Glee star Darren Criss says he is 'culturally queer' thanks to San Francisco upbringing
When Darren Criss broke out on Glee, he instantly became a "teenage dream" for viewers — especially for LGBTQ+ audiences, who were able to see themselves represented in a new way in television.
Criss himself identities as a straight, cisgender man, but he says that his upbringing in San Francisco, Calif., helped him understand the importance of his character, Blaine, and his character's relationship with Kurt (Chris Colfer).
When asked at the Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo (C2E2), what it was like portraying the groundbreaking relationship on television, Criss replied, "It was f---ing awesome.... Nowadays, we just call it a relationship on TV. But to contextualize it, a gay relationship on mainstream Fox, that's a pretty cool thing to be a part of," he said, adding emphasis when naming the network.
"I have been so culturally queer my whole life," he continued while appearing on a panel over the weekend. "Not because I'm trying — you know, actually, I was gonna say not because I'm trying to be cool but I'm gonna erase that, because I am trying to be cool. The things in my life that I have tried to emulate, learn from and be inspired by are 100 percent queer as f---."
"It was in queer communities that I've found people that I idolize, that I want to learn something from," he said. "And I'd say that's a gross generalization, that's a lot of things and a lot of people. But I grew up in San Francisco in the '90s. I watched men die. There was an awareness of the gay experience that was not a foreign concept to me. So, it was a narrative that I cared deeply about."
Criss also clarified that he didn't feel any ownership or entitlement over the role, but instead, felt a sense of responsibility once he was cast. "[I wasn't] like, 'I'm the man for the job,'" he explained. "They hired me...They said, 'You're the guy,' and I said, 'Okay, I'm the guy, I will do my best. I will do my best to talk about it in the way I believe and a way that I'm passionate about.'"
Criss portrayed Blaine Anderson for five of Glee's six seasons. He was introduced as an openly gay student at Dalton Academy and a member of a cappella group the Warblers in season 2. He recurred throughout the season. In season 3, Criss was upgraded to a series regular and Blaine transferred to William McKinley High School, home of Kurt and the New Directions. When the series ended, Blaine and Kurt were happily married after many ups and downs.
For Criss, Glee's legacy of portraying a relationship on television that so many people hadn't seen before was the most meaningful part of his experience. "In many ways, I'm glad it was me because it was a thing I really liked showing," he reflected. "It meant a great deal to me and it meant a great deal to other people. Because when people say they were affected by that show or that relationship, it's not because of me, it's because of that relationship on TV and the risks that people took to put that on TV."
"It took the people watching it to have the aptitude for seeing beyond what was maybe given to them in other avenues of culture. People of all ages, all spectrums of awareness say, 'I didn't grow up with a show like that and it was a really meaningful thing for me to see,' and I go I didn't grow up with a show like that and that would've been very meaningful for me too. Regardless of the fact that I'm a straight kid. That has value. For anyone who's been an underdog, we all know, in any shape or form — sexual, religious, biological — it has value because there's going to be a lot of people who see that and say, 'Okay, I can now understand this in a context that maybe I wasn't able to before.'
"It was a f-ing privilege," he concluded, "and I love talking about it and I'm so grateful I got to do it."

thanks for the book answer! would you share your fiction favorites in general?
Hi anon,
I'll post a few but I think to clarify - this is also kind of just going to be a list. I meant more like...are you looking for book recs? If so are you looking for specific things (eg: queer characters, fantasy and if so which subtype, sci fi and ditto, literary fiction, etc.) Or do you just like, want a list of books I have liked.
Anyway this is a list of a handful of books/series/authors that I'd count as favorites, loosely grouped, but I didn't go into any details about anything.
