Jack Harlow - Officially meeting Jack
Tumblr media
Interviewer: So can you two tell us where you first met and what were your first impressions on each other.
you started cracking up thinking about that day.
10/27/21.
After 2019 you weren’t so much in the spotlight, only because you chose too. You liked to be as private as possible and your work already got the recognition it deserved. Plus you’ve already done a few interviews here and there.
You were struggling with a lot at the time and the only option you had was to take a break from your career. You stayed lowkey, stopped posting, and anytime you were in a picture or anything it was RARE.
But anyway, 2021 you started to plan your comeback and so your friend Cole posted you on your Birthday

colebennett happy 22nd birthday twin
And Cole has worked with many people, including Jack Harlow. Who you didn’t even know really but Cole had the amazing idea to take him to the Birthday Party your lovely Best Friend, Kali Uchis was throwing you.
Your Birthday is in late October so you always have a Costume Party. This year it was a Jazz Club/Old Hollywood themed.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Many people that you’ve worked with or have a bond with came. Here are some of the people who attended.
Tumblr media
As you’re talking with friends, Cole approaches you with some people you’ve never met and didn’t really recognize.
“Yo Arlette” he yells.
“Cole Hey!!” you say noticing there’s some people behind him.
“Look I just wanted to introduce you to my boys here, you might know some of em, this is Jack, Jack Harlow.”
the world stopped spinning when you looked into his eyes, and you damn near lost your breath when he reached for handshake.
“Happy Birthday.” he says
“nice to meet you☺️☺️” omfg. LIKE WHO IS THIS???!??? you were screaming on the inside, last person you were geeking over was Jordan. (playboicarti)
“And then this is Urban and Druski” Cole continues to introduce you.
you greet them all with a smile and a nice to meet you, because like we mentioned earlier we aren’t so aware of the people poppin at the moment😬 but some knew you
“Hey I really love your work dude, New Choppa was insane” - Urban says
“Thank you so muchhh!” you say with a smile.
Fast forward the night, you took some pictures with your friends and everyone, including Jack because Cole insisted.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cole posted it on his story and everyone was going crazy because this was your first appearance since 2019. (yk how we freak out when we see frank ocean, this is how everyone was reacting to you)
You: So yeah to break it all down, I wanted Jacks fine ass since the day I met him.
Jack’s Pov
At the time I was on the rise of my Career. The song I was featured on with Lil Nas X was the #1 song in the world. Got Nominated for hella stuff, got hella awards. I was really accomplishing my dreams.
My friend Cole Bennett, creator of Lyrical Lemonde, fucking legend. I’ve worked with him for the music video of What’s Poppin my first hit ever.
He had this friend, and I had known of Arlette because she was a big help in the artistic side of this industry and uh, Urban has mentioned her name to me before when he’d show me some album covers, or a music video but, i never knew the face behind all that was arlette’s beautiful self.
So it’s October, all these halloween parties are happening and Cole had hit me up and said, “Yo I have this friend, Arlette Viotto she works in the same category as me. I don’t know if you’ve heard of her but, she’s having a birthday party today at 9 PM they’re always really sick, i’d love for you to meet her man.
And me like I said I never even seen what she looked like, but I looked her up on google and I was sent to a whole different dimension looking at how beautiful she was. I was also appalled reading everything she was behind like damn I never knew. But I hit Cole back I said I am going to that party, we invited more of our friends and walking into this lil jazz club, they were playing that techno shit, it got turnt.
And I’m walking around I see hella people here, some people are coming to greet me ya know telling me congrats on being number one all that. Cole brings me to go meet this Arlette Viotto. And man was she even prettier in person.
Meanwhile Urban was over here fangirling, i remember. That shit was hilarious, but yeah I used my skills of eye contact and smooth talking. It was love at first sight.
okay first of all sorry for taking forever on this. I have gotten so unmotivated on like everything i been wanting to write about but here is what i have of this Jack Harlow series im attempting to do. I hope you love it and there’s more coming, trust and believe!!

A LunaTic and her Gunn (Part 109 2Xs2) "Welcome To The Hotel Diablo"
@crystalbaby12 @backoftheroomandnotbelonging @5sosfam1dlover @rosefilledhearts-blog
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
El Diablo begins play as the lights go up. The masses lose their minds at the sight of the full stage. Luna's next to Colson with Casie. Pete, Ashleigh, Dom and Ashley are close by. Sam's near Baze as Dub, Noah, Mod, Caroline, Naomi, Trippie and Skies spread out around them.
Only Colson has a mic but you can barely hear him as everyone rapid fires the lyrics with him. Luna dances with Pete, Ashleigh and Casie while teasing Colson as he moves around his friends on stage. All of them loudly shouting how they KEEP THEIR CIRCLE TIGHT.
It's a fun and unique sight. Something that will never be recreated again. A true gift from Colson to his original fan base.
"THANK YOU!! WE FUCKING LOVE YOU FAM!! SEE YOU AT ESTFEST!!" Colson screams as the lights go down one final time.
Kissing Casie's cheek, he glances over at Ashleigh. Her nod tells him she's Got It. With that, he slings a squealing Luna over his shoulder and trots OffStage. He's got his own Backstage Ritual to attend to.
------------------------------------------------
"That was so fucking intense, Bunny!" Luna exclaims once Colson sets her down.
"I know." His mouth buzzes into her's as they strip off each other's clothes.
Colson lifts Luna up onto the small table against the wall. Having lit a joint as he carried her down the hall, she lifts it to his lips.
"I love you." He lightly chuckles as he exhales.
Guiding his thick cock into her warm pussy, Luna groans out in pleasure. Wrapping her legs around him to pull him in closer as he begins to thrust into her. Luna sucks on Colson's neck before lifting the joint to his lips. Grabbing her by the back of her neck, he kisses her hard. Exhaling his hit and filling her lungs.
The extra carbon dioxide makes Luna heady. She closes her eyes and runs her hands through Colson's hair. Enjoying his cock as he plays with her pierced nipples and nibbles on her ear. There's a sweet electricity to Colson and Luna's sex. It's passionate and rough but not aggressive.
Clenching herself around his dick, Luna lowly moans out Colson's name. Letting him wash over her as she gets them high. Colson grips her ass and lower back, making his way deeper into her. With her head back and neck exposed, Colson draws his tongue over her tattooed skin before opening wide and biting her JUST enough to make them both cum.
"Holy FUUUUUCK, Bunny!!" Luna cries out as her body shakes with his in pleasure.
"Can't say I don't know your spots." Colson sighs with a grin as he kisses her.
"I love you too." Floats from between Luna's lips in a content sigh as she closes her eyes and leans her forehead against his.
-----------------------------------------------
Dressed in a pair of tight, black shorts, sheer tights, a printed black tank and knee high black boots, Luna's hair is still loose. Colson had tossed on a dark T and jeans while Luna had cut out their lines. Burning, kissing and snorting before making their way BackStage.
Everyone's in high spirits, celebrating the epic show and album's success. Casie reminds her dad of the necklaces and helps Colson pass off the coveted Double X chains to Naomi, Trippie, Ashleigh, Skies and Dub. They all go on to toast Colson, Hotel Diablo's release and each other while hugging and joking together.
It's not long before they have to head out to Velvet Dog for the release party. Casie gets huge GoodByes and Love before Bullet leads her and Ashleigh out to a private SUV. Her and Bullet will meet back up with them after dropping off Casie to Emma.
------------------------------------------------
The rest of them pile into multiple other SUVs. They're headed DownTown to a smaller, more intimate nightclub. Each of them chatting, drinking and getting stoned along the way in the five seperate vehicles.
Leaving Agora wasn't a problem. Pulling up to Velvet Dog, they can see it's gonna be much more of a hassle getting in there. Fans and The Paparazzi are surrounding it from all angles. The venue's own security is doing it's best at controlling the chaos. Benny's driving Colson, Luna, Rook, Baze and Sam.
"What do you wanna do, Kells?" Benny asks looking over his shoulder.
"Fuck it, make a path and let's get the fuck in there." He shrugs at Benny. Turning to Luna, he looks at her seriously. "Do NOT let go of my hand." He asserts before kissing her.
Luna nods a silent Yes as Benny taps on the window. Grabbing Luna's hand, he confirms everyone's ready before opening the door. Making Luna laugh when he shouts WE OUT.
Outside in the dark it's bright. It's loud. People are aggressive and Colson is on a mission. Clutching Luna's hand, he pulls her through the crowd behind Benny. Colson's super focused. Knowing how much she hates crowds, he's trying to successfully get them inside before anyone can stop them, seperate them or say anything to piss either of them off.
He does. Like a champion. Winning him a thousand happy kisses from a grateful Luna.
-----------------------------------------------
Inside is just as crazy. Record executives are there. Other artists from Interscope. More family and friends from Cleveland along with fellow supportive friends who flew in from LA and Philly.
Normally ones to seperate and work their own aspects of a room, Colson keeps Luna close to him tonight. She doesn't mind, happily staying by his side as he introduces her to those she doesn't know and they greet mutual acquaintances and friends they have together. Watching them in action, they truly are a Power Couple. Both of them smart, charming, gorgeous and engaging. Easily laughing and enjoying each other as they glide through to the nightclub celebrating Colson and The Boys.
They run into Johnny, Colson's partner in his 27 Club coffee venture. Unlike Dub, Johnny isn't leery of Luna. Colson listening with amusement as the two easily connect over music, the pain of starting up a business and his shocking love of her paintings.
"Yeah, I caught your exhibit back in '15.... Your shit is incredible. I wanted to buy a piece but none of it was for sale surprisingly..." Johnny trails off with furrowed eyebrows.
"That's myyy girl for ya." Colson laughs as he tosses his arm carefully around Luna's shoulders. "Dawg, she's a snob. She don't sell shit... if I didn't hear them myself, I wouldn't even believe she has seven fucking records!" He laughs looking down at Luna's rolling eyes as he kisses her forehead.
"Maaan..." Luna begins to whine with a smile.
"Why don't you sell your stuff?" Johnny asks.
