The past few days I watched Ergo Proxy and I'm not sure how to feel about it. There were some interesting concepts, some interesting episodes and characters with growth but after about episode 18 they start cramming an awful lot of story into a lot of disjointed episodes with the final two being a jumble of tying up loose ends.
All the foreshadowing or easter eggs in symbolism, names and quotes makes it feel more layered than it is. The fact is that even after all this time we have little anchoring to Vincent, who he is and what his strengths and flaws are. He makes very few choices for himself instead being propelled forward by stuff that happens to him so we don't get to see much of the guy. He gives Re-L the gun that can kill him, he chooses to engage with Pino once he accepts that human sentience isn't the only sentience, beyond that we're told he's a generally good guy but doesn't seem that fazed by the death of a city and how he'll treat the returning creators and other proxies is unclear, guess they're trying to say that he'll decide when he meets them and always be fighting dualing instincts (even though he supposedly killed off that part of his identity) but I felt disconnected from his journey and the stakes in general by the end.
I would have enjoyed the various excursions into his psyche if we'd been given some kind of insight into who Vincent truly wants to be as a person beyond the fantasy of being someone else.
I didn't mind changes in pacing and tone, the surrealism and the slow doling out of lore but as we got towards the end, it started to feel like the time was being mismanaged between the surreal, the riddles and 'piece the unexplained situation together' type episodes. I'd lost patience with the format by the end.
How to explain : I don't mind having to figure out how the world works, I do mind having to try to understand character motivations working backwards.
The final episode has three different Monads, two Re-ls, Vincent is not just himself but two or three personas, Raul and Dedalus have goals of destruction, creation or just madness idek it's messy. It would have been interesting for the city to be around and in conflict with the new arrivals.
There were themes of fate and making your own destiny somewhere in there.
Now, that's not to say it's bad, it's actually a very decent story for teens and adults. It just didn't find the right balance in the final act.
I'd recommend it if you like thoughtful moody anime. The visuals are very nice (so much better than cgi anime or pan n scan anime) but Re-l's nose seems to be a different lengths on her face in different moments.
She's an engaging character, I really liked that she was sheltered, selfish and disconnected from her heart while being very capable in other areas. Her finding her balance and faith was a great payoff in the mess of the final episodes.

MoaM Wrap up Party - Day 2 Reflections
Oops, this is another long post. What a tragedy, who could have seen this coming, etc.
Please beware of spoilers below the cut. In this essay post I've specifically pulled quotes from Chapters 18, 34, 36, and 41.
Day 2 - Favorite Quote
Please enjoy another gorgeous graphic by @willowalla
Tumblr media
Ugh, this one is super difficult. I'd have to say that any Kingsley quote is my favorite quote. In particular, these three have really stuck with me:
Chapter 18 - Visit to Kingsley's
"That's why you're struggling. You think everything must be planned before you even begin, but, in actuality, all you need to do is start. Throw something together, see if it works. You might not create what you intended, perhaps you may create something greater, but if you fail, you try again and use the knowledge of your experience."
I love this quote because it really highlights where Hermione is at the start of the story. A little bit rigid. A lotta bit systematic. Everything is by the book. But she works on this throughout the story. Until finally, in Chapter 41, she loves Draco to the point of invention (no, @inadaze22, I'll never fucking get over the incorporation of this). She creates for him. With his son. "Magic can heal a lot of things, but sometimes the earth helps."
Chapter 34 - Post-Standing Still Visit to Kingsley's
I love this quote for the exact reason I hate it - it forces introspection. Rude of Kingsley to be so wise. This passage kangaroo-kicked me in the chest.
"Think with your head. React with your heart. Listen to your gut."
Running her finger along the railing, she sighed. "My gut doesn't know."
