Siguiendo en la línea inaugurada con "Put Your Dreams Away", hoy os comparto un tema, que también, he incluído en mi Ep, "Piano Solo: Standars": "It's a Sin to Tell a Lie". Fue escrita en 1936 por Billy Mayhew. La primera vez que escuché este tema fue en la versión de The Ink Spots. Inmediatamente quedé enamorado de la canción: era como de otro mundo. Cuando la escuché por Elvis Presley en su álbum "A Private Recordings", quedé nuevamente fascinado y además, la interpretaba sobre un "playback" que Nelson Riddle había grabado, entre otras muchas canciones, para un álbum destinado a que la gente cantara encima: "Sing Along with Riddle". Dick Robertson sería el primero en registrarla por primera vez en 1936 para el sello Champion. Fats Waller no tardaría en hacerlo para Victor con una versión marca de la casa. Sublime la versión, solo al piano, que hace Dave Brubeck en su álbum, "Private Brubeck Remembers". En fin, no he podido dejar de tocarla en directo a lo largo de los años. Decidí hacer una versión al piano, más nocturnal e intimista. Espero que os guste. "To Each His Own" is a popular song with music written by Jay Livingston and lyrics by Ray Evans. It is the title song of the movie of the same name and was published in 1946 by Paramount Music. They were assigned to write this song after film composer Victor Young turned it down.

“It was one of my ex-girlfriends that first got me into The Ink Spots, about 20 years ago. She had this Best Of album on vinyl but took it with her when she left (most inconsiderate) so I was delighted to find it in a Record Fair a couple of years ago for the fine price of €1. I would happily have paid more, it’s a great introduction to most of their best known work. . I think she may have got into The Ink Spots from their ghostly appearance in one of her favourite films, Blade Runner. Or it’s appearance in the original trailer, it was then replaced in the film with Vangelis’ own version of 1940s Doo-Wop. In fact there’s something about The Ink Spot’s music, the close harmonies, the melancholic air, the simplicity and similarity of the compositions which imbues nostalgia and longing for a lost time and lost worlds. Their music is a popular choice in artistic portrayals of dystopian future worlds. Whether this is purely to do with the music, or the period it invokes, I’m not certain. The late 30s to mid-40s was war time, a time of rationing and of being under siege, surviving against the odds. . The track used in the Blade Runner trailer, but later replaced, was If I Didn’t Care, the first track on this Best Of. It’s not only their biggest hit, but it remains to this day the 9th best-selling single of all time, racking up over 19 million copies. According to Wikipedia it is also “the first studio recorded example of the Ink Spots “Top & Bottom” format with Bill Kenny singing lead and Hoppy Jones performing the “talking bass”.” . Other highlights are Whispering Grass; Java Jive; Duke Ellington’s classic Don’t Get Around Much Anymore, and my personal favourite I Don’t Want To Set the World On Fire. One day I will set this piece of music to my own dystopian vision of the future. That’s if the future doesn’t catch up with us all first.” .