"I hate you." Luna lightly chuckles as she nuzzles her head against Colson's chest before answering Johnny. "Most of my physical work is made for someone or something intentional. I'm not comfortable with someone else owning something that holds my intimacy with another." She tries to explain to his accepting nod.
"So then why release your music?" Colson challenges her.
"Because that's universal.... And it's MY guts I'm bearing not some..."
"You got like 20 mins, Kells." Ashleigh interupts them.
"Oh shit, alright. You coming with me, Kitten?" He asks looking down at her.
"Of course." She reassures with a smile. "We'll catch up later. It was a pleasure to meet you." Luna beams as she shakes Johnny's hand.
Before he can agree, she's gone. Hand in hand with Colson. Blonde hair trailing behind her like a memory.
------------------------------------------------
Their performances during the record release party were equally on point. Some more fun while others are more thought provoking and gut wrenching.
Catching certain faces before he had hit the stage, Colson decided to have Luna pop OnStage during Hollywood Whore. Cutting in only to recite the changed lyrics the way he wanted her to. As always, on and off stage, Luna was nothing short of a wreckage to be dealt with. Her powerful voice reaming out the room with Colson's truth as she moved her tiny, tattooed body seductively around her Lover before propping herself against his slender one.
🎶It's because of y'all//He couldn't understand//The worth of his career//'Cause of y'all//He hated himself//For so many years//'Cause of you//He never thought//That he could trust//But//You better watch your back//Cuz he's about to wife//ME up🎶
Her slip in had been flawless. Sending their friends into an uproar as Colson grabbed Luna's ass. Neither missing a beat while she trotted OffStage.
The rest of the gig went off without a hitch. Smoke and lights exploded around them constantly while Naomi and Phem's voices were on perfect pitch. Trippie and Lil Skies nailed their own features with Colson and Dom killing their performance of I Think I'm Okay.
With no encore planned, Luna and Colson went HARD on Bad Things. Both of their voices strong as The Boys roared behind them and they passionately played and pushed off each other. Their performance intense and extremely sexual as Luna ran the stage with her presence and Colson with his guitar. To this day, it's both of their favorite times OnStage.
------------------------------------------------
Trying to escape to his dressing room with a laughing Luna over his shoulder, Colson is stopped. By Diddy and Jimmy Iovine of all fucking people. Setting her down, the couple addresses the two men.
"Yo!! Be proud, Son. That shit was fire!!" Diddy proudly proclaims as he pulls Colson in for a full on hug.
Luna and Jimmy stand eyeballing each other. He doesn't know what to say to her and she's not fucking up Colson's Big Night.
"You too, Kid!" Sean says to Luna as he pulls her in for a hug once he's released Colson.
"That was an extraordinary show." Jimmy says, offering his hand to Colson.
"Thank you. I appreciate that. I leave everything I have OnStage every time I perform." Colson answers as he shakes his hand.
"It shows." Jimmy nods his head, never seeing Colson perform before he's beyond impressed by the underrated artist.
"He's going overseas..." Sean says to Luna as Jimmy and Colson interact.
"I know." Luna answers with a nod.
"With Hotel Diablo debuting so high, if the momentum keeps up I'm adding more US dates after." He says as he studies her reaction.
"Then you better get us a bigger bus... And. I don't want fucking Don." Luna eyes Diddy with a seriousness to her tone.
"What's your problem with him?" He asks with a laugh.
"He's a fucking douche who has no respect for Colson.... You know how I feel about that, Sean." Luna giving two answers that they both know.
"Alright, no Don." Diddy laughs at her.
"And a bigger bus?" Luna pushes.
"We'll see." Colson's boss laughs at his girlfriend. "Just don't mention any extra dates. I don't wanna hype him up til I'm sure..."
"So, bigger bus?" Luna smirks.
"Yeah. Bigger bus, you bitch." Diddy laughs as he pulls her in for a hug. "He's lucky to have you. You're one of the very FEW I give into." He continues to laugh as he kisses her cheek.
"I know." Luna grins at him. "And I love and appreciate you for it." She asserts before squeezing him again tightly and making him laugh even more.
"You better marry this bitch before she changes her mind!" Diddy continues laughing as Luna releases him from their hug.
"Psh... As quick as I can, Boss." Colson laughs as Luna tucks herself under his arm.
"YEEEOOOOOO!!!" Comes a loud voice above them.
"Looks like you got more shit to attend to. We'll catch up soon. Congratulations, Slick. I'm proud of you." Diddy says, dapping it out and hugging Colson once more before disappearing with Jimmy.
"I SAID YEEEOOOOOO!!" Tyree shouts as he bursts through the BackStage crowd.
"My mans!!" Colson hollers in delight as they embrace each other while Lamar and Luna happily greet each other in the meantime. "You made it!!" Colson says excitedly.
"Yeah... But without Ash we'd be dust in the wind, Homie." Ree replies with an annoyed look.
"My bad, Yo. But you're HERE!!" Colson shouts as he pulls Luna, Lamar and Tyree in for a group hug.
"Look at these motherfuckers." Dub comes up with a laugh.
Lamar and Tyree turn to greet their longtime friend. Dapping and laughing, the boys catch up while Luna stands awkwardly amongst them. Finding her exit clause, Dub calls her out.
"She don't like me." He teases her.
"Nah, Motherfucker. Don't put that shit on me.... You're the one who came up in here all Strong Man, Strong Man." Luna cocks her lip as she narrows her eyes.
Standing amidst Lamar and Tyree, Colson can't help but laugh at Dub from behind her. They may know... But he has no idea what he's in for.
"I don't know what your fucking problem with me is or where the fuck you get your Word from but until you climb on that bus or in a house with us... You better check your resources MOTHERFUCKER cuz you don't know shit. Bestfriends or not, we can buck. Right here. Right fucking now." Luna snarls with squared shoulders and a deadly look in her eyes.
"Ho!! Calm down, Shorty!!" Dub laughs, putting his hands up. "Don't shoot. I don't wanna fight, I was just pressen' you. You know. I gotta make sure you live up to that hype if you gonna lock my boy down!" Dub continues to laugh.
"What's goin' on over here?" Slim asks as he throws his arms around Luna and Dub.
"You, Bitch." Luna asserts as she ducks out from under his weight. "Don't think I don't fucking know." She spouts as her drunken eyes bounce between Slim and Dub. "It's alright though... He'll learn just like you did." She asserts as she snakes her head at both of them before dropping a middle finger, a kiss on Colson's long neck and turning to find someone more fun to hang out with.
"For real?" Colson asks both of them.
"Hey, I'm just goin' off what Slim said." Dub defends himself.
"Dawg, I AIN'T SPOKE TO YOU IN LIKE A WEEK!!" Slim uncharacteristically shouts, refusing to be thrown under the bus.
"Annnnnnnnd?" Dub cocks back.
"SHIT CHANGES!!" Slim continues to holler at his high school friend.
"Yo... Yo... Yo... Chill." Colson interupts them. "If anyone should be pissed it should be me, you back alley bitches. You got questions, words or problems with me and Luna, you come to ME. Don't be a couple of old lady pussies talking shit behind my fucking back."
"It wasn't shit, Kells." Slim starts to explain.
"It was enough for Dub-O to form a negative opinion about her before meeting her though, wasn't it.?" Colson shoots back as he tries to hold his anger.
Slim looks down sheepishly at Colson's words. He hadn't trusted Luna. At all, for a while. Even after she'd thrown down for his bestfriend multiple times. It wasn't until she stepped up when Bleta threatened Ashleigh and Benny and refused to lie to Colson, did Slim finally accept her. Dub doesn't know these things though because he wasn't on tour with them.
"Hey... Hey... Hey..." Dub comes jogging up behind Luna. "I'm sorry..." He says as he grabs onto her shoulder.
It's the wrong choice. The music and noise are too loud. The small BackStage area is filled with too many people. Not hearing Dub and only feeling his firm hand upon her, the New Yorker in Luna kicks in as she turns and lands a solid blow straight into his nose. Busting it wide open as he stumbles back off of his feet and onto the floor.
"WHAT THE FUUUUUCK!!" Dub shouts as he grasps his face.
"Don't ever fucking touch me." Luna replies emotionlessly before grabbing her leather and disappearing.
------------------------------------------------
"Hey.... You okay?" Colson asks after finding Luna alone on the steps out back of the nightclub.
"I don't know... I think I'm losing my shit..." Luna sighs as she passes the lit joint she has to Colson.
"Why?" He asks as he takes a hit.
"I don't know... I just laid out one of your bestfriends, was rude to a fan on the street and fought with my Mom-Mom all in the last 3 days ." Luna let's out with an annoyed sigh.
"Why'd you fight with Patti?" Colson asks.
"Fuck me and my big stupid mouth." Luna mentally curses herself.
"It's nothing." She tries to brush Colson off.
"No, it's not." Colson isn't having her bullshit, he knows Luna doesn't fight with her grandmother.
"I need a PreNump." She sighs with frustration.
"Okay?" Colson asks with confusion.
"What do you mean okay?" Luna's drunk and irrational.
"I mean okay. I'm not marrying you for your shit so.... OKAY. I'll sign whatever as long as I still get YOU. That's all I want, Baby." His voice breaks as he climbs on to the step behind her and wraps himself around a confused Luna. "You."
"You don't care what the PreNump includes?" She asks with a slight attitude.
"No. I don't give a fuck." Grabbing her chin, he pulls her eyes to him. "I'm marrying you, Luna. Not THAT Brooklyn Bitch. Not Patti Smith and Robert Maplethorpe's granddaughter. Not the coolest chick in The World. Just you. My own personal Addy." He grins as he begins to attack her with sweet, sloppy kisses.
"Ahhhh!!! Stop!" Luna giggles as she tries to wiggle out of Colson's grasp. It doesn't work. Submitting, she holds his face in her hands as she stares into his beautiful blue eyes. "Thank you." She says first as she gently kisses his lips. "And I'm sorry for hitting Dub."
"He shouldn't have fucked with you." Colson replies with a shrug and a smirk. "Back inside, please?" He asks as he stands and offers Luna his hand.
"Yeah." She agrees as she rises to kiss him.
