Monkey Man and why I loved the heck out of it
Tumblr media
At it's core, it's a Bollywood flick presented to the West with familiar nods to previous action films - I definitely picked up hints of Tony Jaa's influence on Asian action flicks throughout.
It's heavily focused on police corruption, something commented a lot about in India, and here, more importantly, Indian films. Just like America has its love affair with mobster flicks, Bollywood has a long history featuring films that showcase police corruption, sometimes tied into political extremism, fanatical or greedy religious leaders, and Monkey Man comments on all this as well and pays nods to that commonality. We've got televangelists and religious leaders in the states funnelling money, preaching prosperity gospel, and using it to influence politics and fund lavish lifestyles here.
Monkey Man shows this happening in India, and is filled with Indian culture and symbolism through out. The focus on Hanuman, the god and one worshiped by the strong, chaste, wrestlers, champions, and fighters. It's a common thing to have a household deity if you will. Some families might choose to focus worship on Ganesh, others Hanuman, some might do Mata Rani or Lakshmi. Here, it's the divine Vanara (monkey people race) - one of the Chiranjivi - immortals/forever-lived.
Hanuman. Themes of rebirth, common in South Asian history and mythology are present from Kid being a ringer, beat up fighter getting whooped for money to being reborn and facing his trauma through a ritual/meditate process that I don't want to get too much into to not spoil the movie. Post that, he begins his own self alchemy to really become the true Monkey Man. Nods to Ramayama, and an unapologetically Indian story featuring dialogues throughout in Hindi - don't worry, there are subtitles.
And of course a love for action flicks before it, all the way back to Bruce Lee. A beautiful use tbh of an autorickshaw (and you might know them as tuk-tuks in Thailand) which are popular in India with an added kick...I swear, that thing had to be modified with a hayabusa motor. Which is an actual thing people do - modding those dinky rickshaws with motorcycle engines, and considering they weigh nothing at all, they can REALLY FLY once you do that.
Monkey Man brings to the big screen other elements of India people might not know about, such as the gender non conforming and trans community that has a long history in India, presenting them as action stars as they go up against a system of corrupt elites oppressing part of the city, marginalized communities, and minority voices as depicted in the film. I'm not sure if people are going to get all of that without having the context, but I love that it does it without holding anyone's hands.
It's a fun action flick to see in the age of superhero films, and I say that as an obvious superhero/sff nerd. Also loved that Dev included a little bit about Hanuman's own story in the film, and the loss of his powers - almost mirrored by Kid's own loss of self/skills, strength until he confronts his trauma and is reborn, and in fact, remade (not necessarily the same). Also, the use of music was brilliant, including one scene with a tabla (the paired hand drums of south asia) - and Indian music is central to Indian stories.
This is a culture with evidence going back to the Paleolithic with cave murals showing art of Indian dance nearly 30,000 years ago. Yeah, that far back. As well as Mesolithic period art depicting musical instruments such as gongs, lyres, and more.
Indian music is some of the earliest we can find that has high developed beat and rhythm structures such as 5, 7, 9 and now the extremely common and known 4/4 and 3/4 - which so much of Western music is built upon. The foundations and experimentation of/in Jazz. John Coltrane and John Cage were heavily inspired by Indian music and incorporated a lot from it into their works. And Monkey Man blends Eastern and Western music through the narrative as comfortably as it does an Indian story in a very familiar Western accessible structure.
Dev did a wonderful job. And thanks to Jordan Peele for bringing it to screens.

