The Jewel Net of Indra -TA
There are several aspects of Indra’s Net, that signify it as a crystal clear allegory of reality:
1. The Holographic Nature of the Universe
Long before the existence of the hologram, the jeweled net is an excellent description of the special characteristic of holograms: that every point of the hologram contains information regarding all other points. This reflective nature of the jewels is an obvious reference to this.
This kind of analogy has been suggested by science as a theory for an essential characteristic of the cosmos, as well as as the functioning of the human brain, as beautifully described inThe Holograpic Universe by Michael Talbot.
2. The Interconnectedness of All Thingss
When any jewel in the net is touched, all other jewels in the node are affected. This speaks to the hidden interconnectedness and interdependency of everything and everyone in the universe, and has an indirect reference to the concept of “Dependent Origination” in Buddhism. Additionally, Indra’s Net is a definitive ancient correlate of Bell’s Theorum, or the theory of non-local causes.
3. Lack of a substantive self
Each node, representing an individual, simply reflects the qualities of all other nodes, inferring the notion of ‘not-self’ or a lack of a solid and real inherent self, as seen in the Advaita Vedanta school of Hinduism and Buddhism in general.
4. Non-locality
Indra’s Net shoots holes in the assumption or imputation of a solid and fixed universe ‘out there’. The capacity of one jewel to reflect the light of another jewel from the other edge of infinity is something that is difficult for the linear mind, rational mind to comprehend. The fact that all nodes are simply reflections indicates that there is no particular single source point from where it all arises.
5. Innate Wisdom
The ability to reflect the entirety of all light in the universe attests to the inherent transcendant wisdom that is at the core of all nodes, representing all sentient beings, and to the inherent Buddha Nature.
6. Illusion or Maya
The fact that all nodes are simply a reflection of all others implies the illusory nature of all appearances. Appearances are thus not reality but a reflection of reality.
7. Universal Creativity
A familiar concept in various high dharmas is one of an impersonal creative intelligence that springs forth into reality through the instruments of all living beings.
8. The Mirror-like Nature of Mind
The capacity to reflect all things attests to the mind being a mirror of reality, not its basis. This is a common thesis among various schools and religions.

“Then Universally Good also said to the assembly, ‘In the land masses of this ocean of worlds are seas of fragrant waters, as numerous as atoms in unspeakably many buddha-fields. All beautiful jewels adorn the floors of those seas; gems of exquisite fragrances adorn their shores. They are meshed with luminous diamonds. Their fragrant waters shine with the colors of all jewels. Flowers of all kinds of gems swirl on their surfaces. Sandalwood powder settles on the bottom of the seas. They emanate the sounds of Buddhas’ speech. They radiate jewellike light. Boundless enlightening beings, holding various canopies, manifest mystic powers causing the adornments of all worlds to appear therein. Stairways of ten kinds of precious substances are set out in rows, with balustrades of ten kinds of jewels surrounding them. White lotuses ornamented with jewels, as many as atoms in four continents, are spread over the waters, in full bloom. There are unspeakable hundreds of thousands of billions of trillions of banners of ten precious elements, banners of belled gauze of raiments of all jewels, as many as sand grains in the Ganges river, jewel flower palaces of boundless forms, as many as sand grains in the Ganges river, a hundred thousand billion trillion lotus castles of ten precious substances, forests of jewel trees as many as atoms in four continents, networks of flaming jewels, as many sandalwood perfumes as grains of sand in the Ganges, and jewels of blazing radiance emitting the sounds of Buddhas’ speech…”

The various sutras were originally composed in Sanskrit and compiled and translated into Chinese in the 5th century CE. Thomas Cleary’s English translation is based on the Chinese translation done by the Khotanese monk Shikshananda (652-710 CE), who translated it at the request of the Tang Empress. 
I stumbled upon this sutra in the back of a book that included a ‘glossary of buddhist terms’ while at a Zen meditation retreat. Flower cosmology? That sounds like my shit. Since I didn’t have my phone I wrote the name down on a piece of paper and slipped it into my backpack. It really is as incredible as I imagined it to be.