------------------------------------------------
Back inside, the nightclub is going off. The DJ playing Hotel Diablo again in full as everyone dances and grooves. The words maybe alarmingly dark but the bop is on point.
"Yo. My bad." Dub immediately approaches Colson and Luna. "I was just trying to fuck wit you and clearly I shouldn't." He apologizes with a light laugh.
"No. I shouldn't have just swung, I'm sorry." Luna apologizes as she begins to rub her forehead.
"Nah, Ma, you good. I pushed to see how hard you'd rock... I didn't expect this shit but now I know!" Dub laughs at himself.
"I still feel like an Asshole." Luna admits.
"You good. I'd rather have Kells with a chick holding a solid right than some VSCO boujie bitch. We ride hard... And as much as it kills me to say it... I think you might ride harder!" Dub laughs again as Colson joins him.
"Enh... I got my name for a reason. Still, I'm really sorry about all that." Luna says as she gestures towards his nose.
"Stories, B. Stories." Dub winks at her with a smile as he opens his arms.
With that, Luna and Dub become friends. Her appreciating the lengths he will go to for Colson. Him respecting her fierce loyalty and the strong right fist she has for herself and her man.
:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
The album release party is still in full swing. Colson dips off as Luna grabs her and Dub drinks before she looks at his nose. Apologizing for the thousandth time to his laughter before they make their own way into the party.
Sam and Baze are making out like teenagers in a corner. Luna finds Naomi, The Ash's and Dom as Floor 13 kicks in. Drinks in hand, they jive, jerk and rap along Colson and the unique beat. Colson's with Slim, Benny, Pete, Mar, Ree and Dub by the bar busting it up. Noah, Caroline, Mod and Phem find Luna, the Ash's and Dom, easily coaxing them to the dance floor as Roulette begins. Rook can be found macken' on girls with Trippie and Skies while Bullet watches all from his perch at the bar.
:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
"What cha guys doin'..." Luna asks as she approaches The Boys at the bar.
Bad choice. Colson and Pete immediately pounce on her like the night at 30 Rock. Linking their arms together, they catch her again like they're playing London Bridge. Shaking her all about as they happily sing their made up song.
🎶We gotta Moon Pie. We'll never let her get by🎶
"Whhhyyyy????" Luna moans as they justle her back and forth.
🎶Even when she asks why. She's our drunken Moon Pie🎶
They continue to laugh as they toss her around. It takes strategic planning to get out of a mess like this, only a skilled mind could handle the pressure. Being a smart cookie, Luna turns and throws her arms around Colson's neck and pulls him in for a perfectly distracting kiss. With her fingers climbing up his neck into his hair and her tongue dancing in his mouth, Colson has no choice but to let go of Pete's hands as they begin to roam around Luna. Pressing his large palm in between her shoulder blades as he kisses her deeply.
"Man... Fuck you guys." Pete complains as he leaves them be.
"🎶And a Moon Pie got away🎶 Luna sings to herself as she enjoys Colson's mouth much more than his and Pete's stupid ass game.
"Mmmm... You may taste good but you're not slick." Colson smirks once their mouths seperate.
"I don't know what you're talking about." Luna replies with a devilish smile.
"Okay, Moon Pie." Colson laughs before kissing her again. "Grab a drink?" He asks as he gazes at her.
"Yeup." Luna smiles brightly at Colson, standing on her tippy toes to kiss him before they make their way to the bar.
"KELLS!!!" Naomi comes barreling up to Colson, grabbing him around the waist into a huge hug. "I haven't seen you but I met Luna!!" She exclaims. "I LOVE her. Where is she??" Naomi adamantly asks.
"Right here." Colson laughs, pointing behind him to Luna's back, she's facing the bar ordering them drinks.
"She is the best." Naomi drunkenly decides. "Do you know that she keeps dry shampoo in her bag and that she's got these weed candies that taste like yellow SweetTarts? She gave me two. One for now and one for later... Who does that, Bro? She's like a tiny, beautiful, little, tattooed drug pixie. I think you should marry her." Naomi declares.
"Good thing you chose first then, hunh?" Luna comments with a huge smile as she joins Colson and Naomi.
Holding her Old Fashioned, she passes Colson his Henny straight up. Always having a trick up her sleeve, Luna easily passes Naomi her seltzer and lime as a vodka and seltzer. She's too drunk to tell the difference and water is gooood.
"I love this SON OF A BITCH!!" Naomi shouts as she grabs ahold of Colson. "Will you take a quick picture of us?" She asks Luna, handing over her phone.
"Sure... Hold on... Ready?" Luna asks trying to set them up.
It's in the the dark. On a phone's camera. In a club. Looking at it, it is definitely NOT her best work.
"I can retake it." Luna offers.
"No!! I love it" Naomi gushes as she hugs Luna. "Catch you later?" She asks, pointing at Colson's confused nod. Two quick kisses to each of their cheeks and she's off with a "Cool... Love you guuuuyyyysssss!"
"She's fantastic." Luna states as she watches Naomi disappear.
"SHOTS!" Rook hollers as he makes his way towards Luna and Colson.
"So, I heard you hit Dub." Rook immediately states once they've downed the clear liquor.
"What the fuck... I'm never gonna live that down." Luna groans as she puts her head in her hands.
"Nope." Colson and Rook say in unison, their laughter makes Luna groan even more.
The release party keeps going. Top shelf liquor easily flowing. Everyone's having a blast. Dancing, drinking and joking as they enjoy each other's company. They keep the party rolling until they're kicked out around 430A.
-----------------------------------------------
Almost EVERYBODY comes back to Colson's. That would be The Blonde Don himself, THAT Brooklyn Bitch, Rook, Ashley, Dom, Lamar, Tyree, Noah, Caroline, Phem, Mod, Trippie, Skies, Benny, Bullet and a gaggle of girls.
Ashleigh had decided to go home to her family instead. While Baze and Sam tried to catch some privacy at his spot and Naomi some sleep in her hotel. Slim deciding not to go home but to follow the party as it rages on.
Always having instruments on hand, they begin a jam session. Starting off with the original riffs from Hotel Diablo before twisting them into acoustic versions. Luna and Noah subbing in for Naomi when needed.
Alcohol and blunts roll through the room as they run through different songs, joke and laugh at each other. The party going well into the ACTUAL sunshining morning.
"Yo. That could work.... That acoustic jawn. It's something different and totally sick..." Slim tells Colson as he stops him and Luna on their way upstairs, knowing exactly the seed he's planting.
-----------------------------------------------
"I'm so proud of you." Luna coos as she pulls off her shirt and bra.
"I'm proud of those titties!" A naked Colson laughs. "Now bring 'em hear!" He demands as he pulls Luna closer to him and buries his face in her plump breasts.
"Mmmm.... Show me more of what your proud of." Luna giggles.
"I'm proud of this nipple and this nipple." He says as he lightly nips at them. "I'm proud of this scorpion." He says as he traces it with his tongue. Pulling her shorts off, he kisses each thing. "I'm proud of this leg and this leg...." Colson looks up at her with a cocky grin, grabbing her ass cheeks he pulls her closer to his face. "I'm proud of this pussy." His deep voice says, his lips just barely touching her lips but his baritone easily vibrating her skin.
"Alright." Luna pants as she pulls his face up to hers. "You got me, now give it to me." She says after she kisses his soft lips.
"Get on the bed the way I like." Colson directs Luna.
On all fours she goes, ass in the air, perky and dying in anticipation. Colson gives her one HARD
❗SLAP❗
Making her squirm in delight before dragging her closer to him by her hips. Running his fingers along her lips he can feel her dripping for him. Reaching around, he sticks his finger in her mouth as he enters her. Luna's back arches as she sucks her juices off his finger. Both moaning in pleasure as Colson makes his way deep inside of her.
Releasing her mouth, Colson slaps her ass again. Making Luna buck against him. Slamming her ass into his hips as he fucks her from behind. Colson runs his hand up Luna's bare slender back to the base of her hair. Wrapping his fingers inside her long locks, he grips her hip tighter. Demanding her to cum.
Luna's already came twice before so a yank of the hair is just icing on the cake. Letting her body go, she shakes and quivers as she feels Colson's dick pulsate inside of her as he drops his load.
"Fuck, Luna." Escapes from his pants as he moves her hair to kiss her lower neck, making her purr.
They lay there quietly, Colson's still inside of Luna as he plays with her hair. Just as she's about to drift off, his voice brings her back to reality.
"You're still gonna go tomorrow?" Colson asks lowly as they lay together.
"I have to." She replies lightly as she tries to train her breath.
"You HAVE to take a shit. "You don't HAVE to see Jackson." Colson states as a matter of fact as he rolls out of her.
"But I do have to mindfully wipe my ass after I take a shit." Luna retorts irritated by his frustration.
"What does that even fucking mean?" Colson jerks his head to look at her.
"I don't know..." She giggles as she pulls his face close. "I don't wanna fight though... Can we just be? We never get to just be." Luna says as she drunkenly snuggles into Colson neck.
"You're coming home tomorrow?" He asks with a trembling assertiveness to his tone.
"Absolutely.... Now, can we just be Us?" She answers with a pout as she lifts her head to kiss his neck in reassurance before snuggling deeper into him.
"Yeah, we can just be Us." He sighs as he holds her naked body close to his and kisses her tossled hair.
"It better be just Us...." Colson's heart pounds. "I swear to God, I'll kill 'em both.... Fuck, she's gonna leave me like my mom... She can't... I'll will FUCK some MAJOR shit up... Calm down, Kells. You trust her.... Don't fuck this up by spinning out.... You're not Justin.... You've got her. She KNOWS that.... She loves you." Colson's mind is trying to battle all the underlying insecurities that are bubbling up.
"Bunny... You feel alright?" Luna sits up asking.
"Yeah... Why?" Colson lies.
"Because I can feel you not breathing and your heart pounding through your chest... So... What's up?" She asks as she begins to stroke his hair.
"Ahhhh... Nerves." He sighs, half lying now.
"About?" Luna pries as she continues to stroke his blonde hair.
"Fucking Jackson." He slightly admits as he reaches for a joint.