rocky aur rani thoughts
it wasn't at all what i expected actually? like I'm not sure what I expected but it wasn't that
rani chatterjee let me raid your wardrobe
they really just promoted tum kya mile and jhumka because there were like no other really memorable songs--
I sound a bit mean but I had a blast, I laughed a lot, did tear up at least once, and didn't want to pull up 2048 at any time during the film
(spoilers under the cut)
the film had some real 2011 style feminism moments mixed in with more genuine things? the interview at the start made me want to die but there were some almost - ALMOST - coherent points in there
bollywood is not the place to make statements about fat shaming etc etc but there was almost smth valid in seeing any jokes about what whatshername ate clearly coming from ...people were not supposed to like?
rocky and rani were actually quite sweet, despite the ...extraness
i think the film kind of rolled over this as rocky was supposed to be wealthy, but there's a great deal of elitism in the sort of attitude Rani and her family have towards Rocky. It makes me wonder what this film would be if he didn't ... colour coordinate his cars to his clothes and live in a replica whitehouse. like on one hand it's arguably his wealth that makes him able to be the way he is, but on the other hand, the traditional/modern divide that they were showing is typically also a class divide. there's no reason for rockys english to not be good as he is now - and nothing apart from personal taste and "traditionalism" for them to critique, even though rocky isn't actually that traditional in comparison to his family, and even if he was, they - esp at the start - didn't know that
on the other hand I don't know a lot of Bengali people or a lot of Punjabi people so it may just be like a culture shock thing they're going for. idk. i understand it, i just think it's a little bit of a miss for a genuine criticism on their laughing at him
the grandparents element was funny lmao. like what's going on THERE. but it was almost kind of sweet, too, the way they just ...liked spending time together I guess
keh diya na... bas keh diya
^ half the cinema actually echoed this line with her. icons only
the film did pretty often pit men against men and women against women. this worked! when alia or her mom were yelling at men... this worked a little bit less? idk. i think sometimes it ends up feeling a bit mouthpiecey, and some of it was weirdly phrased and ...strongly delivered, to say the least. i understand that they're both from an environment in which they feel safe voicing their opinion, but I was nonetheless going - would someone actually say that? so openly? so maybe that's on me
everything about the alias dad storyline was just chefs kiss
i do think rockys relationship w his mom and sister needed a bit of work for the big fight scene to work. it sounds weird to say since so much of the film was abt the randhawas but ranveers mom's dynamics w everyone were a bit underdone
the guy playing young granddad was so hot. hotter than the real actor actually was back then tbh
all I could think during the ranveer dance routine was how much time did it take him to learn that dbdndndjdjf but that was excellent
idk. i think in some senses the scale of the movie interfered with its effectiveness, but I don't want it to be any smaller in the ayushmann khurana sense, if that...makes sense? idk. it did feel very kjo production, and I like that about it
tum kya mileeeee,,,, tum kya mileeeee,,,, hum na rahe hummmmm,,,, tum kya mileeeeee
ranis "i am speaking" was hot though the whole of that non-confrontation made me want to yell, though maybe because it was happening in public
SPEAKING OF when she crashes her car into his in the middle of a four lane road and then they just fucking stand there and talk and kiss for 10 minutes and all the other cars just go around....lmaoooooooo
still think the more obvious solution was for them both to move out of their family homes but ok

Just watched Rocky-Rani and whatever it goes like.
Seems a bit dripped in elitism when Karan badly wanted to market it as a 'massy' film. 🙄
Apart from missing the unusual antics of Rocky, in one entire song, there was nothing shown that made Rani propose to him in a condescending way. Girl! What makes you love him, despite having Exes who are looking for the cure for cancer...!!??
...and who was supposed to heal the Dadi Maa!! She witnessed her husband slipping away in a hobby and cheating on her. The lady had no choice but to be a rock that she was. Surely could have been progressive and may be not that rock-solid.
Karan made her the villain because she was easy to hate on...all the while she was seeking for a closure and an apology. Cheating is never okay. Being irresponsible to your wife and kid is never okay.

i need to distract myself from the heartache so here are my comfort thoughts:
aisling telling her dads about her love interests when she's still crushing on them but nobody's made a move yet.
aisling making a big dish of apple crumble and everyone crowding round the table to eat it.
henri using a spatula to intercept a thrown dagger before it can strike one of his colleagues.
danny reluctantly losing his absolute shit over the dumbest joke in the world, like he's laughing so hard that he has to go outside and walk around the block a few times to get it together.
aisling punching a karen/kevin in the nose and breaking it after they make rani cry.
aisling hiring new people to work at the diner and making sure they know they're her family just as much as her own kids are.
aisling dating a CEO of some elite company and just casually fucking his shit right up. "my employees are like my family--" "you'd deny your sister paid maternity leave and free childcare?" "you clearly don't run a fortune 500--" "no, i run a small diner in manhattan, so if anyone has an excuse here... i mean, it's probably not the bajillionaire, right?"

Alia Bhatt says first day of Heart of Stone shoot was awkward: “Acting in English suddenly felt a bit strange”
Heart of Stone arrives on Netflix on August 11.
Alia Bhatt, who is basking in the success of Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, will make her Hollywood debut in the Netflix movie Heart Of Stone. She will essay the role of antagonist Keya Dhawan in the action film starring Gal Gadot and Jamie Dornan. The actress recently said that while the process of filmmaking was the same, it was kind of awkward on the first day of the shoot as she has to speak her lines in English instead of Hindi.
Tumblr media
Alia said in a conversation with Toronto Sun, “I have to say on day one, because I’m so used to speaking in Hindi, suddenly on day one speaking in English was weird. Even though I speak in English most of the time, acting in English suddenly felt a bit strange.”
Alia also stated, “But apart from that day one kind of awkwardness, I really really felt that it was the same. The process of a film set world over is exactly the same.”
In Heart of Stone, Rachel Stone (Gal Gadot) appears to be an inexperienced tech, on an elite MI6 unit headed up by lead agent Parker (Jamie Dornan). What her MI6 team doesn't know is that Stone actually works for the Charter — a covert peacekeeping organisation, secret even from other spies, which uses cutting-edge technology to neutralise global threats. Rachel has been trained to be the consummate professional: a phenomenal field agent who sticks to the mission, follows the numbers, and trusts no one. When a routine mission is derailed by mysterious hacker Keya Dhawan (Alia Bhatt), Rachel’s two lives collide. As she races to protect the Charter and strives to beat the odds, her humanity might just be her biggest asset.

