Thoughts on the new announcements on absolute comics

Thought I'd save this for SDCC since there are still some rumored books that are yet to be confirmed, but I can save my thoughts for when those are officially announced. Short version is that this is extremely exciting.

Dawn of DC was DC playing it safe, and they botched the initiative because of how they spammed low quality events like Knight Terrors. Now they're stepping up to the plate and trying to tap into the energy created by Marvel's Ultimate Universe and the Energon Universe. They're trying to take a big swing and hit a home run. After multiple attempts by Didio to create something like this, it's downright ironic that Snyder finally is the one to do it given the two of them clashed at the end of their tenures. Once again Snyder seems to be trying to infuse the DCU with the essence of Metal, and at least this version appears to revolve less around Batman. I won't lie, hearing Snyder name drop Doomsday Clock and talk about "Darkseid Energy" in the promo video made me cringe.

The success of Hickman's Ultimate Universe and the Energon Universe came because they broke free of the usual shared universe comic nonsense. The Maker is an evil Reed Richards who eliminated all the heroes who couldn't be turned in order to build his perfect world. Energon was a reboot with no prior knowledge required. Simple! If the Absolute Universe requires me to know about the "Metaverse", throw it the trash because it's doomed. If the first issues of these books are not able to be read standalone with zero prior knowledge required, it's going to fail. The All-In one shot should tell us why this universe exists, what the pitch is, but it needs to be free from the kind of esoteric meta commentary which has poisoned DC for the last decade or so. Darkseid meddles with an Earth in order to understand his foes better is an easy concept to grasp. Don't make it any more complicated than that.

Absolute Batman by Scott Snyder & Nick Dragotta - Least exciting of the bunch. Unless Snyder is going to radically change up his writing style, we know how his Bruce sounds. Even without the wealth Batman usually has, I expect this will feel very familiar. Since I've dropped all the other Bat books however, I plan on getting this and two others for my Bat fix. Snyder has teased that Scarecrow and Bane are the two Bat villains he wished he could've done more with during his first run. Scarecrow is my favorite Batman villain and the thugs in the ashcan look like thugs of his to me. I think this Batman will be juicing himself with Venom, explains why he's huge, which is a much better justification for why Bane seeks this Batman out than anything they've come up with elsewhere. That logo sucks but I assume it's because this Batman has to make use with whatever he can scavenge, maybe that is a literal bulletproof plate to guard his chest which he shaped to look like a Bat as best as he could.

Absolute Wonder Woman by Kelly Thompson & Hayden Sherman - Thompson was a fan of the Azz/Chiang New 52 Wondy up until the reveal about the Amazons being rapists. Between the reuse of the silver/red color combo for this Wondy's armor, and how she doesn't have access to Paradise Island or other Amazons, I'm getting very similar vibes. I was a fan of Azz's run even though I acknowledge he "broke" her in several ways, I'm up for a second stab at a Wondy like that with Thompson. Tattoos show Hecate's symbol from Historia, perhaps this Wondy got her powers from Hecate only? My theory is Hippolyta went with her Bana sisters to war, and was never Queen of Themyscira. When she had Diana then, it was in Man's World. If this is dark urban fantasy Wondy, that would make for a good contrast with King's current political thriller run.

Absolute Superman by Jason Aaron & Rafa Sandoval - Bizarro arc was great, Sandoval is one of the best artists in DC's roster, I'm all in (hehe). No Fortress is a shame but since Bats and Wondy don't have their bases either I accept it. No family and no home is particularly intriguing. Seen a lot of speculation about what that entails, from this Superman being raised in an orphanage like the Action #1 origin, to Kal being sent from Krypton when he was old enough to remember it. If it's the latter then Absolute Kara will likely be dead, since she would overlap too much with this Superman. I love the design, grey suit with Morrison's first All-Star shield that Quietly only drew for one panel is a peak look. Hairstyle reminds me of Corenswet's "Clark" hair only longer, also reminds me of Anakin/Luke Skywalker which might be exactly the intention. His "cape" appears to be made of solar energy, perhaps this Superman has trouble controlling his powers? His solar battery biology might work differently here, with him "leaking". Or perhaps he even has a different powerset entirely? Seems like he can channel power into his arms/fists, if we get heat/ice fists instead of vision/breath, that would be the kind of silliness I love. Don't think this Superman will be paired with Lois, which frankly is a good thing. All the other major Superman projects focus on the Clois romance, for this to stand out I believe Absolute Superman needs to be dating other people. Since he seems to be a drifter, Aaron might eventually have him travel to other planets, where we could get Maxima or someone entirely new.

Other books have leaked and are probably right considering Bleeding Cool accurately called the Trinity, but I'll wait until they get revealed officially - likely at SDCC - before giving my thoughts.

For the mainline universe:

Justice League - Superman is apparently building a new JL that will be going after Darkseid and reshaping the cosmic hierarchy of the DCU. If DC had any brains left in their collective heads they would give this book to PKJ, but he's denied being on JL. Ram V still has a book to announce, maybe it's him? I would've said Waid but without Mora I don't think he'd take the job. Aaron is a possibility albeit not one I'd want. Seen some people say Lemire, and he did write the JL crossover with his Black Hammer verse. Please let it not be Taylor.

Superman - Mora joining the book took me by surprise, that is sure to have generated major fuming from certain corners. Doomsday arc is going to be a joy to look at

Action Comics - Waid and Henry are finally announced. Action going weekly was unexpected however. Only question I have is, does this mean Waid is staying on past that one arc? Not clear but since he will have more issues that the previous three Superstars I would assume so. Bitter as I am over PKJ getting kicked off before he could tell the Aethyr story he was building up to, Waid bringing in Morrison's Phantom King does make me happy.

