I grow my own so that I can make my own. Single source for the win. Flashback to this Super Lekker from 3 years ago which has been a subject of my dreams since I first grew and then washed it. Seeds from @marimberos grew with great determination in my rooftop garden under the bright Oakland sun. Harvested right on time, she was dried and cured and washed with loving care...and then the resin revealed all my time and effort. As I am preparing to begin washing again with great intensity, I am looking forward to those extra special personal hash projects that I take from seed to 6 star awesome. All parts of the cycle bring me untold joy. Though I grew my first plant 18 years ago, it wasn't until I started to make hash 6 and a half years ago that I really began to understand resin. I have so much to learn. My educational journey never ends and testing my own ideas in my grow is invaluable. I grow my own for research...and resin. Resin is resin is resin...and dry sift is simply another method of procuring it. Back in 2015, @cubanhashqueen gave me a quick run down of how to make #drysift. She suggested the @poconoscreensupply and I bought almost every screen 😪. I didn't really do much with the knowledge until 2017 while contracting out of @advesawellness. We had a couple hundred grams of trim kief that needed to be cleaned. I took what I remembered and went to work. Since then, however, I haven't done it once. Just now, I felt compelled to have a go at it. Oh yes....I like this repetitive action. I like seeing the color get better and better. Now to sift enough to make a ball. 😁 I figure if I wasn't working in a 70+ degree room, I could get it cleaner (without green bits - swipe left). Whether hand washed or processed using a machine, resin presents its best when grown well and handled with care. The finest product can be discerned from fresh frozen or cured material. From buds or trim. In this case the resin was lovingly collected from trim that was kept in the freezer after being snipped. There is no *1* (singular) approach to achieve high quality results. This ball of hash pressed into a near flawless sphere in less than 10 minutes. Why? The well dried resin was practically devoid of any contaminants (swipe left). Without particulate to interfere and with ample oil content, the resin melted readily. Cresting a ball with no cracks nor creases was a breeze. I am always learning, but I am quite happy with my machine wash game. However, I could really only muster tentative steps in the hand washing department. A shoulder injury from 1998 kept me leary of any repetitive actions that may inflame my inconsistent, yet persistent bursitis. On my last trip to Barcelona I was presented the opportunity to wash by hand early in the morni g, I quickly dismissed the idea of sleeping in; even though my nightly club/association forays already had me exhausted by day 4. It was a joy to participate in the group wash of the dank material from @mm_extracts. My movements were jerky, unsure, and certainly unsmooth. However, without embarrassment or reservation, I was happily adding to #theduchtouch because I am #alwayslearning. Two days later, we had the super nice chillum sesh at @highclassbcn. Resin makes me ravenous. Pressed hash makes me insane. As I prepare for my class in a week. I marvel at the ways I can happily be enticed. Granular freeze dried hash looks so pristine and untouched; it's color and fluffy texture maintained by the temperature restrictions of the freeze dryer. Air dried hash always looks so oily, like precious caviar. Pressed hash reminds me of love massaged and caressed into form. How delightful is the concept of balls of resin coalescing onto one mass of magic. We all like something different, and comparisons will always be stilted. I thought it appropriate to bring back this 1 minute clip about why all white hash is not inherently good hash. Don't be fooled by color. Here we have 3 lightly hued collections of resin. Using the cold start technique, each banger will be heated to demonstrate that light color has no bearing on meltability. Notice that the resin in the top left banger initially seems to soften, but it never actually melts and eventually it will char. The resin in the top right banger gets going swiftly with large bubbles, but moves down the banger rather slowly and begins to turn to darken though not char even though the resin in the bottom left banger has been slightly overheated, it effortlessly slides down the sides with furious bubbly action and pool to liquid. Light colored hash is neither inherently dank nor full melt. So don't go buy any old white hash and get caught with the okey doke. It took 31 hrs to get from Barcelona to San Francisco. During the drawn out trip, my skin was at once clammy and disturbingly dehydrated as I felt clad in a thin layer of dirt and disappointment. After a long shower, a good night's sleep, a conscious shift in perspective, and some dank hash and flower, I felt like myself again. #sofreshsoclean Much has been changed in just a few days. #fbf Reminiscing on how I used to serenade my ladies on the roof. Forty one different personalities (anthropromorphize much?), including mine, on that roof. Growers know that all the plants don't act the same...Every plant resonated differently. When I played for them, I was swept along the river of happiness and being that transcended time. I was often MAAAD late to stuff because I had been chilling in my garden for more hours than expected. I was not going to the gym, but my muscles got a killer workout getting a full 5 gallon bucket (sometimes 2 at a time because I am extreme) up twelve stairs to get to the roof. Actually, I screwed up my right arm and it's not been quite the same, but I digress. I got kicked of my roof in 2017 and unfortunately, I allowed that fact to steal a chunk of my joy for a few years. #fbf - Teaching Hashmaking at Mission Nurseries last year - One of the best aspects of being a consultant is the access to great material from growers from all over the world. While every grower's approach is different, I have found that across the board, each phenomenal grower adheres to the same high level of quality to ensure the best possible product. For making fire concentrates, those standards still apply in order to get the most value at a time where every bit of material counts. For many, fresh frozen buds do not provide good return on investment (ROI) as the yields are relatively terrible and the price point for sale can only go so high. Trim need not be half ass and second rate. Well handled sugar trim from the right cultivars will still give you 5, and in some cases, 5.5 stars of dank meltiness. Small buds that have been meticulously prepared are my favorite material to wash. However I will never look down on great trim. While teaching the finer points of hashmaking at @missionnurseries this week, I was again reminded that the most pristine resin will result from incredible growing, impeccable harvest, proper storage, gentle washing, and complete drying. Dank Dictionary : A is for abscission [point] The point at which the trichome head break from the trichome stalk. While that point isnt 100% porous, it is not impermeable. When you pluck an orange or a lemon, that part which is softer is a vulnerability (when related to trichomes). Keep cold and move fast.
