Birds of Passage - Log 2
to log 1 ~ Wilderness, day 2 after the escape. We found something interesting among the rubble and debris. I may as well keep it for a while, although I’m not sure yet if it’s valuable or just nicely decorated: A white-haired elf, one of those with a pedigree, as ridiculously handsome as they come; the kind who wouldn’t take a second look at a mongrel like me: half elf and half the scum who called himself my father. Nobles like our new friend (Astarion, he introduced himself), tend to react deliciously surprised when I appear to slit their throats. Under different circumstances, back in Baldur’s Gate, he either would have been one of my clients or – and the role fits him better – my target. Probably one of those who start doing some endearing begging with my blade close to their delicate, lotioned, and perfumed skin. Maybe I would have taken his pleading offer to accept twice the sum to turn against his enemy instead. He truly is handsome. And he has quite a pretty voice, overly dramatic, but pretty. I’m sure he can be convincing if he tries a little more. To my immense delight, our roles were reversed when I met him and had turned around to leave him to whatever issue he was facing with one of the still-alive creatures from the ship. – Not Us anyway, I assumed, and felt the elf’s knife at my throat a moment later. “I was so hoping for a kind soul. Well, not to worry.” He is fast, but not as fast as me. I overwhelmed him in a heartbeat, and he retreated. “What did you and those tentacled freaks do to me?” The memory is strangely vivid, I can almost hear his words. Does the worm in my head make it easier to recall those moments? They are clear and strong when I focus on them, as if they happened seconds ago, right here and now, not half a day ago. “I haven’t done anything to you. Yet.” His angry little smile made me smirk and hope he’d try to attack me again. “You arrogant little …” Then our tadpoles connected. He has been on the ship with us. And like me and Shadowheart, he urgently needs to get rid of the unwelcome guest in his conceited head. It seems there are more people with the issue than I assumed. This ship must have been full of unlucky bastards kidnapped all around Baldur’s Gate by those tentacled abominations. One of them managed to get stuck in a wall. Gale is the name of this doing-good-mage. He’s quite fond of pompous drivel for someone I had to pull out the stonework of some ruin, and he joined our little group. I fear I’ll have to stab him if he starts holding lectures. Searching another part of the shipwreck, before we encountered the wizard, revealed that some of the intellect devourers indeed survived the crash. And even one of the mind fuckers – though badly injured and close to death. I left them to their fate and I guess they already stopped breathing by now. Or maybe not and they have a long last night ahead of them. Note to self: Close to the beach, eastern from the wreckage, we found a door that may lead to some interesting place in the best of cases and some old, empty cave in the worst. I have to try and see if I can open the lock.

One of my all-time favorite songs, yet I can hardly find any others who know of this song or this album... or even this band for that matter. Hopefully my post can help spread the music of Bel Canto to all of you beautiful listeners on here ✨

Remembrance of the Daleks' Counter Measures Team Return in Birds of Prey
Remembrance of the Daleks' Counter Measures Team Return in Birds of Prey
The Counter Measures team from Remembrance of the Daleks in a new novel from Candy Jar Books. Birds of Prey is the second book in a two-novel event, following up book one Birds of Passage, although you don’t need to have read the previous story to enjoy this one. Counter Measures, featuring Group Captain Gilmore, Professor Rachel Jensen, and Dr Allison Williams, was created by Ben Aaronovitch…

