Rewind the Tape —Episode 7
Art of the episode
Only four days to go until the premiere, and we're finally wrapping up with the last post of our rewatch. Just like we did for the pilot and for episodes two, three, four, five, and six, we took note of the art shown and mentioned in the 7th episode while we rewatched it, and put together our notes for reference. And, now, we're sharing our notes on AO3 too.

Six épigraphes antiques
Claude Debussy, 1914
This suite was originally composed to be played as a duet, but Debussy re-transcribed it as a solo piece the next year.

The Garden of Earthly Delights
Hieronymus Bosch, 1503–1515
Tumblr media
Original sin is the theme of Lestat's Mardi Gras ball. The triptych shows that sin "starts in Paradise or Eden on the left panel, with Adam and Eve, and is punished in Hell in the right panel. The centre panel depicts a Paradise that deceives the senses, a false Paradise given over to the sin of lust. This deception is encouraged by the fact that the centre panel is shown as a continuation of Eden through the use of a single, continuous landscape." [From Museo del Prado.]

Let them eat [King] cake!
A historical reference this time: this is the traditional translation of the French phrase "Qu'ils mangent de la brioche," conventionally attributed to Marie Antoinette. The quote can be traced back to Jean-Jacques Rousseau's Confessions, published in 1765, 24 years prior to the French Revolution, when Antoinette was nine years old; and was only attributed to her decades after her death.

Autumn at Arkville (again!)
We first saw this painting by Alexander H. Wyant in episode 2, in the du Lac family home! It was there during the funeral too but now, almost a decade after Grace left New Orleans, we see it in Rue Royale. We wonder: was this simple prop recycling, or should we ask ourselves how and why Louis came to have that keepsake from his family?
Tumblr media
After the Bath: Woman Drying her Neck
Edgar Degas, 1898
This is the third Degas in Rue Royale! It's part of a series of studies of women drying after bathing, which includes charcoal sketches, and we suspect that the unidentified drawing from the hallway might be one of them. [Identified by @nicodelenfent, here.]
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Piano Sonata No. 14 in C-sharp minor
Ludwig van Beethoven, 1801
The closing song of the season is a classic, better known as the Moonlight Sonata, but the first edition of the score was headed by the title Quasi una fantasia or "almost a fantasy" (a fantasia is a musical composition with roots in improvisation).
The Graduate
Dir. Mike Nichols, 1967
Not exactly a reference, but Jacob Anderson shared in interview with Collider that Rolin directed them to play that scene thinking of the final moments of this movie. Have you taken the chance to watch it during the hiatus?
If you spot or put a name to any other references, let us know if you'd like us to add them with credit to the post! And we rounded up all the unidentified pieces in this post, in case you want to take a look and see if anything feels familiar!
We're super close to the second season, and we can't wait! Of course, we'll keep watching with an eye out for interesting references, and it's always easier to find them if we're working together. So, if you spot any interesting art pieces and other references in the second season, make sure to share with the class in the tag #vampterview, and @ us or use the tag #art of the episode if you'd like us to reblog your post into our dedicated tag for these references.
And don't forget to get your very own bingo card for the upcoming predictions bingo, here!

truly underrated moment in that ep was Claudia straight up biting Louis to snap him out of it after he fell right back into love with Lestat in 0.2 seconds after dancing and making out with him. Like, the boy was so lovesick he totally forgot they were about 5 minutes away from committing his murder.

And, do you know, my heart swelled and ached so during the Liebestod that I thought I must truly love him. Yes. I did. On his arm, all eyes were upon me. The whispering crowd in the foyer parted like the Red Sea to let us through. My skin crisped at his touch.

All Dressed Up for Assassination
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
My favorite looks from episode seven are these two looks worn by Louis and Claudia as they were negotiating the Mardi Gras Ball. The energy they exuded throughout this scene was just immaculate. It was lovely to see Claudia step dressed up as the woman that she is and have this conversation where most times women were not expected to be in "men's business". She looked beautiful in her plaid suit and up-do, standing on business as she always has. I also adored the way Louis sat back like a mob wife knowing what was to come later and just waiting for the ball to drop. The brown, wool short coat draped over this bluish-grey suit and topped with the red polka dot tie is definitely one for the books. I love that even in his last days of being in New Orleans, Louis was still dressed to the 9's.

I cannot stop thinking about how scared Lestat looked when he realised he had been poisoned, how he fell to his knees, looking absolutely terrified, knowing full well what will happen to him now. But the second Louis embraces him, tenderly cradles him against his chest, he calms. Despite the blade being raised to his throat, the weakness in his body from the poison and the knowledge that Louis is going to kill him, he is calm because he will die at Louis’ hands, held so tenderly in his arms, in the arms of the man he loves. I am not alright.

Rewind the tape —Episode 7 highlights
One of our favorite outfits is...
…the suit that Claudia wears to their meeting with Anderson. This is the first —and so far only— time we see Claudia wear a suit. Combined with her hair, which she started to wear pulled up in episode six, and her grown woman’s purse, this is the closest she gets to shedding the facade of youth while in public —but, of course, Tom’s “little girl” reminds us that she can never fully access womanhood.  But she’s trying, and the suit symbolizes her new position in the family structure, the attempt to make herself into an equal: at the start of episode five she was still the daughter left home while her parents went to meet Anderson, now she not only attends the negotiations, but is an active participant, handing Tom the list that ends up defining his decision. The palettes of their outfits seem heavily symbolic too: Claudia, in beige, brown and red, stands apart from Louis and Lestat’s blue suits, but Louis keeps “a little shelf” for her, a touch of red in his tie that matches her crimson shirt.

What's a favorite look of yours? Claudia's high-waist pants and cape from the New Year party? One of their Mardi Gras outfits? Armand's unsubtly vampiric coat?

Ignorance is...Death
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
My favorite scene and quote for episode seven stem from the end of the feast. It was so satisfying to see the "king" be taken out by the queen and the rook. I will admit, I was a bit afraid he would foil the plan, but my gut told me he was not that smart. The feeling I got when he began gagging and Claudia mocked him was one I cannot describe. Watching this man crumble in every iteration will always make me happy.
"You should've let that train go, Uncle Les."
Exactly! Lestat was so concerned with trying to keep the both of them within his reach, he didn't realize it would drive them to this point. He even tried to bring in reinforcements to make sure they never left and thinking that would do something. Now look, the both of you are gone.