Detective Comics - Taylor taking over made me breathe a sigh of relief. For now he remains quarantined to the Batbooks and Elseworlds.

Nightwing - Watters and Soy are going to finally give us the epic run Nightwing deserves. Watters deserves to be a "big writer" and with any luck this will be what elevates him to that level.

Batman & Robin - Damnit PKJ, you really going to make me read a mainline Bat book? Fine but you better continue the Olgrun plotline through this somehow. In all seriousness with Zdarsky and Taylor being on the other books I expect this will be the best mainline Batman book on the stands. Every previous time PKJ has written Batman has been enjoyable, and I trust him of all writers to do something different with Batman. Let this be the book that gets the general DC audience to take notice of how good he's been elsewhere.

Titans - Nah.

Green Arrow - Wish Montos luck, he deserves to be one of DC's A-List artists, but not interested in Green Arrow.

Exciting shake-ups are on the way, going to have to start trimming my pull again. Anything that doesn't wow me is getting dropped because I need the cash for all those Absolute books, which appear to be stacked creatively.

I do use OBS ! If youre not really familiar with it, its totally worth looking up some simple tutorials for. Once you can get a grasp on the program in general, its super modular and fun to mess around with. I think my biggest pieces of advice for streaming are like. 1: IGNORE those numbers queen. It can be super easy to see streamers with anywhere from 29-100 viewers and feel sucks about an average of like. 1-4. but literally anyone who uses twitch- or any platform- has to start there unless you're already situated on a different platform!

These are my average viewers from 2020- its taken me a long time to do anything on twitch, but its been a hell of a lot of fun, and its let me meet some of my best friends in the world because of it! Streaming is a great way to meet people, which brings me to point 2: Absolutely be careful who you meet! I've met a lot of really great people on the site- but as much as small streamers gotta stick together, there's some real stinkers out there who only want to 'network' with you. I won't pretend im BFFs with everyone I interact with on the platform- we're like neighbors <3- but I can confidently say I've never spoken to someone with intentions of clout chasing. The internet's the internet- stay safe out there lmao Ironically this becomes less of a problem the more you stream, you kinda learn to spot it, but back when I was at around 300 followers I absolutely had some incidents where people were playing some real booboo games to try get closer to me. Lots of streamers have promo channels in their respective discords- places you can link your stream when you're going live- just make sure you're an active-ish member of the community if you plan on doing that! Chatters are way more likely to stop by if they recognize you- and its pretty rude to be completely silent in 45 discords unless you're going live- 3: have fun!! Twitch is still just a hobby for me- its admittedly helped me out of a few rougher financial months at random points in the last few years- but im still very far away from making it my full time job in any capacity. Pace yourself- play games with your friends- and have fun! Worrying about growth and money is a pointless endeavor- because twitch will not help you grow! 4: Use Other Platforms: (as well, i mean) There's a lot of youtube videos and tutorials debating the best streaming site- "ahh heres why i left twitch forever vs aahhh heres why im leaving youtube forever" but it boils down to Sites Is Sucks ALWAYS. Forever. If you want to grow on twitch- or any site- make sure you're posting about your streams elsewhere too! Not JUST stream promo posts, but highlights and clips as well! If you can get some sort of editing software, subtitling them expands their reach a TON across the board, though it does take more time to subtitle them. People wont know what youre doing unless you tell them! Now, this does mean you might have to download the dreaded tiktok- I can't speak for the quality of that site in terms of getting people to watch streams; but twitch itself has sent me emails in the past recommending I post clips to tiktok. Plenty of streamers do it- use your best judgement, and what sites you think you can adapt to! Tiktok honestly might be better for getting your clips out there without a preexisting audience- when I first started streaming, I had 6000 followers on tumblr and my promo posts regularly got 1-4 notes- Nothing against those 6000; a promo post is tragically similar to an ad! Of course they wouldnt click it. They dont know how sweet and awesome and silly i am and how my friends mash me with hammers. Theyd want to see that. [The Promo Posts Were Also MID] Some of these things might sound weirdly specific or erratic but its 1 AM and im just recounting some random knowledge ive gained- none of this is a science of course, people might swear the opposite for some of these things. But! Have Fun

I still stand by what I said absolutely though, like especially with Will Wood comparison, specifically like the sort of showtune-like aspects to a lot of the individual tracks on the records, which is probably where the "Tiktok shipping fancam" feeling comes from (see Peas & Love, I feel like that song was carefully designed in a lab to have a bouncy, exciting, decent to well edited video of two characters that hate each other and want each other to die but the fandom desperately needs them to have a moment). It's pretty clear this album wants to be like, somewhat culture critical about the current state of some parts of society, but honestly a lot of the lyrics really fall short of necessarily saying anything particularly interesting about the matter and just come off as pretty juvenile in that regard. Like, Rivers is a Vampire is clearly about high society and excess and sucking out the life from everything and its a great song for sure but its also just like. Yeah you sure did the rich people vampire metaphor again! Which is also another point towards it being very Tiktok consumable. That being said I'm only kind of using "tiktok consumable" as a pejorative here, but it is why I wasn't expecting to enjoy it as much.

Anyway this album has a pretty clear tonal voice here, like the songs do not really dip out of that same, bright, showtune-like quality, so there's not really many moments where the album slows down and takes a break from how hyper it is, which maybe as a full album is not such a good thing, but a lot of these songs individually would be a really great playlist spot.

