Terrence opened his eyes to see a deep gray, almost black sky.
Rain was falling heavily, and lightning flashed.
A crack of thunder seconds later made him jump.
He gasped as the movement made pain shoot through his leg.
He looked down, then closed his eyes tightly.
Again? he thought in dismay. They’re gonna be pissed…
Terrence took a deep but shaky breath.
No…no…that’s not important. It happened. Just focus on now.
Terrence looked around, a sense of unease growing.
Where…where’s Victoria…and Calvin?
He stared at the ground, but the only blood he saw was seeping through his pant leg.
That’s bad…but…maybe they…
A flicker of red light caught his attention.
There were neatly arranged road flares leading away from him.
They must’ve left those…that means they’re probably alright.
Terrence’s head began buzzing, and he closed his eyes.
“Wake up.”
Victoria?
“Come on, now. Come on. Wake up.”
She was shaking his shoulder.
Terrence opened his eyes to see Victoria crouched beside him.
It wasn’t raining anymore, but the comforting scent of rain was still in the air.
“Vic?” Terrence mumbled. “Where’d you go?”
“I never left,” she said. “Stay awake for me, alright? Calvin’s getting help.”
Victoria took off her jacket and draped it over Terrence.
“This’ll hurt,” she said, reaching for his leg.
Terrence winced, but nodded.
Victoria sat cross-legged and lifted Terrence’s injured leg onto her lap, propping it up.
He couldn’t help but scream in agony.
“Sorry,” Victoria muttered.
“What…happened?” Terrence asked faintly after he’d collected himself.
“Rockslide happened while we were scouting the canyon,” Victoria said. “You busted your leg pretty badly.”
“Damn,” Terrence muttered weakly. “Sorry.”
Victoria shrugged.
“It happens,” Victoria said with a tense smile. “But you’re still my cat babysitter, so it’s all good.”
Terrence smiled weakly.
“I used to have a cat,” Terrence mumbled. “Forgot ’til last year…can’t remember what she looked like, though…”
He closed his eyes.
Victoria shook his shoulder again.
“What was her name?” she prompted.
“…maybe…I think she was…Little Cat?”
“Why that?”
“We had two cats…one big…one little.”
Victoria laughed softly.
“What was the other cat’s name?” she asked.
“Ginger,” Terrence said with a smile. “Fluffy orange tabby.”
“Who broke the naming trend there?”
“Heh. I named Little Cat. Someone else named Ginger…maybe a sibling…can’t remember now.”
“You have siblings?”
“At least one…I think.”
There was silence, but then the rain started up again.
“…you pushed me out of the way.”
Terrence stared at Victoria.
“I did?” he asked in confusion. “I…I don’t remember…”
“We’re coming!” Calvin shouted urgently.
He raced towards them with a couple medics behind him.
Soon enough the medics had Terrence’s leg splinted and re-bandaged.
Terrence closed his eyes tightly and braced himself as they lifted him onto a backboard.
“Hang in there,” Calvin said.
Terrence gave a weary mumble in response as he drifted off.

“Gray,” Terrence said.
Victoria looked up from the morning newspaper and gave him a questioning glance.
“My cat,” Terrence clarified, leaning back on the couch and closing his eyes as he thought back. “She was gray.”
“Ah,” Victoria said. “Took you a while to remember.”
“Just a week,” Terrence said in mock defensiveness while petting Rowan.
The brown cat gave a sleepy murmur and rolled over in his lap.
“Taking care of Rowan reminded me,” Terrence sighed wistfully.
“It’s still weird to think of you having a cat,” Victoria remarked. “But not bad, I guess.”
“Well, I was just a kid,” Terrence said. “I wasn’t evil yet. Though…don’t evil leaders in movies always have a cat?”
“A lot of them, yeah,” Victoria agreed. “Which is funny, because cats aren’t evil.”
“Sure aren’t,” Terrence said with a smile as Rowan began to purr.