"It does, but you don't speak its language." Kingsley's dark eyes turned more probing, albeit still gentle. Hard to understand how he managed it, or how he made her feel calm and safe when they were approaching the most fragile place in her heart. "Or perhaps you don't want to because then you'll have to decide, and when you decide, you'll have to commit to that decision. Have you considered that maybe that's what terrifies you?"
Chapter 41 - Kingsley's Ministry speech / DHr Convo
Fuck, this whole goddamn ending scene. I'm treating it as one quote. Who's going to stop me? I'm the sheriff around here.
I WILL NEVER STOP SCREAMING ABOUT THIS. THIS IS SO FUCKING GODS-DAMNED PERFECT, IT MAKES ME SICK. On its own, this speech is bitchin. It is so powerful. Drawing from my discord spiral, but I feel so many things. I can't explain how powerful it is to end this chapter with an MLK quote, that MLK quote. To have that ending quote follow an ending passage where Kingsley is wisdom and strength and power in leadership. I can't adequately express how powerful it is to layer Kingsley's speech over Draco's growth and actions. The beauty that is Kingsley saying "I am preparing us not for the predictability of the past, but for the realities of today and the unknown that is tomorrow" right after Draco tells Hermione he resigned from the DMLE (the predictability of HIS past) and accepted a seat on the Wizzy-G (the unknown of HIS tomorrow), and right before Draco says HE FEELS FREE. Screaming, crying, shaking, throwing up. AND FUCKING THEN, for Kingsley to say "I am not a perfect man...It is up to all of us to be the change we seek" is just the fucking cherry on top of everything. Tying together Draco's arc (father, son, man). Highlighting the overarching theme of growth in the story. This played out like a movie in my head, as they placed their hands on Scorp's shoulders, looked at each other, and embraced their future. [PTERODACTYL SHRIEKING AS I LAUNCH MYSELF INTO THE SUN]
"I was reminded by a friend that the measure of a man is what he does with power."
"While it can be used, misused, and abused, power can also transform the course of history. But this depends on both the character of the one wielding it and the choices they make. And while we are gathered here with the belief that I am the person who shall decide such things, I'm here to say that I am not. Under my leadership, that power rests with you… all of you."
"My job as Minister is to lead and empower, to facilitate and guide, to pursue and encourage progress."
"I am preparing us not for the predictability of the past, but for the realities of today and the unknown that is tomorrow."
"I am not a perfect man, but I am determined to lead this imperfect institution into a better future, and this future will not be a continuation of our past. The Ministry is—just as we all are—capable of change. It is up to all of us to be the change we seek."
Outside every word Kingsley has ever uttered, there are also a couple pieces of prose that are just exceptionally good, and I wanted to highlight those as well
Chapter 34
Masking the walls and designing the void, the quiet of her mind created everything out of nothing.
She dreamed of nothing and everything. Emptiness and potential.
Every quote that weaves the theme of something to nothing to everything owns my whole soul. But these two quotes from Chapter 34, when she's taking the space he gave her? Absolutely killer.
Chapter 36 - After Draco Spends the Night
ETERNALLY SCREAMING BECAUSE HE REMINDS HER OF THE OLIVE TREE FROM THE MANOR GREENHOUSE THAT HE GAVE HER TO APOLOGIZE. A TREE WHOSE LIKENESS IS TATTOOED UPON HIS OWN BODY AS A REPRESENTATION OF HER.
And as she watched him, as she felt his thumb riding the highs and lows of her knuckles, she realised that in some ways Draco was like the tree he gave her.
Olives grew where nothing else could. Resilient to fire and drought, the trees produced bitter fruit only edible through care. A process every bit worth the effort.
IF YOU'RE AN OLIVE, I'M AN OLIVE.
OLIVE YOU.
Chapter 41 - Bladma Wedding, Mehndi Ritual
"I'll close my eyes and you can draw my name in the Mehndi. I'll find it myself."
I distinctly remember having to take a break here. To just hold myself together and sob. Because I know what it is like to finally make it to that point in your life. And I was just so so so incredibly proud of Cho.