I'm realizing now that most of this review has sounded like, extremely negative about the whole album, which is funny because so far this is like the most fun I've had listening and catching up with these music asks, I've already listened to the album through like 2 or 3 times and skipped around and re-listened to my fave tracks so. I don't really know what that means for my long term feelings about this album, but as it stands,

I'm feeling a really good 8/10 on this one

if I was pretty drunk and in a great mood I'm sure this album would've hit like 9/10 for me. I'm really into it, I might check out some of Bear Ghost's earlier stuff and see if I'd like it as much.

raymond chandler's the long goodbye.

this book destroyed me. there is some BREATHTAKING racism even for 1953. it's one of the cruelest things ive ever read. it's a sucking chest wound of a book. i'm going to think about it for the rest of my life.

i'm not able to talk about chandler novels objectively.

i am partially grieving the incredibly fucked up shit that happens to marlowe in this book (i have no fucking clue how you even go on after that, but he does) and partially grieving that this is the last full novel and there aren't any more. i know the unfinished poodle springs was finished after chandler's death but! i do not care.

One-Eyed Jacks (1961, dir. Brando). widely available for free, pluto had the nicest copy but ads that weren't blockable. this is a film where the production is as much of a story as the actual film.

i don't actually know if i enjoyed this film or had a good time watching it. i don't know that i ever need to see it more than once.

it is artistically distinct, and i genuinely mean that as a compliment. it is a rare western-that-doesn’t-have-to-be-a-western, and such a weird artifact of a particular guy's career in a particular time.

surprisingly, this is a pretty okay western to watch if you happen to be a woman. katy jurado and pina pellicier are acting their GODDAMN hearts out. despite itself, the movie paints a very good portrait of a mother-daughter relationship and some goodass parenting. women make mistakes and don't die about it. nobody gets raped!!! the absolute lowest bar a western can possibly have. as a quick sidebar, it's not that i think movies should never address rape, it's that westerns always address it in a way that makes my stomach turn.

it is a slow-burning revenge that mostly takes place on a beach, but it also takes you in great uneven hurtling lurches toward its finale. it wants to have things to say about lies, revenge, and storytelling but cannot help but give itself a certain kind of ending. it can only push so far. it is fascinatingly earnest, horny, and earnest about being horny.

grim fandango remastered (2015, originally 1998) by double fine. the EPIC tale of CRIME and CORRUPTION in the LAND OF THE DEAD!!! critically acclaimed, what we would now call Mexican Gothic i think, but billed itself as a Aztec-inspired noir.

technical details: i am not totally impressed by this remaster bc it still looks pretty fucking janky in parts (things clipping through other things, heavily pixelated stuff despite being on the highest quality settings, etc)

why i bounced off: i did not play video games growing up, and have not played many point-and-click games. despite this i do like walking simulators (the modern successor to point-and-click) and visual novels. i think bc i do not have the point-and-click background and am not playing this through nostalgia-tinted glasses for 1998, four years after i was born, the way the design team of this game expect the general population to solve problems and the way i personally solve problems are severely mismatched. i have spent about ten hours playing this game (in four acts) getting to about halfway through the third act, and i would say about half that time has been looking for/at guides or making up lost progress bc i didn't save. this is a tremendously frustrating way to spend free time.

what i did love: however, it does Look. i ADORE this tile and want it in my home. in a cutscene in this little automat there are not one not two not three but FOUR reflective surfaces. they're not real-time, of course, but i did say "what the FUCK" out loud. it's also hysterically fucking funny! many short sharp barks of laughter! i am greatly amused at how a game about skeletons invented permadeath! both the writing and the voice performances are so fucking top notch. i understand why this is a beloved classic and im glad a remastered edition exists in the world, but i do not anticipate finishing this game bc i don't get a lot of joy out of having to closely follow a guide to progress.

how i found this: it was free on GOG several years ago, i wanted to play something this weekend that was compatible with lying down on the couch and used a maximum of one finger for the controls.

A whine left your throat as you flung your head back against the chair of the sofa, dropping your hands and controller into your lap.

The TV flashed with yet another screen that read DEFEAT. This was probably about the eighteenth time today. Suddenly you regret opening your mouth earlier in saying you could easily play any of the games Josuke did.

Josuke on the other hand only looked on at you with an amused expression as he jolted your crossed legs with his outstretched foot.

"You're not that bad. You just need to play at it a bit more." He crooned.

"But I've been 'playing a it bit more' for near an hour! I'm ready to give up and just accept the lost."

A lazy laugh left Josuke's mouth as he watched the pout on your face grow. Maybe he'll bestow mercy on you just this once.

"C'mon. Here, look."

Unexpectedly, Josuke leaned himself over you and so easily his frame over-towered your body. It was even worse when he laid his hands over your hands and controlled the remote whilst it was still in your possession.

As the boy directed your character, you couldn't help the fact that your skin started to heat up and itch with nervous sweats.

Seeing as Josuke was so close to you, you subconsciously held your breath. However, ceasing all breathing didn't help the fact that you were still able to smell the woody cologne that he usually sported. You know Josuke liked expensive and designer items but no thought about price and it's quality came to your head upon smelling it. All you could think about was how nice it smelt on Josuke.

Without fully thinking about it, your face turned to gravitate further into his person as you discreetly tried to take a deeper whiff.

The heat that radiated back onto your face felt so comforting, your nose just about skimming the skin of his neck. You know you were pushing a boundary but it hadn't occurred to you on who until the boy turned his head.

"What're you doing?" Josuke mumbled as he looked down at you with an amused tone.

Instantly, you turned your head towards the TV again in fear that he would find the gesture strange.

"Oh. Soz'." You forced out, your hands slightly shaking.