Far away in the heavenly abode of the great god Indra, there is a wonderful net which has been hung by some cunning artificer in such a manner that it stretches out infinitely in all directions. In accordance with the extravagant tastes of deities, the artificer has hung a single glittering jewel in each "eye" of the net, and since the net itself is infinite in dimension, the jewels are infinite in number.
There hang the jewels, glittering "like" stars in the first magnitude, a wonderful sight to behold. If we now arbitrarily select one of these jewels for inspection and look closely at it, we will discover that in its polished surface there are reflected all the other jewels in the net, infinite in number. Not only that, but each of the jewels reflected in this one jewel is also reflecting all the other jewels, so that there is an infinite reflecting process occurring.
The Buddha in the Avatamsaka Sutra's 30th book states a similar idea:
If untold Buddha-lands are reduced to atoms,
In one atom are untold lands,
And as in one,
So in each.
The atoms to which these Buddha-lands are reduced in an instant are unspeakable,
And so are the atoms of continuous reduction moment to moment
Going on for untold eons;
These atoms contain lands unspeakably many,
And the atoms in these lands are even harder to tell of.
Book 30 of the sutra is named "The Incalculable" because it focuses on the idea of the infinitude of the universe and as the cosmos is unutterably infinite, and hence so is the total scope and detail of knowledge and activity of enlightenment.
In another part of the sutra, the Buddhas' knowledge of all phenomena is referred to by this metaphor: The Buddhas know all phenomena come from interdependent origination.
They know all world systems exhaustively. They know all the different phenomena in all worlds, interrelated in Indra's net.

The Homunculi Needed A Stronger Theme To Them.
I think it's fair to say that the majority of players were a bit underwhelmed with the homunculi. Something about their designs is just less striking as enemies of past games.
The angels take their inspiration from biblically accurate sources and they seem to be made of marble and gold like statues you find in sacred building hiding their monstrous flesh underneath. And the demon enemies are both mechanical and organic seeming to have been crafted from torture devices.
And the homunculi are... goop. Like they're just goop with shapes on them. Even their names are less striking. The angels and demons, at least the enemy types, take their names from virtues and vices of humanity respectfully showing their ties to the human world. Meanwhile the homunculi are named after clouds for some reason...
We don't even learn how their made, or hell even really why Singularity made them. Like all that potential Rodin set up in the beginning comes off as just him talking out of his ass.
"They're part human." Well what does that mean? Are they made from humans? Do they have some aspect of humanity about them?
"They'll get their hands on enough power to wipe out the whole trinity in a snap." Is that what Singularity even wanted? Why would he? How is he even doing this? A lot of this goes unexplained, or its explained in codex entries which means the writers were to lazy to explain it through the story proper.
I was reading through the wiki hoping to find some better explanation and honestly I feel like they may be giving the homunculi too much credit.
" many of the Homunculi draw heavy inspiration from Hindu and Buddhist motifs, such as lotus flowers and prayer beads, fitting their goal of "rebirthing" the universe. Their interconnected nature with Singularity also harkens to the Buddhist concept of Indra's Net, which is an envisioning of existence as a spider's web like brocade of reflective jewels, indicating not just the interconnectedness of living beings, but of alternate universes and existences."
"Alternately, due to their villainous and antagonistic nature, as with the Angels and Demons of the Bayonetta universe, they may also highlight the malign attributes of negative human traits; from their nirvana/atman-esque nature also drawing upon perversion of religion into self-serving cults and sects claiming to have "the only ultimate truth and knowledge of the universe"."
Like... I'm sorry but if that was Platinum's intent then it just doesn't come through in the story proper. But I'm willing to concede that may just be for a western audience unfamiliar with these concepts. If anyone who grew up with these stories and icons got that from the Homunculi I guess more power to them but it should have been stronger in the writing to get those ideas across to the player.

