Liveblog 10: Episode 6, part II AKA me & Kerubim Crepin gender studies??

I really do think that Kerubim is at his freest when he isn't performing being a macho-man.

He's generally calmer and happier as an old man, with pretty feminine hobbies and mannerisms. He was happier when he pretended to be a woman for Lou. He's awesome in these dancing shoes!

But his anxiety about being liked won't let him loosen up and live how he actually wants to live.

Rethinking the way he presents himself to the world could have fixed things with Lou a little, or at least made his life easier, but he really does need people to like him, and being a really masculine, courageous womanizing hero does wonders for that.

(Not to say he doesn't like being a womanizer, but a big part of his enjoyment is about the image it provides.)

(By the way, an interesting factoid: The guise of Lili The Hairdresser is the first time Kerubim starts wearing green, which seems to be his favorite color to this day.

But we'll talk more about how important that episode to Kerubim's character when we get there.)

I think that the main reason for his insecurities is a mix of being an orphan, Ecaflip's constant belittling of him, as well as being Atcham's brother and therefore knowing what not being cool, attractive, and liked does to people.

It is his worst nightmare, after all.

A part of why he almost loses this match is that he is fighting the ballet shoes, — due to being terrified of losing. He lets himself get worked up over Indie's remarks.

The prospect of losing Lou always made him come out of his shell and be brave. From going full-ballet mode, to crossdressing. It's one of the ways their relationship was productive, and, dare I say, almost healthy.

To him, not fighting against the shoes also pointedly includes being feminine on purpose as a joke, which, as we've seen, is a crossing between something he's scared of (doing things perceived as lame/girly/cringe/weak) and something he uses as a shield (being a clown).

It's probably a step in the right direction for him, to someday beat The Cringe Inside him and become free.

Also allows him to stop giving a shit about whatever Indie thinks. Good for him, good for him.

I would joke about becoming a polycule fixing things, or them needing to explore each other's bodies, but I think it would actually make things even worse between everyone involved.

...Truly, he is a humble and gentle soul.

I think that, chronologically and logically speaking, this is when Lou first started taking him seriously, as well as his first ever kiss.

No wonder he's so nostalgic about it.

Anyway, I guess considering how bad Simone is at this, he really wasn't lying to Lou when he said he was good at dancing.

- alaynabella hollywood/magi ruiz. i call it moviemagic bc i am a loser who likes puns too much. idk they’re so. they are so girls who necromance together (struggle to) stay together. trips and spills my pile of wips where magi ruiz does something really unethical or dangerous to make people proud of her. i have a whole moviemagic tag for them

- alaynabella hollywood/goodwin morin. what if we were the best batter and the worst pitcher and we didn’t understand each other for most of a season, until suddenly we did. what if we got together right before the game pulled us apart and we tried for so long to make it work. and it did, until it didn’t.

- york silk/oliver loofah/magi ruiz. absolute fucking disaster polycule. york shells olive and takes away one of the only people magi has really connected to. she gets pecked out and they reconnect even though liv has to travel up from charleston. york comes to seattle and olive skips town for a few weeks to get away from him (she can’t stop remembering that MaX is still in the shell xe echoed.) magi is mad that york has fucked up her friendcrush AGAIN. magi “world’s most hypocritical necromancer” ruiz says why didn’t you stay dead. york “necromanced former child star” silk says is what what you said to chorby (chorby who just died for a third time). they fight fight kiss kiss. simultaneously york and olive have very similar weird complexes about growing up. also york is aware his time is running out and he wants to make some sort of amends. they also fight fight kiss kiss. the three of them together are like. york needs people who don’t just constantly praise him like he’s still that can-do-no-wrong kid in hawai’i. magi needs people who can be her shoulder angel and devil (they trade who’s who often). olive needs people who understand the pressure of being new to adulthood and trying to shake off people’s expectations. wow this one got long ANYWAY they’re so fucked up

- york silk/ruffian applesauce. this is a dumbass teenage romance sparking from a game where they both hit a bunch of home runs. it ends abruptly when ruffian fucking dies. it awkwardly continues when york also dies. it ends abruptly AGAIN when york un-dies and ruffian just sits in the hall forever. if romeo and juliet were also orpheus and eurydice. you know?

- SO many short circuits garages ships.