There was a slight delay in Josuke's reaction. You couldn't watch what his facial expressions read concerning you were too afraid to look at his face but he cleared his throat before saying anything else.

"Nah, you're good." Josuke pulled back into his own space. "I smell nice, huh?"

You hummed in agreement, suddenly shy that you had gotten caught, but you weren't shy for long as the game dinged with a screen saying PASS. You guess Josuke had won the first part but the rest was up to you.

"Thanks, by the way."

You quickly turned in his direction to offer your gratitude for the game, but you didn't miss how Josuke stiffly kept his face centred towards the screen with his hand curled over his mouth, unable to look at you.

Initially you thought it was because he was maybe weirded out by your impulsive actions but you knew that wasn't case when you saw the embarrasing reddening of Josuke's cheeks and pinch of his ears.

Even though he sounded like he was playing it calm, it seems like the situation was affecting him too.

For a moment, the living room was only filled with the sounds of the level you were trying to complete. You hadn't watched or heard a single thing Josuke was explaining to you earlier but it seems by the sheer will power of trying to mask your slight embarrassment, you were doing better than before.

"I'm always cautious I don't go round smelling funky." Josuke suddenly said out loud.

You thought he was going to carry on, say something more, but all he did was aimlessly fiddle with the hem of his top as he watched the gameplay on screen.

So before you even realised it, you were instantly replying.

"You never smell bad."

Josuke turned is head in your direction.

"Eh?"

Shit, you thought. If he didn't think you were weird for smelling his neck then he definitely thought you were weird now.

Scrambling to reply, you tried to formulate the words in your head first.

"I mean, not that I smell you often or anything like that—" Josuke raised his eyebrow at you with an inquisitive look. "—But as far as the record goes, I've never like, been with you and you smelt bad. You always smell good."

Your last words were mumbled, because who were you to even suggest that you perceived or frequently took in account the smell of another person, but to Josuke, it seemed to make all the positive difference.

Turning his body in your direction, the boy grinned at the side of your face.

"Well that's good coz' I'm always cautious how I smell around you specifically."

Now it was your turn to be confused.

"Huh?"

Leaning his hands behind him and looking upwards at the ceiling, Josuke squinted his eyes shut as he made a sound of pre-meditated regret.

"Argh, I dunno. It's gonna sound so weird but I find that I don't mind how I smell around the others as much as I do for when it comes to you."

Your heart rate started to pick up but it had nothing to do with the fact that the game was getting intense. Whilst keeping your eyes on the screen, you lightly dipped your head forwards to the side.

"Expaaaand?"

Fidgeting in his spot, Josuke ran a hand down his face.

"Like, of course, I like to smell nice at all times, but I'm always cautious of how I smell when I know I'm gonna be seeing you? It's not even because I think you'll judge me or anything but... Ah, I dunno."

The game made a countdown beeping noise. Your eyes stayed trained on the screen. The quietness that ensued from Josuke however didn't sound complete. You know it wasn't, because he kept making groans of contemplation.

"Yeah, I dunno." He sighed. "There's just something about you that makes me want to try that tad bit harder or to impress you."

"Oh. Forreal?" You dryly muttered.

Suddenly, the TV laughed with a celebration of success. Once again, the letters PASS decorated the screen. This time however it was accredited to you. Finally, after all this time, you were granted a win in the game, but you couldn't focus on the success due to what the boy next to you had just admitted.

Despite your lacklustre reply, Josuke was still able to laugh at the situation.

"Whadd'you mean, just 'forreal'?"

Placing the controller down, you finally looked in Josuke's direction, but as soon as you saw the amused look on his face, suddenly the cloth of the sofa was a lot more entertaining.

"I mean— okay, that reaction sounds bad but...I hear you. I never knew you felt that way."

"That's fine." He nudged your knee with his foot once again but this time he had an overwhelmingly cheeky smile on his face. "You know now though, right?”

Finally glancing up at the boy, you were met with that same easy face that always seemed to occupy your thoughts when they weren’t supposed to.

Smiling back, you slightly shook your head.

"Yeah, I know now."

I feel like I gotta mention I was a big fan of Mr Beast before and not so much now, but also like. I cannot pretend he doesn't help ppl because he absolutely does. Especially early on when he was simply spending money as fast as he could earn it by straight up giving it away. I found that charming if uninformed bc none of it was sustainable and yet it was genuine and did help ppl in the moment. He also allowed them to choose what they needed. Even now he often asks ppl what they need and provides it, which I think is good. The problem we run into is when his newer vids have such an obvious advertising angle for big companies. Oh you gave thousands of Brand Name Shoes away when many places have dumpsites full of shoes bc they don't actually need those shoes and a lot of them are bad quality, cool ok that sounds great (it does not) 👍🏾

I want to make it clear that I still appreciate he wants to help. Half the time he does very much help. He also informed ppl of the behind the scenes of stuff like what taxes and insurance goes into getting stuff like a new house and car and whatnot.

But philanthropy as a whole is kind of structurally harmful when it's done by rich ppl and companies that lobby against the social safety nets and structures that allow ppl to even afford to own a house. I don't know if MrBeast owns one of those companies, but he certainly collaborates with those types of companies and gives them good press to hide all the anti poor lobbying and other ethical issues

I must also say that according to him in his own interviews, his goal is just growth, which is probably Prime Capitalism and fills me with dread, just trying to one up himself over and over, when actual social welfare is not interested in infinite growth, but in sustainability. I don't know how these two goals will align if he purports to be philanthropic.