I wanted to go create a storm, and so I did. I travelled far away to somewhere I felt resonating, and there…
Bliss. Perfection. This is the state that has no feeling, no opinions may penetrate it, it simply is - yet it is ecstatic, oh, I am ecstatic, I am myself again! Re-equpped with understanding older than ages, older than the boundaries I put around myself, I spread into the sky. It is one thing to instantaneously summon clouds and rain above my Astral house, another to weave into it as the body slow and heavy and weighted. It is a process of a re-expansion of the concept predating the nervous system into the body that calls and waits for you, it is sliding into yourself from one self to another. It is bliss, it is the recognition of the Self in what eludes you in the guise of Other.
The other body. The self. Understanding.
That isn’t the important bit. Pay no attention to the Eye of the Storm hung inside the expanding basket star influence, the centrepiece, the self-crowned, pay no attention to his childlike bliss. Instead, watch the top of the sky open up to the bottom of the Abyss. Watch the draining of a great lake. Here, for the first time this life - or at least since post-despair - I called upon the wind too, the raging messengers.
Lev reconnects me with the spirits of wind, his horses. Oh, the rushing of controlling those bodies, the internal herd, the coalescence of the flock manifested. The divine racing of five hundred eyes, the extension of the God into the congregation. The wind howls as the horses race and I race inside them, the eye of the storm and its twisting extended into myriad arms of white winding tendrils, the force of the wind whipping against the ground unseen.
Slowly, Lev reintroduces me to my old arsenal and allies. I feel myself. I feel unified, torn apart, I feel pleasure, I feel pain, I feel the spectrum. I feel nothing and all that I am. The wind, the rain, the clouds; the lines, the gravitational cores, the speaking, Indra’s jewelled net. The waters of the sky pour down.
I never let go anymore, I am never able to let myself pass through bliss, I am a fort constructed of thought, my lightning repurposed as flails to beat the self. But here I knew that I knew what I knew, this was something that I had done more times than I have been alive and if I trusted that, knew that, then I would be able to let go and pass from consciousness into pure instinct and the storm would still form around me, the apsara and the horses would still circle and hear me, and so I let go.
Lev whistles to call me home. He was watching, leaning against the old wood of a house, I think. He was humming and watching as he does… But, home. The sinking of the clouds, the flight of the golden beaming sun beneath black clouds, the rain following snake lines… Home again. To the human body.

