Chapter 2: Circle of trust

The members of the Southlands pass a life around. Martyn has thoughts about it.

The story summary:

They say the land was cursed.

Maybe it was true. Maybe it was just a story some bard made up that some people believed and started to spread. Be careful where you tread, or who you trust, for the curse could manifest at any time.

Only few remained of those who had stayed behind - those with truly nothing left to lose, or anything to gain. They were too intrinsically tied to the lands to leave, or too stubborn to accept defeat or to believe it could affect them. These people thus lived under the ever-looming threat of the curse, never knowing when it would strike, cultivating a culture of dread and distrust.

And the curse chooses its next victim without discrimination.

Why I think Martyn and Tango should team up for season 5 of the Life series (if we get a fifth season).

c!Tango hates c!Martyn so bad but Martyn doesn't even know what he did. Or he does know, but just doesn't care.

The player Martyn has the most kills on is Tango with 4. I think he deserves one more. (Man who can't stop killing his allies for fun and enrichment.)

I think pairing the biggest drama kid on the server with a tech kid would be very funny for me personally. In Last Life, Martyn paired himself with 3 tech kids and Jimmy, it's my favourite season. Southlanders my beloveds.

I need another Tango rage so badly and pairing him with Martyn is bound to make that happen.

Tango deserves revenge tbh. He's wronged every season and never gets a cool revenge plot. Something something keep your friends close but your enemies closer.

oh my gosh, okay this isnt my DL thing but i just remembered i had this silly ridiculous idea and had literally told no one.

So like. Last life. Great place for Scarian angst right. I agree. I see it. I too partake in the LL angst. But my silly fluff obsessed self also loves looking at certain things out of context sometimes and so when I was watching all the LL povs my brain went "lmao what if they were in a secret relationship the whole time?"

think the biggest thing i remember is when they meet in the nether in session 2 and theyre doing the pillar down together, and like have half way teamed up for a moment and scar doesnt boogey kill him, doesnt even consider it and then Grian goes "wait were not on a team, why have i teamed up with you all of a sudden?" I think he actually says something similar to that more than once in the season

and also the silly bodyguard bit from Jimmy's pov of session 5 or 6 when theyre all in the wizard hut. "please do not point that [grians loaded crossbow] at my face." "no but I'll be like your bodyguard." *proceeds to point the crossbow at Jimmy who he's meant to be in an alliance with*

he’s knocking on the door and there’s not an ounce of hesitation or fear because he’s seen scar while red, lived with him. and scar lets grian inside before grian is checking on him and making sure that he’s alright and I think grian is late going back to the southlands because scar keeps him at magical mountain for a bit. he steals grian for cuddles, and who is grian to deny the man! (maybe he wants cuddles too, after seeing scar die like that)

The other day you were talking about how you wanted to incorporate Mean Gills at some point so that got me thinking about how the story could progress and have the teams of the other series.

(If you’ve already thought about this or don’t like the idea absolutely no problem, this is your AU and your opinions come first! I just had these thoughts so I thought I’d share)

WARNING LIGHT ANGST BUT I TRY TO MAKE IT ALL BETTER

Before the big battle between our main crew and Dogwarts (which I’m assuming happens?) somehow or other Scott and Jimmy get into an argument (I’m under the assumption also that they are together at this point). Then they do the battle against Ren and Martyn and stuff. Uhhmmmm and then Scar dies somehow. IM SORRY DONT GET MAD AT ME HES MY BELOVED TOO BUT JUST HEAR ME OUT! Scar dies, maybe Grian’s fault because of the warlock pew pew. And Scott is still so upset with Jimmy, he decided he just can’t travel with the party anymore. So *Scott has left your party*

Now it’s just Jimmy and Grian, couple of Sad BoysTM. But, they end up meeting Mumbo and Impulse (and maybe making nice with Martyn? Idk how that would work so maybe not) and they form the Southlanders!

MEANWHILE there’s a possibility that Rendog also died during that last battle (perhaps at Scars hand like in canon) (that would also explain why Martyn isn’t with Ren anymore). For sea queen reasons, Lizzie resurrects Ren and he like, pledges his allegiance to her (that’s what happened in Last Life right?). And just to prove to his wife that he can totally resurrect people (she was teasing him) Joel also resurrects some guy whose body was conveniently close to Ren’s body. Aha! He resurrects Scar! My bard is back!!!

Then I had some half baked ideas about the Southlanders returning to the Crastle Tavern, in which Impulse is reunited with his old friend Skizzleman, and Skizz introduces his friend Tango (Jimmy is enamored quite quickly). Scar has also returned to the Crastle because Cleo and Bdubs are his only other friends and you can imagine the SHOCK Grian has at seeing his previously thought dead friend/partner/employee/maybe lover just up on stage perfectly fine.

Oh and while this is all happening Scott has been pals with Pearl.

Another idea I had was Etho owns a decently sized sailing ship, but he’s not a huge sailor or anything. Joel is a sailor on some kind of mission and he’s hired a crew, so he needs a boat. Etho supplies said boat. Joel’s crew is like, all the Southlanders (Aha! 🔭🏴‍☠️) and Scar, and probably Bdubs… Que hilarious shenanigans as Joel tries to be the awesome captain and call all the shots and Etho keeps undermining him because it’s technically his boat.