I can list down all the reasons MrBeast is Problematic but it will not change the people he helped, who I truly believe benefited from his help. But it will also not change the fact that he's become too big to be a good guy without the many, many caveats of "if you don't count his chocolate partner having a child labour lawsuit" or "if you don't count the many issues with the ghost kitchens his Beast Burgers operate out of" or "if you don't count that the Real Life Squid Game was just a clownishly bad idea that missed the point of the show entirely"

I also want to add that there's something I appreciate about him that I cannot fully agree with, but I can't say is wrong.

When he says he's "apolitical" outside of being LGBTQ+ positive, my first reaction is the usual cringe of people claiming to be apolitical, but then he follows it up with the fact that he believes there's no political boundary to charity and being poor, and quite frankly he's correct. In the USA both Democrat politicians and Republican politicians protect corporate interests, and there's functionally no political divide when it comes to class struggle.

He's directly worked with people who know the needs of those who are struggling. He works directly with people who actively volunteer or work for nonprofits that help poor people.

He may be a bit too centrist for some of y'all but I think he means well and is much more left than right.

I worry that he seems to aim to be a billionaire. I worry that he's further entrenching himself in that sort of crowd.

I liked the guy I used to see in his videos and the more he rubs elbows with crypto shills and billionaires and corporations the less I see of that guy.

I guess this is my long-winded way of saying I don't think Jimmy Donaldson is a bad guy. I just worry that, outside of his recent stand against transphobia, it doesn't seem like he's becoming a better guy than he was years ago. I could be wrong, but idk.

so I was really on track to just stay positive today but i just cannot....

context : I found a tik tok of a clip from Nichomaki's live reacting to enhypen's criminal love. An engene&lune in the comment section said &Team voice would suit the song and a cover would be nice. I saw a lot of supportive comments but then the toxic engenes start flooding in. In summary, they were just practically trying to say that Enha's vocals are better than &Team (aka favoritism)

See as harmless and peaceful as it sounded, it wasn't. And no this isn't me being overdramatic or favoritism from my side. I love all the boys equally truly. But the way they were trying so damn hard to BASH &Team's vocal quality just to make their own group and themselves feel superior is really disgusting. Like we know how brilliant Enha's vocals are, but attacking another group and the fanbase was another level.

I started replying to few nasty comments at one point, the ones that go so far. And this one nasty ass engene shamelessly have the audacity to reply to me and say "Oh yea Enha's B-sides are way better than &Team's overall vocal. Their vocal sucks." - honestly to that person - do you hear yourself right now? You are comparing a 3 year old kpop group to a 1 year old rookie kpop group that just debuted last year. And you have the audacity to compare the quality and amount of tracks and sides they release. Disgusting.

Another thing I wanna point out - It's true each idol will differ on fields they're best at as well as groups which mainly is because of the difference in experience and time. And I think people need to get that in their heads. They all became 'idols' for a reason. Because they can sing and dance better than any local humans out there and can do both without collapsing on stage. These toxic shits don't even know the amount of stress and pain each idol/group goes through yet they're here so damn ready, doing nothing but sitting at home and binging on reality shows, and now you wanna bash and attack small growing groups. Disgraceful.

Apparently the fight stopped after a while between me and the person because I basically just told them I have no time or energy to be in an argument with a deluded person where this would lead absolutely nowhere. And the notifications pretty much went dead. And then that person tagged me - and that one act they did, straight up i just blocked them.

They tagged me in a jungwon edit video and then wrote "jungwon >>>>>>>>> &Team". I'm not here to bash jungwon or Enhypen, i truly love them, they're literally the group i stanned before &Team formed. And the problem wasn't the edit or i'm not butt-hurt about the comment, but it's the fact that even after i left the argument and moved on, they still was raring to go. The fact that we were done with this nonsense crap-talk, and they had the audacity to tag me back and try so hard to trigger me. And ykw, congrats to the person cuz at that point, i just blocked them. I'm not trynna have someone like that bugging my ass on the notification bar, they can go cry in a ditch idc.

Conclusion : Ik i'm coming off really aggressive here - but forgive me cuz i just cannot with toxic engenes. Enhypen and &Team are practically supposed to be like brother groups. They share the same lore, same storyline, even appear in each other's mvs, collabs, the past survival show contestants, the bonds - Everything. Yet its either twitter or tik tok each day, it's not even any other group stans atp, it's literally mostly just engenes. Like it is unbelieveable, how the toxic part of the enha fanbase, literally wants to target and stir discord between the two bonded groups and each other's fanbases.

A lot of engenes are also the ones currently apart of the Lune community including me and i just cannot imagine the shame and embarrassment and absolute disappointment, we must have to feel witnessing all this crap that our same old fanbase is at.

Toxic engenes just need to fucking stop. You guys are so full of yourselves. You guys even have the audacity to call normal engenes CRAZY just because they weren't in your damn toxic train.

I understand favoritism, thats something most people have, I can literally sit here and say Niki was my first love but I favoritize K over him just bc it's my liking. But that doesn't mean I'm going to go attack Niki. You can favoritize someone and love someone without trying to bash and launch at everyone else that isn't THE PERSON. It's crazy how these same toxic engenes have to make &Team and Lune inferior just soo they could feel superior

I was about to make a post searching for a video that I thought I lost in my likes on YouTube from so many years ago before I go to bed, but then I remembered and checked my favorites instead and found it: [Yuki Otake - Tell Me How]

However, another problem. It is quite literally impossible to find this song elsewhere. I'm finding a few videos on YouTube, but the video I linked is the only one with that music video. I love the art, I love the style. I would love to see more of it, but I don't think I could ever find it. It could just be a one-off thing for all I know, and it sucks :(

Also, the song sorta reminds me of "Con Te Partiro (Time to say goodbye)" which is another song I like. It sounds extremely similar, and I'm not complaining. They're both beautiful songs.