"And...." Luna continues to lead as he sparks it.
"And that you'll leave me like my mom did." He exhales a cloud of frustrated smoke.
Luna pulls Colson into her chest. Stroking his hair again, she's silent as they share the joint. It's not an awkward silence. It's the sad silence of two children who never had their mothers for different reasons.
Once the joints finished, neither need to speak. Colson reaching over to turn the side light off as Luna slides down comfortably into the bed. Resting his head on the pillow with her arm under his neck, they lay face to face in the dark. Colson pulls her closer by the small of her back as they tangle their legs inside each other. Luna let's out a shuddered breath of content as she falls into Colson's body and hold. Stroking his face, in the dark, there's no words. Just a heartfelt, lingering kiss and one thought that drifts between them both as they fall asleep.
"FUCK, I fucking love you."

———————————————————————————————————–
For the first time in his life, Chris will not be drinking at the club tonight.
Chris has never once been the DD, pretty much bribing or begging his way out of it every time, but tonight, he had made the choice himself, actually asking if it could be him. Once he found out for the first time in a while you were planning on getting drunk, he didn’t mind at all.
When you told him you wanted to get drunk tonight, the first thought he had was keeping you safe, and the best way to do that is being the DD and staying sober the whole night to keep a good eye on you. As soon as he asked to be the DD, the other boys grilled him for it, knowing about the not-so-secret feelings he had for you, that everyone knew about except for you.
For the tour, you had been hired as the boy’s photographer, getting to watch every show from behind the screen of a camera, which you loved endlessly. From the first day you were hired, you knew this was the job that was for you. There’s no way to explain it, you just meshed well with everyone, including the boys. Your favorite, however, had to be the Ecuadorian man that could make you laugh harder than anyone could your entire laugh.
And that’s how it was every time you hung out or even had a conversation, laughter, smiles, and tears. Whenever you left him, there was always bubbly happiness lodged deep in your soul, somehow making you giddier than you already are naturally. Whenever you were down, he would offer an ear to listen, but then never leave before you were happy again. There was never a person before you had a connection with like him. Originally, you thought your job was the biggest blessing in your life, but as time went by, you realized the biggest blessing was him.
The friendship was/is always pure and happy. He flirts with you playfully but never throws any sexual inuendos your way at all. Respect is key, especially for him when it comes to women and you. He’d never want to make you uncomfortable in any way and ruin the odds of you getting together.
Truthfully, he’s had many opportunities to ask you out, kiss you, or make a move, but at the last second, he chickens out, afraid of losing you altogether. The confident composure he has seems to melt when he’s with you, leaving his raw self for you to see, which you absolutely adore. It’s the moments when he’s talking about Ecuador, that you could listen to for hours, his hopes and dreams in life, how much he loves little things like new notebooks to write song lyrics in and sunrises, and his family that truly show the real Chris. He’s absolutely exceptional, and you wish he’d let everyone see that side of him.
Tonight, Clara has taken the opportunity to dress you, so that she can make sure Chris can’t take his eyes off of you, which when she told you, made you roll your own. The outfit she picked for you tonight consists of a black lace bodysuit and a high-waisted leather skirt that reaches down almost to mid-thigh, thank god. Then, she paired some very nice, but practical black heels with it that will make your legs look amazing, yet you’ll still be able to dance well in them. You’re no Gamora, so any incredibly high heels would make you drop to the floor, and not in a good way.
The makeup you go with is light, just normal things plus eyeliner and a nude lipgloss. Your normal straight bob is curled a bit, leaving it lying just above your jaw with one side tucked behind your ear, letting your big silver hoops show. Ironically, a silver cross necklace adorns your neck, lying just above your cleavage.
“Holy shit!” Clara says when you stand to show her your entire look of the night, clapping her hands together happily. Usually, this isn’t your normal club attire, mostly going in a crop top and shorts, but a dress when the occasion is more formal, like tonight.
“Oh fuck,” You say when you finally look at yourself completely in the mirror, “I can’t believe I let you talk me into this.”
“Chris is going to lose his mind! Okay, we gotta go now though, we are gonna be late!” Before you even have a chance to say anything about her comment, she’s dragging you out the door and down the hallway towards the elevators.
“Everyone’s waiting in the lobby for us right now. I can’t wait to see the looks on their faces when they see you,” She squeals with excitement, causing you to laugh.
“You’re magic, Clara, straight up magic.”
The elevator doors open just as you say that, allowing you to view the boys sitting on the couches by the doors on their phones. As you walk over, heels clicking across the marble floor, Zabdiel’s head lifts first, lips parting slightly as his eyes widen, before he smacks Chris sitting next to him. When his eyes meet yours, it seems everything else in the room fades away. His jaw falls open for a split second before it widens into his dashing grin as he stands up to greet you. It seems this triggers all the other boys to look up and they too look like deer in headlights.
“Mami, damn, look at you!” Chris exclaims, making a giggle bubble up inside you. Gently, he pulls you into his arms, offering a quick hug even though he saw you merely hours before. A bright grin mirrors his smile as you pull away.
“Thanks! You don’t look so bad yourself,” You joke causing him to scoff, yet throw an arm around your shoulder as you turn back to the boys.
“Damn!” Rich shouts causing you to burry your face into hands in embarrassment. Attention is not something you always desire, so when you get it, a lot of it, it makes you quite timid.
“Vamos guys lets go I want to get drunk more than ever now,” You say as you look up making everyone burst out laughing. Chris’s grip on you tightens as he leads you towards the backdoor where the van is waiting so you don’t get mobbed with all the fans.
Before you can even get to the van, Chris lets go of you, stepping a few paces ahead to open up the door to the passenger’s side and offers you a hand. A small smile forms on your face as you tip your head down slightly, trying to hide the blood you feel rushing up to your cheeks. As you grab his hand and he helps you into the car, you hear Zabdiel whistle behind you, only adding to the warmth in your cheeks. When you glance back, Chris flips them off causing you to instantly laugh.
Everyone else piles into the van and just before Chris pulls out, he sends you one final smile. The entire ride is filled with carpool karaoke to whatever is on the radio, all ready kick-starting your energy for the night. Before you even get into the club, you can already feel the blood rushing through your veins from the sound of the bass which you can hear in the parking lot.
With the boy’s celebrity statuses, it’s very easy to slip into the club. As soon as you slip inside and hear the beat, your heart seems to feel it, pounding to the same tempo of the music. A hand finds its way around your waist and when you glance over, Chris beams at you.
One of the bouncers leads us to our own personal VIP area on the upper floor. Many couches and chairs lie around a small table, all made with what seems to be luxurious materials. From the couches, one can see the rest of the nightclub where many bodies lie grinding, dancing, and well, making out to the music.
Before we can all even sit down, a waiter comes over, bringing everyone all margaritas. As the waiter makes his way over to you, Chris reaches out and grabs one for you, happily holding it out for you to grab. Your lips wrap around the straw, eyes never leaving Chris’s. The cool Tequilla is welcoming down the back of your throat, the sweetness lingering on your tongue.
“Hm, it’s Patron Anejo, I like it.” This causes Chris to smirk and shake his head at you as he laughs.
“You like any kind of Tequilla.”
“You’ve got a lot of nerve being right.” This makes him burst out laughing as he leans forward a bit, getting closer to you. His hot breath fans your ear, making your hand to grip your beverage a little tighter as a shiver runs down your body.
“I’m always right when it comes to you.” He flirts causing your breath to hitch in your throat. A light chuckle escapes his lips, making your heart skip a beat. Just before you can respond, a hand clasps your wrist.
“Let’s go dancing!” She exclaims and you nod excitedly. Just as you glance back to Chris to ask if he wants to go, he shakes his head.
“I’ll find you later, nena.” Clara yanks you towards the stairs as you gulp down the rest of your margarita, setting it on a server’s tray as he walks by to collect empty glasses. As soon as you hit the main floor, the music seems to be playing much louder, almost making you clasp your hands over your ears from the slight pain. Clara spins around, shouting something at you, and you nod, unable to make out what she’s saying.
To your surprise, she passes right by the dance floor and heads to the bar, grabbing a bartender immediately. Over the music, you still can’t make out what she orders you, but you drink pretty much the same thing so you’ll be fine.
“I ordered us two shots of Grey Goose!” She screams, finally talking at a tone that seems to deafen the bass in your ears. You nod happily, and then the shots are placed in front of you. Simultaneously, you both pick up the shots, holding them up to each other
“To tour, to CNCO, and to our friendship!” She shouts causing you to laugh. Without a second thought, you knock your glass with hers before tipping your head back. The strong vodka makes you make a face at first before it trickles down the back of your throat and out of your mouth. As soon as it hits your stomach, your blood seems to warm instantly.
“Vamos a bailar!” She screams, before pulling you to the dance floor. Within fifteen minutes, the alcohol is circulating your system provides immediate loosening of your muscles, allowing your hips to sway a little easier to the beat of the music.
With your arms in the air, eyes closed, and feet moving to the beat, you feel as if you’re on cloud nine. Any stress you’ve been feeling for the past two weeks, especially thoughts about your relationship with Chris seems to fade away. You don’t want to think about work or anything, just dancing.
For what feels like hours, you and Clara dance, and she makes sure you stay hydrated with alcohol, handing you many margaritas to the point where you become far past tipsy, but man, do you feel amazing.
Men have been trying to dance with you the whole night, and you brushed them off, not wanting any man right now, besides one, but that’s who you’re trying not to think about.
Two hands gently grasp your waist making your body freeze as your backside meets someone’s front. Before you can leap away, hot breath fans your ear.
“It’s only me, hermosa.”
Speak of the devil.
You can practically hear him smiling, probably from scaring you, so you gently roll your hips to the beat, which he follows easily. The grip on your waist tightens as he gets closer to you.
“I’m going to go back up to our lounge!” Clara calls out before walking around me, leaving your drunk ass and Chris. You gulp immediately, muscles tightening out of nervousness.
Lord, have mercy.
“Don’t worry, amor, I’ve got you,” Chris promises from behind you, his lips gently grazing your ear. A deep breath escapes your lips before you slowly begin to move to the beat.