*gasping for breath* I’m sorry I got so carried away. I hope most of this is coherent and that you enjoyed imaging my ideas! Once again DO NOT feel like you have to incorporate ANY of this. This is your AU so you decide what happens! This is just me theorizing what could happen next 😊

When Scar spent days tracking Grian down and helping him escape the cruel grasp of the Watchers, Grian thought his life couldn’t surprise him anymore. Pledging his life to serve Scar was all he could do to thank his King.

Of course, being the personal servant of the King comes with its' own risks - and now Grian could add ‘hostage’ to his list of titles.

Or; someone decides kidnapping King Scar’s beloved servant was a good idea. It really wasn’t.

Rings of Power episode 3 thoughts:

I love the design of Numenor. Not only does it show the influence of the Elves it also has elements we know from Minas Tirith. It's a beautiful combination that, together with the maritime theme (fish scales on the armour for example) gives it a unique yet familiar feel

I'm still wary of Halbrand. There are definitely Aragorn parallels there (I swear he looked eerily like Viggo in one shot) and I want to believe he'll turn out to be a good person, especially after being guided by Galadriel for a while, but something tells me he will be another example of the strength of men failing

The reveal (for the casual viewer) of Elros being Elrond's brother was really well done. I like that they used the tapestry and simply showed us his face next to Elrond's to tell the story

Arondir's parts were breaking my heart. Why did that have to happen to Medhor and Revion? Both their deaths were completely unexpected (which I liked) and Medhor's especially reminded me of Haldir's death in TTT. I really wish we'd gotten to spend more time with them, maybe see them overcome their prejudices against the people of the Southlands

Revion trying to save the tree was so beautifully Elvish, as was the pain in Arondir's eyes when he gave in and cut it down

I see we're keeping LotR's tradition of making the Wargs ugly as fuck alive. Good for RoP and welcome to the family, Chihuahua Warg

The Orcs were great btw. I really dig the skull masks they wear (presumably to shield themselves from the sun). Also I'm pretty sure one of the Orcs was Jed Brophy which is great because I love Jed and I'm glad he keeps blessing us with more Tolkien characters. I can't wait to hear his stories about RoP at MagicCon

Also Adar - holy shit! I love that the Orcs call him that, seeing that they were once Elves. It's a subtle yet heart-breaking nod to their ancestry

Harfoots my beloved. Them remembering those that didn't make it really hit hard for me because today is the three months anniversary of my mum's passing. Seeing Poppy mourning her loved ones while still trying to be strong reminded me a lot of what my family's been through these last few months and for that reason alone this scene will always be special to me

I absolutely adore Nori's family, especially her father. They both seem very Tookish and I like that

I still think the Stranger is one of the Istari. There was a shot of him where I literally gasped because he looked exactly like Christopher Lee's Saruman. The nose was unmistakable. That aside, I really feel for his character. He looks so terribly lost that I keep wishing someone would give him a hug. I'm so happy Nori's family welcomed him into their midst at the end

Long story short - this show continues to be incredible and I can't wait for episode 4 next week.

• somewhat inspired by OFF (old indie game)— grian embarks on a journey to rid the server of evil (maybe the watchers) accompanied by martyn who is just curious on what hes up to. Every level, grian meets a new antagonist, some of which join him (mumbo, other southlanders) while others are too stubborn to switch sides and grian mercillessly gets rid of them. As things go on, it becomes apparent that grian is overtaken by bloodlust, his eyes red. Scar is a merchant who trades lots of wares and information. Once it becomes clear that grian is not the man who started this mission, scar and the entourage has to decide what to do with him. Continue to support his murder spree or…

• radio station au— wait, touch tone telephone (lemon demon song) au where scar and cub are hosts of a call in radio show, and mumbo is a frequent caller that is trying to convince them that hey??? The moon is huge and ive been seeing eyes in the sky but no one believes me??? And they think hes delusional, but like chaos so they follow his instructions to not sleep, and… well, cub certainly starts to act differently. Also grian is mumbo’s friend who he recruited to stay with him during this whole ordeal bc hes so scared and lonely

• fwimmy idea: jimmy decides to take up painting/doodling for relaxing and self reflection, and finds himself being very enchanted by fwip’s goblin-y face structure…

• etho jokingly praying at bdubs church on the emp server, failing to realize that Lore Magic can give anyone any powers as long as others agree. Therefore, bdubs has a clear shot of etho’s thoughts while in the church, and boy does etho have some Thoughts about Bdubs

•scar and mumbo taking swing dance classes. Thats it thats the idea

This is absolutely crazy, probably, but for some reason, reading the trials of Mairon, I get the sense that, when he was in prison, he already knew exactly what was going to happen if Galadriel accepted his offer. As if, with his power or some kind of temporal paradox, he already knew everything that was about to unfold... That they would fall in love, rule the southlands (and middle earth by proxy) and that all that suffering that actually happened would be averted. I think it's because of the way he insisted on being judged by Galadriel. How he kept asking to be called Mairon. How he tried to touch her to see if she was really there (l mean, he acted as if he was in love with her already). And when he called her a Goddess, much like he did in her dream world... Is that a possibility?