lowkey if i were to make a few bingo sheets for the diner squad, is there anyone you'd particularly like to see them for? (there's a list below the cut dw!)
daniel "danny" estrada: (fc: ped.ro pas.cal) the local janitor and mechanic for the diner, he usually spends his time fixing the diner's delivery van, kinda gruff, kinda quiet, but will always be there to help and look out for people (even if he pretends this is a hugely exasperating task, it absolutely isn't) and he's bi!
ramsay gordon: (fc: osc.ar isa.ac) the nightshift cook, loves spicy food or anything that's seasoned with more than basic herbs and salt and pepper, he loves to listen to jazz music but will gladly dance to anything, very happy, tries his best to be nonchalant and casual, but is prone to stressing over perfection in the kitchen (and he's pan!)
henri patel: (fc: dev pat.el) the dayshift cook, won two michelin stars, strives towards transforming everything in his life into something high-class and very elite. he's quick to anger, but also quick to calm down: it's also important to note that he only ever gets angry in the kitchen. when it's just him and one other person, he's quieter, maybe a little stand-offish, but he ultimately appreciates the companionship and will gradually warm up to them. (he's demisexual but panromantic!)
etienne monet: (fc: dani.el kaluu.ya) henri's sous-chef, but now he's very happy to have his own space in the diner kitchen to prepare ingredients and occasionally decorate the desserts; he's always bright and cheerful, an absolute ray of sunshine, but he's also very observant of emotions and is quick to check in with people however he can. (he's pansexual but demiromantic!)
rani singh: (fc: charit.hra chand.ran) a waitress who's also studying how to become a baker; very bright and friendly, but her anxiety poses a challenge at times, and sometimes she can become very absorbed in her work to the point that she inadvertently closes herself off from the world. however, for the most part, she's very sociable and eager to make new connections. (she's bi!)
bella raymond: (fc: an.ya tayl.or-joy) a waitress who comes from a very elite family, and who has also recently become a vampire following a case of wrong place, wronger time. she presents herself as a classic ice queen, but in truth, her recent transformation is something that leads to her being afraid of any level of closeness or intimacy. in the rare cases of friendship (or more) she can reveal herself as being a protective, compassionate, but somewhat blunt character. (she's also bi but there's a little demi-romance there, too)
nate jones: (fc: ja.ke jo.hnson) a barista who happens to be stanley's biological son from a brief, regrettable heterosexual moment in stanley's youth. nate works at the diner as a wise yet often brutally honest barista, and often reflects on his choice to drop out of law school, wondering if he did the right thing. around his friends, he's good fun, supportive, and always eager to help out a friend in need. (bi bi BI!)

Share of Airport advertising in smaller cities of India
Tumblr media
Share of airport advertising in smaller cities of India
The Airport Advertising is fast catching up than the traditional Out of Home (OOH) Advertising. The main focus is the Tier I and II cities. Few observations and thoughts have been penned down below by Managing Director, Atin Promotions & Advertising Private Limited, Atin Gupta – who handles airports and airlines advertising rights.
With the advent of better options, customized offerings and innovations have not only increased awareness but also have become the norm for more and more advertisers to open up to the concept of airport advertising.
Comparatively airport advertising is more popular than airline advertising. The reason being it has been in the market for around 15-16 years whereas airline advertising has recently come into business, around 7-8 years back. But to increase airline advertising, special rate cards and good deals are being offered to the advertisers.
There is an increase in 15% of the budget for airport advertising in the overall category of outdoor advertising.
It’s a challenge to get clients to advertise in the small airports, but those who have seen the effectiveness, opt for airport advertising.
Due to less number of passengers in the smaller airports and limited budgets, there are only standard light boxes or billboards. But with the increase in the number of footfalls, there is a high chance of innovation in the airport advertising.
Talking about revenue, only around 8-10% when compared to the overall revenue comes from small town airports. But the major advertisers in Tier I and II airports are the Public sector, retailers and some major advertisers.
Although digital airport advertising is present in Metro cities airports, yet for smaller airports, instead of spending in digital advertising, brands like to invest in choosing strategic locations which offer them maximum or 100% visibility.
Some of the examples of innovation and experimental airport and airline advertising – an activity was done with Schmitten chocolates inside airline. Some flyers were engaged with selfie opportunity with those chocolates and its impact got accelerated upon posting those photos on social networking sites. It gave positive overwhelming response and hence this activity was extended from one month to six months. At the airports different festivals are celebrated which helps in the brands to participate. Also the huge spaces and different set ups like planters helps in advertising in a great way.
Not too many challenges are faced for airport advertising but the continuous and consistent innovations would help in the increase and overwhelming response for airport advertising in India.
Although Airport advertising is costlier than regular out of home advertising, yet it’s considered to be the most affordable since it reaches out to the target customers – elite, educated and high-end travelers. Hence, airports everywhere are preferred by the brands for this very reason. This form of advertising creates a high impact for both the domestic and international consumers.