Never before have you danced with Chris like this or in this proximity, but boy, was it electric. Nothing that has happened tonight can top how alive you feel at the moment. Your skin is flushed, thanks to the alcohol running through your system and your heart that hasn’t stopped pounding since you started dancing with the cheeky boy behind you. A lightness has risen inside of you that you haven’t felt in such a long time, yet you're unsure of the cause: Chris or the alcohol.
Suddenly, the two hands on your waist spin you around, and your chest is flush against his. A gasp escapes your lips as your eyes raise to meet his, and you find your faces merely centimeters apart. Your mind seems to shut down completely as he leans downward, lips pressing down on your cheek before moving to your ear.
“Everyone’s ready to leave nena, let’s go.” You find yourself nodding at the words, still in a trance from the charming personality of Chris. He beams at you, sliding a hand around your waist for support before heading towards the exit.
“How are you feeling?” Erick asks upon seeing you at the exit as you all walk out together.
“Nada.” You answer, making everyone laugh, “Estoy borrache y no puedo más.”
“Déjame ayudarte,” Chris responds from behind you as he opens up the door for you at the van. This time, he holds your waist as you step in, and still you almost fall over.
Once everyone is all loaded into the van, the drunken carpool karaoke starts again, but this time, you don’t participate, instead, you watch all the pretty lights and buildings passing by outside the window.
Even in your drunken state, your mind still bounces back to the boy driving the van, making your heart skip a beat. There’s no denying the feelings you have for him; you’ve had them for quite a while. It’s not the alcohol making you light, it’s him. Whenever you’re around the man who’s like sunlight wearing shoes, you just feel relaxed and the best version of yourself. He makes you a better person and makes you want to be better. There’s no one you’d rather spend a day, or a night, with it’s him, it will always be him, and you’re dying to tell him just that.
When you get back to the hotel, Chris practically sprints around the van to open the door for you, then grabs your waist to lift you out. For the first time all night, the other’s don’t make a comment, besides saying goodnight, and head inside, leaving you two alone.
“We definitely have to dance again sometime,” You comment as he slides an arm around your waist, leading you inside. A chuckle escapes his lips as you head for the elevators.
“Well, you definitely have to wear this for me again next time,” He flirts as he lets his thumb run over the lacy fabric of your bodysuit. A blush makes its way up to your cheeks as you smile down to the floor momentarily as you enter the elevator.
“Let me know when and where,” You say as he hits the button for your floor. Instantly, he spins to face you with wide eyes as he lets out a loud laugh.
“Damn mami, you’re extra flirty tonight. Is it just the alcohol, or is the alcohol letting out some secrets that you’ve been keeping from me?” He asks, taking a step towards you, making your chests gently brush.
“I’d say the alcohol is making me a bit too chatty tonight.” You answer and lean up closer to him, gently brushing your lips against his. Electricity shoots through your veins as he stands frozen in place, waiting for you to make a move. When the elevator doors open, you step away, heading down the hallway with a smirk, and he follows how on your heels.
“Amor, you’re bold tonight,” He comments as he leans up against the wall next to the door of your room, while you swipe your keycard. When a loud beep goes off, you push the door open, motioning for him to follow.
“Quit playing with my feelings, baby,” He begs, causing you to spin on your heel to face him just as he shuts the door.
“Oh? You think I care?” You joke, biting your lip. As he steps towards you, he lets out a low chuckle;
“You know you love me mami,” He smirks, causing you to raise an eyebrow, a grin bubbling at your lips.
“And what if I do love you?” You taunt. This catches him completely off guard, causing his lips to part as his body freezes in place. His eyes widen as he stares at you, incredibly shocked by how much the alcohol has made you confess.
“And what if I love you?” He finally asks, eyes meeting yours as he steps closer to you, leaving a foot of space between the two of you.
“Then we’ve been wasting a lot of time, baby.”
“This isn’t the alcohol talking? Are you sure of it?”
“Oh, it most definitely is. I’m certainly not this bold normally. I’m drunk and I love you, but tomorrow morning I’ll be sober, and I’ll love you all the same.”

Quick Japan Web: A Message by Tofubeats with No Destination - A Memory of the Fun Days at the Club
Tofubeats has a column on Quick Japan Web, and the latest post had him talk about filming his music video for “Club,” one of my favorite songs of 2020 so far, and some thoughts about the song after the coronavirus changed our lives. I thought it was a bittersweet post about how Osaka looked during the early days of the coronavirus -- if I am correct, he filmed the video in the middle of March -- and how music and live shows look now while we’re cooped in our homes. Here’s the link to the original Japanese post at Quick Japan Web. Below is the English translation by me.
Starting music production when he was in middle school, Tofubeats carry more than 10 years of experience at 29 years old. Recently, the producer/DJ got noticed for his remix of Sayaka Yamamoto for her first vinyl LP release.
The music video for his new song “Club” from the digital album TBEP, released on March 27, 2020, was supposed to document his live tour but…  Tofubeat talks about what happened and his current thoughts on “Club.”
Filming the video without an audience
It’s been a month since a national emergency was declared. I started to get worried that my body’s starting to get used to the stay-at-home routine, so I opened an exercise video, and now I think pulled a muscle after 30 minutes of full training. Hello, this is Tofubeats. Continuing from last time, this is about making the music video.
youtube
Production was moving along with a plan to have a crew follow my tour and film myself travel and prepare my shows, but more and more events started to get canceled because of the coronavirus. After all the scheduled events got cancelled, the director quickly put together a meeting and gave us this plan:
We will film the music video to the original plan
The event itself got re-scheduled, so we will still book the same venue and shoot the show without an audience.
Where the audience would be, we will include something (the sign) to show the effects of the show getting re-scheduled.
Additionally, we will use past live footage.
At this point, we were a week away from the shoot date. Even though it was so soon, we got to safely book the venue Misono Universe that we were supposed to play, and we filmed without a change in plans. Kiki Vivi Lily adjusted her schedule to come to Osaka even though she was supposed to travel.
The filming crew met early in the morning at the Hi-Hatt office. I told them to do a good amount of preparation there, but the set up was very simple because it was made to be repeatedly used during tour, so with everything like cases all set, prepping and checking took about 10 minutes to finish. After a few hours, we headed to Shinagawa Station. Usually we take a taxi, but we got a car to film our travel to the station. We got a car because of comments from people saying how “songs with Tofubeats where a car comes out are cool.” [laughs]
Before, filming for the video of “Lonely Night,” I was nervous driving a car with the steering wheel on the left side for the first time, so I think here you can see me drive more comfortably. That time, I thought I should practice driving on the left side, so I went to a car rental in Nishimiya but they only had these expensive BMWs. Even though I was supposed to drive an SUV in the video, I remember half in tears driving this low car on the Hanshin Highway. Alone.
Maybe people are going to forget about the club
Going back to the story, after heading to Shinagawa Station from the office, we took a shinkansen to Shin-Osaka. Inside the rare, empty train car, it ran “COVID-19” on the captions over and over again, and even though it was before the national emergency, I got a feeling that our world was slowly changing. When we arrived at the streets of Osaka, I think it looked the same as before. After going through the city, we got to the venue. It was sad to see the “postponed” sign at the entrance of Universe.
Though the venue wasn’t going to have an audience, we did the same thing as if we did. We got out and checked the equipment, played some sound, and did soundcheck on the floor, and then the actual show… That was how it supposed to go, but I think I sang more than 10 times including rehearsals. Even though we didn’t use the actual sound, both of us performed as if it was the real thing.
During the show, it surprisingly didn’t bother me to perform in front of no one, but it felt strange to suddenly notice that there’s only a camera in the crowd or to have the “postponed” sign out. I DJed a few events after this, but I think I got to show a little that this would be the last day I would get to perform live at a venue.
Tumblr media
As I often write, “Club” was made before the coronavirus (the finishing process overlapped, but I’ve had things like the lyrics done beforehand), but the circumstances completely changed since when I wrote about “going to the club if I can” with an attention to detail. When I watched the finished video, and saw clip after clip from DJ sets and shows that I didn’t think much of at the time, I got this strange feeling thinking, “was there really a time I performed in front of such a packed crowd?”
There’s a lot of old songs I made imagining the club, and I think I was exaggerating or romanticizing it. I thought it needed some drive like that to communicate to people through a pop song.
But I also wanted to write more straightforward. There were years where I couldn’t, and it was now that I finally had the skills (mostly lyric writing) to do it. But this message went out without anywhere to go and it’s now drifting without anywhere to be. Maybe people will just keep staying at home and forget all about the club. [laughs] It would be great if you can enjoy it as a memory of the days when the club was fun and as a promise to meet again.

“Are you sure that’s safe?” Jace asked, gesturing at all of him.
“They’re not bulls. They don’t lose their minds when they see red.” Raz rolled his eyes, “And look at you. You’re not even dressed!”
Jace shrugged, “I didn’t know what to wear. I don’t know how fancy this place is.”
Raz groaned at that and pushed past the gawky cripple, heading uninvited into his bedroom and, from there, into his closet. Jace did not follow him, just staying where he was, letting his stylist do whatever he needed to.
There was his spare uniform, a bunch of ratty old band t-shirts that Raz wanted to burn, and wife beaters. He had to really dig to find something that would work. In the very back was a black suit, worn last at a funeral for another NHPF officer who had died on the job. He took the slacks from it, as well as the belt. Somewhere in there he found a shirt that would work as well. It was another button up, but it had short sleeves and was a pale gold with a subtle plaid. Terrin had bought it for him, hoping that he would dress half decently if he had the materials, but that had obviously failed.
He walked out of the room and placed them delicately in Jace’s free arm, “There. Now go dress up like an adult.”
“I am an adult.” Jace glared at him.
“Oh, of course you are.” Raz threw up his hands in mock surrender, “And if you don’t change your attitude, I may just have to put you in time out.”
Jace stuck his tongue out at him but he limped into his bedroom.
When he came out, his golden shirt untucked, Raz made a face, pointing out the flaw. Jace groaned but did as he was told. He hated tucking in shirts. It was for old men and accountants. He wasn’t either one of those. He was a man of action.