Hooooooooooooooooooly shit okay let’s get into it

Layna and Magi - well known and loved. Absolute fucking disasters. Absolutely end game. It’s movie magic, baby! It all works out in the end! (aka, it Never fucking works out because there is no end)

Goodwin and Layna - OHOHOHOHOHO. I like the interp where ego affects everyone with it differently but by stage 4 you’re pretty much a walking stereotype, with Goodwin becoming more and more of a shell of herself (“isn’t this what everyone wanted? Isn’t this the dream? Don’t you love me? I’m a star player!!!!!!!!” vibes) and losing her personality to the ego. Layna “I love you and I forgive you but I will never forget” Hollywood, who values family and trust over literally everything (see: movie magic) would not take kindly to this, but also she knows that this is not Goodwin, but also can’t she fight back, but also she’s doing the best she can, but also Layna Hollywood Never Forgets. And it’s too late by the time Layna decides to forgive and Goodwin is gone, because fuck you Layna you get nothing

York and Olive and Magi - Brendan Urie sucks but when he said “make up sex! break up sex!” he was talking about these three. It’s all revenge! It’s all passion! It’s all dangerous! It’s all wrong! York just wants to be human again and regain the life he built from the ground up in Halifax, Liv just wants her family to be okay, and Magi just wants her crushes to stop being given the finger. None of their intentions are pure but god are all of them cute as hell and in this world where you don’t know when the end is might as well kiss the pretty ones.

At this point I think Magi Ruiz has had a crush on every girl on the active roster (and some of the shadows) (and York Silk when he was experimenting with gender presentation). Also The Fall by Lovejoy is a Magi song, specifically a MovieMagic song.

Ruffian and York - what if in a very long and intense game you got obsessed over someone you used to know in a kind of fucked up way and he just wants a nap, oh my god but you saw the passion in his eyes as he threw that last pitch you absolutely slammed with your own passion and your teammates are looking at you funny again arent they. thoughts about disney movies from watching many many "princess videos" with my 4 year old daughter (i.e. my brain has been boiled)

- mulan is obviously the best one

- moana a close second

- pretty much all of them are canon teenagers which is a little :/ considering the way they're whisked off into marriages

- each movie is reflective of the popular broadway shows of the time (more on that later maybe)

- a surprising amount of minstrel show references (in particular the genie from aladdin)

- i knew that disney villains were queer-coded but a lot of them are jewish coded too :/

- each movie has something in it that is so unbearably terrifying as a concept that my child refuses to watch any of the full movies until she's older (parents dying, supernatural evil forces, fights, etc)

- olaf the snowman is prob the worst character design

- frozen has blatant marketing towards the "conservative america" demographics who might have been turned off by previous diverse / multicultural movies like princess and the frog & mulan. it's sprinkled throughout...

- the sleeping beauty fairies are basically her lesbian mom polycule.

- one of the sleeping beauty fairies says "d'oh!" A FEW TIMES just like homer simpson it's hilarious

- princess and the frog has a lot of good stuff in it but it's so uneven (and the scary parts are really scary, supernatural evil / unnecessary body horror?!). it takes a really wide tiptoe around racism with the whole blonde best friend character and the "different worlds" they live in. and i wish they could have let tiana get more magic and joy in her story instead of making her personality traits that she's a hard worker, works too hard, loves to work, is tired from working, etc

- baby tiana is so cute 🥺

- lilo and stitch -- that one is good too. unfortunately still too "scary" for my kid to watch

- mulan II has some surprisingly catchy songs...

- the live action adaptations are sooo unnecessary. literally just prolonging the IP & getting more $ for disney. they remove every ounce of imagination from the original movies...

- every single princess is a misunderstood loner who does not fit into Normal Society

- where are the disney peasant movies?! every poor heroine is "redeemed" from rags to riches (EXCEPT FOR THE MVP LILO AND STITCH!)

- gotta say... there are some really catchy songs... and some really funny expressions they drew on some of these animal friends... gotta admit that a lot of these have been carved into my brain and i can recite many songs from memory...

Do you read fanfic? Do you have any recommendations?