Chapter 41 - Zabini Manor Sex, The Remix
Any and all passages about celestial bodies, callbacks to the iconic earth and moon conversation, leave me prostrate on the floor. This quote absolutely wrecks me because it is at this point that Draco has found himself in the Mehndi. Where she has hidden her heart. First, Scorpius in her right palm. And then Draco, A CRESCENT MOON, on the back of her left hand. The hand that bears her ring. Outward facing, for all the world to see. And I love this because it calls back to the opening line of Chapter 36 - Like celestial bodies, Hermione and Draco were inextricably linked.
Still locked in an orbital dance with the Earth beneath it, their definition of gravity had been given a new meaning in this design. No longer held at arm's length, like this, they were together.
Eternally.

The Umbrellas of Cherbourg - Clashing of Fairytale and Melodrama in the Final Scene
The final scene of Jacques Demy's The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964) serves as a melancholic culmination of the film's exploration of fairytale motifs and melodramatic elements, carefully crafted through its mise-en-scène. This scene, taking place at Guy's gas station, is the final collision of fairy tale aspirations and melodramatic realism, embodied through its visual and auditory elements. Anne E. Duggan's analysis provides a vital lens through which we understand the intricate layering of themes and aesthetics in this climactic moment.
The mise-en-scène in this final sequence is rich with symbolic elements that tease back and forth between qualities of fairytale and melodrama. The spectacular snowfall, complemented by the bedazzled Christmas tree, injects a sense of wonder and magic that is quintessentially fairy tale. This visual choice evokes a dreamlike ambiance, reminiscent of a world where happy endings are presumed. Yet, the snow also introduces a sense of coldness and isolation, subtly hinting at the underlying melancholy that pervades the scene. It is powerful to consider that a single formal visual element (snow) can contribute to both sides of the narrative tone and motifs.
Tumblr media
The beautiful lighting casts a soft, ethereal glow on Guy and Genevieve, further amplifying the scene's fairy tale quality. However, this enchantment is counterbalanced by the mise-en-scène's spatial arrangements and the characters' positions, which articulate the unbridgeable gap between Guy and Genevieve's worlds. The single-frame final wide shot underscores this division, visually encapsulating the differences in their lives since their separation. We see Genevieve drive off towards Paris with her daughter while Guy's wife and child join him to play in the snow outside the gas station. Here, Demy uses formal elements to communicate the harsh realities that disrupt fairy tale narratives - realities of change, growth, and the inevitable march of time that can lead to the dissolution of once-vivid dreams and formerly-ignited passions.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Swooning music envelops the scene, its haunting melodies weaving together threads of longing, reminiscence, and acceptance. The musical choice elevates the scene's emotional impact, guiding the audience through a complex spectrum of feeling. It's worth noting that the music had a nostalgic quality to it, serving as a bridge between the past and present, reminding viewers of the love that once flourished between Guy and Genevieve while simultaneously underscoring the permanence of their separation.
youtube
Drawing on Duggan's insights, this scene exemplifies the film's thematic and aesthetic layering, where the fairy tale's enchantment clashes with the starkness of melodramatic realism. The fairy tale elements - represented by visual motifs of magic and romance - are undercut by the narrative's evolution, revealing a world where happy endings are contingent and ephemeral This convergence of genre speaks to Demy's nuanced critique of societal norms, the complexity of human emotions, and the impermanence of happiness.
In sum, the final scene at Guy's gas station beautifully encapsulates the film's interlay between fairy tale dreams and melodramatic truths. Through its meticulously chosen formal elements, Demy crafts a visually stunning and emotionally resonant moment that embodies the film's exploration of love, loss, and the bittersweet nature of human existence. This scene, with its convergence of fairy tale and melodrama, invites viewers to reflects on the beauty and tragedy of life, encapsulating the film's enduring appeal and its profound commentary on the human condition.