ROBERT KELLY | THE PEARL DIVER AND OTHER STORIES

Opening Reception for the Artist: Friday, September 1, 5-7 PM
There are stories everywhere. The story of the artist. The story of the magpie. The story of the stone on the beach. The story of the painting. The story of the goddess. The story of the buried city. The story of the sun-bleached bone. And our own story – which itself is really the weave of a thousand thousand stories, flaring out, radiating around us, brushing up against the other stories of the world.
But often enough, we don’t hear them, don’t notice. Get tangled in noise, lose the thread. This is when sometimes the world reaches out to us, offering a spark, a reminder. It might be a crow landing at your feet. It might be a particular stone on a beach.
It might be a painting: Aging paper, layered, overlaid, ghosted with images and text; cut, covered, framed and highlighted by thick, sensuous black geometric forms. Through the yellowed layers, a strangely winged figure emerges. Around him, half-revealed, half-concealed by those black forms, strange shapes and unknowable words.
This is The Pearl Diver, one of the pieces included in the eponymous exhibition, The Pearl Diver and Other Stories which brings Santa Fe native, Robert Kelly, back to New Mexico with his first exhibition here since 2012. This exhibition includes works from several different themed series (Mimesis, Tales of Lakshmi, Boneyard, Nocturne, El Senor, and Ash to Ash) though all of these are created with Kelly’s unique process.
This starts with a canvas surfaced, layer by layer, with up to 30 strata of paper, coated and affixed with a viscous polymer, gridded at right angles, and then overlaid with the special old, archival papers that Kelly finds and collects on his travels. These papers can be old movie posters, advertisements, handbills, newsletters, placards, announcements. Often, they are printed with text in a variety of languages. These papers are always faced backward so that their surface is facing toward the verso. This, as Kelly says, is “history looking back on itself, like Vermeer painting himself, painting the woman in the window.” Finally, the piece is glazed with an oil-based medium, and then it is ready for Kelly’s oil painting of forms. The geometric forms themselves are exquisitely precise. Balanced tonally with the faded paper surfaces and yet completely integrated and responsive to the complex patterns that have been gridded and aligned beneath. There is an intricate dialogue at work between the forms and the layers, between past and present.
Metaphors abound: History’s enigma. Time’s cipher. Collage. Archeology. Palimpsests. Ghosts. Phantom limbs. The strata of a cliff-face reading off geological ages. Stone masons. Stories. And each of these metaphors is not exclusive of the others, but rather, interconnected, as in the Buddhist metaphor of Indra’s net. This net is a vast, universe-spanning web with a multifaceted jewel (or pearl) at each connection point. Each jewel in the net contains the reflection of every other jewel. And each reflected jewel contains the reflections of all the others. Infinite. A representation of how all phenomena in the universe are connected and interpenetrating.
Multifaceted and nuanced as they are, there are many ways to know Kelly’s work. Kelly’s modernist sensibilities hail back to influences such as Bauhaus, De Stijl, the Constructivists, the Supremacists. Kelly finds himself fascinated by a sort of seamless meeting place between the “high-minded formalism” of Mondrian and the “soulful purity” of Morandi. However, Kelly’s roots in New Mexico could offer nearly as important a perspective on his work. The region’s layered history is palpable in its architecture and landscape. And beyond even the human history there is a significance, a something more, that seems to resonate in its natural light and colors.
This is where the experience of Kelly’s work distills toward essences. With global references and sources, with sensibility meeting precision of skill, perhaps what pulls the viewer closer is something both unique and universal. Kelly has said, “Finding a stone (on a beach walk) draws our attention through form, shape, polish and substance, and suggests a connectivity created by this momentary flash of recognition. A pause. Paintings call at us this way….”
Stories. The work of Robert Kelly offers us reminders of connectivity, pulling us back into a world of meaning, where even the most mundane objects and experiences are freighted with significance. Without being in any way narrative or figurative, these paintings act as jewels in the net – the many layers, stories, refracting, reflecting. They remind us of the mystery and complexity of the world, and of our own stories, our place within the web.

