like on the one hand, obviously di feisheng wouldn't have been at all surprised when the first (second third however many were sent after him to their deaths) di assassin came for him, because he's im/ex-plicitly doing what he's doing (best at sword/founding the alliance etc) to keep himself safe from di fortress, and you don't do that unless there's, y'know, something to keep yourself safe from.

on the other hand. killing other di fortress kids clearly fucked him up! it was not something he wanted to do or enjoyed doing, it was something he was grimly doing because it was that or die, and also under threat of the mind control bug/ringing bell torture. even when he has amnesia, his nightmares feature him begging to know why they have to kill each other.

literally as soon as he physically can, he goes back to di fortress to free the other orphans, and when he's storming the gates, he very clearly uses nonlethal tactics on everyone between him and master Di. He bowls those kids standing guard over, but they show up at the end at the back of the crowd getting freed like everyone else, not really looking that worse for wear considering the second most powerful man in the jianghu just rolled through them.

so. how fucked up you think he was when he had to fight - and presumably kill - another di fortress orphan, after he'd escaped. after he thought he was free of it, after he thought that he was out?

the later ones, sure, it's awful but at that point it's sort of a numb horror of 'never quite free'; the first one, though, after however long of not having to do that, after maybe even convincing himself that he can just bide his time and get strong enough and no one will ever make him do that again, that between his skill and his (in)famous identity and maybe even the fucking alliance he's formed he's almost safe, that he's as free from the fortress as he can possibly be with the bug still in him....

and then he finds himself locked in combat, again, with another kid who knows the feeling of ringing in his bones and who knows that the only way this fight ends is with one of them dead at master Di's command.

(bonus round: how grimly grateful was he to be able to free the ones sent after him, even if it was through death - he at least could make it fast, make it...clean, ish, for a death in combat.

make it almost kind.

how long has he spent his life with that as the shitty back up/consolation plan - if he can't find a way to deal with the bug in him somehow, the knowledge that at least maybe he can get a few of them out from under the control of the fortress, even if it's just via the edge of his dao)

A) sold (or attempted and failed to sell) their preexisting furniture to invest in their awesome new inflatable furniture business

B) to make room for their inflatable furniture business inventory (would be a literal explanation for the 'no room' comment) or

C) they had actually been renting NOT JUST the couch but the beds and chairs and etc, and panicked upon discovering this was a dumb as fuck move

every now and then i remember the time a few years ago, when sdmi fandom first had its revival thanks to netflix, when a wildly popular sdmi blog run by an anti said the words 'perfectly good Black woman' in reference to why you should ship [man you could easily read as white, whose arc she was fridged for] with her instead of [hatesink character whose race is ambiguous due to being a furry, but has a BLISTERINGLY antiblack narrative under a thin layer of fantasy racism, with a fun side of homophobia and holocaust denial the latter of which is directly invoked in the post], which got hundreds of notes, and i grimace my face through the back of my head all over again lmao

You will probably be able to tell that I'm involved hardly in the horror game (and sometimes other media) scene because a common thread in all the games I've watched videos of are the fact that the protagonist who is oftent he victim of the "monster" is always the little guy like (less than) minimum wage employees or innocent people wrongfully harmned by something The Monster is also entangled in and maybe a victim of as well

Idk there's just something about the protagonist and sometimes even the Monster being victims by the decisions of Higher Ups that put you in such a horrific position and now your pitted against each other. Just another layer of horror that is consistently present

you ever think about how di feisheng absolutely has a moment (several moments) of total fridge horror about how he spent ten years in the jianghu ICU cave in varying states of helpless/weakness

and he absolutely wouldn't have suspected a thing until it was way the fuck too late if saintess had decided to go full torture pool noncon wedding at like. any point in those ten fucking years.

just like. at full power, and knowing that saintess was working against him, she still managed to cripple him and attic wife him (wet edition). and he got out of that because li xiangyi and li xiangyi's disciple and kinda the entire baichuan court showed up to rescue his ass.

but prior to that, any point in that ten years of seclusion, he'd have been at less than 60% of his power, defended by... wuyan? maybe?? who was also presumably doing his own healing, and medicine demon (maybe) who is explicitly Not Good At Fighting.

and no one would be looking for him. no one would be coming to help. if anyone found out he was being held by her, it would be -- at best, it would be what the demon lord deserved.