FUN FACT: Damien Chazelle, writer and director of La La Land, absolutely adored this movie and claimed to have seen it around 200 times. When comparing these two films side by side, it is easy to see both the visual and narrative influence. The poppy vibrant colors, the swooning romantic music, themes of conflict between romance and personal success, both melodramatic and fairy tale themes, etc.
The two films, of course, have very similar endings. I find it interesting to put them side by side and compare. I've pasted the ending scene below.

Your initial session with Shekinah Ma and Sanandaji was a turning point, where you discovered an awakened conscience from a fractured state and aligned with similar spirits to dive deeper into your spiritual trajectory. Deciphering the complex dance of synchronicity can be overwhelming.
TwinRay's divine mentors guide you on enriching meditative journeys filled with deep breaths, thoughtful pauses, and the practice of observing the world around you. This newfound consciousness tunes you to the rhythm of the supreme universal consciousness, accessible only to those awakened enough to perceive it. Your intuition, often likened to your inner compass, navigates your cognitive landscape. Akasha Sananda
This intuitive process aligns with reasoning that isn't constrained by logic or analytical thinking. Instead, it's a form of wisdom emanating from within—a unique and personal intuitive guide. This guide enables you to discern and understand fine points that conventional understanding overlooks. As you further embark on your inward journey, you start distinguishing the quiet whispers of intuition from the world's noise. Uncovering these layers illuminates patterns and connections, creating a tapestry of stories, meticulously woven by the universe's threads. These stories lead to the enlightened's hidden themes. Each theme signifies wisdom, a life lesson, or spiritual insight perceived only by the enlightened.
These themes guide you on the spiritual growth and self-discovery journey, leading you to a deeper understanding of existence. They shed light on those seeking enlightenment, acting as lighthouses in the cosmic journey's vast expanse. In the realm of uncertainty, your spiritual guides, Shekinah Ma and Sanandaji, access your consciousness levels, bestowing immutable laws upon you. This empowers you as a soul-bodied individual to relinquish the need for rigid explanations and revel in life's mysteries. Embracing uncertainty stimulates your intellect, allowing magic to reveal itself.
Over several months, you give up your preconceived beliefs, surrendering to a higher purpose and trusting that these threads are guiding you towards understanding your path. Synchronicity often thrives in collective consciousness, prompting you to seek confirmation that you're not alone in your mysterious encounters. If you're at a crossroads pondering a significant life change, harness the sages' wisdom and their deep ancestral advice. This will lead to true achievement.
As you etch out sacred spaces within yourself, you will begin to experience freedom, guidance, and infinite possibilities' potential. Real evolution unfolds, something as simple as the majestic sight of an eagle soaring, its feathers spread wide, will resonate deeply with you. The insights and experiences providing clarity and direction to your path are invaluable: Synchronicity threads its way through seemingly unrelated events, guiding you towards a deeper understanding of your spiritual aspirations.
Synchronicity serves a powerful reminder that life's events are not just coincidental or haphazard. Instead, they are exquisitely choreographed movements in our cosmic dance with the universe. It's the underlying rhythm guiding us through life's journey, a rhythm that may not always be apparent but is always there. The magic of synchronicity lies in our daily existence's seemingly mundane moments.
Chance encounters, unexpected opportunities, sudden realizations—all are manifestations of cosmic forces' harmonious interplay shaping our lives. Synchronicity encourages us to explore these moments, to look beyond their surface and recognize the deeper connections and meanings they hold. It nudges us to trust in invisible forces guiding us, believe in the intuition leading us, and have faith in the cosmic plan unfolding before us. Shekinha Ma
In the end, synchronicity is a gentle reminder that we are not alone in our journey. The TwinRay, Shekinah Ma and Sanandaji, serve as living proof of this guiding force, leading by example and sharing their wisdom with all those seeking spiritual growth and alignment. Their personal stories and experiences inspire us to open our hearts and minds to the magic of synchronicity, embracing it as a powerful tool for spiritual evolution and enlightenment. As we continue on our journey, let us remember to keep an open mind and heart, always attuned to the subtle signs and messages guiding us towards our true purpose and ultimate fulfillment.