I genuinely really love this song and the art in the video. I absolutely had to share it. Sadly, there's no higher quality of the video to see the art better.

SKINAMARINK

I heard about this movie through a YouTube review by Mista GG and watched Kyle Edward Ball's "Heck".

While watching Heck, a 29 minute short film on which Skinamarink draws technique, plot and aesthetic, I struggled to engage.

The aesthetic is incredible. Record static and film grain on top of low-light film of a setting that you can almost recall from childhood is very effective.

The plot is tragic. Both as someone that had a decent childhood, but wears their trauma close to the surface, and as a parent of a toddler, this plot is dread manifested.

The technique is....difficult. To call it pretentious would be disingenuous and to call it a slog is to minimize a very unique film. It challenges you with, seemingly, hundreds of angles of the same house that aim to disorient you while evoking a feeling of familiarity. I can't begin to describe how many times as a child I would get bored and just stare at the room for several minutes, committing the space to memory.

All that being said, this film is incredibly slow. It builds dread to the point of numbness, and in my opinion, I thought it was ineffective.

I was absolutely incorrect.

After the film, I said goodbye to my friend around 10 PM and went straight to bed as I work early. I laid in bed for 15 minutes and fell asleep. Then I woke up and checked my phone and about 20 minutes had passed. Then I fell asleep and woke up. Fell asleep, woke up. Asleep, awake.

9 times.

9 fucking times this happened.

This was some of the most restless sleep I've had in recent memory. The absolute despair that movie awoke in me was staggering. I felt that kind of despair in my childhood and it felt like my parents couldn't understand what I was describing. I was essentially alone with, what felt like, an intense, horrible, metaphysical happening and I think of it daily. It informs my behavior and my thought process regularly.

Thinking of my child having that happen and thinking they can't turn to anyone devastates me.

Purgatory for a toddler. That's the vibe.

Anyway, I was not at all excited for Skinamarink for multiple reasons, but I couldn't stop thinking of it.

I could not fathom sitting through an hour and forty minutes of that. It's unique, for sure, but I could not believe it would be as effective as Heck. More is not always better.

The sound, the grain, the shots of doorframes and walls. It's very difficult for me to picture a scenario where the movie could possibly improve on the short film.

The plot and the voices of two young children in that film, sounded like a recipe for a bad time. "Children in danger" and "children being neglected" are some severe subjects that I truly fucking hate to deal with.

So a week ago, I watched a copy of the film, and I gotta say: I stand by every original feeling I had.

The scenes with children in danger were painful to watch.

The sound quality and voices were garbled the entire time and very difficult to listen to.

The subtitles that he used, while helpful, absolutely suck you out of the experience.

Finally, the runtime is oppressive. An hour-forty is absolutely painful. While I absolutely love horror, when the soreness you get from tensing and gripping the edge of your seat dissipates, you're left wanting.

HOWEVER. The only thing I regret, is not paying for the opportunity to watch it.

The movie is, in my opinion, good. It's just, as I knew going into this film, it's not for me.

Kyle Edward Ball is fucking brilliant. His direction, technique and clear acumen for horror are clear and far greater than most and I'm ecstatic to purchase this movie on home video and never watch it again.

Give it a watch, consider your feelings and engage with the film community to discuss why this film, while not for everyone, is incredibly important.

I'm thankful for Pizza.

Hey, it's thanksgiving so lets give thanks for a variety of things.

It was honestly a pretty good year for me. Especially when it came to gaming.

Pizza Tower came out after years of waiting. I honestly would have released it shortly after the SAGE 19 demo given that the version was so well approved and already had a fanbase and a mod base for it.

But that didn't happen. Mcpig worked on more of the game, adding a bunch of stuff and removing just as many things.

There are plenty of videos about what ended up on the cutting room floor but my favorite thing is the Mansion because it was such an ambitious level that almost always had some kind of lore for its backbone only to get dropped because it was too large or too slow of a level.

Other stuff like having a two player mode with distinctly different characters to play as looked like a nice idea but in reality was just bloat.

In the end it all became mods and with a fully fledged game to cut their teeth on, modders would go absolutely bonkers with what they add and change. From making Pepperman actually functional to bringing back multiple versions of all the dropped levels the game is basically a huge success and has a really devoted mostly sane fanbase.

Emulation is here to stay

The Steam deck is a very successful device and with good reason. It's well made and easy to modify. The Steam Machine didn't work because there was no logical way into the PC market in a way that wasn't redundant.

Handhelds however were a different story. While the Switch and the 3DS dominated for years a secret project was being worked on. Handheld devices that can play multiple games from different franchises. Different developers. It wasn't streaming. It was emulation.

Emulation devices were more than just a knockoff device that Rerez would end up playing where almost all the games were bootlegs of bootlegs.

Real attempts at making real devices that could play real games using the various open source software that was available to them were being worked on.

This took many years. The PSP line actually held the title of being a really high quality emulation device but after the last couple of years true successors have been found.

The Steam deck, even with its massive potential as a device that can play thousands of games sold on the Valve store has the capabilities to easily play several generations of games flawlessly through emulation.

But it's very expensive. Which created a market of people who wanted a Steam Deck but couldn't afford one. So since the release of the release of the Steam Deck the emulation handheld scene exploded with a much sharper level of quality.

Emulation handhelds went from being Meh to Good overnight and with a massive amount of variety, portability, custom firmware, the ability to run Linux, Windows, or Android (depending on the device) and a community that easily maps out what does and doesn't work well on these devices.