I feel weird giving out unprompted permission statements because I'm making a big assumption that anyone's going to want to use my work. That said I also know people do like to build on other people's art and can't always work up the nerve to ask, so: Anyone is free to use this design if they want to for any reason- I don't own this character anyway. (Although I am hopeful that you do not, you know, monetize it, because i cant do that and if you do that its not fair ;_; ) Feel free to remix, improve, use as basic inspiration, etc. I would appreciate a tag/mention if you use it so I can see what you did!
This design has evolved a little since I first started drawing it, and I will see people reblogging the original design notes and think 'oh no! those are out of date and I don't have new/accurate ones!'
Reblogging the old one is still an honor- and the first take on a design just sometimes has a different appeal because it's less refined and more chaotic (especially with a character that should be chaotic), so I suspect some people will just prefer the older drawings & they'll still get shared, which is great! But I felt as if the project was a little bit incomplete without an update, since I think I've reached the point where if you see that old post & then come to my blog and look at my current content, there's a noticeable difference.
Also I kind of like making design notes.
If anyone's wondering why things changed, the answer's really simple- 90% of it is just the result of him settling into having more consistent anatomy and facial structure so that I can keep him looking accurate across different angles and poses. If you look at the old drawings you may notice that Gollum has an inconsistently shaped squishy head. That's fine for a concept post but doesn't work as well for maintaining him across different comic panels or in an animatic, at least not the way I work.
In the same vein, while my art is still & will always be heavily stylized, I started giving him more structured semi-sorta-realistic anatomy so that he wouldn't look entirely out of place next to less bizarre-looking characters such as Aragorn. (I feel that's also helpful in nudging Gollum into the uncanny valley where he ought to be, rather than leaving him so abstractified that there's a risk you won't see anything wrong with him having noodle arms.) He also acquired the new-style 'garbage bag' outfit because I found a reference in LOTR to his arms and legs being bare/exposed (it's in one of my favorite passages, the 'an eagle would think Gollum was dead if it came by right now' passage in The Two Towers):
Not even an eagle poised against the sun would have marked the hobbits sitting there, under the weight of doom, silent, not moving, shrouded in their thin grey cloaks. For a moment he might have paused to consider Gollum, a tiny figure sprawling on the ground: there perhaps lay the famished skeleton of some child of Men, its ragged garment still clinging to it, its long arms and legs almost bone-white and bone-thin: no flesh worth a peck.

Birds of Passage - Log 1
to log 2 ~ The book in your hands feels rough; the brown leather is covered in signs of abrasion from the careless use of its owner. Your fingers trace the insignia on the front cover. It’s stamped with a small bird, a sparrow, or a robin, perhaps. You open the book, and the once valuable parchment is stained and filled with words written in cheap ink and scrawled, messy handwriting. Wilderness, day 1 after the escape With the number of diaries I've stumbled across since I left Baldur’s Gate months ago, it almost seems mandatory to fill one of my own. It’s like a curse will befall those who don’t write down every fever dream and triviality of their sad little lives. Feels ridiculous to start with this nonsense too, but if I believed in signs, I’d probably assume that someone sent this book my way. The cover caught my eye, and I bought it. Maybe writing will help, and if it does, the book will be of use, finally. I need to sort out the mess that’s my mind and something to keep my thoughts … under observation. I don’t have the slightest idea what the thing in my brain is up to or how far its influence goes. Sometimes I notice how it writhes and squirms, followed by the urge to take my dagger and slowly drive it in to cut the little fucker out of there. Let’s call this plan B. I found the ill-humored girl on the beach again. Barely a scratch either. I wonder if I saved her life by getting her out of that pod or if she would have made it just as far without my help. She seems to be tough. And doesn’t like it when I try to touch that little toy of hers. Will have to be quiet if I want to take a look at it while she sleeps. Anyway, the sword I snatched from the body of the dead commander looks better on her than on me. I like my weapons to be wieldy and fast. But I assume she’ll make good use of it. Tomorrow, we’ll continue to search the area for anything of use. And a healer capable of dealing with mindworms. I kind of miss the creepy little fellow that led me through the ship. Saw some of them lying dead among the wreckage. It probably didn’t make it. Pity.

For once I'm actually gonna post about an online vinyl purchase!
Today a very cool, obscure record that I ordered a week ago arrived in the mail: Birds of Passage by a Norwegian dream pop band called Bel Canto. This thankfully has the original track order (unlike the Spotify version that horribly mixes all the tracks up...) as well as a lyric sheet too
I highly recommend listening to this album if you've never heard of it. It has this very ethereal feel to it that, unlike other dream pop albums I've listened to, also contains such an intense energy. Kinda reminds me of late 90's/early 2000's video game music at times in ways I can't fully articulate. It's really great, that's all you need to know ✨

You know what disco elysium place I want to know more about? Ubi Sunt?, the only geographical location in elysium with a punctuation mark in it's name. Fond of socialism and sheep. Facing crushing poverty and total entroponetic collapse. It is literally being eaten by the pale. Named after a latin phrase from the vulgate bible commonly used to mean nostalgia, translating to "Where are those that came before us?"