So, why is synchronicity important? It plays a crucial role in our spiritual development and awakening, allowing us to tap into the universal consciousness and connect with our higher selves. It reminds us that we are part of something bigger than ourselves, and our individual journeys are intertwined with the greater cosmic plan. Synchronicity also serves as a reminder to trust in the divine timing of events and have faith that everything happens for a reason.

"TRUST (want vs. need vs. deserve vs. is vs...)"
---
“God’s will, not mine be done.”
Oh, if it were only that simple…
So to briefly contextualize all of this via the spiritual element of my program, the crux of the sentiment is that we are powerless. For me, it meant developing that “higher power” connection and then putting trust into the way things unfold, all the while being cognizant of the fact that this degree of trust/faith/however you want to characterize it requires action. It’s a simple concept that cascades into so many nuanced layers of understanding and implementation.
The point of this morning’s inevitable meandering is simply this: I don’t presume to know “God’s will.” I’m not that far up my own spiritual ass to know anything in that realm with certainty.
What I do know is that I characterize everything as an opportunity for growth. Whether it’s endurance through pain and suffering, experiencing joy in gratitude, or anything and everything in between, there’s always a “reason” that can be interpreted.
Which comes down to trying to determine this whole “will” thing. What I’m confident in is that the law of attraction applies. The light and love we give will be returned. That’s the distillation. “Don’t be bad vibes” is the most rudimentary description of it I can give. But not just “don’t suck,” it’s also “be of service.” In my program, that’s pretty straightforward. In the world at large, it can take so many forms. But again, for the purposes of gross oversimplification it’s a manifestation of the golden rule.
There are things that I want with all my heart. And as much as I believe or feel in regard to some of them, there is also evidence suggesting I need to accept that, in terms of what I “need” or what is “best,” those things simply aren’t aligned. And maybe they are but in a way I’m not yet understanding of. Maybe it’s just bad timing. As is the common theme with all of this, I just don’t know.
What I do know is that if I continue walking this path with the intention of minimizing and, hopefully one day eliminating damage or harm, and instead cultivating a life in service to others, I will be receptive of a lot of that goodness I seek emotionally.
And, as Tom Petty once sang, “the waiting is the hardest part.” It takes a lot of trust in the whole “what is/what will be is meant to be” line of reasoning to accept it and be in any way comfortable with it. Because I’d be lying to say that I am always comfortable. Especially right now. I’m at bat getting thrown curveballs. I’m just waiting for that perfect pitch... I’d go as far to say that I’m extremely uncomfortable with some of the things I’ve had to accept because they just don’t make sense to me. But I’m learning how to trust fully, every single day.
When you’re “in it,” it’s difficult to see that there is even a possibility for a lesson learned or new opportunity to arise. It’s a major emotional disconnect to know exactly what I want, have no idea what I need, and struggle to accept what is.
The extension(s) of these things then factors into what I “deserve” and then an endless list of classifications about how people, places, things, and experiences will impact my life at large. Not knowing anything for certain is a motherfucker. But the fact remains that it’s hard to characterize any of it until experiencing it and, oftentimes, not until after the fact.
Which is why it’s critical to remain open to possibility. My trust stems from the inherent hope of possibility. I wish I could just receive and experience things all wrapped up with a neat little bow. But as is often the case with me, so much of the most important experiences in my life have come rife with a degree of emotional chaos.
I wish I had the foresight and preemptive knowledge of how things would turn out and what their purpose or function in my life is, but wishing does not make it so. Learned that the hard way.
