’t miss the things that made me happy.

I will say this though: I unironically liked Swift Wind in this episode.

Now that I'm reaching the halfway point with Desolation Row:

That's really where the fun part begins. Karen Starr gets to be a rather more consistently there character with this half, as with her relationship with Death, which will be evolving different to it with the magic fam, and will build on things I've done in the Death Cycle with the Death/Karen relationship there.

In particular for Karen it ends up circling back to her being the last survivor of an entire extinct multiverse, with literally nobody left. And for Death, who has very, very few people who actually want to be around her knowing who she is, someone who knows, who saw her at the lowest possible point and wants her anyway, without having the obligatory aspects of family is basically catnip.

Kara and Lena Luthor are also going to play a bigger role in the second half, as Kara and Karen have a kind of sibling relationship and Kara, for understandable reasons, is somewhat protective of Karen given they are cross-time parallels of each other.

Beyond all this, of course, is Endless family dysfunction, and the ways that Delirium's debt, and what that turns into with her and Death's sibling relationship in this particular AU, and Destruction's whole 'oops I kind of lived up to my function a bit too much' complex ends up with, as well.

I've done the whole 'Death and Dream relationship strained to or past a breaking point' thing in In Much Wisdom, this work isn't one that relies on that trope. It will, however, have a bit of a mirror to the other story in that being confronted with something much like some of the things he does in his more sadistic moods done by someone else with access to his powers actually forces Dream to begin to reassess things and to grow as a person for the better.

The family drama in this one is mostly saved for Destruction, who's made his own aspects of it and laid the groundwork for that.....and for Destiny, who belatedly has a few realizations and equally belatedly starts working to correct them. Unlike the In Much Wisdom case, here Death's actions were rooted in blissful ignorance by virtue of the forced amnesia meaning she has neither context nor any particular knowledge of why her family freaked out.

And of course she ended up fighting a war with Hell and 'winning' with Lucifer's part of the story far from done and the cosmic hierarchy slightly shaken by what was, in the end, a set of misguided decisions that spiraled out of control because Lucifer got lazy with intrigue from complacency and overshot something thinking that there was a moment of genuine opportunity that misfired. It's more of a case of 'didn't think things through fully from phoning it in' but it still counts, and the loss of multiple high-level Hell lords and the effects of that, plus things not seeming quite as certain, are going to be shaping events, too.

Plot Bunny: Alpine AU SNS

Summary: Naruto is a fresh-faced botanist who just recently moved to a (sizeable) mountain town to join a research team on ecology in alpine climate. He’s there because they want to build a tree nursery for the rare alpine plant species and study the effect of climate change on smaller shrubs and flowers, and Naruto is renown in the field for being able to grow and culture anything no matter how picky the plant is. Sasuke just finished his vet training and is setting up his practice. His family doesn’t really understand why he was hell-bent on specializing in wild and exotic animals and moved to a mountain town where, frankly, there’s just nothing much going on and not much money to make. But honestly, his massive childhood tantrum to get a pet snake should have told them everything they need to know. Then one fateful day Sasuke gets a call. They just catch a strange looking wolf not seen before in the area and they need a vet to check it out. The ground they found the creature on is the University's open-aired tree nursery. Detail:

- Naruto and Sasuke are in their thirties because, you know, it takes time to have the careers they have.

- This is Naruto first long-term job after jumping between postdoc positions, so he had been a bit of a nomad previously. That's part of why he lives in a small apartment and drives a third-handed pick-up truck. His most precious possession is an orchid he helped cultivated and was given by the professor as a gift.

- His ability to grow anything is nicknamed 'The Uzumaki effect.' However, he's terrible with animals. Even a chihuahua would bite him.

- Sasuke, on the other hand, was called a Disney Princess by his brother Itachi because he has the uncanny ability to deal with animals. Some of his vet friends called him 'the Messiah' since he tends to be the only one who is able to deal with their tricky and aggressive patients.

- That was also why he got called to the University to deal with the wolf. They tried to sedated it after they captured it, but the thing just won't go to sleep and tries to bite everyone. Kiba, who's an animal rescuer told them to call Sasuke since they couldn't safely give the wolf anymore sedative without the risk of overdosing and killing it.

- Kiba is married to Hinata, who runs an animal sanctuary. They take in mostly wild and exotic animals and sometimes animals that people should have known better to not keep as pet, like, Kiba's wolf-dog Akamaru who's just a tad too much on the wolf side to be in a family home. Both of them know Sasuke because he's their favourite vet for the animals.

- And so, Naruto and Sasuke meet for the first time on their mission to get the wolf out of the University ground and to Hinata's place so it can recuperate. They instantly click as a team, and Naruto gets pretty excited since this is the first time he deals with animal and doesn't get bitten.

- And Naruto might have developed a crush on Sasuke because he's calm and patient and just super cool in Naruto's eyes.

- Sasuke, on the other hand, has a bit of a headache with Naruto since he gets a little too excited and makes the animal anxious.

- Naruto calls the wolf Kurama and likes to visit him at Hinata's place. They find out later that he's weird looking with strange-colored furs because he's a wolf-dog from an unintentional cross breeding. So they are reluctant to set him free, although he's very aggressive due to never having contact with human before and is at risk of being put down.

- Naruto is so upset by that. He phones up Sasuke to ask if there is anything he can do to help Kurama. Sasuke honestly don't think there's an option because Kurama is too aggressive to be adopted. Even Akamaru is not that bad and pretty much only Kiba or Hinata can handle him.

- But Naruto isn't going to take no for an answer, so he asks Sasuke to teach him how to bond with animals so he can, hopefully, be friends with Kurama and adopt him. Sasuke thinks this is a terrible plan, but he lets Naruto come in to help in his clinic anyway.

- Naruto gets super down when he meets Karin, Sasuke's head nurse and business partner, because he thinks she's Sasuke's girlfriend. Karin laughs like a hyena when she finds out because, no, Sasuke is so gay there isn't a chance in hell that would have happened.

-With Naruto, though...

- Naruto is probably the worst volunteer in the clinic, even with domestic pets and animals. Sasuke and Karin have to spend quite a lot of time to train him to handle animals and to be calm with them so the animals don't freak out.

- After a while, Sasuke thinks Naruto should try fostering, and that is when he discovers that Naruto's apartment is so small it can't handle a chihuahua, let alone a wolfdog. And he tells the blond to buy a house with a yard if he's really serious about keeping Kurama. Worst case scenario, he would need to build a cage out there because Kurama might never be tamed enough to live in a house.

- But student loan? Naruto's really uncomfortable with the idea of getting into a new batch of debt when he's still paying off the old one.

- Karin suggests that Sasuke should rent his basement to Naruto since he just got himself straddled with a mortgage and could use another stream of income to help with that anyway. Also, Sasuke's house has a nice yard.
