Plant of the Day
Monday 5 August 2024
In this herbaceous border the late summer display was provided by the orange flowers of the tuberous rooted Alstroemeria sp. (Peruvian lily) and these contrasted with the blue blooms of the cormous perennial Triteleia laxa (brodiaea, grassnut, Ithuriel's spear, triplet lily).

Triteleia laxa
Triteleia is a genus of bulbs closely related to Brodiaea, and both of these are common in California. Their family placement has been shifted, since they used to be put in the family Themidaceae, but now they are considered to be a part of the Asparagus Family, in the subfamily Brodiaeoideae (note the 5 vowels in a row!). As is typical of bulbs in California, Triteleia laxa goes dormant during the hot dry summers.

oh yeah in other plant news, yesterday I got to dig up a dozen or so Calochortus monophyllus(monophylluses?) corms from my friend's yard cause he was going to let the goats have at 'em. They're a little stunted from the shit soil but I'm so happy. I hope they all survive the transplant <3<3<3

Henderson's triteleia
Location: Wolf Creek Falls, Umpqua National Forest, Oregon
Notes: This find and this picture are not mine, but my sweetheart's. He sent the pic to me before I had a doctor's appointment, so of course I tried to figure out what they were while I was waiting.
It took me a while to ID, but this is Triteleia hendersonii, or Henderson's triteleia, a native Oregonian wildflower. It's part of the Asparagaceae family, along with asparagus.
It was once thought (prior to genetic sequencing) that lilies and asparagus were part of the same family, together with onions and garlic. All of these families include species that have six-petaled flowers, with long, white, pointed petals and six stamen, so it's understandable that they would have been classified together.

FFXIV WRITE 2023 Prompt 4: Off the Hook
(Character: Triteleia, Myste, Timeframe: Post Endwalker)
Commander Swift sighed as he headed to the holding cells. He laid the simple paperwork to the desk and was admitted to the back. Passing a few simple bandits and cutthroats, he found his charge. A simple Hyuran man, dressed in white robes with silver filigree. The man had his eyes covered with his hand, blinding himself to the world. “Myste was it?” the Commander asked. “I’m here to let you go.”
The man smiled, and walked towards the bars as Commander Swift unlocked them, passing through with the exact timing that Swift had them opened. He held a hand out to the Immortal Flames commander, “Would you be so kind as to give me my mask and staff back, good Commander?”
“Once we get outside I can.” Swift sighed again, leading the man out into the sunlight of Ul’dah’s streets. “Myste, this is–”
“It can wait until my personage is complete, Commander.” Myste calmly interrupted. “I wish to be able to be whole as you tell me what I did wrong.”
Swift went to the confiscated items, fished out Myste’s mask and staff, and with concern handed Myste his mask. As the other man gently put the mask over his hollow eyes, Swift picked up his speech again. “Myste, this is the fifth time you have been arrested for small petty crimes. Simple things that I know you don’t fully grasp as of yet, but if you just listened to me you would not be back here… again.” Swift sighed once more, shaking his head. “If I had my way, you would be released the moment a Stone Torch or Brass Blade brings you in. Not having to wait in one of those cells for Twelve know how long.”
“I do not mind the cells, Commander.” Myste smiled broadly at Swift. “For I know that eventually, either you or another Immortal Flame officer will come to release me.”
Swift put his hand to his forehead and shook his head. “That’s not the point Myste. We let you off the hook because we know you are harmless. An odd duck, yes. But overall harmless. The Monetarists don’t see your… cures… as a good thing. Even if they only work some of the time. That’s why you are being brought in, time and time again my good sir!” Swift cannot help but raise his voice slightly at the bemused man before him. “They want you locked away for good! I’m sure they’ve tried assassinating you! I’m sure–”
“They have sent people, yes. But my belief has kept me alive and well, Commander.” Myste continued to smile that infuriating smile. One not born of smugness or superiority… One somehow born of pure, honest faith.
Swift sighed once more. “Then get going Myste. If I can’t convince you to lessen what you are doing… Then go be yourself.”
“That’s all I ever could be Commander.” Myste bowed and gently took his staff back from Swift. As the strange man left, he turned with his small smile and said, “If it would make you feel better, Commander, I could take leave for another city-state for a time. I will be back, one day, but there are others in need of succor. Ul’dah most of all. But if it would ease your mind, I could travel farther than the brush of Thanalan and into newer grounds.”
Swift nodded. “That should help, Myste.” The masked man’s smile broadened and with a small wave, he left. Swift shook his head at the departing man. “Such an odd fellow, that one.”