Fantasy I read a teen and has permanently shaped how I interact with fantasy fiction; some of this is YA
a large swathe of what Diana Wynne Jones has written
The Belgariad and Mallorean by David Eddings
The Old Kingdom series by Garth Nix
Sorcery and Cecelia by Caroline Stevermer and Patricia Wrede (this came up on the comfort reads panel I watched yesterday and it is indeed a comfort read for me) and Mairelon the Magician by Patricia Wrede (set in the same sort of world)
Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien
I read some of the Patternist series by Octavia Butler as a teen but then didn't revisit it until adulthood
Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell by Susanna Clarke (Piranesi is very different and also excellent but that came out when I was an adult, but it's still a favorite)
The Hero and the Crown by Robin McKinley (I also read a bunch of her fairy tale-based books which I don't know if I'd call them favorites still but I do think they're an influence)
Sandman by Neil Gaiman
American Gods by Neil Gaiman
Middlegrade/YA fiction I read as a kid that also permanently shaped something
Several Ellen Raskin books but especially The Westing Game
Elizabeth Enright's books but especially the ones about the Melendy family and Gone-Away Lake
Fantasy and SF I read as an adult and would consider exceptional/a favorite
The Broken Earth Trilogy by N. K. Jemisen
The City and the City by China Mievelle
The Locked Tomb series by Tamsyn Muir
Phedre's trilogy of the Kushiel's Legacy series by Jacqueline Carey (have not read the others in the series so this isn't saying they're bad, I just can't speak to them)
The Southern Reach Trilogy by Jeff VanderMeer
The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K. Leguin
Arcadia by Iain Pears
The Terra Ignota series by Ada Palmer
The Raven Tower by Ann Leckie
The Vorkosigan Saga by Lois McMaster Bujold
The Night Watch books from Discworld by Terry Pratchett; I have read like, one other Discworld book and it didn't have Sam Vimes in it so I didn't really care
Stars in My Pocket Like Grains of Sand by Samuel R. Delaney
Literary fiction/not sf I read as a teen or adult
(there's notably a lot less of this because I do lean heavily towards fantasy but)
Catch-22 by Joseph Heller
Where'd You Go, Bernadette by Maria Semple
Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn
Drive Your Plow Over The Bones Of The Dead by Olga Tokarczuk

my very biased favoirtes (tm)
kingkiller chronicle baby!! ive been obsessed with this series for half my life now and ive written essays on it for fun. it is deeply special to me.
the tortall books esp the song of the lioness was one of the first books i read on my own that my mom hadnt read. these are my ultimate comfort books and influence the fantasy i read after.
graceling realms by kristin cashore (well the first three at least) is a series i can read over and over. i love the magic system and how it's tied to themes. the main characters are complicated and dynamic, the romances are beautiful .. . absolutely amazing.
the gilded wolves by roshani chokshi is a puzzle book, a historical fantasy. there is a big emphasis on found family, addresses racism and colonialism within europe (esp the upper class), and it is all very cleverly constructed.
legendborn by tracy deonn is worth all the hype is is getting and I hope people continue recognizing its awesomeness. the only book in king arthur canon im attached to. its about grief, it's about legacy, it's about institutional racism, its about parents and children. read for a strong emotional journey, complicated characters, and difficult conversations about king arthur and the united states
in other lands by sarah rees brennan which tbh i read back when it was being published online. perfect for those who love snarky protagonists, commentary on the fantasy genre, you gotta try this book!
the poppy war by rf kuang is one of the few trilogies i have finished in the past few year. its absolutely heart-wrenching. starts as a magic school book, then turns into a magic war book. please look up the trigger warnings beforehand. perfect for those who love epic fantasies tied to historical events.
piranesi by susanna clarke is the strangest book I've read. its not like anything else I've read. you should absolutely try it.
strange the dreamer by laini taylor is beautifully written, clever, and full of amazing themes. i love these characters and worlds and it's very lovely and intense.
elatsoe by darcie little badger is a modern day fantasy and i cannot recommend it enough, it's so clever and kind and theres ghost dogs????
little thieves by margaret owen- my new beloved. this book was written for me, even if the author doesnt know it. sequel comes out in only a few days, perfect time to read it!!