So today, unsettled, uncertain, but full of trust, I carry on. One of the most critical aspects in all of this is the ability to navigate and become “comfortable” with being uncomfortable. It’s exhausting. I have great days, terrible days, happy days, sad-boi days, boring days, confusing days, lazy days, borderline manic days, and anything and everything in between. It has been nearly half a year of intense and wild emotional fluctuations. And through all of it, I’ve gained confidence in my ability to navigate. The most applicable metaphor is probably a ship at sea. Storms, dangerous waters, calm waters, blackness of the night, and a vast expanse of nothing clear ahead. Just a hope for land and trust that my spiritual compass will lead me to the lighthouse in the distance.
So if you feel unsettled or uncomfortable or insane, just never forget that it’s part of the process. And when we struggle to believe it ourselves, look to those who have come before. There is ample living proof. I have stopped solely going on instinct and now accept guidance from those who have been in my position. Some of them are still in my position and are just better equipped to handle it all than they once were.
I really have no clue what tomorrow has in store. I’m trying to be open and receptive. I’m trying not to act on compulsions of what I want and instead defer to the wisdom of others and trust that there is a lighthouse in the distance. Even in my times of struggle and confusion and frustration, I have ample evidence of this all working. It’s all trending in the right direction. It’ll never be some baseline of perfect stability, but my capacity to navigate it all will only grow and grow and grow.
I found a quote yesterday by one of my all-time favorite authors, Arthur C. Clarke: “In my life I have found two things of priceless worth - learning and loving. Nothing else - not fame, not power, not achievement for its own sake - can possibly have the same lasting value. For when your life is over, if you can say 'I have learned' and 'I have loved,' you will also be able to say 'I have been happy.”
And that sentiment and fundamental truth of our entire experience is what I continue to trust in, to believe in, to cultivate, and to live in accordance with. I’m a forever student in pursuit of giving and receiving love. It’s all possible. Whatever unexpected form(s) it might take is not up to me. But I know when I feel it and experience it. And I wouldn’t trade the authenticity inherent in love and learning for anything.
Going back to my little sailor metaphor, my sails are at full mast, the wind is blowing steady, and I have a general sense of direction to follow. When I can’t see the lighthouse, I have to be the light in the night. When the storms rage and the sea swells, I have to hang on for dear life with determination and willingness. And I have to believe that in the vast expanse of sea before me, there is dry land on the horizon.
This shit can be so tough. It can be draining and frustrating and confusing. But in the end, it’s all worth it. Maybe I don’t “know” that for certain, but I hope for it, I’m aware it’s possible, and I truly and sincerely believe it.

Devastated by the loss, Julie finds solace in Sam's voicemail, preserving his memory by continuing to call and leave messages. I was so sad, I wanted to assume Sam somehow lived. But Thao had other plans for me.
Thao's writing is heartfelt and evocative, effortlessly drawing readers into Julie's world of grief and longing. The characters are relatable and well-developed, with Julie's journey serving as a catalyst for personal growth and understanding. The author expertly explores themes of loss, acceptance, and the power of letting go, leaving readers with a profound sense of empathy and reflection.
You've Reached Sam tackles heavy subject matter with grace and sensitivity. It delves into the complexities of grief and the different ways people cope with loss. Thao's narrative invites readers to explore the stages of grief alongside Julie, allowing them to experience the range of emotions and challenges that accompany the healing process.
What makes this book unique is its exploration of the connection between the living and the departed. The mysterious interaction that Julie develops with the person who answers Sam's phone introduces a touch of the supernatural, adding a layer of intrigue and exploration of the unexplained.
I believe it was Sam’s ghost. Nobody can change my mind.