When he was done though Raz’s eyes lit up and that was worth all of it. He looked pleased and excited and Jace absorbed his friend’s adoration. It was like basking in the sun. He felt warmed by how Raz looked, like he was attractive and whole and perfect, and he truly felt that way. He did not feel like a cripple in Raz’s stare, he felt like he was supposed to be. He felt like he could get any woman that he wanted.
He wondered if this was how Raz always felt.
He slipped into his shoes, black loafers that Raz had also dug out of the hidden corners of his closet and a black leather jacket that he had bought to go with the Harley he had always planned on owning. He always felt good in that coat, like he was tough and manly and handsome, like he wasn’t just background in Raz’s love life, an interesting prop.
With that they were ready and Raz led the way, calling up the elevator and staying silent inside.
Jace no longer felt so nervous. He could do this; he could go to a vampire club. He had his wingman and a little bit of alcohol in his system, and he smelled strongly of aftershave. He was young; he was supposed to go to clubs. This was the most exclusive one that existed in the whole of Soom.
Raz’s car was parked on the street. It wasn’t a great car, wasn’t expensive, but it was in perfect condition. It had been waxed and cared for until it was shiny, no rust or dents or mud on the bright red body, making it look fast and like there had been an extra zero in the price. It was like everything in Raz’s life. It doesn’t have to be expensive, but you have to treat it like it is, make it expensive. Other than booze and Jace, it was applied to everything. Feeling as he was all dressed up, Jace was convinced that Raz was right. If something was treated right, it felt like it had more value than diamonds.
He climbed into the passenger seat, his cane in his lap. Raz was in the driver’s seat, turning down the music and turning it to some old rock station, leaving the poppy dance music that he enjoyed so much. Raz listened to music like he was always at a club, the bass high, the volume monumental, the beats rhythmic and aggressive. He belonged in a club, surrounded by young women, taking a few of them home. He knew it wasn’t Jace’s thing though so he changed it to what he liked.
He always treated the things he loved with the utmost care.
They had started the drive in silence, Jace only mouthing the words to Pink Floyd’s Have a Cigar. Raz kept an eye on him, not knowing the words, and a little bit unsure. Jace rarely sang along with the music when other people were there, but he felt good, in control of his own body for the first time in a long time.
When the song was over, Pink Floyd replaced with Born to be Kings by Queen, Raz turned it up a bit and sang out loud. He didn’t know many of the words and he didn’t have a great voice, but that didn’t matter. He was singing and then Jace was singing too. They weren’t singing for very long though as the singing got too loud. They couldn’t hear the words, they were shouting the lyrics.
“We’re the princes of the universe.”
Jace thought maybe this should happen more often, going to clubs. But it wasn’t the clubbing that was fun. It was being there, with his friend, ignoring his problems and singing old songs poorly. It was the joy of it.
He almost wished that they could just keep driving, not even enter the vampire club.

Years & Years star Olly Alexander: 'The landscape has changed for queer artists'
Growing up in Blackpool, Olly Alexander lived next door to a church. As a young gay man, that presented him with a dilemma.
"I was always aware that, in the bible, homosexuality was viewed as sinful and that's always stayed with me," says the singer.
"But I really love religious iconography and religious language because it's so powerful and so evocative... so now I love to play around with that and subvert it."
He certainly achieves that goal on Years & Years' recent single, Sanctify, which characterises being gay as a sacred act. ("Maybe it's heavenly," sings Alexander in the bridge.)
"I love a bit of drama," laughs the singer, "and it doesn't get more dramatic than sanctifying your sins when you pray."
The 27-year-old was inspired to write the song after a brief relationship with a straight man.
"He told me was straight and we became friends, and at a certain point the relationship tipped over into something more intimate - and it felt like we were becoming lovers," explains the singer.
"And suddenly, there was just an explosion of pain and conflict."
The lyrics acknowledge the central tension of the relationship - with Alexander playing both the devil who tempts his lover to "sinfulness" and the angel who "walks through the fire" to help him explore his sexuality.
"I've been out as a gay guy for nearly 10 years, and I know how that journey of coming to terms with your own identity can be really painful," he says.
"I wanted to write something that spoke to that experience."
The single - Years & Years' first new material since 2016 - forms part of a larger, mainstream cultural movement addressing sexuality and gender fluidity; via films like Call Me By Your Name and Love, Simon, and the lyrics of gay and queer artists such as Frank Ocean, Christine & The Queens, Muna and Troye Sivan.
"The landscape has changed dramatically for queer artists," says Alexander.
"In the past, we've all been familiar with pop stars coming out in the middle of their careers, or after they've become huge and that feels like a heavy narrative to queer people.
"Now it seems to be really changing that artists can be out from the start of their career; and it's not some sort of sensationalised headline.
"Of course, there are people who still really struggle with being out, and I know some artists think it might damage their career - but I don't think the tabloids making a splash about sexuality would still happen.
"I think - I think - we can call that progress."
'Barriers to overcome'
Alexander made headlines himself recently, after revealing he was advised to keep his sexuality hidden at the start of Years & Years' career.
Was he surprised at how widely the comments were reported?
"I understand why it's a story," he says. "I think lots of people are shocked when they hear about homophobia, because they think, 'Oh, it's 2018, surely everything's fine now?' But queer people know that it's not.
"There's so much stigma still around being who you are, and there are still so many barriers to overcome.
"So it's an exciting time - but we've got a long way to go, and I think we need to stay vigilant".
Alexander has emerged as one of music's leading voices on sexuality and mental health since Years & Years won the BBC's Sound Of 2015.
"A lifeline to troubled young people," is how the Observer described him in 2016; while Gay Times wrote he was "one of the most influential gay pop stars of this generation," adding with a flourish: "All hail the King!"
The singer has spoken candidly about being bullied at school, and how he was burdened with anxiety and depression because "society taught me being gay was not normal".
Even now, he says "romantic relationships [are] quite hard because there's a lot of emotional trauma and emotional baggage that is kind of present".
"I'm kind of a self-sabotager," he says. "And there's so many reasons for that - but I should save those for my therapist."
Or for his lyrics...
Years & Years' second album, Palo Santo - launched this morning with a short film featuring Dame Judi Dench - is an intoxicating brew of streamlined, kinetic electro-pop that's haunted by bad relationships.
From the boyfriends Alexander dumped or was dumped by, to his estranged father and the "enemies" he battles on a song called Karma, it sounds like the star's been put through the wringer over the last couple of years.
"Oh, does it?" he says, surprised.
"I always present a confident, optimistic front in my daily life, and I try not to let negativity come through. But in songs, that's how I process those emotions and complex feelings. So I don't know that I've been through the wringer, as much as this is just how I process my experiences."
Still, there are quite a lot of break-ups on the record.
"Actually, you're right. It's quite a petty album," he concedes. "When I listened to it all the way through, I was like, 'Wow, I was so angry!'
"But it's good to show that stuff, you know? I think it's human."
Not everyone agrees. Someone close to the band recently told Alexander his lyrics were "not accessible enough".
He won't say who - but they're wrong. Alexander's unvarnished account of his demons, desires and doubts is what makes fans clasp Years & Years to their hearts.
The best pop music, after all, is written by outsiders for outsiders.
"I think so," he agrees. "Pop can be a Trojan Horse. You can dress it up as a dancehall banger but actually it can have a deep meaning inside of its shiny coating."
That's exemplified on Hallelujah, a frisky disco track about the joy of dancing with strangers that also looks at the loneliness of random hook-ups.
"I used to go clubbing a lot, and a lot of that time it was because I wanted to meet somebody," explains Alexander.
"I just wanted to find a connection and it didn't matter who it was, sometimes. There was a real, almost dark energy that was propelling me to keep going out. But there was also a redemptive quality to doing that.
"I think a lot about how clubs are almost like queer churches. You go and congregate and you dance. That's always been a sacred experience for me, although it's been both positive and negative. I wanted to write a song that flitted between those two things."
Does he still go out clubbing, or has fame made it impossible?
"Not as much as I used to, for sure. There have been a couple of times where people just want to take pictures of you.
"And the last place I want to have my picture taken," he says, a grin spreading across his face, "is when I'm embarrassing myself in a sweaty drunk mess in a club."
As for relationships, Alexander says "all options are on the table" - but one in particular stands out.
"What I think would suit me was if I was in a thruple and the other two guys lived in a house nearby," he laughs.
"I could visit them every now and then and they'd cook me dinner, and then I could just go home and watch TV by myself."