My fanfic habit straddles the line between “excessive” and “obsessive,” and at this point I’d wager that I spend more time reading fanfic than engaging the source material. My tastes tend to favor long fics and those with f/f content, but that’s not a strict requirement. Favorites by tag/fandom below the cut, in rough order of how much other content in that category I can recommend:

Dragon Age: “Modern Girl in Thedas”

As you might guess from the name, this tag is all about women from our reality finding themselves somehow in the Dragon Age setting. As a rule of thumb, you can 1) expect Inquisition spoilers really early on in most of them, and 2) expect that it’ll be OC/Solas or OC/Cullen, since people are weirdly obsessed with smooching those two. Some favorites include:

Diary of a Dislocated Knife-ear: A woman wakes up in Thedas during Inquisition, does her best to go unnoticed, and ends up starting an aggressive civil rights campaign. 

Virtually Faded: A pair of close friends find themselves wrapped up in the center of Inquisition’s events as the Herald and Inquisitor. 

Best Laid Plans of Mice and Morons: A woman wakes up in Ostagar, finds out she’s a blood mage, and tries to use her metaknowledge to avoid the worst of the events of Origins. 

Dragon Age x ??? Crossovers

Crossovers tend to be very hit-or-miss with me. Most of my favorites in this category operate on a similar premise to the MGiT ones above, where a character from some other setting is transported to Thedas and has to adapt. Favorites include: 

The Half-Life of Element Zero: A member of the Andromeda Initiative (Mass Effect: Andromeda) wakes up in Haven with the Mark on her hand. One of my absolute favorites for how it blends Bioware’s signature settings. 

Dragon Heart: A redeemed Revan (Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic) returns to Thedas to right her past wrongs. 

Smith From Another Land:The orc Dragonborn (Skyrim) comes to Thedas, and must work with the Inquisition if she wants to have any chance of returning home.

Knights of the Old Republic (and KotOR II)

There’s a ton of great, gay one-chapter fics (particularly f!Revan/Bastilla and f!Exile/Atris) in Ao3, so if you have any interest, I highly recommend searching for them! Aside from those, my favorites are:

Breaking the Silence: The Exile crosses paths with an unaware Revan, and brings up their mutual history. 

Echoes: A KotOR novelization with just enough changes to make it a new, but still familiar, experience. 

As Atton Will Ever Be: A “Modern Girl in KotOR” fic that follows the events of KotOR II, as the poor woman tries to avert as much disaster as possible. 

Overwatch

There’s a ton of great sapphic content here. Most of my favorites tend to be ???/Widowmaker, and I have a special soft spot for the Widow/Tracer/Emily polycule. My top recommendations include: 

Looking into the Abyss: A realistic look at what Talon!Mercy might look like, with Widow/Mercy/Tracer as the main relationship. 

In My Blood: A reversal of Tracer and Widowmaker’s positions, with Widow as an Overwatch agent and Tracer as a brainwashed Talon assassin. 

the right kind (of bad love): An OC/Moira fic that’s just about the two of them being absolute disaster lesbians. 

World of Warcraft

I started with a cute Jaina/Sylvanas fanfic I saw in my tumblr feed, and am now reinstalling the game after years of avoiding it. I have no shame. Favorites include:

Two Rooms: A Jaina/Sylvanas political marriage to encourage peace between Alliance and Horde, set sometime around the beginning of Battle for Azeroth.

Increments of Longing: Also Jaina/Sylvanas political marriage, but this time ignoring all that crap where Arthas ruined their lives and instead imagining an AU where Kul Tiras and Quel’Thalas want closer ties.

Falling series: A Jaina/Sylvanas fic that, aside from the two’s relationship, fairly closely follows cannon. The first 5 chapters are sweet and endearing, and the last 2 chapters will rip your heart out and stomp on it for good measure. I cried.

Neverwinter Nights (And NWN2)

A bit more niche than the others, but I love these games to death so I can’t rightfully omit them. 

Windwalker series: A “Modern Girl in Faerun” series that span both the Shadows of Undrentide and Hordes of the Underdark campaigns for NWN1. 

All It Takes: A novelization of the Mask of the Betrayer campaign for NWN2, one of my favorite all-time RPG storylines.

So here's what's going on with these four+ Clover in my headcanon (right now. These might change as my opinions change)

Nickel is on good terms with BB and Suitcase but it's kinda awkward atm. He also might be a bit upset about Clover being in his Polycule but he's doesn't want to mess things up AGAIN. (Though they will have a remarriage arc. Just...not yet)

Yes I know my Balloon design has a thing from BB, but I've realized I don't think they are or ever were together? Like even in canon they don't really have much of a relationship. So I'll remove it at some point.
