An excellent Esquire profile from 1976 of the comedian Harry Ritz, the sparkplug of the Ritz Brothers comedy team.
The brothers are an acquired taste, perhaps, for today’s audiences. They are tummlers—the guys at Borscht Belt resorts who would do literally anything to get a laugh, with “anything” generally being something loud and disruptive. Tummlers were the roving masters of ceremony, the one-man entertainment committees, the troublemakers who would lead games, songs, dances, while telling jokes and taking pratfalls.
Similarly, the Ritz Brothers, in their film appearances, would usually kick the chaotic energy of a scene up a few notches even as they performed as a well-rehearsed unit, with Harry the leader.
A few examples of Harry Ritz’s work with his brothers:

“He Ain’t Got Rhythm” from On the Avenue

“Here Pussy Pussy” from The Goldwyn Follies

Elton John and Bernie Taupin, Gershwin Prize Concert, Constitution Hall, Washington, DC, 20 March 2024. Upper photo: Elton John with Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden. Lower photo John with Bernie Taupin leaning on the piano.
Yesterday was an eclectic one for music. In order to make reviewing a pile of income tax documents tolerable, I queued a playlist of recordings that had been lost in the depths of the CD cupboard and only recently copied to the iMac. The list began with some 12th and 13th century Spanish music by the group Alia Música.  That was followed by a recording of Beethoven’s Christus am ölberge, a Haydn symphony, some show tunes by the Tin Pan Alley tummler Leonard Bernstein, and the first of two CDS of Bach’s Johannes-Passion (listening to the second disc as I write this). After an early dinner it was off to Constitution Hall for the Gershwin Prize tribute concert for Elton John and Bernie Taupin. Staged by the Library of Congress annually to honor winners of the Gershwin Prize, the 2024 concert included performances by, among others, Metallica, Annie Lennox, Brandi Carlisle, Garth Brooks, and, amazing as it sounds, Joni Mitchell. The musical day concluded with a performance by the overweight and crippled Elton John who despite health challenges is still a master of the rock piano.

i think there's something profound to be said abt harmony korine's approach to storytelling and direction and i've been thinking about it a lot in regards to lolcow shit. i think in a way gummo, despite coming decades before lolcow culture became internet mainstream, is kind of an anti lolcow movie conceptually.
empathy exists at its core, and though it unflinchingly presents all these weird and gross ppl it shows them having human moments. even tummler, the distinctive bad influence between the boys, solomon says it himself in the opening narration, he has a marvelous persona.
but it's empathy for ppl who lack the ability to turn it outwards, the motif of cats being killed and hunted is all through the film and it reflects that while ppl like tummler and solomon and the sisters and bunny boy and everyone are deserving of sympathy on some level, there are ppl who deal with the crushing pain of a bad lot in life through hurting those even more vulnerable than them
bcuz a stray cat is infinitely more vulnerable even than an impressionable kid, and solomon even tells tummler not to go after the house cats, the cats with privilege, with those who care about them.

If you truly love a movie/show/book etc. Never watch retrospective analysis videos. Gummo is my all time favorite movie I've never watched anything that's impacted me as much as it has. And part of what I love about it is that it is essentially nothing. What you see is what you get. Its only plot and objective is showing you how these poor disadvantaged people live and that's it. There's no hidden message, there's no deeper meaning, there's no hidden metaphors etc. You're literally just a witness to these peoples daily abysmal depressing yet sometimes happy lives. Everything you need to know is laid out clearly. Jared takes care of his vegetable grandma and models for photos dressed like a female prostitute in secret. Tummler has a big ego because in reality he's miserable and resents his dad. They show you this and there's no guessing. You don't have to think and you don't have to read between the lines. It literally is just a movie about the reality of poverty and how these people navigate that world on a daily basis. There's absolutely nothing else to it.
If you want crafted symbolism and things with deeper hidden meanings go watch some Lynch. I love Lynch thats not a dig at him - he just makes things that have the potential for analysis and thinking and decoding. And at times even Lynch just puts shit in there for the sake of art. Anyway thanks for coming to my Ted Talk. In summary if you really truly love something do not read the comments. Do not see other people's deep pretentious over analysis. Let that thing mean what you want it to mean and if it has no meaning that's fine.

Cherry Trees in Bloom, Quad, University of Washington, Seattle, 2003.
Quick Movie reviews: This has to be an absolute banner year for UW, at least in terms of publicity. Just saw George Clooney's magnificent Boys in the Boat. Clooney is a great story teller and filmmaker, and he turned the non-fiction book about the UW JV Crew going to Berlin and winning the 1936 Olympic Gold Medal for 8 oar crew with cox into a gripping film even though we know the outcome in advance. Did not hurt that Clooney employed a crew of fine actors. It is sad there is not an Academy Award for ensemble acting. The settings were exceptionally well managed. Having lived close to the Montlake Cut for a number of years, the scenes set there made me nostalgic for the Seattle of my youth even if they were filmed somewhere else. The Crew House was exactly as I remembered it from when I had a friend on the team.
In a comparison, a few days ago I saw the quite awful Maestro, Bradley Cooper's excruciatingly tedious portrayal of the show biz tummler Leonard Bernstein, everybody smoking all the time till they die. I found myself fidgeting when the film still had more than an hour to run.
Sorry for the UW Scene, but I do not have any scanned photos of the lower campus or the crew house.
Now for the Sugar Bowl!

I know it's in vogue to scream at staff about the EnTwitterification of Tummler, but I play a not terribly popular gacha game that's had crossovers with a bunch of gacha games that have sunk. So if you played Wonder Blocks, Grand Sphere or Valkyria Chronicles, the only evidence of those games existence are cross-promo units with those characters that have been fossilized in this game.
Someday, "Why does the desktop layout look like ass?" may be the only evidence of Twitter's passing

His dad never gave a crap. Not even at the end of his game. It was scary to see him despondent like that. His dad didn't care for mom much either, or the little doggy. He started going to church, and he started listening to the gospels. It was expected when he robbed the neighbors. He took their wine, and he took some rings, and fine jewelry. I think he got a fur coat as well. When he had a kid, he didn't think to watch his ways. He thought the same as his daddy.

Sid Raymond: Catskills and Katnip
The long life of Sid Raymond (Raymond Silverstein, 1909-2006) brought old time show biz awfully close to our time. In his early years, Raymond had worked as a tummler in Catskills resort hotels, and toured as a scout for Major Bowes Amateur Hour. Starting in the early ’40s he became a voice-over actor for Paramount Pictures’ Famous Studios, doing the well-known animated characters Baby Huey,…