You Make Me Not Wanna Die: The return of the Pop Menagerie playlist! It’s been way too long since I posted anything on this blog. My only excuse is that I’ve had a crazy year in my personal life and sometimes internet things take a back seat to self care. But right now, I think my best form of self care is listening to and sharing my pop culture faves so I’m back to do just that. I’m starting off with a playlist that contains songs I love to sing along to, cry along to, dance along to, write along to, and think along to. Almost all of these songs are from albums released in 2017, although there may be an exception here or there for songs released earlier that I only discovered recently.  In any case, here you go. Enjoy!  1. Allie X - That’s So Us If you love Carly Rae Jepsen, you should love Allie X. This song makes me so happy, and also it makes me cry sometimes because it reminds me of those people that you really can be yourself around and they love you anyway. Those people are rare and wonderful, and if you are one of them for me, then thank you. “You make me not wanna die,” as the song says. I love that line so much I used it to title this playlist.  2. The Drums - Shoot the Sun Down Remember these guys? Kind of sunny indie pop, hit it big with “I Don’t Know How To Love” off of their album Portamento back in 2012? Yeah. They are still here, still awesome, and the album this came from just gives me shivers it’s so freaking great. Also, I joke that this song is dedicated to my cat when she tries to bite and scratch me at night, because of that repeating line, “I put a blanket over my face.” Nena, this one’s for you. 3. Knuckle Puck - Conduit I have such a goddamn soft spot for emo-leaning pop punk, you guys. I can’t even lie. As a bonus, they’re from the Chicago area so technically I can claim them as a local band. This song reminds me of the best of Blink 182, early Jimmy Eat World, and maybe even a little Brand New. I also love the lyrics, with their references to grinding teeth and lucid dreams. Definitely relatable for me. 4. MUNA - End of Desire You might be familiar with MUNA if you love Tegan and Sara, because this band appears on The Con: X covering Relief Next To Me. I love the way their voices blend, and I love the vulnerability of the lyrics. This song is open to interpretation, but it seems to allude to having feelings for another person that you didn’t ask for but can’t get rid of. Who hasn’t been there?  5. Kiasmos - Jarred The Icelandic duo is back with more incredible, chilly electronic tunes that almost sound like icicles forming or frost creeping up the inside of your window pane in the night. This song definitely makes me want to hop the next plane to Reykjavik and spend a week sipping dark liquor in some poorly lit club that only the locals know about.  6. MUTEMATH - War You know about my love of MUTEMATH by now. Their latest album goes in so many different directions musically--not just from one song to the next but within the space of a single track. This one is a banger live, and one of my favorites on the album. Lyrically, it reminds me of my own not so great tendency to get heated as I try to convince someone they’re wrong and I’m right. A good debate is healthy sometimes, but not everything needs to be a battle for the ages. “War’s in my nature,” all right. But I’m trying to find a way toward peace. 7. Cat Dealers/Groove Delight - Calabria This is just a sick dance track. I can’t claim to know all that much about Cat Dealers, although I know they hail from Rio de Janeiro and that this song makes me want to tear it up on the dancefloor or the living room or the driver’s seat of my car. Groove Delight is Brazilian as well, making me think I probably need to go to Brazil sooner rather than later to discover what other booty shaking gems I’ve been missing.  8. Converge - A Single Tear Can you believe these guys have been around for 27 years? This song encapsulates so many things I love about them, from their always insane percussion to the insistent guitar melodies to the impassioned vocals of Jacob Bannon. The lyrics (which allude to “holding you for the first time,” presumably about becoming a parent) are so sweet, a word that doesn’t probably come up in a lot of reviews of metal and hardcore songs but still, I stand by it.  9. Luna Shadows - Jesus Christ (Brand New cover) I have always loved this song, and it’s awesome to hear a young up and coming artist take it on. She really puts her own spin on this classic of the emo genre, and I look forward to hearing more original tunes from her.  10. ROMES - Someone I just saw these guys open for MUTEMATH and they have so much energy live! Canadian by way of Ireland, they bring out anthemic indie pop tunes that are just irresistible. I’m reminded a little bit of Peter Gabriel and a little bit of Bastille, but not in a derivative way.  11. Fever Ray - Red Trails Ahhhhh! Fever Ray is back!!!! It’s been way too long since we’ve heard from her, but the album that she just released online helps make up for the absence because it just kills. She still has that haunting, hypnotic voice layered on top of unexpected instrumentation and arrhythmic beats. The lyrics are mysterious and dark. There’s something sexy about it but not in a Britney Spears way. She sounds kind of dangerous but you can’t help but want to follow her wherever she’s going.  12. ABRA - Bounty Speaking of hypnotic and sexy, ABRA is definitely both. Based in Atlanta, she sounds like she’s based in another planet altogether. Her off kilter brand of R&B does not fit any category--she has this supple voice that leads us along across breathy beats and frantic counter melodies. It’s unsettling and gorgeous at the same time.  13. Tove Lo - Disco Tits Tove Lo is my ride or die. She’s unabashedly herself in all her nympho trashy glory, and I adore her for it. I promise I’m not into club drugs, but Euro pop songs about them sure are fun. I put this song on the car radio when I’m driving to work just to wake myself up and then have to make sure my phone volume is on mute before I walk into the office because “nipples are hard ready to go” is probably not appropriate lyrical content for the workplace.  14. Golden Features - Funeral Tom Stell, aka Golden Features, has sold out tours in his native country of Australia but it won’t belong before he’s selling out everywhere. This track makes me want to see him in an underground dance club at 4am. It’s fire.  15. Jessie Ware - Stay Awake, Wait For Me Another one of my faves is back! I love her upbeat songs but this is one of those instant classic pop ballads, and I had to find a spot for it on this list. It’s intimate and romantic and sexy in a grown up way. Don’t put this song on if you’re trying to be celibate, is all I’m saying.  16. Hundred Waters - Particle If you miss Imogen Heap/Frou Frou, you should most definitely be listening to Hundred Waters. Nicole Miglis has that hushed tone in her voice that belies intense feeling, and the skittering electronic elements fill the spaces in between as a sort of musical representation of anxiety and uncertainty. This song, about a romantic coupling that seems lopsided. “I’m only a particle, a drop in you, forever dissolving,” she sings. Damn.
17. The Tuts- Dump Your Boyfriend What’s not to love about this UK based garage girl group? This song describes the kind of toxic relationship that it’s easy to criticize from the outside but harder to shake when you’re the one who’s in love with an asshole.  18. Fellwarden - Sun of an Ending This kind of moody, atmospheric black metal is so soothing to me. It feels ancient and primal, like the old gods are still roaming the land slaying dragons and protecting those that live in their realm. If you’re a black metal fan, you may recognize the vocals as those of Fen frontman The Watcher.   19. Palehound - Silver Toaster On Boston-based Palehound’s second album, the writing sounds more self-assured and the songs even more personal than those on the debut. Frontwoman Ellen Kempner attributes this in part to being more comfortable in her own skin as a queer-identifying woman, and in part to being in her first healthy adult relationship. This song is short and simple, but I love the unexpected turns of phrase and imagery, like the line, “hack off my split ends.” There are plenty of bands doing the whole DIY stripped down aesthetic, but this one rises above the rest. If you were into artists like Kimya Dawson and Mary Lou Lord, you should definitely be paying attention to Palehound.
20. Kelsea Ballerini - Miss Me More Nominated for a Best New Artist Grammy earlier this year, Kelsea Ballerini hits the ground running on her latest release. She’s been writing songs since she was 12 years old and listening to Britney, Christina, and N Sync. Something about the fact that she considers Shania her biggest influence really charms me. I am obsessed with this song, which I can relate to on a very personal level. Sometimes you don’t realize how much you’ve compromised yourself for another person until you don’t have them in your life anymore and suddenly the real you starts to re-emerge.  21. The Maharajas - Too Late To Repent If you hear this song and think it must be a re-release of some little known 1960s garage rock/British Invasion group, I don’t blame you. I wondered that myself. But it turns out these Swedish dudes have only been active since the 90s, and they are still recording music that sounds like it’s from a bygone era. A little Kinks, a little Beatles, a little surf rock--it’s all here and it’s all great.  22. Margo Price - Don’t Say It This Illinois native was signed by Jack White to Third Man Records, and she recorded her debut album at Sun Studios in Memphis. Both of those things make sense upon hearing her traditional country sound. She has one of those clear, classic voices that really do harken back to the Lorettas and Patsys and Tammys. Her second album even features a duet with Willie Nelson, proving that she’s definitely earned her classic country bonafides.  23. Peaness - Skin Surfing OK, yes, initially I was drawn to this 3-piece English band because of their silly name. But once I heard the first guitar strums and vocal harmonies, I was truly done for. Formed in 2014, they have songs about everything from wasting food just because it doesn’t look aesthetically pleasing (”Ugly Veg”) to George Osborne of Brexit fame (”Oh George”). This song is very seductive while staying playful and affirming consent. I dig the occasional Veruca Salt vibes it dips into as well.  24. Dori Freeman - Ern & Zorry’s Sneakin’ Bitin’ Dog I guess an acapella song about a mean neighbor dog might be an odd choice for a playlist but it’s so adorable I couldn’t leave it out. Dori Freeman, who cites Peggy Lee and Rufus Wainwright as her major influences, hails from Virginia and her songs have an Appalachian flavor. I predict a T-Bone Burnett collaboration in her future.    25. The Blow - Summer It’s hard to believe The Blow has existed in some form for going on 20 years, but it’s true. The K Records vets continue to release hypnotic, electronic indie pop with a lo-fi feel, and this song has been stuck in my head from the first listen. It’s a simple melody but good luck escaping that hook.  26. Austra - Beyond a Mortal The Canadian dark wave is back with their third album, this time recorded in Mexico. For this particular track, singer Katie Stelmanis says she recorded the vocals over 100 times to achieve the hushed, whispery effect. The rest of the album, titled Future Politics, is a meditation on the state of the world as it is now and what we all wish it could become.  27. MGMT - Little Dark Age Finally! It’s been 5 years since MGMT’s last album, and even longer since the world sat up and took notice of them. This lead single off their upcoming album makes me think that they’re poised to re-take the synth pop throne. This song has elements of their earliest work, but it also incorporates bits of industrial and even krautrock. I listen and think Depeche Mode! Kraftwerk! Skinny Puppy! So many of my musical faves somehow distilled into a single track. I can only hope that the rest of the album lives up to this single. 28. Charlotte Gainsbourg - Ring-a-Ring O’Roses To me, there’s always been an otherworldly quality to Charlotte Gainsbourg’s voice. She took some time off from music to do some acting, notably in Lars Von Trier’s Nymphomaniac volume 1 and volume 2 and Melancholia. Those films required heavy lifting and emotional degradation, which perhaps allowed her to tap into a deeper place when recording the songs for this album, her first in seven years. The video for this song features Gainsbourg’s son, carrying on the family tradition started by Charlotte and her father Serge Gainsbourg.  29. Sun Glitters - Where the End Begins If there’s one thing I love, it’s shimmery electronic music. And Sun Glitters, who hails from Luxembourg, produces just that. Rarely does an artist’s name so aptly describe their sound, but this is one such perfect marriage. If you enjoy the likes of Gold Panda, Boards of Canada, Fennesz, Teen Daze, or Blackbird Blackbird, you will definitely dig this sound.

You’re 27. Here Are Millions to Stage Your Musical.
The New York Times, Feb. 18, 2007
IT was late and cold, and outside the nightclub Pacha in far west Midtown a boyish-looking man in a suit and sneakers was walking up to the front doors. Inside, the club was crowded: an eight-piece Latin band was playing, people were dancing and drinking tequila cocktails; it was, as little as the scene may have looked it, an opening-night party for a new Off Broadway musical.