Honorable mentions:
sunshine by robin mckinley- i love robin mckinley's books although this is not my favorite, its a fantastic take on vampires
the bone witch by rin chupeco- amazing world building and beautiful writing, im way overdue to finish the series
nettle and bone by t. kingfisher- a dark, creepy fairy tale feel that has me wanting more from the author
an ember in the ashes by sabaa tahir- another series i absolutely need to finish, has some really interesting morally gray characters.
wayward children by seanan mcguire- these books are so satisfying and i am absolutely the target audience for this series. we love deconstructed portal fantasies
girls made of snow and glass by melissa bashardoust- i will read all fairy tale retellings but this one i bought after because i needed this fantastic version of snow white
the sandsea trilogy by chelsea abdullah- only the first one is out but i am so invested to see where this reimagining of a thousand and one nights goes!
his dark materials by phillip pullman- a classic. your soul is your animal companion. need i say more?
the golem and the jinni by helene wecker- a very recent read but i will be shoving this into peoples hands now. historical fantasy isnt always my jam but when it works, it works.

Propaganda
The Library, Beauty: A Retelling of the Story of Beauty and the Beast by Robin McKinley:
None
The Great Library, Thursday Next chronicles by Jasper Fforde:
The Great Library contains every book ever written, both as literal texts and as worlds with living characters who act out and protect their stories! It's about the metafiction! It's about narrative shape and autonomy! It's about metaphors that are alive and ready to fight back! Also the Cheshire Cat is there and Miss Havisham does illegal drag racing.
The Library Starship Alexandria, Krøniken om stjerneskipet Alexandria by Jon Bing:
The library ship Alexandria flies between the stars in the 1970s Norwegian children's book series, in a universe colonised by humanity - but travel between planets takes years, and communication is at the speed of the fastest ship. Alexandria and her sister library ships travel from world to world, bringing the totality of their stored databanks of knowledge to each world, free to use for a time, free to copy and keep - and when she inevitably leaves, her librarian staff settling into cryosleep once more, it is with yet another world's knowledge added to pay forward. Vote for Alexandria, not just because "giant library starship" is cool, but because her mission - to gather, preserve and share the totality of human knowledge - however unrealistic a goal - is at the very core of what libraries are and aspire to be.
Athenaeum, Nevernight Chronicle by Jay Kristoff:
All the books that never were! And bookworms!
Grimm Collection – New York Circulating Repository, The Grimm Legacy by Polly Shulman:
it's a library where you can check out fairy tale objects. there's also collections for science fiction objects and horror novel stuff. and it goes in depth to like what pages do and how the call numbers work which is pretty fun for a book about libraries to do
Bag End library, The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings by JRR Tolkien:
Not the largest collection, but in possession of THE primary sources regarding the Fellowship of the Ring and the adventure to the Lonely Mountain, as well as several other historical texts and translations that may otherwise have been lost to time without the care and keeping of Bilbo, Frodo, and Sam.

Muddy Waters: Pioneer of the Blues
Muddy Waters, born McKinley Morganfield on April 4, 1913, in Mississippi, was a legendary American blues musician who played a pivotal role in shaping the modern blues genre. Known for his powerful vocals and distinctive slide guitar style, Muddy Waters became a trailblazer who transformed the traditional Delta blues into electrifying urban blues.
In the 1940s and 1950s, Muddy Waters' innovative sound and electrifying performances captured the hearts of audiences across the United States. His hits like "Hoochie Coochie Man," "I Just Want to Make Love to You," and "Rollin' Stone" laid the foundation for rock and roll and influenced countless musicians, including iconic bands like The Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin.
Muddy Waters' influence extended beyond his music; he played a crucial role in bridging the gap between traditional blues and contemporary rock, setting the stage for the blues revival of the 1960s. His raw, emotional lyrics and distinctive guitar work resonated deeply with listeners, making him a true symbol of authenticity and soulfulness in music.
Muddy Waters' impact on the blues genre and its evolution earned him numerous accolades and awards, including Grammy Awards and inductions into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. His legacy continues to thrive, as his music remains timeless and continues to inspire generations of musicians and music lovers worldwide. Muddy Waters' contribution to the world of music solidifies his place as one of the greatest and most influential blues artists of all time.

