𝐰𝐡𝐨 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐧? 𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦 𝐢𝐧 𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐞𝐫. “i only have one daughter, young mi.”

𝐝𝐢𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐲 𝐛𝐚𝐛𝐲 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐨𝐫 𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐬? 𝐢𝐟 𝐲𝐞𝐬, 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐝𝐢𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐝𝐨? “me and my former husband went to violet springs and we held our baby shower/gender reveal with my family in the uk.”

𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐛𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐟𝐚𝐯𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐦𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡 𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝? “the way she laughed whenever i tried to get something for even cheaper on local markets on our family holidays.”

𝐛𝐞 𝐡𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐭, 𝐝𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐤 𝐲𝐨𝐮’𝐯𝐞 𝐡𝐚𝐝 𝐚𝐧𝐲 𝐟𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭? “yes. especially during the first few months after my pregnancy.”

𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐝𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐤 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐝𝐨 𝐰𝐞𝐥𝐥 𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭? “that i trust my daughter enough to let her explore life on her own now that’s she an adult. i do get protective at times, but she never has done anything to break that trust.”

𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐦𝐮𝐜𝐡 𝐢𝐧𝐯𝐨𝐥𝐯𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐝𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝’𝐬 𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞? “a lot. young mi goes to st judes and lives my parents.”

𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭, 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐲𝐨𝐮’𝐫𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠? “i think like many parents, there are so many things that we’re still learning about.”

𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭’𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐮𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐦𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐬𝐨 𝐟𝐚𝐫? “young mi is so curious about life and adventurous. there was a moment where we went on a vacation with just the two of us after my divorce and she was so talkactive with the tour guide. the tour guide came up to me and asked if she was really 4 years old and not some 50 year old soul trapped in a child’s body.”

𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐝𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐟𝐞𝐞𝐥 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭? “during her trainee days.”

𝙹𝚄𝚂𝚃 𝙵𝙾𝚁 𝙵𝚄𝙽, 𝚆𝙷𝙸𝙲𝙷 𝙲𝙷𝙸𝙻𝙳… if you have just one child, you can just say if they’d do the stuff or not.

𝐰𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐡 𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐞? “young mi can be very sensible. she even taught me how to be more sensible.”

𝐰𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐡 𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭? “there are moments where i think she doesn’t need anyone because she grew up so fast, it’s insane.”

𝐰𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐡 𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝 𝐝𝐢𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐚𝐥𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐬𝐮𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐛𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐚𝐦𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐝𝐚𝐲? “young mi knew from a pretty early age that she wanted to be a k-pop idol like her father, so i always hoped that she’d be able to realise and achieve her dreams.”

𝐰𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐡 𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝? “she was an easy child.”

𝐰𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐡 𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐝/𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭? “the only period where i was stressed was when she moved to the united kingdom. the thought of not being there within a second was not very pleasant.”

𝐰𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐡 𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐭𝐢𝐝𝐢𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐫𝐨𝐨𝐦? “she says she has, but she can be a bit messy.”

𝐰𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐡 𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝 𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠? “this isn’t annoying, but whenever i try to be strict, she knows her ways to get herself out of trouble and it works.”

𝐝𝐢𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐚 𝐬𝐚𝐲 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐚𝐜𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐦𝐲(𝐬) 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝(𝐫𝐞𝐧) 𝐩𝐢𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐝? “we definitely discussed her options but in the end, it should be her decision since it’s about her career.”

Let me start by apologizing for the ridiculous lengths I took this anonymous thing to but I wouldn’t have been able to send this to you otherwise. My shyness is… bad. But I also thought a submission might be better - less copying and pasting for you and you can do all sorts of editing.

So, I was wondering if Marvel’s Elektra and Orestez Natchios have come up here before? A cursory search says they haven’t, only Greek mythology’s Electra and Orestes. (The different spellings are correct as far as I know.) Elektra has featured in many Marvel comic books and has two live-action portrayals I know of - by Jennifer Garner in the early 2000s movies “Daredevil” and “Elektra” and by Elodie Yung in the Netflix Marvel shows “Daredevil” and “The Defenders”. I should say that I haven’t read any comic books myself. The 2005 “Elektra” turned me onto the character, I’ve watched both the movie and the show “Daredevil”, but not “The Defenders”. So the things I can reference are limited but I’ve also done some research with the help of Wikipedia, the Marvel wikia, comic book panels I’ve collected etc, so I’ll make it work.