The young man approached the large bouncers out front. “Let me in,” he said, laughing like an under-age teenager who knew he’d get away with it. “I’m the guy who wrote the play.”
Lin-Manuel Miranda was in a good mood, and for good reason. In the Heights, a Latin and hip-hop musical set in a block or two of the Latino neighborhood of Washington Heights, had just opened, after seven years of work, in a $2.5 million Off Broadway production.
The reviews were trickling in, and they ranged from mostly warm (Charles Isherwood in The New York Times called the musical “light and sweet”) to mostly glowing (“bursts with a vitality and freshness” said the New York Post reviewer).
A good night for the creative team, most of whom are at least a decade younger than the average Broadway theatergoer: Mr. Miranda, the conceiver, composer, lyricist and star just turned 27; Quiara Alegría Hudes, who wrote the book, is 29; and Thomas Kail, the director, just turned 30. To see people so young involved with a big project like this could be sweet tonic for those inclined to fret about the Future of the American Musical, which explains the buzz that has followed this production for years.
But all this youth could also prompt a not-preposterous question: How did they get to be at the helm of a $2.5 million commercial production in the first place?
While it may seem that Mr. Miranda brought hip-hop and Latin-flavored sounds to the traditional musical, he was actually a Broadway baby first. His father, a community organizer turned major league political consultant, and his mother, a psychologist — both from Puerto Rico — introduced him early on to Man of La Mancha and The Unsinkable Molly Brown. By the time he graduated from the elite Hunter College High School, Mr. Miranda had acted in a string of school shows, directed a production of West Side Story and written several musicals (including a few “very Les Miz-ish” numbers for a musical adaptation of Chaim Potok’s Chosen).
So he has musical bona fides. What about the experience of growing up in Washington Heights? “Most of my friends were white and Jewish,” said Mr. Miranda, a profoundly affable young man who constantly shifts between energized and self-deprecating. As for the local Latino teenagers, “I was pretty isolated from them.”
With few friends in the neighborhood where he lived, weekends meant a lot of watching television, listening to music and making home-made movies. “I was really a self-entertained kid,” he said.
But later, like countless college students before him, Mr. Miranda discovered where he was from once he had left. At Wesleyan University, in Middletown, Conn., he moved into the Latino student house; one summer in college he got a job covering Washington Heights for Manhattan Times, which became a kind of seminar course on the neighborhood and its residents.
When he decided to write a musical for a theater on campus, he drew on the boleros and traditional Latin sounds he had mostly ignored growing up, and the wordplay of lyrically dexterous rap groups like the Pharcyde and Black Sheep he listened to in high school. The early version of In the Heights was a campus hit his sophomore year.
At first the show centered on a love triangle. Two characters — Nina, a Heights resident who becomes something of an outsider when she leaves for a prestigious university, and Benny, an outsider because he is not Latino — are still part of the show. Another — Lincoln, Nina’s closeted brother, who has a crush on Benny — would be gradually phased out.
The focus on outsiders, people who are in the neighborhood but are not exactly of the neighborhood, was no coincidence given Mr. Miranda’s experience, which also goes some way toward explaining the neighborhood’s rose-tinted portrait. But the genre tends to be filled with those kind of characters anyway.
“It was an amalgam of every musical I’d ever seen,” Mr. Miranda said, citing Rent, West Side Story and Fiddler on the Roof in particular.
Mr. Kail, who had graduated from Wesleyan ahead of Mr. Miranda, was given a recording of Heights by fellow alumni with whom he had started a theater company, Back House Productions, in the basement of the Drama Bookshop on West 40th Street in Manhattan. They staged a few workshops, and the buzz grew among the abidingly older and whiter Broadway crowd: A new musical. By a young guy. A Latino guy. And it’s got rap, but rap that appeals to people who normally don’t like rap.
The show might well have languished for years in readings. It could have been picked up for a musical festival. An interested producer could have taken it to a nonprofit. An especially confident producer could have brought in a new, more experienced team to rework it, and presented the show commercially.
But none of that happened. Jill Furman was the first producer to express serious interest; she was followed by Kevin McCollum and Jeffrey Seller, the power hitters whose specialty is finding left-field hits like Rent and Avenue Q.
Mr. Kail stayed onboard. When it became clear that Mr. Miranda, in addition to conceiving, composing, writing lyrics and acting, could not also tackle the book — which everyone agreed needed the most work — Ms. Furman found Ms. Hudes, who, like Mr. Miranda, grew up in a mostly Latino neighborhood (in Philadelphia) and went to a prestigious northeastern university (Yale). She was also, at the time, 25 years old.
Workshops were held at the Manhattan Theater Club, followed by a stint at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center in Waterford, Conn., and another semi-staged workshop in New York. But there was no question where the show this was headed.
As the play was being reworked, the producers talked to nonprofit theaters around town in search of a stage big enough to contain a neighborhood. Well, as luck would have it, Mr. McCollum and Mr. Seller are part owners of a young Off Broadway theater, 37 Arts, at 37th Street near 10th Avenue, which had been longing for a show that could draw audiences that far west.
Running a show commercially costs money, but the producers said that if they had put on the show in a nonprofit theater, they would have contributed about $1.5 million — and would have lost control.
“There was so much enthusiasm for the talent involved with this show,” Mr. Seller said, “that spending $1.5 million to do it at a resident theater company versus spending $2.5 million to do it Off Broadway became a wash for us.”
Mr. Kail said that while many Off Broadway shows are scrambling to cut as many characters as possible to save on costs, the producers of Heights hired five more people. The cast has now swelled to 22.
So this is how a 27-year-old more-or-less-untried songwriter and actor ended up at the front of a large, multimillion-dollar production which seems, if not Broadway bound, at least Broadway oriented.
The Seller-McCollum approach — finding already-conceptualized projects, usually in the hands of novices, and getting them onstage — does carry risks for the producers. The last venture they helped produce, the $10 million musical High Fidelity, was loaded with young talent. It closed on Broadway in December within two weeks of opening, one of the high-profile disasters of this season.
But does the approach carry a comparable risk for a young artist? Mr. Seller offers an emphatic no.
“So many young musical theater writers, directors and choreographers are not getting the chance to learn their craft, because no one’s giving them the tools to do a show,” he said. “If they fail, they will learn from it and go on to their next project, and if they succeed, well, they will learn from it and go on to their next project.”
Mr. Miranda of course said he had only been thinking as far as opening night. But after working for seven years on a show that encompasses much of his life, does he worry about a follow-up?
“I have tons of ideas,” he said. “Literally if have a file on my computer which I call Post-“Heights.” It’s growing. But, yeah, I know that a good deal of childhood and my young adulthood is in this show. And so yeah, it’s um, it’s um —” He paused, uncharacteristically. “That’s a great question.”

The Beatles: The day I sang with the Beatles
In the 50th anniversary of the end of the band, Lizzie Bravo, fan and author of books about the magical quartet of Liverpool, shares what it was like to meet the idols

Lizzie Bravo with John Lennon, in 1967 (Lizzie Bravo / Lucy R / Personal archive)
My name is Lizzie (nickname of Elizabeth), carioca from the suburb, turns 69 in May, mother of Marya (48) and Morgana's grandmother (27). I started to like Beatles at the beginning of 1964. The more time passed, the more I got deeper into listening to his records, watching movies, reading magazines and books, everything that would get me to know the band better. A lifelong passion began …
My friend Denise and I went to London in early 1967 as a 15-year gift. The purpose of the trip was to meet the Beatles, and I was so lucky that I saw the four Beatles, your manager Brian Epstein and the roadie Mal Evans the same day I arrived, February 14, 1967. They were leaving EMI studios in Abbey Road, after another day recording what would become the LP “Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band ”. Denise had arrived shortly before and already knew everything, where they lived, where they recorded, and that was fundamental for me!
She returned to Rio after the school holidays, but I stayed. Fascinated with the possibility of seeing my idol John Lennon and his companions almost every day in and out of the studios, I spent few and good jobs in various cleaning jobs (middle-class girl, who had never made a bed…) to continue in London, since my parents said they would not send me more money, wanting me to come back (later they changed their mind …). The Beatles they were very simple and accessible, in a way that I think must be difficult for young people today to understand, since things have changed so much when it comes to famous people. They chatted with us, posed for photos, signed autographs, received the flowers and gifts we took with them.

A few days before completing a year in the city, I was invited by Paul to sing the vocals in a composition of the John, “Across the Universe”. I took an English friend with me, Gayleen, who was waiting for them outside with me. A couple of hours inside the studios, with the four Beatles present, the producer George Martin and helpers Mal Evans and Neil Aspinall. I sang first on the same microphone with my idol John, then with Paul. There were moments in the Beatle-paradise! We were both used to seeing them often, so we were very comfortable next to them, laughing at the antics, enjoying every minute. Who knew, a girl from Rio de Janeiro recording with the greatest band of all time!

In 1967, they were always together. They arrived in their cars or sometimes the four of them in a single car, with a driver. They often went out together after the recordings, probably for dinner or some party or bar. Sometimes their wives arrived to go out with them. Paul was still single, but he was dating actress Jane Asher. Over time, this was slowly changing. All married, with other interests, that cling of the beginning was dissolving. I never saw any disagreement between them, but when I returned to Brazil, in late October 1969, I sensed that something could change.
– (Lizzie Bravo / Personal archive)
For this reason, the news of the separation had little effect on me. It felt like a natural progression from what I had lived outside the studios. I don't remember being sad or regretting it. The truth is that they ended up at their peak, leaving an impeccable, timeless, eternal work. But … I fully understand the sadness and disenchantment of the thousands of fans who were not close to them and took that scare.
Yesterday I just realized another reason why I didn't care so much… in March 1970, I met and started dating the nostalgic Zé Rodrix, whom I eventually married and we had our daughter Marya. Few people know, but I am “the hope of glasses” and Marya “a cool kid” from the song “Casa no Campo”, with lyrics by Zé and music by another dear and longing, Tavito. For sure, dating was a priority at that time!
But the Beatles never left my life!