In conclusion, You've Reached Sam is a book that will resonate deeply with readers. Thao's exquisite writing, coupled with the raw emotions and relatable characters, creates an immersive and unforgettable reading experience. Prepare to be moved by the themes of love, loss, and the profound impact of human connections that transcend the boundaries of life and death. Parachute Review: Brittany Snow Shows Immense Directorial Skill
Tumblr media
Brittany Snow makes her directorial debut with the drama film Parachute, a thought-provoking examination of the nuanced challenges surrounding recovery, self-acceptance, and the complexities of relationships affected by mental health issues. Snow, along with co-writer Becca Gleason, dives into a sensitive topic with a mixture of care and creativity, offering a fresh perspective on the subject matter. The film, brought to life by a talented cast including Courtney Eaton, Thomas Mann, Scott Mescudi, Francesca Reale, and Gina Rodriguez, brings authenticity and depth to a story that is both personal and universal. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xn6qaspTkOY Parachute revolves around Riley (Courtney Eaton), who, after being discharged from rehab for her struggles with food and body image issues, ventures into the delicate phase of rebuilding her life. This fragile moment takes an unexpected turn when she meets Ethan (Thomas Mann), with whom she develops a compelling, albeit complicated, relationship. The film explores Riley’s journey with empathy, capturing the tension between seeking unconditional love and the danger of substituting one addiction for another. The addition of Scott Mescudi as Justin, Francesca Reale as Casey, and Gina Rodriguez as Dr. Akerman enriches the narrative, providing diverse perspectives on Riley’s journey and the ripple effects of her struggles on those around her. The directorial approach Brittany Snow takes in Parachute showcases her ability to blend nuanced storytelling with a keen eye for the emotional undertones of the recovery process. The screenplay by Snow and Gleason deserves praise for its honesty and sensitivity, treating its complex themes with the seriousness they warrant while injecting moments of lightness that prevent the narrative from becoming overwhelmingly heavy. Through a combination of sharp writing and compelling performances, Parachute effectively communicates the inner turmoil and hope that define Riley’s world. Courtney Eaton delivers a breakout performance as Riley. She captures the vulnerability and resilience of her character with a depth that is both poignant and relatable. Her portrayal brings a multidimensional understanding to the experiences of those dealing with similar issues. This makes Parachute not just a story about addiction and recovery, but a broader commentary on the human condition. Thomas Mann’s Ethan complements Riley’s character. He prompts reflection on support and co-dependency in relationships impacted by mental health challenges. While Parachute has its strengths, there are aspects of the film that prevent it from achieving its full potential. The pacing feels uneven at times, which can disrupt the immersive experience Snow and her team create. Moreover, the film occasionally struggles to balance its ambitious thematic explorations. This leads to moments where the messaging feels slightly heavy-handed or overly simplified. The supporting cast, despite having less screen time, delivers strong performances that complement the leads. Scott Mescudi’s portrayal of Justin offers a refreshing and necessary perspective on the theme of support networks. Francesca Reale and Gina Rodriguez provide impactful performances that add layers to the film’s exploration of recovery and personal growth. However, their characters sometimes feel underutilized, hinting at missed opportunities to delve deeper into the surrounding influences on Riley’s journey. Parachute benefits from Snow’s thoughtful directorial style, employing a visual language that reflects the internal states of its characters. The cinematography adeptly captures the emotional landscape of the narrative, using color, framing, and movement to enhance the storytelling. The soundtrack, too, plays a critical role in setting the tone of the film. Although at times it leans towards predictability. It echoes familiar beats of the drama genre rather than forging a distinct auditory identity. Overall: In its ambition to tackle a difficult and complex subject, Parachute is a commendable effort. Brittany Snow's directorial debut showcases her talent for handling sensitive material with thoughtfulness. Though not flawless, the film's heartfelt execution, strong performances, and exploration of themes make it worthwhile. Parachute invites audiences to ponder the intricate dynamics of recovery and the essence of supportive relationships. As well as the courage it takes to face one’s vulnerabilities head-on. Parachute achieves narrative ambition, character depth, and emotional impact. But, it does have pacing, character development, and thematic execution that could be refined. Brittany Snow’s foray into the world of directing with Parachute suggests a promising career behind the camera. She showcases a sincere commitment to telling stories that resonate on a deeply human level. As Snow continues to develop her voice as a filmmaker, there is no doubt that she will refine her craft. She will contribute significantly to conversations around important issues through the medium of film. Read the full article

Review: Bertie Newman’s newest indie-folk single ‘Home’ carries a bittersweet message amidst a whimsically tender soundscape
Tumblr media
Twenty two year old indie-folk singer-songwriter Bertie Newman has always found a home within his musical creations, penning his individual experiences and emotions with a depth he could never truly share any other way, and when getting his ADHD diagnosis it finally made so much more sense why he felt so different from the crowds. After getting that diagnosis only last year, Bertie found himself suddenly making more sense of why he had differing qualities to others, wrapping up much of his new EP ‘Thought So Loud’ around this new stage of his life and understanding himself. Touching on themes of neurodivergence, anxiety, relationships, and personal growth, the EP looks to be one that’ll relate to many, and his newest single ‘Home’ concludes it.
