Getting the Most Out of Combined Heat and Power: R&D Project Uses Thermal Energy Storage to Improve Efficiency
We’re partnering with Brenmiller Energy, an Israeli developer and manufacturer of thermal energy storage systems, on a joint R&D project to develop and demonstrate a thermal energy storage-based combined heat and power (CHP) system as a means to increase energy efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

CHP systems achieve both fuel savings and greenhouse gas reductions by recovering thermal energy that is typically wasted during electricity generation. Instead of dissipating the energy through exhaust systems, it is repurposed for other applications, such as space heating.
Typically, the heat recovered by a CHP system must be used immediately. This means that the most efficient CHP systems are those where there is a continuous thermal demand that coincides with electricity demand. However, many facilities do not operate in this manner, and the benefits gained from CHP may be lost if the heat goes underutilized.
NYPA and Brenmiller Energy’s groundbreaking project will investigate thermal energy storage as a means to solve the issue of non-coincident thermal and electricity demand. The project’s goal is to pair Brenmiller’s storage unit with a CHP system on the campus of SUNY Purchase in Westchester County. When complete, the system will consist of a thermal storage unit-based CHP designed to meet peak thermal demands that exist during the winter season. This innovative demo system will supply electricity and heat to the campus’ physical education building and serve as a reference for future installations across the U.S.

The storage-based CHP system will be an exemplar of our partnering with customers and other key stakeholders on innovative technology solutions, energy savings and reduced GHG emissions. Preliminary estimates indicate that the CHP and thermal storage system will provide an annual greenhouse gas reduction of 550 metric tons of CO2-equivalent emissions and an annual energy savings of 10,000 million British thermal units, saving SUNY Purchase nearly $70,000 per year. The system is scheduled to come online by the end of 2019.
The project is supported by a $1 million grant from the Israel-U.S. Binational Industrial Research and Development (BIRD) Foundation Energy Program, which matches U.S. and Israeli companies and researchers and offers funding for promising projects that have commercialization potential, ability to lead to energy savings and a significant impact on the environment. The BIRD foundation is funded by the U.S. Department of Energy, Israel Ministry of Energy and the Israel Innovation Authority.
The global collaboration at SUNY Purchase exemplifies NYPA’s steadfast commitment to advancing its Vision 2020 strategic initiative of developing innovative customer solutions.