There’s nothing canon about Elektra and Orestez, as far as I know, and what amounts to little interaction most likely. But that’s never stopped most of us before, has it?

So, Elektra and Orestez’s parents were a Greek diplomat, Hugo Kostas Natchios, and his wife, Christina. According to Wikipedia, there are two contradictory accounts of the Natchios’ family history. In both, however, Christina Natchios is assassinated while pregnant with Elektra, to whom she gives premature birth just before she dies. In what I imagine to be the prevalent account, in the “Elektra: Root of Evil” series, Christina is a very promiscuous wife who sleeps with a lot of men and brings shame to her husband, and her son Orestez resents her for it, so he hires assassins to kill her and the baby he doesn’t think could possibly be his father’s. However, his father is also injured in the attempt and they also eventually learn Elektra was Hugo’s biological daughter, so Orestez’s biological sister, as well. In light of all that, Orestez feels such shame that he exiles himself.

Nine years later, Orestez saves a young Elektra from sexual, I assume, assault by a group of men and returns her to their father, advising him to teach Elektra how to protect herself. The next day, Hugo brings a sensei to teach Elektra.

OK, so the Orestez in the Marvel wikia entry is not who I had in mind… He’s a novelist? And looks middle-aged? Obviously, given their family history, Orestez is a lot older than Elektra, but middle-aged novelist is not what I’m here for. The picture they have of him looks like it might be from the relatively recent “Thunderbolts” series, so I can just ignore it. The Orestez in that vague Marvel sort of wiki entry, who is a martial artist, is the one I knew from my first research into Elektra.

I know I’ve just dropped a bunch of comic book facts on you without ever really talking about the relationship I see between Elektra and Orestez, but I don’t have a lot to say, if I’m been honest. I just really love Elektra and I loved that she had a brother like Orestez (the only version that counts), a master martial artist much like her, and he reappeared briefly in her life just to save her and is essentially who’s responsible for her training in martial arts, and of course there’s the complicated family history, what Orestez did to their mother and attempted to do to Elektra herself, even though he wouldn’t have done it if he’d known Elektra was his biological sister… I just wish there was so much more of him in all the stories that have been told about her. They have so much potential. And of course, he didn’t feature much in the comic books, so there was no hope really for him in any live-action adaptations. In the 2003 “Daredevil”, we only see Elektra’s father and there’s no mention of other family members. Then in the 2005 “Elektra”, there’s one mention of Elektra’s parents that’s not even really that. Love interest comments on her name, “Elektra. Like the tragedy. Your parents must have had a sense of humor.” To which she responds, “Not really.” Like, what an opening. But unsurprisingly, we got zilch. (I’ll be frank and say that it wouldn’t have made sense for her to say anything further, but I’m still bitter.) Then in Netflix’s “Daredevil”… she’s adopted unless that’s changed in “The Defenders”? It’s not even worth touching.

So, this was it. Long and boring and a good reason to consider asking for payment for all these therapy sessions, where we vent and you treat us so nicely. How are you so nice??? You’re absolutely right, we have gone on less before. This blog has never been about evidence, it’s just about what we like. 

I had no idea that Elektra had a brother in the comics. His is a very intriguing story - assassinating his mother because she is shaming their family and isn’t loyal to their father, but then exiling himself when he learns that her baby was from within the marriage, and then looking after his little sister from a distance. There’s a lot of potential there and quite a lot to pick apart about Orestez’s character. 

Can you imagine how it must feel for her to know that she has a brother out there who cares for her, but also he’s responsible for their mother’s death?

I had heard of Elektra as a companion of Daredevil’s - I knew about the Jennifer Garner movie and saw gifs of her from Daredevil here on tumblr but Defenders is the only thing I’ve really seen her in. It’s a shame these screen adaptions didn’t explore her family more, especially with a wild backstory like that, but as you said, it’s unsurprising.
