An excellent Esquire profile from 1976 of the comedian Harry Ritz, the sparkplug of the Ritz Brothers comedy team.
The brothers are an acquired taste, perhaps, for today’s audiences. They are tummlers—the guys at Borscht Belt resorts who would do literally anything to get a laugh, with “anything” generally being something loud and disruptive. Tummlers were the roving masters of ceremony, the one-man entertainment committees, the troublemakers who would lead games, songs, dances, while telling jokes and taking pratfalls.
Similarly, the Ritz Brothers, in their film appearances, would usually kick the chaotic energy of a scene up a few notches even as they performed as a well-rehearsed unit, with Harry the leader.
A few examples of Harry Ritz’s work with his brothers:
“He Ain’t Got Rhythm” from On the Avenue
“Here Pussy Pussy” from The Goldwyn Follies

Watching 1939: The Three Musketeers (1939)
In 2011, I announced I was trying to see every film released in 1939. This new series chronicles films released in 1939 as I watch them. As we start out this blog feature, this section may become more concrete as I search for a common thread that runs throughout each film of the year. Right now, that’s difficult.