Oh and there is something that worries me: if in the end, the trial really proves that Sauron could be redeemed, will Galadriel blame herself for not having accepted to be his queen in the real world? I do not wish this kind of torture for our beloved elf warrior 💔

I can’t speak to all of this because some things will be discussed in the fic later, but what I can say is that he didn’t know exactly what would happen but in my version of events, he was indeed serious on the raft when he said her light by his side would keep him from turning dark and that he wants her to prove him right in the trial.

His insistence on her doing the trial with him is due to him really still wanting her after all those years. I think he believes that there had been a chance for him at that very vital moment in time on the raft and he wants it proven that he has the potential for good and redemption inside him.

Swords Lily is out

In honour of the release of the newest Starryholt chapter Swords Lily (read it here), I wanted to talk about where Starryholt started out, and what plans I had in the first place!

Originally, I pictured Starryholt as like. Winterfell from GoT. The Snow Fort from Last Life. It was supposed to be cold, empty, isolated and a sad affair in general. It was supposed to be a colonizing effort from Dogwarts Edrea and the Crastle Ostal, and the Southlanders were supposed to be the original inhabitants. Or, to be more specific, it was a re-colonizing effort, since the Southlanders recaptured Starryholt and Ethubs were supposed to re-negotiate the rule of Edrea and Ostal. It would’ve ended up with Ethubs basically switching sides and working for the independence of Starryholt.

As you can see, Starryholt is now very much NOT the North, very much a land to be colonized, but an annexed area where the Southlanders around Grian just decided to stir shit up because it’s Grian. He likes to make himself the villain of stories, and I support him wholeheartedly re: him being my main villain in Starryholt.

Also, in the original draft, I was strongly considering to create three stories under the umbrella of Starryholt. It would’ve been The Princes of Starryholt, which is the story we have now, following Etho and Bdubs. But also a separate Treebark story that would’ve taken place at the same time, and the chapter titles would’ve been tree names exclusively. Of course, that was before Martyn’s betrayal was this pronounced. Or, to be more exact, before I decided that I needed to put Redwood into this story At All Cost. Because the third story would’ve been from Grian’s perspective, this one was supposed to feature herb titles. I think The Rebels of Starryholt would’ve been a fun title, but I didn’t get far enough in plotting to decide on a title. It was supposed to be about the Southlanders, their lives in Starryholt. Maybe some corruption, or Grian just snapping, but it would’ve featured Jimmy getting wooed by a fairy prince (Scott), a Mumscarian triangle and Impulse being exasperated at all their shenanigans. Zedaph was supposed to turn up. But Impulse ended up mayor, and Grian turned out to be much more crazyinsane than he was supposed to be in the beginning.

Instead, we now have The Princes of Starryholt, my beloved child of two years labour. And I think it’s way better than my original three-way plan! But I still wonder about the possibilities of What Could Have Been!

And the way he threatened Fwhip and the southlanders didn't push him on it! Do you think Grian would know what happened? Has he gotten a peak under the mask before a game starts? I have been enjoying the new Rings of Power and I really enjoy the new characters and story line. (Nori, Poppy, and Gandalf and the Durin & Disa dwarves are my fav) But is it just me or is there repeating LOTR storylines/cues? It’s been A LONG time since I tried reading the Silmarillion! But like a few are Halbrand (Aragorn), Theo’s scene with the Inn keeper and the hilt (bilbo & Frodo, the ring), The Southland tower arc (helms deep). They even are using LOTR direct dialogue at times. Am I nuts?

No, the allusions to Lord of the Rings are there and I think they probably thought that it is easier to catch old fans with the similarities.

I actually think, it is just about right. It's enough hints at beloved content but still definitely new story lines that you can get attached too.

I absolutely adore Elrond, Durin and Disa, and I think it really adds new angles to the question of how elves and dwarves can be friends - a story that was told with Legolas and Gimli. But it is different enough with Elrond and Durin that you can enjoy it.

Reading the Silmarillion is hard. It's completely different to LotR and actually there is not very much about the 2nd age in the Silmarillion. So, I think the Silmarillion just would help you to understand the nods they make to the 1st age (like the two trees of light in Valinor).

I actually sort of side-eye the similarities of Halbrand and Aragorn. It is my personal theory that the "Adar" figure who seems to be Sauron has an alter ego - a role Sauron wil slip into to gain the trust of the Elven smiths. I mean "Adar" looks like a man you can trust, but I think if they really want to do a rug pull with Sauron being one of the persons we like and trust (like it was in the 2nd age, Celebrimbor and the Elven smiths trusted Sauron), it would be good to have him playing with the good side. And it would certainly give a very good twist to Galadriel's revenge arc, if she herself ends up helping Sauron.

So, you're definitely not nuts for seeing some similarities. My advice would be to just enjoy them as kudos to the LotR movies.