Hell, half of these emulation devices already come with thousands of actual, working games on them. I bought a emulation device a couple months ago and it had Cave Story and Shovel Knight as well as several other playable stand alone titles.

There was also the option to mod a 3DS into an emulation device but if you wanted to play non Nintendo releases you were quickly entering scuffed territory (same with the PSPvita when playing Nintendo games).

If you wanted a really well rounded experience, it is more than 200 dollars but an Ayn Odin or upward would get you an impressive range of play ability.

You really are spoiled for choice these days when it comes to games which brings me to my next point.

The game industry is not video-games

I keep getting told that gaming is actually in a bad spot right now. Lots of layoffs, some truly terrible releases, and the ones that do find financial success are complete parasites sucking the blood out of willing whales.

Oh, and what was it? 90% of games being lost?

That last one sounds really bad on paper until you realize that all of human history is like that. Can you even imagine all the stories that were lost to time because the average man couldn't read or write or how certain experimental attempts at music were forgotten because they were before the age of music recording, made by a person whose work was too far ahead of its time?

Hell, a centuries' worth of film is lost because the owner of the property threw it away or it was destroyed in a fire or the original copy naturally degraded over time and there were no other copies of it or even worse, the original was edited meaning that the original master copy was effectively erased.

I get it. We shouldn't have games become unplayable due to bullshit DRM or the game needing a remote server to run or it being tied down to very specifically designed hardware and firmware but to act like gaming is going extinct is hyperbolic.

The reality is that for most people, a life time's worth of video games is already at your fingertips.

It's just a fact, you have way more games than you do time on earth to play them all and any game that becomes lost to the sands of time can probably be recreated as long as you aren't a stickler for copyright.

It's never been easier to play older games and it's never been easier to make a game simply running on the inspiration of a dead or mishandled franchise.

All the stuff about the layoffs and big game studios feeling the squeeze?

THAT'S GOOD.

The reality is that gaming as an art is doing just fine. If you make a really nice game that comes from the heart, even if when it's technically just okay. You can find some kind of success out of making it and people will have fun playing it. No triple A publisher would green light a Visual Novel like Slay the Princess even though Slay the Princess is probably the greatest Renpy visual novel game that has ever been made (which was tough competition seeing as it had to beat Doki Doki and Snoot game) and will have a profit margin which is more than I can say about Gollum.

Aside from whales who vary between being addicts and people with good jobs but no one in their life to dump money into (you can decide for yourself which one is sadder, having a crippling addiction or having nothing in your life other than Genshin Impact), the real thing keeping Triple A gaming afloat was investors.

As someone who is knee deep in the investment field, infinite growth is a real delusion pressed upon by stock holders. If you do the same as last year people want to sell the shares and buy something with moon potential. Sure literally every world renown investor whose word is so valuable stadiums get packed just to hear what they have to say in 0.5 speed (those old men take their time to deliver a speech) will tell you to find something that is stable enough while also offering value in the form of good dividends. From Warren Buffet to the Motley Fool they'll tell you to buy and hold for decades.

But uhh, people want their generational wealth now and if you have enough of those psychos in the boardroom when you decide the direction of your video game company you're going to get into some shit and into some shit a lot of them did.

But now investors are feeling the pinch so it's harder to press your thumb on the CEO when you have to sell off some assets just to make sure you don't end up in a bad spot.

But don't feel too bad for those big suits. They got used to gamblers throwing money at them so when money started drying out they cut talent rather than their paychecks which tells you what they really value in a company (I mean is it a surprise? When you've never worked in the industry you're a Chief Executive Officer in, you don't even think about if something is or isn't replaceable).

So you should be prepared for a crash, a lot of stuff is going to fall over if they don't figure out a restructure that doesn't accounts for priced in growth.

But um, like I said. There are thousands of playable complete, and easily modded games out there for you to play. You don't need to play a new game every year. arguably if you've never played it, heard of it, or know anything about it, that game IS NEW. For you.

So go play it. And if the game you want to play absolutely doesn't exist then ya know what.

my favorite genre of video game is "utter perfection in every regard except one fucking thing that makes you wonder if the dev even knows what a video game is" and RGG just won't stop doing that. love em for it.

Yakuza 4: +Incredible quantity and quality of side content - Tanimura's substories and master are the peak of Yakuza. Especially love the one substory with him that really sneaks up on you - it looks like normal police blotter but then oh shit it's a murder?? Love stuff like that, it really makes the setting feel bigger, wilder and more unpredictable not to mention lived-in. +Solid combat. No character isn't fun to play which is amazing since this is the first game with multiple distinctive fighting styles +Compelling main story +Best Kamurocho. Objectively think the Dragon Engine ones are better but this one has the best vibes. The sound design on the roofs is unparalleled -Story has too many moving parts for its relatively fast pace (0 and 7 both have similarly complex plots but knew to decompress so we had time to get to know everyone), and the fast pace also means there's really not much time to engage with all the side content

Yakuza 5: +Ridiculous breadth of content +Best combat in the series +Only game where the idea of characters having a secondary mode/storyline is explored to its full extent +I'm a huge sucker for the 4/5 era of "Kiryu, Akiyama, Saejima and some dude who never appears again" and Shinada is just absolutely perfect +Haruka's section really worked for me -That being said Akiyama has like nothing to do and his combat sucks -Ridiculous encounter rates -Main story feels like a D&D session where the DM had 1 cocktail napkin worth of notes prepared and forgot the napkin at home.