If there's anyone out there that cares about flower language and symbolism like I do, I made an informal write-up some time ago about the in-game flowers (that you can put in your house) and the different symbolism that they can mean.
I only included the symbolism for the in-game colors and also their general meaning.
Also as a disclaimer these could be incorrect, have contrasting meanings, or have different meanings in different real-world cultures. White chrysanthemums (kiku) are usually a funeral flower in Japan for instance. (My Japanese professor once said they were a faux pas for her to receive in a bouquet!) So your mileage may vary!
Now with added sunflower.
This was simply a fun personal project I made for myself that I thought other people might enjoy as well! So here's a question to answer in the tags:
What flowers would your WoL have in their residence?
Arums (calla lily) 🔷magnificent beauty, feminine modesty
Brightlilies (easter lily) 🔷purity, refined beauty 🔷White: virginity, purity, majesty 🔷Pink: wealth and prosperity 🔷Red: warmth, desire 🔷Yellow: gaiety, falsehood, "I’m walking on air" 🔷Orange: hatred
Campanulas (bellflower) 🔷humility, constancy
Chrysanthemum   🔷cheerfulness, "You’re a wonderful friend" 🔷Red: I love you 🔷White: truth 🔷Yellow: slighted love
Cosmos 🔷harmony, peace, modesty, "the joys that love and life can bring", beautiful
Dahlias 🔷dignity, elegance
Daisies 🔷innocence, beauty
Lilies of the Valley 🔷return of happiness, sweetness, humility, purity
Oldrose 🔷Red: I love you, love, beauty, passion, romance 🔷Blue: mystery, attaining the impossible, love at first sight 🔷White: innocence and purity, "I am worthy of you", reverence 🔷Yellow: decrease of love, jealousy, friendship
Shroud Cherries (cherry blossom) 🔷spiritual beauty, a good education
Tulips 🔷perfect lover, fame 🔷Red: declaration of love, true love, eternal love, romantic love, "believe me" 🔷Yellow: hopeless love, unrequited love, brightness, sunshine 🔷White: ask for forgiveness, purity 🔷Purple: royalty
Hyacinths 🔷sports, games, rashness 🔷Purple: I am sorry, sorrow, "please forgive me" 🔷Red: play 🔷White: loveliness, "I’ll pray for you" 🔷Blue: constancy, sincerity 🔷Yellow: jealousy
Hydrangeas 🔷heartlessness, boastfulness, "You are cold"
Morning Glories 🔷love in vain, affection
Violas (violets) 🔷modesty, faithfulness 🔷Purple: daydreaming, "You occupy my thoughts" 🔷Blue: watchfulness, love 🔷White: candor, innocence 🔷Yellow: rural happiness
Byregotia (begonia?) 🔷Beware
Carnation 🔷fascination, love, distinction 🔷Red: "My heart aches for you", deep love, admiration 🔷White: sweet and lovely, innocence, pure love 🔷Yellow: "You have disappointed me", rejection, disdain 🔷Purple: capriciousness, changeable
Moth Orchid 🔷love, beauty, refinement, beautiful lady
Sweet Pea 🔷departure, good-bye, delicate pleasure, tender memory, blissful pleasure
Triteleia 🔷 They're a North American wildflower also called 'triplet lilies' or 'Ithuriel's spear' which is a reference to John Milton's epic English poem, Paradise Lost. It's about an angel sent by Gabriel to find Satan in the Garden of Eden. Satan, in the form of a toad, is introducing evil suggestions into the ear of Eve when Ithuriel pokes him with a spear. Satan then returns to his true form, "... for no falsehood can endure Touch of Celestial temper, but returns Of force to its own likeness."
So, I can't find any symbolism for this one. Would make a possibly good Halone/Ishgard reference if you wanted to read into it, though.
Sunflower 🔷 Haughtiness, respect, passionate love, adoration, radiance.

Triteleia laxa
This bulb is native to northern California, occurring along the Coast Ranges and farther inland around the Central Valley. Its funnel-shaped blue flowers are not large, but they are very elegant with their dark stripes running down the middle of each petal. The genus Triteleia is close to Brodiaea, and both are currently placed in the family Asparagaceae.

Had a nice walk today :) the Calochortus superbus was a surprise to me! I've never seen it grow in this area before, the heavy rains this year must've brought out a dormant population.