Hello here is my crackpot theory with no evidence 😎👍
Meryl Mei will be the ultimate big bad of the part
She has a lot going on and nobody knows everything about her. She is a principal, business owner, fashion designer, wife, mother, and leader of a small crime family. How. How is she doing this. Is she ok. There is something here and I hope it does get more elaboration.
And then there's Usagi. I do not think he'll be a traitor, but if he is... ohoho.
Meryl Mei hired him, a 17 year old drug addict. Why. Why did she do that. He doesn't have experience, he's not been shown to particularly smart (besides the raft thing which is very interesting), he didn't have relationships with the others besides Jodio kind of, and his stand is useless when he's alone.
What does Mei see in him? Why did she send him on this mission? I hope there is more elaboration eventually.
There's also the fact that she just HAPPENED to hire the gang to steal from the man with the lava rocks. That's a very very very interesting coincidence, is it not?
Anyways I love Meryl Mei and I need her to have a larger role in the story, I hope this was coherent, bye.
Meryl Mei will be the ultimate big bad of the part
It makes the "I wouldn't trust your friends" warning more shocking. Unless the translations were wrong, Rohan was rather vague when he advised Jodio to be careful of his companions. Meryl Mei is a very beloved principal of McKinley High, the main three trust her judgment, and she treats them almost as if they are her own children. She is very similar to Polpo in that both give off the appearance of being a well-respected, admired public person overseeing their underlings, but are very different when the performance drops. Polpo acts like this sophisticated, worldly, and trustworthy Caporegime revealed to be a slob who betrayed Giorno's trust and sees his underlings as mere pawns. Meryl Mei gives this girl-boss vibe of being a crime boss, designer, and principal but we know she is making kids commit crimes for her- even if it means they could be injured or arrested. It could set up the gang to feel betrayed the way Giorno was with Polpo.
As the possible big bad? I don't think so. I don't think she would be a direct main villain. Instead, if we have Meryl Mei involved with the big bad, I think we would have a DIO&Pucci dynamic where someone else is the main villain because they were following a legacy or unaccomplished dream Meryl Mei had. Whether Jodio and his gang killed Meryl Mei or a completely different group kills her, it sets the other main villain up to go against the former.
Meryl Mei hired him, a 17-year-old drug addict. Why. Why did she do that... What does Mei see in him?
I actually made a headcanon about Usagi's backstory that explains why he's a drug addict but is considered a good student prior to his current backstory.
Looking at it now with what we know, there is two scenarios that could explain why he's not a drug addict but he was first seen buying drugs:
He's buying the drugs for his mother. It's possible that Mrs. Aloha'oe is still grieving over her husband's death and became addicted to drugs as a result. Usagi could have been guilted or coerced into buying drugs for her. It would explain how he mentioned the family was living off life insurance but his mom has seemingly tight control over it, which is why he took the job.
He's buying the drugs for himself but he never took them. I'm speculating he's a very sheltered kid, like the one being bullied in Chapter 1, and wanted to rebel or have more friends by deciding to buy drugs to try them out but chickened out. It's all an act and his attempt at finding friends and it led him to join the gang.
Meryl Mei seems to take on kids who are extremely troubled so that she could act as a savior who could convince them to do her bidding. If you think about it, all four characters are very impressionable and vulnerable: Usagi is a drug addict, Paco was abused to the point where he was mutilated while suffering from kleptomania, Dragona is gender non-conforming (they/them, trans, whatever you interpret) and has that used against them, and Jodio is diagnosed with ASPD. I have a whole theory about the psychotherapy test and how that connects to Meryl Mei as well.
There's also the fact that she just HAPPENED to hire the gang to steal from the man with the lava rocks.
I think this was all a coincidence and nothing more to dive into. Pretty much throughout JJBA we've seen how Stand Users are connected and attract one another; we see this especially in the second continuity. However, Meryl Mei could still know that the lava rock exists but not aware of who owns it or plan on getting it while the diamond heist occured.
I love Meryl Mei as well, and I do miss her. I hope she appears more soon!