Haunting right from its tender acoustic beginnings, ‘Home’ glides into your ears with a warm, finger-picked acoustic guitar riff and echoey vocal ‘oohs’, a soft start for a song wrapped up inside its heartfelt familiarity. Building up as you journey through the verse with added distant bright piano chimes, acoustic guitar strums and layered vocals, ‘Home’ continues to feel nothing but sincere and utterly stirring even at its most dominant points, enveloping you within its whimsically evolving sound. The chorus peaks at an enchantingly atmospheric high with booming beats that reverberate around a vast echo chamber of sound; several layers of wispy vocals and continued intimate acoustic guitar, all intertwining for a moment you can’t help but feel yourself ache within. As the bridge pulls things back to just piano keys before becoming even more minimal guitar strums and of course Bertie’s vocals, every second of ‘Home’ can’t just feel so personal and emotionally-infused, bearing such a great feeling of longing in its’ gentle soundscape. The way Bertie sings atop it all ties it all together, affectionately soaring through a downbeat range that glistens with such raw emotional fluctuation, capturing not just your attention but your heart too.
As Bertie found himself penning the confessional narrative of ‘Home’, he took inspiration from his own journey of self-acceptance when first beginning his current relationship, finding that despite having the perfect partner in front of him he couldn’t help but look within at his faults and sabotage. Expressing that ‘I just wanna go home, now I know what it’s like to live without you’, Bertie finds himself caught up in the whirlwind of their love, feeling somewhat codependent and afraid of falling back into the loneliness his life once was before meeting them. As he continues to dream, lines like ‘hotel paradise, five star dreams… just don’t feel quite as nice as a rainy day, stuck in traffic by your side’ portray the utter head over heels affair he’s fallen into, sweetly boasting how their presence alone is enough to make any moment worth being in. Fearfully revealing ‘our hearts move further everyday, I’m just scared you’ll slip away’ , Bertie continues to show a deep-rooted level of insecurity within his newfound partnership, constantly afraid of losing them and overthinking the little details despite the perfection of their love not once faltering. ‘Home’ truly is a bittersweet mix of the purest kind of love and the work on yourself that needs to be done to not just accept it but do so healthily and without obsession, a challenge for most who have struggled with their mental health or self esteem. But it’s beautiful nonetheless, and a thought-provoking level of songwriting that’ll surely leave you looking within.
Sharing more detail, Bertie adds that “‘Home’ is really a throwback to how I felt really anxious about my current relationship when it first started to manifest. I felt as if a mirror had been placed directly in front of me and everything that was good and bad about myself was being revealed… Overall, I wrote this song wanting to highlight the absolutely stunning parts of meeting someone so special but also the complications within yourself that come with it.”
Check out ‘Home’ for yourself here to unpack the heavy lyrical journey Bertie has penned, whilst his fluctuating journey of sound takes you along for a bittersweet ride.