Yakuza 0: +Engaging and believable setting +Fun side activities including like half of the all time great substories +A plot that really understands how to balance complex conspiracy narratives and satisfying character writing +A bunch of memorable characters throughout both cities and a great feeling of never quite knowing what's around the next corner when guys like Kitajima are inhabiting parts of the map that you'd swear have never even HAD a purpose before +IMO the best implementation of befriending NPCs in any Yakuza game +Yakuza 5-ass encounter rates but also an easy way to get around street fights?? Why did no subsequent games do that. Seriously Yakuza 0's best innovation -Side content is top-heavy, with most substories available by their characters' second chapters. Cities feel dead by the end -Kiryu's side activity is a super lame grindfest -All the villains aside from Kuze are underwritten or just kinda weirdly written especially on Majima's end (though Kiryu's final boss is IMO the worst singular offender) -The combat is too easily cheesed to be engaging

Yakuza 6: +Best new city since Sotenbori, honest to God exploring Onomichi makes this game worth the price of admission on its own +Best iteration of Kamurocho in ages +My favorite cast of side characters in any Kiryu game +Amazing substories and general side content +Evil twink -Horrible combat -The only script in the series that I actively loathe

Yakuza 7: +Favorite cast of characters in the series, period +Almost perfectly paced for the scope of the story, every character had a chance to be fleshed out and even minor villains like Ishioda remain clearly defined in my memory +incredible rags-to-riches story with genius links back to every prior entry +Best new city since Onomichi, I love every inch of Ijincho +Super fun substories, especially fond of 7 choosing single long substories over using a series of short ones to artificually inflate the number of substories +Only substory to ever make me cry (Forget me Not) +Turn-based combat works way better than I thought it would -Yakuza 5 ass encounter rates -Exploration holds your hand too much. Substories all tell you where you're supposed to go and all the major side stuff goes out of its way to tell you it exists. This game doesn't really have any content you can miss, no real reward for being perceptive. It bashes you over the head with where it wants you to go and everything it's possible to do. Overly curated to the point of feeling like a theme park, which is like the opposite vibe it should have given Ichi has never been in this city before? Kamurocho in 4 felt more unfamiliar to me than Ijincho. -There's just not enough for Ichi to do outside of the main story. His two 'side dramas' are a business menugame without much in the way of character interaction and the Survive Bar stuff that shares a cast with the main plot and draws all its storylines from their pre-existing backstories -No unique activities in Sotenbori or Kamurocho. Would it have killed them to make like, one thing unique to these cities? I though golf was only in Sotenbori for a bit but nah. These things eat up so much hard drive space and they only exist for grinding and filling out checklists. Horrible treatment of legacy settings in a game that treats its legacy characters so well.

Like, hell. This (awfully) happened a lot in their old married dating life. Her strong minded personality could match his own. Meanwhile, his 'i will do it my way' attitude is still considered taboo by the girl. Such a bad impression, they once thought about each other, after the two were introduced as student and teacher pairs on the show.

Even since the first time they met —what's the name of the show again? Rising-Dol? Rising Idol? Raging Idol—

Anyways.

“Jeez, are you going to keep quiet like this?” her voice pulled him back to reality.

Kibum shifted on his seat slightly, his eyes pierced sharply toward the girl in front of him. If he was a psycho, he would just cover her mouth with a cloth and then lock her in the basement in a instant.

Kim Kibum hates noisiness sometimes.

Even though he must admit, it wasn't uncommon for him to find himself smiling again whenever he sees this girl.

"Oh you don't want to talk now, huh? Right, just drop me here, Kibum. Thank you for the invitation, the musical was really good," the girl unfastened her seat belt, "…your acting with Dana-sunbae is really good, I'm so amazed, really."

The girl opened Kibum's car door and got out, still swallowing her ego. Kibum found himself stunned again, analyzing the events that were spinning before his eyes. And sure enough, before the girl could walk any further to get out of the basement of his apartment, Kibum stepped on the gas and the car accelerated suddenly. It speed up so fast, until he slammed the brakes. The car stopped abruptly right in front of his girlfriend. The screeching sound of his car's tires rubbing against the basement floor pulled the girl back from her shocked state.

"What the fuck—KIM KIBUM YOU FUCKING PSYCHO— were you really going to kill me—”

“—was about to, just get the fuck in my car.”

That sly smile began to appear on Kim Kibum's face. The man bent down and opened the car door.

"What are you-"

“I said come in, Noona.” came his mocking voice on the last word.

Like magic, she complied. It sucked, okay. It took days for her to build a big wall between herself and Kim Kibum yet, he broke it down in just one second. She was suddenly greeted by Kibum's arms wrapped around his upper body. But there's nothing crazier when the younger man suddenly pressed his cheek right against her chest.

She was about to slap the sassiness away from him when her boyfriend's deep, husky, voice stopped her.

“Twelve kissing scenes— three of them were deep kisses yes— but most of them were just a peck, come on. One bed scene and promise you, nothing nasty in reality. It was just acting, it was fake. Not that I would think about it seriously."

He straightened his back, facing her again. "Now you're acting like a little brat and i don't like it. Not a bit," he moved his face to the side of her neck, as he murmured "...didn't you say I'm always the one who's immature? You're starting to make me think you're jealous...and want us to have the same thing."

The girl was busy hiding the blush that had started to appear on her cheeks. She swore, she didn't think that far.

Then why she didn't want to move an inch from him?

Kibum's lips twitched up. "Or...do you actually want to?”

Not letting anything out from her mouth, he connected his lips to hers. Now, how did she back out?

“I'll take that as a yes,” he chuckled, locking her hands with one of his hands while the other gripped tightly on the back of her neck, "Don't worry, I'll be gentle. It's your first time, anyway."