Another theology question. What do you do with overlapping gods? Does, for example, Zeus rule over thunder happening in Greece, and Thor in the Nordic regions, or is it more complicated than that?
oh good question.
yeah, i think it's much more complicated. needless to say this is another long one.
i believe there are layers to this. i believe yes and no, neither and both. basically, i believe they are the same god. but they are different cultural expressions of what is essentially the same deity. they are different modes/aspects/instances/iterations/"masks" of the same god. like you can have two different groups of friends who you interact with totally differently and share different parts of your history and personality with each and all that. and each group of friends will come away with different understandings and impressions of who you are. and maybe there's a lot of overlap, but maybe there's a lot of difference too. in their minds you may as well be two different people. but you're not. you're the same person. just these two different groups of people have interfaced with you in two different ways.
there are deeper, more general "truths" and then there are more particular, provisional truths. in some "higher" sense i might acknowledge that the two gods are really the same god. but in a more provisional sense i will recognize them as distinct. so if i was a greek visiting scandinavia and i see a thunderstorm i might privately recognize it as zeus but publicly i might recognize it as thor. i might privately make an offering to zeus and then publicly make offerings to thor.
just like if i was a member of one of the aforementioned friend groups (say we're very casual) and i went to a party hosted by the other friend group (they're very formal) and i saw our mutual friend there but he was acting very different (formal) from how he acts around /my/ friend group (casual) i'm not gonna act around him the way we normally would. i would respect him, how he's expressing himself in this context, his other friends, and their relationship with each other by playing along. it's not a perfect analogy but i think it gets the point across. the two different gods are virtually two distinct persons though they might share the same underlying essence. if you come from a christian background you can maybe think of it as similar to the trinity.
you can recognize in a very intellectual, theological way that they're ultimately the same gods while also recognizing their distinction in every day life. i think there is a lot of value in recognizing them as distinct. part of the appeal of polytheism is in the diversity and variety of gods and beliefs and in the tensions between them. i mean, i believe we can go all the way to the top and say that all gods are ultimately the same in some sense since they are all emanations derived from the same ultimate source-god. but i can recognize that while also recognizing and appreciating all of the diversity in the day-to-day. and i think treating them all as the same is kinda boring. it's one of my main issues with monotheism. i believe the gods can be the same or different depending on perspective. like indra's net. a net with infinite glittering, multi-faceted jewel at every vertex reflecting all of the other infinite jewels. i think it's a beautiful representation of the gods and their interrelatedness.
and along this same train of thought, it's important to keep in mind the gods aren't static or isolated beings. they are dynamic and interconnected. gods were and are syncretized and conflated all the time. even the same god can have many different titles/roles/expressions. and many gods have overlapping domains. that sorta gets into my belief that the universe is really organized more like a republic than a (god's) kingdom, with power-sharing and interplay in all different directions.
i also personally believe it's different in cases like you mentioned (with thor and zeus) which are both indo-european gods and then syncretisms with more distantly foreign gods (like hermes and thoth for example). the genetic/cultural proximity of zeus and thor makes their syncretism a lot smoother than something like hermes and thoth because they are so much more genetically/culturally distant. not saying it isn't possible. a lot of gods in indo-european pantheons are assumed to have non-indo-european origins. but through many years of assimilation and incorporation and syncretism they've basically been "naturalized" as a part of the pantheon. i don't really think "naturalization" is required for fellow indo-european pantheons. or if it is, it's a very small, almost negligible amount.
again, i think there is good in recognizing difference. it is my belief that many thousands of years ago all these different groups of people in the world had these theological flashpoints, so to speak. this is where all of these different groups of people more or less spontaneously developed a relationship with their own particular gods, who arose from the genius of the people and their land. and i think that's special. that is a special relationship. those are /their/ gods and these are /our/ gods. and i think it's worth appreciating. i think the gods are expressions of the spirit and culture of a given people. the world is full of a beautiful tapestry of people, races, nations, ethnicities, cultures, etc. yeah you can say "we're all human! we're all the same!" yeah but that's not /all/ we are. we are the same in one level (us all being human) but there are many different dimensions of difference too and that's not a bad thing to recognize. and in that same vein, i don't want to erase the differences between different peoples' particular gods.
i don't think some god of thunder in some far corner of africa or south america or polynesia is effectively the same god as thor or zeus. just because they might have overlapping domains doesn't mean they're identical. much like the fbi, the secret service, us marshals, state police, municipal police, border patrol, game wardens, and sheriffs are all basically law enforcement with often overlapping jurisdictions and even often work together but they are definitely distinct and have different roles or missions and different relationships with each other and with the people, etc.
best to get comfortable with complexity and contradiction!

In accordance with the extravagant tastes of deities, the artificer has hung a single glittering jewel in each "eye" of the net, and since the net itself is infinite in dimension, the jewels are infinite in number. There hang the jewels, glittering "like" stars in the first magnitude, a wonderful sight to behold. If we now arbitrarily select one of these jewels for inspection and look closely at it, we will discover that in its polished surface there are reflected all the other jewels in the net, infinite in number.
